In ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients, mean platelet volume (MPV) is associated with infarct related artery patency both before and after reperfusion. In anterior STEMI patients successfully treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), the relationship between left ventricular (LV) function and MPV on admission is unknown.97 anterior STEMI patients successfully revascularizated with PCI between January 2010 and February 2011 are included. MPV on admission is recorded. All patients underwent transthoracic echocardiography within 3 days or before discharge. Patients were divided into two groups according to left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), as systolic dysfunction (LVEF50%, 1st group) and normal systolic functions (LVEF50%, 2nd group). The 1st group included 61 (47 males) patients and the 2nd group included 36 (35 males) patients.MPV was; 9.5+/-1.1 femtoliter (fL) in the 1st and 8.8+/-0.8 fL in the second group. The difference between the groups was significant (p = 0.001). There was a significant difference in the Troponin I levels and white blood cell (WBC) counts on admission between two groups (30+/-29 vs 12.2+/-15.1 ng/mL, p = 0.001 and 12.3+/-3.8 vs 10.6+/-3.4 counts ×109/L, p = 0.027, respectively).In anterior STEMI patients treated with percutaneous coronary intervention, increased MPV on admission is associated with impairment in left ventricular systolic function.

The genus Phlomis L. belongs to the Lamiaceae family and encompasses 100 species native to Turkey, North Africa, Europe and Asia. It is a popular herbal tea enjoyed for its taste and aroma. Phlomis species are used to treat various conditions such as diabetes, gastric ulcer, hemorrhoids, inflammation and wounds. In this study, ethanol and water extracts were prepared from powdered P. pungens flowers and leaves. Antioxidant activities were measured by 2,2-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS • +) radical scavenging, 1,1- diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl free radical (DPPH •) scavenging, superoxide anion (O2 •) radical scavenging, reducing activity and ferrous metal chelating activity assays. In conclusion, P. pungens flowers and leaves had effective ABTS • + and DPPH • radical scavenging, superoxide anion radical scavenging, reducing power and metal chelating activities when compared with BHA, BHT and a-tocopherol as reference antioxidants.

In reactie op de ontwikkelingen in de samenleving en op de arbeidsmarkt voeren publieke organisaties vaak diversiteitsbeleid. Er is weinig bekend over de effectiviteit van diversiteitmanagement en de concrete beleidsinstrumenten die in dat kader worden ingezet. In dit artikel is de invloed van diversiteitmanagement en enkele beleidsinstrumenten op de binding van werknemers in de Nederlandse publieke sector onderzocht en wordt nagegaan wat daarbij de rol is van leiderschap. De beleidsinstrumenten zijn onderverdeeld volgens de typologie van Ely en Thomas (2001): Discrimination & Fairness (D&F), Access & Legitimacy (A&L) en Integration & Learning (I&L).

This laid the foundation of ethnobotany in senso lato and phytotherapy in senso stricto. Achillea millefolim L. is a member of the Asteraceae family that is commonly referred to as 'yarrow' and has been used in folk medicine against several disturbances including skin inflammations, spasmodic and gastrointestinal disorders, as well as hepato-biliary complaints. Ethanol and water extracts were prepared from powdered A. millefoliun flowers, leaves and seeds. In this study, antioxidant properties were studied by 2,2-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS(center dot+)) radical scavenging, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl free radical (DPPH(center dot)) scavenging, superoxide anion (O(2)(center dot-)) radical scavenging, reducing activity and ferrous metal chelating activity assays. In conclusion, A. millefolium flowers, leaves and seeds had effective ABTS(center dot+) and DPPH(center dot) radical scavenging, superoxide anion radical scavenging, reducing power and metal chelating activities. Additionally, these various antioxidant activities were compared with BHA, BHT and alpha-tocopherol as reference antioxidants.

Objective Regular physical activity is associated with decreased morbidity and mortality. Traditionally, patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) have been advised to limit physical exercise. We studied the prevalence of physical activity and associations with demographic and disease-related variables in patients with RA from 21 countries. Methods The Questionnaires in Standard Monitoring of Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (QUEST-RA) is a cross-sectional study that includes a self-report questionnaire and clinical assessment of nonselected consecutive outpatients with RA who are receiving usual clinical care. Frequency of physical exercise (≥30 minutes with at least some shortness of breath, sweating) is queried with 4 response options: ≥3 times weekly, 1–2 times weekly, 1–2 times monthly, and no exercise. Results Between January 2005 and April 2007, a total of 5,235 patients from 58 sites in 21 countries were enrolled in QUEST-RA: 79% were women, >90% were white, mean age was 57 years, and mean disease duration was 11.6 years. Only 13.8% of all patients reported physical exercise ≥3 times weekly. The majority of the patients were physically inactive with no regular weekly exercise: >80% in 7 countries, 60–80% in 12 countries, and 45% and 29% in 2 countries, respectively. Physical inactivity was associated with female sex, older age, lower education, obesity, comorbidity, low functional capacity, and higher levels of disease activity, pain, and fatigue. Conclusion In many countries, a low proportion of patients with RA exercise. These data may alert rheumatologists to motivate their patients to increase physical activity levels.

This paper investigates the price discovery function in Turkish index markets. More specifically it examines the price discovery in ISE-30 index markets after the introduction and trading of IST30 Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) on April 7 2009. ISE-30 index is an index consisting of large capitalization firms and IST30 ETF is a derivative security designed to track the performance of that index. Also IST30 is a financial instrument trading like shares of a stock on the Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE). Our findings support that the ISE-30 index markets are not weak form efficient and there is arbitrage opportunity for investors. Moreover results confirm the leader role of futures markets in price discovery process in Turkey.©EuroJournals Publishing, Inc. 2010.

The vertical force density curves of (Sm123)(1-x)(Yb211)(x) high temperature superconductor (HTS) samples prepared by a melt-powder-melt-growth technique were measured during vertical and lateral traverses in zero field cooling (ZFC) regime for various doping levels (x). It was determined that the maximum vertical force density of the samples increases when the doping level increases and after certain level of the doping the force saturates. The pinning properties, which create attractive force, were enhanced up to a certain Yb211 doping level by introducing locally suppressed superconducting regions. These results indicate that the optimization fabrication conditions and Yb211 doping level should be further investigated for larger dimensional samples to enhance technological applicability. The frozen image model was used to predict the experimentally measured levitation force between a permanent magnet (PM) and the superconductor samples. Various configurations of the PM/HTS force interaction were tested according to the magnet and superconductor size. The doped HTS samples do not show very strong; diamagnetic behavior as the frozen image model predicts. The levitation force behavior regarding the dimensions of the PM and HTS indicates an illustration how the diamagnetic behavior of the superconductor transforms into the flux pinning. In this study, the effects of soils on poor yield and condition of pastures in Southern Marmara, Turkey were determined. For this reason, total of 60 soil samples, in Spring 2006, were collected from 5 types of pastures in Canakkale, Balikesir and Bursa provinces, all located in the Southern Marmara region. Pasture types investigated were mountain, shrubland, coastal, lowland and forest gap type pastures. All of the collected soil samples were being evaluated for soil electrical conductivity (EC), pH, CaCO3, P, K, Ca, Mg, Na, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu and organic matter. The EC (P = 0.000), CaCO3 (P = 0.009), organic matter (P = 0.000), P (P = 0.003), K (P = 0.027), Fe (P = 0.025) and Cu (P = 0.047) levels of soils were significantly different between pastures. Highest levels of EC (1.67 ± 0.82 dS m-1) and of CaCO3 (5.81 ± 1.02 %), were found in the soil samples obtained from coastal region and shrubland type pastures, respectively. However, the highest levels of both organic matter (4.94 ± 0.50 %) and P (49.0 ± 3.4 ppm) were found in both forest gap and lowland type pastures. Cu level was the highest in coastal type pastures among all 5 types of pastures analyzed. Among the provincial pastures, pH (P = 0.009), organic matter (P = 0.007), P (P = 0.002), Ca (P = 0.019), Mg (P = 0.020), Fe (P = 0.000), Zn (P = 0.013) and Cu (P = 0.003) levels of soils were significant. The highest levels of pH (7.40 ± 0.11), of CaCO3 (4.87 ± 0.61 %), of Ca (3049 ± 275 ppm) and of Mg (656.7 ± 60.9 ppm) level were found in pastures of Canakkale province while the highest levels of organic matter (%4.01 ± 0.40), of Fe (22.8 ± 3.0 ppm), of Zn (1.21 ± 0.10) and of Cu (0.92 ± 0.08 ppm) were found in pastures of Bursa province. Overall results of this study indicated that pastures of Southern Marmara region do not have very significant problem in their soil chemical compositions. Therefore, in order to improve these pastures, prescribed grazing management or weed/vegetation management practices should be applied.

An increase in the use of medicinal plants in Europe has resulted in a parallel development in this direction in Turkey. A large number of flowering plants as well as mushrooms collected with this aim from the wild are sold at the markets or consumed by the public directly after collection. Many times consumption of such plants in particular mushrooms as a whole or parts thereof produce a poisonous effect and even prove fatal. More than 50 poisonous taxa are widely distributed in West Anatolia, 20 of these being mushrooms. Objective: To evaluate the effect of transferring open-heart surgery patients from the operating room to the intensive care unit on hemodynamic parameters and blood gases. Methods: The study was conducted as a prospective, observational study at the German Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey in 2007. Hemodynamic, blood gas values, and oxygen saturation measured by pulse oximetry (SpO2) values were recorded in 37 patients who had undergone open-heart surgery. Data were evaluated by descriptive statistical methods, Friedman's test, and correlation analysis. Results: Thirty-seven patients were included in this study. Pollen grains of nine endemic Turkish Centaurea L. were studied by using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The species are: C. spicata Boiss. (Sect: Cynaroides), C. tomentella Hand.-Mazz. (Sect: Cynaroides), C. screlolepis Boiss. (Sect: Cynaroides), C. amonicola Hub.-Mor. (Sect: Cynaroides), C. kurdica Reichardt (Sect: Cynaroides), C. haussknetchii Boiss. (Sect: Cynaroides), C. odyssei Wagenitz (Sect: Pteracantha), C. polyclada DC. (Sect: Acrolophus) and C. consanguinea DC. (Sect: Acrolophus)). The polen grains are tricolporate, prolate to prolate spheroidal, with sparsely or densely distributed spinules ranging from 0.50 to 1.73 ?m height and with irregular pores. P/E ratio in the grains ranges between 1.05 and 1.73. It was determined that the pollen features could be used in separation of some species studied. © EuroJournals Publishing, Inc. 2007.

La Centaurea dealbata Willd. (familia: Asteraceae) pertenece al género Centaurea, que comprende unas 500 especies. Para evaluar la actividad antioxidante y la toxicidad general de los extractos de n-hexano, diclorometano (DCM) y metanol (MeOH) de las semillas de C. dealbata se han utilizado, respectivamente, el ensayo DPPH y el ensayo de letalidad de gambas en salmuera. Tanto el extracto de DCM como el de MeOH presentaron niveles signifi cativos de actividad antioxidante, con valores de RC50 de 6,8 x 10-2 y 4,7 x 10-2 mg/mL, respectivamente. Ninguno de los extractos presentó una toxicidad general signifi cativa (LD50 = >1000 mg/mL). Se observó que los tres principales componentes bioactivos del extracto de MeOH fueron los lignanos arctigenina, arctiina y matairesinosida. Las estructuras de estos lignanos se dilucidaron mediante análisis espectroscópicos exhaustivos y comparación directa con los datos respectivos publicados. Éste es el primer informe sobre la ocurrencia de arctiina y matairesinol en C. dealbata. También se presenta la distribución de estos lignanos dentro del género Centaurea., Centaurea dealbata Willd. (Family: Asteraceae) belongs to the big genus Centaurea that comprises ca. 500 species. The n-hexane, dichloromethane (DCM) and methanol (MeOH) extracts of the seeds of C. dealbata have been assessed for antioxidant activity and general toxicity using, respectively, the DPPH assay, and the brine shrimp lethality assay. Both the DCM and the MeOH extract showed signifi cant levels of antioxidant activities with an RC50 value 6.8 x 10-2 and 4.7 x 10-2 mg/mL, respectively. None of the extracts exhibited any signifi cant general toxicity (LD50 = >1000 mg/mL). Three major bioactive components of the MeOH extract were found to be the lignans, arctigenin, arctiin and matairesinoside. The structures of these lignans were elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic analyses, and also by direct comparison with the respective published data. This is the fi rst report on the occurrence of arctiin and matairesionl in C. dealbata. The distribution of these lignans within the genus Centaurea has also been presented.

This report contains a comprehensive technical description of a new international research infrastructure, the European X-Ray Free-Electron Laser (XFEL) Facility. It was written between October 2005 and June 2006 and provides a realistic cost estimate and a compelling assessment of the scientific pay-off. The report has been prepared with the contribution of hundreds of people from many laboratories in Europe and even beyond. The effects of the phosphodiesterase (PDE) 5 inhibitors on anxiety are not fully understood. The aim of present study was to investigate the possible role of sildenafil, an inhibitor of cyclic GMP-specific phosphodiesterase, on anxiety in the plus-maze test in mice. Sildenafil at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg had no significant effect on the behavior in the plus-maze test but at doses of 1 and 3 mg/kg induced an anxiogenic effect. The combination of sildenafil (1 mg/kg, ip) and methylene blue (1 mg/kg, ip) abolished the anxiogenic-like effect of sildenafil. The combination of sildenafil (1 mg/kg, ip) and L-arginine (50 mg/kg, ip) decreased the percentage of time spent in open arms compared to saline-treated group. Diazepam at a dose of 2 mg/kg significantly increased the percentage of time spent in open arms (p < 0.05). Sildenafil at a dose of 3 mg/kg and the combination of L-arginine (50 mg/kg, ip) and sildenafil (I mg/kg, ip) significantly decreased the locomotor activity (p < 0.05). These results suggest that a nitric oxide-cGMP pathway seems to play an important role in sildenafil-induced anxiogenic-like effect.

Groups of mice received propofol (20, 40, 60 mg/kg) or diazepam (2 mg/ kg), caffeine (3 0 mg/kg), L-arginine (100 mg/kg), m-chlorophenylpiperazine (m-CPP, 2.5 mg/kg) and then were placed in an elevated plus-maze that was composed of two opposite closed arms and two opposite open arms. Propofol (20, 40, 60 mg/kg) and diazepam (2 mg/kg) significantly increased the percentage of time spent in the open arms compared to control. Caffeine (30 mg/kg) and m-CPP (2.5 mg/kg) decreased the percentage of time spent in the open arms and these effects were antagonized when propofol (40 mg/kg) was administered before the test. L-arginine (100 mg/kg) has also produced anxiogenic effect and this effect was not prevented by propofol. All drugs used in this study did not significantly change locomotor activity. These results suggest that propofol has anxiolytic effect in plus-maze test.
