Magnetron sputtered Ag:TiN thin films, with Ag contents ranging from 0 to ~50 at. %, were subjected to a set of annealing treatments at four different temperatures (from 200 to 500 °C), aiming at studying the effect of Ag addition on their morphological and structural features, as well as on their electrical and mechanical properties. The increase of the annealing temperature revealed that significant morphological modifications were induced, mainly in the samples with higher Ag contents (represented by the sample with an Ag content of 36.3 at. %), which revealed extensive Ag segregation to the surface. The increase of the annealing temperature up to 500 °C, besides confirming the presence of metallic Ag in the coatings, also resulted in some major structural changes, promoting an increase in the coating's crystallinity and an extensive Ag grain growth phenomenon. Nevertheless, the resistivity values of all annealed samples were found to be only slightly higher when comparing to the as-deposited ones, which indicated that beyond the significant changes in the samples morphology (e.g., Ag segregation), there seemed to be some important coating resistance in terms of the electrical response. Furthermore, the annealed samples also exhibited lower reduced modulus up to 400 °C when compared with the unannealed ones, consistent with some increase of the samples' elasticity. This paper reviews thin films constituted by elements based on the Ti–Al–N system, bearing in mind the role of the condensed phases in the development of structural components and functional devices. In recent decades, the Ti–Al, Ti–N and Al–N nanocrystalline binary systems have rapidly attracted research and industry interest. These systems have revealed a great performance via atomic-level structural control, making it possible to tailor new atomic structures and morphologies suitable in different applications as protective and hard coatings and as thermal/diffusion barriers. The binary phases based on nitrogen were the first to exhibit a wealth of interesting mechanical and electrochemical behaviours. However, more recently the Ti-Al and, particularly, the Ti1 − x Al x N thin films have been applied with success in the industry. The purpose of this paper is to compile the master results concerning the production and characterisation of binary and ternary thin films of the Ti–Al–N system using similar deposition strategies. These materials form a good base to analyse the correlation between the chemical composition and the atomic structure, the preferred orientations and the morphology of 2D monolithic materials. The deposition strategies adopted and the thin films’ chemical compositions determine the as-deposited structures and, consequently, the mechanical behaviour of the thin films produced, particularly the hardness. In general, an intermediary amorphous stage is observed, i.e., the thin films exhibit a loss of crystallinity in the transition from a saturated solid solution to a new compound. The present work aims to study the impact of O and N addition on Cr-sputtered coatings on plastic (polycarbonate, PC) used in automobile parts, as a promisor alternative for auto part metallization, while eliminating the usage of toxic hexavalent chromium. The coatings were deposited using DC magnetron sputtering from a single pure Cr target in a reactive atmosphere (N2 and/or O2). The deposition of the coatings was performed maintaining the total pressure constant and close to 1 Pa by tuning Ar pressure while reactive gases were added. The target current density was kept at JW = 20 mA·cm−2. Structural characterization revealed a mixture of α-Cr, δ-Cr, β-Cr2N, and CrN crystalline structures as well as amorphous oxides. The coating hardness ranged from 9 GPa for the CrON coating to 15 GPa for the CrN coating. All deposited coatings showed a particularly good interface adhesion; adjusting the amount of O and N made it possible to tune the optical properties of the Cr-based coatings as desired. In this paper we use density functional theory calculations to investigate Ag-related point defects, adhesion energies and Ag diffusion energy barriers in TiN bulk, surfaces and grain boundaries. Classical molecular dynamics simulations have been performed on TiN(Ag) systems using a hybrid MEAM/Mie force field, to understand the relative importance of the different diffusion processes. Novel multilayered films were engineered by integrating W 2 N and Ag-SiN x layers in a multilayer structure to obtain improved hardness and tribological properties. The films were fabricated by alternating magnetron sputtering, depositing 40 nm layers of W 2 N with varying thickness of Ag-SiN x layers varying in thickness from 4 to 20 nm. The effect of the increase thickness of the Ag-SiN x layers in the films microstructure and tribological properties were accessed. Tribological experiments were conducted at room temperature (RT), 500 °C, and RT-500 °C cycling conditions. The results revealed the production of a multilayered structure comprising single fcc-W 2 N layers interspersed with dual-phase layers consisting of fcc-Ag and amorphous SiN x phases. Tribological results indicated an improvement in the tribological performance with increase thickness of the Ag-SiN x layer up to 12 nm. The tribo-synergistic/combined action of both W 2 N and Ag-SiN x layers, along with the presence of layered lubricant tribo-phases of WO 3 and Ag 2 WO 4 , showcased the pivot role in reducing friction and enhancing wear resistance. The optimized multilayered film, featuring a 12 nm Ag-SiN x layer, demonstrated exceptional tribological properties under temperature-cycling from RT to 500 °C. The poor adhesion and chemical and thermal stability of plasmonic nanostructures deposited on solid surfaces are a hindrance to the longevity and long-term development of robust localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-based systems. In this paper, we have deposited gold (Au) nanolayers with thicknesses above the percolation limit over glass substrates and have used a thermal annealing treatment at a temperature above the substrate's glass transition temperature to promote the dewetting, recrystallization, and thermal embedding of Au nanoparticles (NPs). Due to the partial embedding in glass, the NPs were strongly adherent to the surface of the substrate and were able to resist to the commonly used cleaning procedures and mechanical adhesion tests alike. The reflectivity of the embedded nanostructures was studied and shown to be strongly dependent on the NP size/shape distributions and on the degree of NP embedding. Strong optical scattering bands with increasing width and redshifted LSPR peak position were observed with the Au content. Refractive index sensitivity (RIS) values between 150 and 360 nm/RIU (concerning LSPR band edge shift) or between 32 and 72 nm/RIU (concerning LSPR peak position shift) were obtained for the samples having narrower LSPR extinction bands. These robust LSPR sensors can be used following a simple excitation/detection scheme consisting of a reflectance measurement at a fixed angle and wavelength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Friction and wear contribute to high energetic losses that reduce the efficiency of mechanical systems. However, carbon alloyed transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD-C) coatings possess low friction coefficients in diverse environments and can self-adapt to various sliding conditions. Hence, in this investigation, a semi-industrial magnetron sputtering device, operated in direct current mode (DC), is utilized to deposit several molybdenum-selenium-carbon (Mo-Se-C) coatings with a carbon content up to 60 atomic % (at. %). Then, the carbon content influence on the final properties of the films is analysed using several structural, mechanical and tribological characterization techniques. With an increasing carbon content in the Mo-Se-C films, lower Se/Mo ratio, porosity and roughness appeared, while the hardness and compactness increased. Pin-on-disk (POD) experiments performed in humid air disclosed that the Mo-Se-C vs. nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) friction is higher than Mo-Se-C vs. steel friction, and the coefficient of friction (CoF) is higher at 25 °C than at 200 °C, for both steel and NBR countersurfaces. In terms of wear, the Mo-Se-C coatings with 51 at. % C showed the lowest specific wear rates of all carbon content films when sliding against steel. • The DOMS allowed the deposition of DLC films with hardness up to 22 GPa. • All DLC coatings showed no sign of failure after the tribological tests. • Low friction coefficients and specific wear rates were obtained. • Higher wear resistance of Ne films is reached with only a small increase of the CoF. Several authors have reported that partially or even totally replacing the conventional Ar sputtering gas with Ne in HiPIMS plasmas results in significant improvement of mechanical and tribological properties of the DLC coatings. In this work, the tribological properties of the produced DLC films with different substrate biasing and Ne contents in discharge gas were evaluated. The tribological properties of the DLC films were evaluated on a reciprocating sliding machine. All DLC films showed no sign of failure after the tribological tests. The higher wear resistance of DLC films produced in Ar-Ne discharges is reached with only a small increase of the coefficient of friction. The conjunction of the low friction coefficient (between 0.10 and 0.18) and specific wear rate (between 4 × 10−17 and 7 × 10−17 m3/Nm) obtained by the DLC films (either deposited with −80 V of biasing or with Ne) in this work, is possible to affirm that these films are good candidates to replace the CrN films used in many applications of the automotive industry. The influence of energetic ion bombardment on the properties of tantalum coatings was studied. To achieve such energetic ion bombardment during the deposition process of tantalum coatings, a combination of deep oscillation magnetron sputtering (DOMS), an ionized physical vapour deposition technique, with substrate biasing was used. The substrate biasing was varied between 0 and −120 V. In this work, the structure (XRD), microstructure (SEM), surface morphology (AFM) and hardness, and Young's modulus (nanoindentation) of the coatings were characterized. The results show with the use of such conditions it was possible to deposit a pure α-Ta (the most desired at industrial level) with improved mechanical properties (hardness equal to 22.4 GPa and Young's modulus equal to 235 GPa). The roughness of the Ta coatings decreases up to values of about 1 nm with an increase of substrate biasing. It was possible to deposit very dense Ta coatings with 2 µm of thickness. Therefore, these results are significantly different than in previous works, offering Ta coatings with a combination of very interesting properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, we compare the tribological performance of a multilayer TiSiN/Ti(Ag)N coating with a TiSiN/TiN coating with a similar Si content in order to demonstrate the effect of the solid lubricant phase, silver. For Al2O3 balls, the hardness and reduced modulus determine the tribological performance of the coatings for tests conducted at room temperature (RT) against Al2O3 balls. At 550 °C, the TiSiN/TiN coating failed, whereas the Ag-containing coating performed better due to the presence of Ag in the contact, which decreased the shear stress and, consequently, the friction. For tests against TiAl6V4 balls, the Ag-containing coating was always better than the TiSiN/TiN one. At 550 °C, Ag in the wear track prevented the adhesion of the oxidized Ti-alloy wear debris in the contact, favoring the adhesion of wear debris from the coating to both the coating and counterpart surfaces. No wear could be measured for the 700 °C tests for both coatings due to different reasons: (i) the presence of oxidized adhered material from the ball to the reference TiSiN/TiN coating surface protected from wear and (ii) the presence of Ag-agglomerated particles decreased the friction and minimized the adhesion wear of the counterpart for the TiSiN/TiN(Ag) coating. It mentions the impact of high friction on society as its associated maintenance costs totals 5% of the gross domestic product (GDP) of an industrialised country. It also notes the development of a nanostructured design of ultra-low friction coatings.

Recently, the use of Ne as a processing gas has been shown to increase the ionization degree of carbon in High Power Impulse Magnetron Sputtering (HiPIMS) plasmas. In this work, time-resolved measurements of the substrate's current density were carried out in order to study the time evolution of the ionic species arriving at the growing film. The addition of Ne to the plasma resulted in a steep increase of the sp3/sp2 ratio in the films once the Ne contents in the processing atmosphere exceeded 26%. Increasing the Ne content is shown to increase both the total number of C ions generated in the plasmas and the ratio of C/gaseous ions. The time-resolved substrate ion current density was used to evaluate the possibility of substrate biasing synchronizing with the discharge pulses in the HiPIMS process. It is shown that in pure Ar plasmas, substrate biasing should be confined to the time interval between 25 and 40 µs after the pulse starts, in order to maximize the C+/Ar+ ratio bombarding the substrate and minimize the formation of film stresses. However, Ne addition to the processing gas shortens the traveling time of the carbon species towards the substrate, reducing the separation between the gaseous and carbon ion arrival times. Carbon-based coatings are used in many applications, particularly in sliding contacts to reduce friction and wear. To improve the tribological properties, these coatings are usually alloyed with metals; W is one of the most used since it helps improve the tribological performance at high temperatures. In this work, we compared the tribological performance of Diamond-Like Carbon alloyed with tungsten (DLC-W) films deposited by direct current magnetron sputtering (DCMS) with films deposited in a hybrid configuration DCMS + high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HiPIMS). The DLC-W coatings were produced with approximately the same W content. One hydrogenated film was deposited with the hybrid configuration for comparison purposes. Microstructure, structure, mechanical properties, and tribological behaviour were used to compare the coatings. All the films displayed a low-order structure of tungsten carbide embedded in an amorphous carbon matrix. The use of the hybrid HiPIMS/DCMS results in coatings with more compact morphologies due to the high ionization fraction of the species produced on the W target (W and Ar ionized species), which primarily will oppose the shadowing effect as the ions will reach the substrate at angles close to 90°. HiPIMS non-hydrogenated film is the more tribological, performing either at room or high temperature (150 °C) due to the much more compact morphology, which avoids the detachment of hard W-C particles, which are responsible for more efficiently scratching the film surface. Experiments revealed that wear behaviour in all the films is governed by the contact of the tribolayer formed on the counterpart composed of W–C, C and W–O against the surface of the film. Carbon-alloyed transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) coatings have great potential for providing a good tribological response in diverse operating environments. There are different ways to synthesize these coatings by magnetron sputtering, with no clear indication of the best possible route for potential upscaling. In this study, tungsten-sulfur-carbon (W-S-C) coatings were deposited by radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering via four different methods. All coatings were sub-stoichiometric in terms of the S/W ratio, with the bombardment of the growing film with backscattered Ar neutrals being the main mechanism governing the S/W ratio. The crystallinity of the films was dependent on the C and S contents. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed W-S and W-C bonding in all coatings. Raman spectroscopy showed the presence of an a-C phase with predominant sp2 bonding. The hardness of the coatings may be related to the C content and the S/W ratio. A friction coefficient of 0.06–0.08 was achieved during sliding in ambient air by the coatings deposited in non-reactive mode with optimal C contents. The results indicate that sputtering in non-reactive mode should be the method of choice for synthesis of these coatings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Low stoichiometry, low crystallinity, low hardness and incongruencies involving the reported microstructure have limited the applicability of TMD-C (Transition metal dichalcogenides with carbon) solid-lubricant coatings. In this work, optimized Mo–Se–C coatings were deposited using confocal plasma magnetron sputtering to overcome the above-mentioned issues. Two different approaches were used; MoSe2 target powered by DC (direct current) or RF (radio frequency) magnetron sputtering. Carbon was always added by DC magnetron sputtering. Wavelength dispersive spectroscopy displayed Se/Mo stoichiometry of ~2, values higher than the literature. The Se/Mo ratio for RF-deposited coatings was lower than for their DC counterparts. Scanning electron microscopy showed that irrespective of the low carbon additions, the Mo–Se–C coatings were highly compact with no vestiges of columnar growth due to optimal bombardment of sputtered species. Application of substrate bias further improved compactness at the expense of lower Se/Mo ratio. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy confirmed the presence of MoSe2 crystals, and (002) basal planes. Even very low carbon additions led to an improvement of the hardness of the coatings. The work reports a comparison between RF and DC sputtering of MoSe2 coatings with carbon and provides a guideline to optimize the composition, morphology, structure, and mechanical properties. Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) gas sensors are gaining increasing importance due to their unique tuneable functional properties. Au-WO3−x nanocomposite coatings, in particular, can be outstandingly sensitive to many different gases. However, a proper understanding of their optical properties and the way in which those properties are correlated to their structure/microstructure, is still needed. In this work, Au-WO3 nanocomposite coatings, with Au contents between 0–11 atomic percent, were grown using reactive magnetron co-sputtering technique and were characterized concerning their optical response. The precipitation of Au nanoparticles in the oxide matrix was promoted through thermal annealing treatments until 500 °C. Along with the Au nanoparticles' morphological changes, the annealing treatments stimulated the crystallization of WO3, together with the appearance of oxygen-deficient WO3−x phases. Through theoretical simulations, we have related the LSPR effect with the different structural and morphological variations (namely, size and distribution of the nanoparticles and their local environment), which were a function of the Au content and annealing temperature. Our results suggest that local voids were present in the vicinity of the Au nanoparticles, for all temperature range, and that they should be present in a wide variety of Au-WO3 nanocomposites. Aluminium metal forming is often performed at elevated temperatures which can cause significant galling, damage to the produced parts and increased manufacturing costs. Self-lubricating thin films deposited by magnetron sputtering are good candidates for alleviating this issue. In this study we deposited three types of films containing transition metal dichalcogenides, of which one consisted only of WS x and two films were alloyed with carbon. The aim of the work was to assess the ability of these coatings to reduce galling in sliding contacts with aluminium at elevated temperatures. The thermal analysis indicated that the maximum operating temperature should be ~400–430 °C, for the pure WS coating, and a higher value of ~480–490 for the carbon alloyed films. The coatings managed to provide friction reduction in all the testing conditions, except for the carbon alloyed one with the highest amount of carbon which could not provide lubrication against aluminium at 400 °C. • Only the WS coating displayed crystals of WS 2 during XRD analysis. • Carbon-alloyed coating showed better thermal stability (up to ~490 °C). • Very good adhesion of the coatings with the tool steel. • Unalloyed WS coating provided friction reduction without instabilities. Magnetron sputtering has been employed for several decades to produce protective and multi-functional coatings, thanks to its versatility and ability to achieve homogeneous layers. Moreover, it is suitable for depositing coatings with very high melting points and that are thermodynamical unstable, which is difficult to accomplish by other techniques. Among these types of coating, transition metal (Me) carbides/nitrides (MeC/N) and amorphous carbon (a-C) films are particularly interesting because of the possibility of tailoring their properties by selecting the correct amount of phase fractions, varying from pure MeN, MeC, MeCN to pure a-C phases. This complex phase mixture can be even enhanced by adding a fourth element such Ag, Pt, W, Ti, Si, etc., allowing the production of materials with a large diversity of properties. The mixture of phases, resulting from the immiscibility of phases, allows increasing the number of applications, since each phase can contribute with a specific property such as hardness, self-lubrication, antibacterial ability, to create a multifunctional material. However, the existence of different phases, their fractions variation, the type of transition metal and/or alloying element, can drastically alter the global electrochemical behaviour of these films, with a strong impact on their stability. Consequently, it is imperative to understand how the main features intrinsic to the production process, as well as induced by Me and/or the alloying element, influence the characteristics and properties of the coatings and how these affect their electrochemical behaviour. Therefore, this review will focus on the fundamental aspects of the electrochemical behaviour of magnetron-sputtered films as well as of the substrate/film assembly. Special emphasis will be given to the influence of simulated body fluids on the electrochemical behaviour of coatings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
