This study intends to explain whether or not emotional exhaustion and organisational commitment of Catholic primary school teachers in Merauke regency correlate prospectively. This study was guided by one research question: 'Does the Catholic primary school teachers' emotional exhaustion and organisational commitment correlate significantly negatively?' To answer the research question, two survey questionnaires were disseminated to 157 teachers. Employing the SPSS programme version 21, the study shown a significant negative correlation among the surveyed research variables. The findings may be authoritative for the Catholic primary school leaders and the Chief of the Catholic Foundation for Education in Merauke regency, Indonesia, to take major efforts to eliminate emotional exhaustion of teachers in order to foster the organisational commitment of teachers at the Catholic primary schools to teaching the youth.

The study focused on Christian values education and holistic child development in a catholic school and a non-sectarian school both located in Isabela Province. Ten Christian values espoused in a Christian Values Education program was evaluated to be practiced and manifested and correlated to five holistic child development domains. A total of 100 parent respondents come from each of the Catholic and Non-Sectarian school through random sampling. It employed a survey assessment tool gathered results were treatment statistically aligned with study objectives. The study reveals that based on computed r-values, there is a significant correlation between Christian value education and holistic child development at 0.01 level of significance among pupils of a Catholic School while in non-sectarian school, computed r-values indicate that there is no significant correlation between Christian value education and holistic child development at p-value 0.01 level of significance except in emotional and spiritual development among pupils of a non-sectarian school. Moreover t-value results reveal that there are significant differences in Christian Values repentance, reconciliation, faith, worship of God, perseverance, obedience and hope while there is not significant different in the Christian values of stewardship, trustworthiness and responsibility among pupils in a Catholic and Non Sectarian School. While for holistic child development, t-value results reveal that there are significant differences in all holistic child development aspects among pupils of a Catholic and Non-Sectarian School except in the aspect of physical development where there is no significant difference found in this development area.

Members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender + (LGBT+) undergraduate student community are at heightened risk for a variety of health and mental health challenges due to unsupportive environments which may include home, school, and society. However, research underscores the importance of mentors, mentorship, and other social supports upon the mental health of LGBT+ youth, especially when navigating discriminatory experiences. An online survey was conducted among LGBT+ undergraduate college students within one mid-sized university located in the Midwest to assess experiences with discrimination, perceptions of mentoring, and the beneficial components of mentoring programs. 289 LGBT+ undergraduate students (65.7% cisgender female, 47.8% ages 19-20, 51.2% bisexual) responded with 71.6% of participants reporting no current LGBT+ mentor. 56.4% either agreed or strongly agreed that acceptance of the LGBT+ community could be improved at the university. Discussion centers upon the importance of mentoring programs for LGBT+ undergraduate students to provide support and create a more affirming college experience.

This study examines how access to the academic curriculum creates patterns of inequality in Australian schools. Examining students' access to the academic curriculum gives an indication of how schooling is structured to support students in pursuing higher education opportunities. To date, little research attention has been given to the opportunities schools offer students to access the academic curriculum in order to enter university. Using administrative data on students and schools, we find that there are fewer average curriculum subjects, and less complexity in the subjects offered, in schools with low levels of socio-educational advantage. We argue that curriculum differentiation across schools is a systemic constraint that students in schools with higher levels of socio-educational disadvantage face in progressing to university because these schools are less able to provide students with access to core academic curriculum subjects in the final year of secondary school. Previous research has highlighted the social differences reflected in both educational access and outcomes due to the marketisation of schools and policies of school choice. Our findings indeed demonstrate that there are relationships between access to the academic curriculum, school socio-educational advantage and the social composition of schools, and these factors have important educational policy implications.

School closures and the move to remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic transformed teaching and learning in Australian schools. Educators experienced personal and professional challenges as they rapidly responded to the needs of their school communities and managed their own emotional reactions. Eleven educators at two Victorian schools in areas of low socioeconomic status discussed in focus groups the impact of school closures and explored their perceptions of responses from leaders and colleagues who supported their wellbeing. While naming the significance of uncertainty, constant change and increased workloads, these educators acted creatively to ensure their students had access to specifically developed learning materials to suit their needs. Educators demonstrated that they could use existing reflective structures that fostered mutual support to sustain their wellbeing and create supportive environments for themselves and their wider school communities in times of crisis, as well as remain open to sometimes-surprising learning opportunities.

A recontextualising approach in religious education has been adopted in the newly revised religious education curricula of the four dioceses in Victoria: the dioceses of Melbourne, Ballarat, Sandhurst and Sale. This approach requires a radical change to the teacher's role from knowledge transmission to one which supports students to grapple with their own identity formation in dialogue with the Catholic tradition. This article describes a collaborative research project undertaken by Catholic Education Office leaders of the four Victorian dioceses seeking to understand learning conditions and processes for leading teacher professional learning around a recontextualising approach. This study illuminates the description of recontextualisation in five criteria as proposed by Leuven Professor Pollefeyt (2017) by situating them in the practical context of teacher professional learning in Catholic schools. Using an Action Research methodology, the project engaged system leaders and teachers in Catholic schools in cycles of collegial dialogue and reflection on practice and theory to develop and refine understandings and classroom practices of recontextualisation. The findings challenge a system to consider how it intentionally positions itself in relation to the schools it serves.

France's secular political culture, Catholic heritage, and tumultuous relationship with Islam have had a significant impact on 21st-century interpretations, perceptions, and politicisations of religious education in French society. Since religious education is relegated to the French private school system, it is decentralised, complex, and vastly plural -- especially compared to France's hyper-centralised public education. Religious education's plurality and decentralisation have deepened with the recent expansion of Muslim and independent schooling. This article offers a comparative analysis of the variety of interpretations and manifestations of religious education across France's private education system. Drawing upon extensive ethnographic fieldwork carried out in more than fifteen French private Muslim, Catholic, and secular schools intermittently from 2012 to 2020, I illustrate how Catholic school actors and supposedly 'secular' school actors imparting Christian culture can operate with significantly more freedom than their Muslim school counterparts. Despite significant variation in approaches to religious education across the system, religious education in Muslim schools is quite parallel to other schooling communities. Nonetheless, Muslim school actors face disproportionate barriers to equitable treatment. This discrimination is facilitated by the complexities and ambiguities of RE and is representative of efforts to restrict the imparting of Muslim culture(s) to youth in French schools.

The learning environment plays a crucial role in the promotion of school science. Redesigning the science classroom into a metacognitive learning environment is imperative in developing students' 21st century skills -- communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creative thinking. In this study, we exposed the students to a variety of metacognitive activities -- allowing them to plan, reflect, and evaluate their thinking skills and strategies. We intended to investigate the effectiveness of integrating metacognitive-enhanced and self-regulated learning strategies in understanding molecular genetics. We also explored and interpolated the roles of self-efficacy and metacognition in relation to their impact on Filipino students' scientific reasoning skills and conceptual understanding in the context of a Philippine science classroom. To establish a more comprehensive perspective, we applied the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) action research model, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative methods to find answers to the research problems. The results of the study highlighted the interconnectedness and interplay of science self-efficacy, metacognitive awareness, metacognitive-orientation of the classroom, and the scientific conceptual understanding of the students. These are crucial constructs in creating and maintaining a metacognitive orientation of the science classroom. The study also shows that science self-efficacy has a vital role in predicting the academic achievement of students.

Results from a case study, Regis Jesuit High School are reported. The case study methodology for this study is mixed with qualitative data coming from several internal documents and witness accounts along with quantitative data that catalogs the hiring and interview demographic data spanning March of 2018 to fall of 2019. This became a major strategic institutional initiative as it was concluded by racially diverse families, the diversity directors, faculty, and parent diversity committees who concluded this as the most important area of growth in creating a more inclusive culturally responsive climate at Regis Jesuit. This study explores Regis Jesuit High School's processes and the complexity in trying to achieve this goal.

Although there have been gradual progressive attitudinal shifts (Garvey, Sanders, & Flint, 2017), LGBTQ+ students experience a chillier campus climate (Beemyn & Rankin, 2011; Garvey, Viray, Stango, Estep, & Jaeger, 2019; Rankin, 2005; Rankin, Weber, Blumenfeld, & Frazer, 2010) due to persistent experiences of violence, intimidation, and aggression (Bieschke, Eberz, & Wilson, 2000; Greathouse et al., 2018; Rankin et al., 2010) than their cisgender and straight-identified counterparts. This climate has had adverse effects on LGBTQ+ students' experiences and participation in curricular (Linley & Nguyen, 2015) and cocurricular (Bazarsky, Morrow, & Javier, 2015; Rankin, Hesp, & Weber, 2013) contexts as well as their overall sense of belonging (Budge, Dominguez, & Goldberg, 2020; Strayhorn, 2012; Vaccaro & Newman, 2017). Catholic institutions associated with religious orders such as the Jesuits, Benedictines, and Marianists may be more likely to support LGBTQ+ community issues (McEntarfer, 2011; Yoakam, 2006). Yet even LGBTQ+ students at Catholic institutions with more inclusive policies and services, dedicated resource centers, and student organizations, report frequent microaggressions (Hughes, 2019). This article reports on the challenges facing LGBTQ+ students at Catholic institutions and how one institution's library is reckoning with how to ally with and for these students.

This article reports on research into the influence of teachers' religious beliefs in religious education. Drawing on accounts from eleven teachers in Controlled Schools in Northern Ireland, it shows the contested space many of them occupy in relation to handling personal beliefs, teaching about diverse religions and articulating a public rationale for their subject in the face of challenges from pupils and parents. In particular, we investigate how and why they teach World Religions in the way that they do. The findings are considered in the light of debates on the role of teachers' beliefs in religious education. In contrast to other studies in this field which offer personal reflection as a way to resolve such challenges, the case is made here for understanding teachers' choices within a wider lens which acknowledges the public nature of the space within which they operate. We argue that the challenges cannot be resolved or mitigated by individuals alone. Changes in policy to provide an inclusive and balanced curriculum with robust pedagogical purposes is needed along with clear ethical expectations around how teachers approach teaching religious education.

Determining the depth of discrimination against gender and sexual minority groups in Catholic schools of selected western nations is best undertaken from an international-comparative perspective. In this article, we compare the Canadian case of Alberta's 'washroom wars' and a 'gender row' over uniform changes in an Australian Catholic high school. In each case, practises inclusive of gender diversity in Catholic schools were framed as a departure from Catholic doctrine. To explore how oppressive structures exist and operate within schools, we examine media accounts of each case using Critical Discourse Analysis and contextualize this analysis by examining Canadian and Australian educational and legal settings. We find that despite differing legal frameworks, some Catholic schools continue to place Canonical law above the rights of transgender and gender-diverse students in both countries. We therefore argue that it is the Catholic system's institutional stance on gender and sexual diversity that perpetuates discrimination.

In this study, we focused on teachers' knowledge and awareness of LGBT+ issues in a Catholic secondary school in Ireland. We explored the barriers teachers encounter that prevent them from being openly supportive of LGBT+ students. For this study, 40 teachers completed an online questionnaire, which was followed by a smaller focus group interview comprising 6 teachers. The findings demonstrate a lack of knowledge about LGBT+ issues among teachers, and the majority have not received any training related to this topic. This can be linked with their lack of awareness of policies, supports, and resources available to help LGBT+ students. The findings suggest a lack of self-awareness because some teachers were not supportive of issues that affect LGBT+ students but believed otherwise. It also is clear from the results that there are mixed perceptions of what is acceptable to discuss and support due to the Catholic ethos of the school. These findings reflect several barriers to supporting LGBT+ students and issues.

This replicated research project [see Hine, G. S. C. (2019). Reasons why I didn't enrol in a higher-level mathematics course: Listening to the voice of Australian senior secondary students. "Research in Mathematics Education," 21(3), 295-313. https://doi.org/10.1080/14794802.2019.15999982019] explored the reasons why senior secondary (i.e. Year 11 and Year 12) students elected not to enrol in a higher-level mathematics course. For this project, all senior secondary Australian Tertiary Admissions Ranking (ATAR) students within Western Australian schools (aged 17-18 years) were invited to participate in an anonymous, online survey comprised predominantly of qualitative items. The researcher analysed 1633 ATAR students' perspectives of enrolments in mathematics courses, according to a symbolic interactionist paradigm. Reasons included the extent to which students feel higher-level courses are too challenging, time-consuming, not required for university nor future life, and requiring more effort and stress to complete than lower-level mathematics courses. Especially outlined is the extent to which participants feel a 10% bonus is a sufficient incentive to increase higher-level course enrolments, an extension of the original project. Participants indicated a range of responses either supporting or opposing this incentive. While approximately 47% of participants agree that the incentive is sufficient, a small proportion of these supporters offer their agreement conditionally. Within the proportion asserting the incentive is insufficient, a majority of participants suggested that a higher percentage bonus should be offered to students enrolled in Mathematics Specialist.

There is evidence that student attitudes towards mathematics become more negative as students move through their schooling. However, less is known about the different factors that shape student attitudes at various stages. This qualitative study sought to shed light on this issue and consider how stage of schooling influenced self-perceived supports for what helped underperforming students to learn mathematics. One hundred and seventy-nine students in Grades 2/3 and 5/6 completed a questionnaire before they participated in a mathematics intervention program, targeting students who had fallen behind in mathematics. Participating students were asked to complete the sentence stem. The best thing about learning mathematics in my classroom is…and answered the question: What helps you learn mathematics in the classroom? Thematic analysis revealed that the majority of younger students emphasized specific tasks (e.g. games) and mathematical content areas (e.g. counting) when describing the best thing about learning mathematics at school and were twice as likely to highlight such aspects compared with older students. By contrast, older students were far more likely to indicate the importance of being supported directly by their teacher or peers when learning mathematics, compared with younger students.

This paper makes a novel and important contribution to scholarship by developing and presenting a set of concepts and questions for those researching student voice in Ireland to consider and explore in their studies, and specifically in relation to classroom practice at post-primary level. Here, a distinction is drawn between consultations that take place inside classrooms between students and teachers and consultations that take place between management and students and cognisance is paid to school patronage, school socio-economic context, and the career stage of teachers and positions in the school hierarchy. This paper ultimately offers a heuristic device as a starting point for future research on student voice in Irish post-primary schools and sets out to bring about more critical thinking regarding how student voice plays out vis-à-vis classroom practice.

Despite the outsized influence the Catholic school sector in the United States has on policymaking, research into the organization of Catholic schools has not kept pace with contemporary educational research trends. In this brief paper, we diagnose how conceptual and empirical decisions made within the field of Catholic education resulted in the field's relative isolation from other research communities and highlight additional explanations for the diminished relevance of research into Catholic schooling in the United States in recent years. Following this diagnosis and synthesis, we argue that Catholic educational research would be enhanced by considering contemporary organizational and policy research trends and propose new directions that may allow U.S. Catholic school researchers to increase their field's relevance.

This paper presents findings emanating from a larger investigation. In essence, this qualitative project sought to uncover the ways in which early childhood Religious Education (RE) teachers' experience of a formation-based program, known as The T.I.T.U.S Project (Testament In Teachers Using Scripture), transformed their own religious literacy and subsequently, their teaching of RE; it is these findings that form the focus of this paper. Religious literacy is explained as consisting of more than content, to include the complex relationship of content with both context and learner. It is in this nexus between content, context and learner that The T.I.T.U.S Project resided. With existing literature clearly identifying teachers' lack of confidence in teaching scripture within RE, that is, in engaging with context and context as Cullen explains it, this research is significant. The findings from the qualitative survey, interview data and reflective journals suggest that teachers' own personal formational experiences and growth in religious literacy transformed their teaching of classroom Religious Education, including their confidence in teaching scripture.

Adopting a social cohesion framework, we consider how the shared education model in Northern Ireland reflects distributive, ideational and relational dimensions of social cohesion, and the processes through which its implementation may be contributing to a more socially cohesive society. We use this case study to reflect on the current conceptualisation of social cohesion in the literature and to argue for dynamic and interdependent connections between aspects of cohesion that are often assessed in isolation. Our analysis draws on the body of research on shared education that has accumulated since the first pilots were introduced in 2007.

According to Church statistics, 6.9 million children were enrolled in Catholic primary and secondary schools in Europe. Enrolment has remained relatively stable over the last 40 years in comparison to other regions of the world, contributing to education pluralism. This may be in part because in many countries, Catholic and private schools benefit from state funding, which helps in reducing out-of-pocket costs for parents to send their children to the schools. At the same time, public funding for private schools, including Catholic schools, often remains below the level of funding for public schools. This paper discusses enrolment trends in Catholic schools over time, compares the level of public funding for private and public schools, and looks at the relationships (or lack thereof) between such funding and enrolment in Catholic and private schools.

This article focuses on two major issues in contemporary Catholic social justice: care for the poor and the inclusion of migrants and refugees. The care for the poor is examined in the gospels and in the contemporary articulation of the preferential option for the poor, drawing on the theology of Gustavo Gutiérrez and Jon Sobrino. Pope Francis and his 'preferential option for the migrants, refugees and asylum seekers' is examined in some depth through some key writings and homilies. Care for the poor and the inclusion of migrants and refugees are explored in relation to Catholic education, primarily in relation to Catholic schools and Catholic support for other schools. Some key historical and contemporary figures who intervened in their local context and established schools for the poor and marginalised are identified and discussed. The article provides some concrete examples of the Catholic church providing educational support for migrant and refugee children and young people in contemporary Bulgaria and Hungary.

This article will focus on the perennial impact of the Salesian education vision in in Salesian schools in the UK. Following an introduction outlining the history of the Salesian presence in the UK, the Salesian education vision will be explored, focused on its classical characteristics, reason, religion and loving kindness. The decline in the number of professed religious in the UK will be signposted, analogous to the decline across Europe, and the concomitant commitment to a collaboration between the Salesian congregation and lay people in a post-Vatican II context. The nature of Salesian accompaniment will then be surveyed alongside research evidence spanning a decade which constitutes evidential support for the perennial impact of the Salesian education vision.

Because it has experienced a process of secularisation for more than three centuries, France can be considered as a laboratory of the relevance of faith in a society for which it is no longer the cultural matrix. By showing how the central question of secularisation is in fact that of the relationship between faith and culture, this article proposes to consider Catholic schools as places where a new way for the Catholic Church to support humanity in its growth, at a personal and community level, is being elaborated.

In the long history of the Catholic school in Europe, it has taken various forms, linked to local cultures and to the history, particularly religious but also political, of each state. While it is possible to account for this diversity, it is also important to highlight common features and challenges, such as secularisation and globalisation, which question the identity of Catholic schools. It is by addressing these challenges that Catholic schools will maintain an original school model that inspires the public schools of the different educational systems present in Europe.

One of the major contributions of the Catholic school to the formation of people and to the mission of the Church is religious education. In the diversity of school systems in Europe, it is possible to identify three models: the politico-conciliar, the academic-curricular and the ethical-value-based. These models evolve in line with the religious reality of the societies in which they operate, but they retain their relevance in the name of the religious freedom that is at the heart of European democratic systems. Religious education thus contributes to the formation of citizens and to the integration of each individual in increasingly multicultural and multi-religious societies.

This paper presents a small-scale Critical Participatory Action Research (CPAR) study, investigating school leaders' efforts to enhance families' engagement in their children's learning, through classroom teachers' use of social media. The study occurred within three Australian primary schools, situated within a culturally and linguistically diverse community. Throughout two action research cycles the participating school leaders and classroom teachers critically reflected on family survey data and a sample of social media posts depicting student learning, so as to identify opportunities for enhanced family engagement. A practice lens was used to examine the sayings (words and language), doings (activities and resources) and relatings (relationships and power dynamics) featured within social media posts, to facilitate the participating leaders' critical self-reflection of current practice. Data were collected through surveys, semi-structured interviews, transcripts of reflective practice meetings and reflective practice tools utilised throughout the CPAR process. Analysis of practice architectures identified systemic features utilised by school leaders to support classroom teachers' practice change. Furthermore, this study highlights the significant role that school leaders have in facilitating classroom teachers' use of social media for family engagement.

This research reports an exploratory study of 22 pre-service teachers involved in the Religious Education courses offered by The University of Notre Dame Australia, as part of the university's accreditation to teach religious education. The study examined the influence of key factors on how confident these pre-service teachers perceived themselves to be to engage with the necessary knowledge to effectively teach religious education in a Catholic school. The pre-service teachers were surveyed pre and post their final-year internship, and subsequently, six of these were interviewed at the end of their first term of employment. Results indicated that out of the five compulsory courses, the two teaching method courses were found to be most influential in developing confidence to teach. Family, religious background, schooling, and mentoring were found to be influential in confidence development. In addition, confidence improved across the timeframe.

Purpose: This study aims to compare graduate student perspectives of online versus face-to-face (FTF) education during the pandemic at two different universities. One university, the "International University", was physically located in Korea but served an international base of students, and the other was a Jesuit, Catholic University in the USA. Design/methodology/approach: An online Qualtrics survey was used to gather student perceptions on a five-point Likert scale on individual and program factors. Chi-square analysis using the contingency coefficient as the nominal value was performed to uncover significant differences. Findings: Significant differences between the two groups existed on motivation, discipline, self-directed, independence, cost investment, preference, happiness, difficulty, student-to-student interaction and student-to-instructor interaction. This research has implications for instructors and administrators in identifying shortcomings and highlighting the uniqueness of different practices around the world. Originality/value: Previous studies on student perceptions have been performed. However, this study is original in the fact that it directly compares two different graduate student populations perspectives of online versus FTF during the pandemic.

As teachers are the gatekeepers in identification procedure, it is crucial to understand how teachers' openness and beliefs may affect the equitable identification. To be specific, we focused on how teachers' level of religious beliefs and ethical sensitivity impact notions of fairness in the identification of gifted students, particularly those from traditionally underrepresented groups. Study participants were 46 teachers who attended a Midwestern Catholic University in the U.S. Based on the results measuring teachers' religiosity, ethical sensitivity, and equitable identification index from vignettes, we found that there were no statistically significant score differences of religiosity and ethics level of teachers when they were divided into two groups, one showing equitable identification versus the other comparatively not. However, the majority of teachers (70%) fairly identified students regardless of their religiosity, ethical sensitivity, school experiences, confidence level serving gifted students, and current academic status when the vignettes had different students' race and family income status information.

This study aimed to describe the implementation of the spiritual leadership of the monks in Catholic schools. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative approach. The research design used a multi-site study conducted at three Catholic Junior High Schools in Malang, East Java, Indonesia. Results show that in developing spiritual leadership in Catholic schools, school principals are imbued with Christian leadership, namely servant leadership, discipleship leadership and pastoral leadership. The application of Christian leadership has a positive impact on the formation of the personalities of teachers and employees as well as strengthening the character of students.

This article explores the external environmental factors that affected organizational change at Joseph's University and Villanova University two private Catholic institutions in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania-resulting in differentiated market positions at each institution. Specifically, the role of demographic changes and the role of intercollegiate athletics was assessed.

This article examines the historical backdrop to the involvement of teaching Sisters in convent schooling for girls in India and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, since the late nineteenth century. It then explores how, as a consequence of a range of social changes, leadership in convent schools has changed in both countries, across the twentieth century. The Irish Sisters who founded and established these schools commenced "passing the baton" of convent school leadership to Indian and Pakistani women. The article draws on interviews to examine ways in which successive generations of women in the study refer to the legacy of the past, and the issue of women in education leadership.

In the Early Third Republic (c. 1880-1914), the role of Catholic educators was called into question by the convergence of two different calls for change within French society. As the government of the Third Republic sought to reform primary-school instruction, there were renewed debates in French society about the role of Catholic institutions. Cast as untrained and partisan teachers by advocates of Republican educational reform, Catholic teachers and pedagogues sought to assert their place among modern educators. A close reading of late nineteenth-century Catholic pedagogical materials reveals, however, that objections to Republican education came from its content and not its form. The education of the senses, the progression from known to unknown, and the introduction of children to abstract concepts were all pedagogical techniques that could be reconciled with Catholic educational practice. In response, advocates for the role of Catholicism in primary education stressed their role in shaping future citizens and sought to establish their credentials as educators. This case study, which focuses on French primary education, speaks to the growth in international pedagogical norms in the late nineteenth century and the dynamism of French Catholicism's attempts to reconcile tradition and modernity.

This paper explores and compares the experiences and perspectives of primary teachers regarding the teaching of religion in Catholic schools in Ireland and South Korea. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten teachers from each country. The findings highlight the contrasting perspectives of teachers from the two countries regarding the importance of and approach to religious education as a response to the challenges posed by pluralism. Teachers from Ireland predominantly exhibit a proactive approach, valuing diverse viewpoints and making efforts to engage in interreligious dialogue. Conversely, many teachers from South Korea demonstrate a deep appreciation for their own belief in God and prioritise the faith development of children. The comparative study highlights the importance of understanding teachers' experiences and the ways in which they navigate the intersection of religious diversity, national policies, Catholic ethos, and their own personal faith perspectives. Our findings demonstrate the central role of teachers' beliefs and future-oriented agency in the construction and implementation of religious education which does not always follow prescribed confessional or secular-neutral approaches.

Instructor and business students' perspectives regarding online and face-to-face education during the pandemic were simultaneously surveyed. The study took place at an AACSB-accredited, Jesuit Catholic University with a strong focus on face-to-face teaching. Instructors and students who have experienced online education significantly differ on their perspectives of online education with respect to difficulty. No significant differences in their perspectives existed on student-to-student interaction, student-to-instructor interaction or cheating as both groups favored the face-to-face environment. This research offers insight into the differences in perspectives of the educational environment, which may affect student learning.

Drawing on archival material and oral testimony of former students, this paper examines the lives and experiences of women in Catholic primary teacher training colleges in Ireland in the period 1922-1974. It commences with a brief overview of the historical context in which these colleges emerged, situating their development within the socio-political and cultural context of the emerging Free State and the changing primary school curriculum. Residential and single-sex, the paper argues that the colleges promoted a gendered ideology and culture of femininity which mirrored the conservative, nationalistic and ultramontane agenda of post-Independence Ireland. Paradoxically, while this often led to a limited, anti-intellectual experience and a hegemonic framing of women teachers' professionalism, many graduates used their new-found professional status as teachers to embrace high-profile leadership roles in twentieth-century Ireland, often in male-dominated fields.

We investigate the effects of private schools on reading and numeracy scores using rich population data. Conditional on lagged test scores and narrowly defined neighborhood indicators, Catholic and non-Christian faith private schools on average raise test scores by 0.18 standard deviation or more relative to the average public school, while non-Catholic Christian private schools have negligible effects. The effects of secular private "prep" schools are similar to those of Catholic schools, but selection bias is a greater concern in this case. We use school-specific estimates of effectiveness to investigate private school choice decisions and the determinants of private school effectiveness.
