Introduction Supracricoid laryngectomy (SCL CHEP) removes ∼ 70% of the larynx, resulting in structural rearrangement and modification of the swallowing mechanism, promoting chronic dysphagia. One of the consequences of this new physiology is the formation of pharyngeal residues that can increase the possibility of aspiration. The formation of residues after SCL CHEP, its functional consequences, and its influence on quality of life (QOL) is still poorly described in the literature. Objective To investigate and compare the association between self-reported QoL and objective assessments of swallowing function in patients undergoing SCL CHEP. Methods A cross-sectional study was performed from 2018 to 2020 in a reference service for head and neck surgery in Brazil. A total of 860 swallowing videofluoroscopy images were evaluated using the Penetration and Aspiration Scale (PAS) and Dynamic Imaging Grade of Swallowing Toxicity (DIGEST). The functional performance of swallowing according to the DIGEST scale was coherent with the QOL scores. It is suggested that the residue may be a more relevant aspect for QoL than the aspiration, making DIGEST a promising tool in the assessment of dysphagic patients.

Background: Estragole is an aromatic organic compound belonging to the class of phenylpropanoids derived from cinnamic aldehydes and present in essential oils of plant species, such asRavensara anisata (madeira), Ocimum basilicum (manjericão/alfavaca) and Croton zehntneri (canelinha). Pharmacological studies report its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and vasorelaxant activity. Hypothesis/Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the acute non-clinical toxicity, gastroprotective activity and the related mechanisms of action. Methods: Acute toxicity was assessed according to OECD guide 423 in mice. Ethanol, stress, piroxicam and pylorus ligation-induced gastric ulcer models were used to investigate antiulcer properties. The related mechanisms of action were using the ethanol-gastric lesions protocol. Results: In the acute oral toxicity assay, doses of 300 or 2000 mg/kg of estragole administered orally in Swiss mice did not induce any behavioral changes. However, the dose of 2000 mg/kg showed a decrease in water and feed intake. Lethal dose 50 % (LD50) was set to be equal to or greater than 2500 mg/kg, according to OECD. In all evaluated protocols, estragole (31.25, 62.5, 125 and 250 mg/kg) significantly reduced the area of ​​ulcerative lesion when compared to control groups. Objective To describe functional and quality of life results after extended supratracheal laryngectomy. Methods In the period from September 2009 to January 2018, 11 male subjects were submitted to extended supratracheal laryngectomy. Swallowing abilities were assessed through videofluoroscopy and the clinical scale Functional Communication Measures of Swallowing. The voices were classified by means of the perceptual-auditory analysis Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice. All subjects completed a self-assessment questionnaire for voice and swallowing. Results Aspiration was found in four patients and all presented stasis in different structures. All subjects in this study were exclusively orally fed and hydrated. In the evaluation of quality of life in swallowing, patients had mean >80 in all areas (83.47 mean of scores). The general degree and the presence of roughness were the highest means present in Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice (37.81 and 49.36, respectively). The mean of 33.36 (±22.56) had little impact on quality of life under the perspective of vocal aspects. Conclusion After supratracheal laryngectomy, swallowing was sufficiently restored and the quality of life was satisfactory. The voice presents severely impaired quality and preserved oral communication, with low impact on the activities of daily living. All individuals who maintained two cricoarytenoid units presented better functional results in swallowing and voice. RESUMO Objetivo Descrever os resultados funcionais e de qualidade de vida após a laringectomia supratraqueal alargada. Métodos No período de setembro de 2009 a janeiro de 2018, 11 indivíduos do sexo masculino foram submetidos à laringectomia supratraqueal alargada. As habilidades de deglutição foram avaliadas por meio da videofluoroscopia e da escala clínica Functional Communication Measures . As vozes foram classificadas por análise perceptivo-auditiva da Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice . Todos os voluntários preencheram um questionário de autoavaliação para voz e deglutição. Resultados A aspiração foi encontrada em quatro pacientes, e todos apresentaram estase em diferentes estruturas. Todos os sujeitos deste estudo apresentavam alimentação e hidratação exclusivas por via oral. Na avaliação da qualidade de vida na deglutição, os pacientes demonstraram médias >80 em todas as áreas (83,47 média dos escores). O grau geral e a presença de rugosidade foram os maiores escores médios na avaliação perceptivo-auditiva da voz (37,81 e 49,36 consecutivamente). A média de 33,36 (±22,56) demonstrou pouco impacto na qualidade de vida sob a perspectiva dos aspectos vocais. Conclusão Após a laringectomia supratraqueal, a deglutição foi suficientemente restaurada, e a qualidade de vida foi satisfatória. A voz apresenta qualidade gravemente comprometida com comunicação oral preservada, demonstrando baixo impacto nas atividades da vida diária. Na nova ordem econômica internacional que tornou as economias assimétricas impactando nas dinâmicas locais, ocasionando também uma interferência no processo de planejamento e gerenciamento da atividade turística. Neste sentido, este trabalho analisa como o processo de desenvolvimento da atividade turística, caracterizada pela forma de uso do território turístico por meio do seu gerenciamento, influencia na dinâmica e funcionamento de uma instância de governança em turismo. A pesquisa realizou coleta de dados do tipo documental, bibliográfica e entrevista com os membros do conselho estadual de turismo do Rio Grande do Norte (RN), cujos dados foram tratados com a técnica de análise de conteúdo, baseada no método dialético. Os principais resultados evidenciam que as características do processo de desenvolvimento da atividade turística no RN repercutem diretamente na instância de governança estadual evidenciado através da sua estrutura de funcionamento, da dinâmica, bem como das ações que são engendradas dentro do conselho. In the new international economic order that made the asymmetric economies impact on the local dynamics, causing also an interference in the process of planning and management of the tourist activity. In this sense, this work analyzes how the process of tourism development, characterized by the way tourism is used the territory through its management, influences the dynamics and functioning of a governance in tourism. The research carried out data collection of the documentary, bibliographic and interview with the members of the state tourism council of Rio Grande do Norte (RN), whose were treated with the technique of content analysis, based on the dialectical method. The main results show that the characteristics of the process of development of the tourist activity in the RN have a direct impact on the state governance body evidenced through its functioning structure, the dynamics, as well as the actions that are generated within the board.

Aging is a natural process that results in gradual and inevitable age-related changes. Besides triggering organic and functional wear and tear, it promotes changes in emotional, social, and cultural aspects.(,1) Normal aging is linked to the individual’s ability to adapt to the rigors and aggressions of the environment. Thus, each subject ages in their own way, depending on several variables, such as sex, origin, family environment, work, occupations, and experiences lived.(,1–3) For the World Health Organization (WHO), the age limit between the adult and the elderly is 65 years in developed nations and 60 years in emerging countries.(,4) Exposure to stress or smoking, lack of exercise, or inadequate nutrition are factors that contribute to determine the quality of the individual’s aging.(,2) Senescence and disease cannot be treated as closely dependent or interrelated factors, but it is possible to understand that the elderly person is more vulnerable when ill.(,3) Dysphagia is a dysfunction of swallowing, defined by the difficulty or inability to move effectively the food ingested from the mouth to the stomach. This disorder can affect up to 13% of population aged 65 and over, and 51% of institutionalized elderly individuals.(,5) Swallowing can be impacted by increased age, accumulation of comorbidities, and hospitalization. There are several diseases with the potential to trigger dysphagia, such as stroke, and head and neck tumors. In these groups, studies suggest that their prevalence increases with survival of individuals, which may mean that the changes in aging contribute to the aggravation of dysphagia.(,6,7) Supracricoid laryngectomy (SCL) is a partial horizontal surgical procedure indicated for T1b to T4a tumors of the glottic and supraglottic region, and its main advantages are partial preservation of laryngeal functions and absence of a permanent tracheostomy.(,8) Its technique consists of removing the pedicle from the epiglottis, thyroid cartilage, laryngeal ventricles, vocal folds, vestibular folds, and paraglottic space. One or both cricoarytenoid units, the epiglottis and the cricoid, remain. Its surgical reconstruction occurs, among variations, through the cricohyoidoepiglotopexy (CHEP), in which a suture is made between the cricoid cartilage, the epiglottis, and the hyoid bone, raising the laryngeal complex to the level of the hyoid bone.(,8,9) Supracricoid laryngectomy promotes changes in the biodynamics of swallowing due to the loss of important lower airway protection structures.(,10,11) Pharyngeal muscle atrophy has been identified as a natural biological process of aging, in which an increase in pharyngeal area and volume is observed in healthy individuals. It is known that healthy elderly people with larger pharyngeal cavities present with worsening of pharyngeal constriction and, consequently, more residues in pharyngeal recesses and vallecula.(,5) Natural aging promotes calcification of laryngeal cartilages, less muscle mobility, and weak healing/vascularization in the postoperative period, which is negatively related to surgical issues.(,7,9,11) It is believed that aging can enhance the negative oncological results of laryngectomies by different factors. This aspect can gradually compromise the swallowing process, due to the sum of the presbyphagia and the anatomophysiological rearrangement of the neoglottis.

O passar do tempo e o avanço das Tecnologias da Informação e Comunicação, tornaram a Web numa ferramenta essencial de trabalho e de lazer, tornando-a igualmente mais complexa. Para acompanhar este avanço tecnológico, as organizações começaram a criar e a implementar os seus sítios Web, de forma a permitir a transmissão de conhecimento acerca das mesmas, a qualquer hora e em qualquer lugar. Foi o que sucedeu nas Forças Armadas, com os três ramos, Marinha, Exército e Força Aérea, a criarem os seus sítios web. Neste âmbito, a concorrência de mercado na área de defesa nacional, é somente entre os três, fazendo com que os cidadãos sejam obrigados a usar aquele canal específico para conseguir interagir com os ramos. Devido a este fator, os três ramos devem assegurar que os seus sítios Web são acessíveis a qualquer utilizador, principalmente aos utilizadores com necessidades especiais, para que a sua interação seja de qualidade. Assim, esta dissertação investiga o estado atual dos sítios Web das Forças Armadas e tenta contribuir para o melhoramento dos mesmos, tanto ao nível da acessibilidade como da usabilidade. Para tal, na primeira fase da investigação foi realizado um estudo predominantemente teórico, no qual são abordados os diplomas e normativos importantes para investigação, tais como a legislação existente em Portugal sobre a Acessibilidade Web dos sítios Web da Administração Pública e, similarmente, a legislação relevante da União Europeia, bem como as normas existentes relativas a Usabilidade Web. Na segunda fase foi feito o levantamento da Acessibilidade Web, recorrendo à ferramenta AccessMonitor e, seguidamente, foi concebida uma verificação manual dos resultados obtidos na mesma. Imediatamente a seguir, foi feito o levantamento das heurísticas de usabilidade com problemas e, posteriormente, foram realizados os Testes de Usabilidade com o protocolo “Think Aloud” e aplicado um questionário aos participantes, tanto na versão desktop como na versão mobile, de forma a assegurar uma avaliação mais precisa da interação dos utilizadores em diferentes dispositivos. A partir dos resultados obtidos nas avaliações, foram identificados os erros mais graves e recorrentes e as faltas de conformidade nos três sítios Web, pelo que é apresentado um conjunto de recomendações de melhoria, bem como alguns exemplos de aplicação das mesmas. Após a análise, identificámos que os sítios Web das Forças Armadas não cumprem com os mínimos exigidos pela lei relativamente à Acessibilidade Web e que existem vários problemas graves de Usabilidade, influenciando, portanto, pela negativa toda a interação digital dos utilizadores com estas organizações. The progresses regarding Information and Communications Technologies have turned the web into an essential tool for work and leisure, making it also more complex. To follow this technological development, different organizations started to create and implement their web sites, to enable the transfer of knowledge about them, anytime and anywhere. This is what happened in the three branches of the Portuguese Armed Forces: Navy, Army, and Air Force when they created their web sites. As far as these organizations are concerned, the market competition is strictly among them, forcing citizens to use that specific channel to be able to interact with the branches. Due to this fact, the three branches must make sure that their web sites are available for all users, especially those with special needs so that this interaction can be of good quality. Therefore, this dissertation addresses the current state of the Armed Forces’ websites and aiming to contribute to their development. In order to do that, during the first stage of this research, a mainly theoretical study was conducted, in which legislative and normative matters were addressed, such as the existent legislation about the accessibility of Central Public Administration and Government Sites in Portugal and any relevant legislation in the European Union, as well as existing rules regarding web accessibility. During the second stage, the web accessibility was studied using the automatic tool AccessMonitor, and later, the results were manually checked. Immediately after that, defective heuristics were analyzed and usability tests with end users were conducted following the “ThinkAloud” protocol. A questionnaire was also applied, both in the desktop and mobile versions, to assure a better evaluation of user interaction in different devices. From the results obtained in these evaluations, the most serious and recurrent errors and non-conformities in the three websites were identified. A set of improvement recommendations is presented, as well as some possible examples of their implementations. After this analysis, we can say that the Armed Forces websites do not comply with the minimum standards required by law regarding web accessibility. There are also serious usability problems that negatively influence the interaction between the users and these organizations.

Introduction and aims: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become highly prevalent, paralleling the pandemic of obesity and diabetes, and represents an important burden. Nutrition knowledge is fundamental, in prevention, evolution and treatment of NAFLD. Association of low serum levels of vitamin D (VD) with several diseases, including NAFLD, has been emphasized in the last decade. We evaluated how serum levels of VD correlate with the presence of hepatic steatosis, and VD intake, in a random sample of the Portuguese adult population. Methods: Participants underwent a dietary intake inquiry, using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire representative of the usual intake over the previous year. Anthropometric measures, blood tests and ultrasound were done. Hepatic steatosis was quantified according to Hamaguchi's ultrasonographic score (steatosis defined by a score ≥ 2). Results: We recruited 789 adult individuals, 416 males (52.7%), mean age of 49.9 ± 17.0 years (18-79). Prevalence of hepatic steatosis was 35.5%, and after exclusion of excessive alcohol consumption, 28.0%. Mean VD serum levels were 26.0 ± 9.8 ng/ml and 68.4% participants had serum VD levels below 30 ng/ml. Mean serum levels of VD were not significantly different between participants with steatosis vs. no steatosis: 25.2±8.7 vs. 26.4±10.3 ng/ml, respectively (p=0.071). There was no correlation between VD serum levels and VD intake, measured by the FFQ, r=0.075 (p= 0.383). Conclusions: In spite of a high prevalence rate, there was no evidence that decreased VD serum levels were associated with hepatic steatosis. No significant correlation was found between VD dietary ingestion and VD serum levels. PurposeFamilial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an autosomal disorder of lipid metabolism presenting with increased cardiovascular risk. Although more than 1,700 variants have been associated with FH, the great majority have not been functionally proved to affect the low-density lipoprotein receptor cycle. We aimed to classify all described variants associated with FH and to establish the proportion of variants that lack evidence to support their pathogenicity.MethodsWe followed American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) guidelines for the classification, and collected information from a variety of databases and individual reports. A worldwide overview of publicly available FH variants was also performed.ResultsA total of 2,104 unique variants were identified as being associated with FH, but only 166 variants have been proven by complete in vitro functional studies to be causative of disease. Additionally, applying the ACMG guidelines, 1,097 variants were considered pathogenic or likely pathogenic. Only seven variants were found in all five continents.ConclusionThe lack of functional evidence for about 85% of all variants found in FH patients can compromise FH diagnosis and patient prognosis. ACMG classification improves variant interpretation, but functional studies are necessary to understand the effect of about 40% of all variants reported. Nevertheless, ACMG guidelines need to be adapted to FH for a better diagnosis.

Thermomagnetic motors are based on the effect of heat on magnetic properties of magnetic or magnetocaloric materials, which undergoes temperature and magnetic field cycles to produce mechanical power. This kind of motor has the potential to be used in the industry to recover low-grade heat, as energy harvesters. In this work, a model has been developed to simulate the time-dependent heat transfer processes in the heat exchanger coupled to the thermomagnetic phenomena. The heat exchanger is composed of prismatic segments of gadolinium magnetocaloric material with a circular channel, establishing an internal flow of working fluid. Gadolinium (Gd), which is usually adopted as reference material for magnetic cooling at room temperature, was considered as the working material because of the availability of properties data, and a mixture of water-glycol (20%) is used as working fluid. This way, the present paper investigated throughout numerical simulations the influences of the demagnetizing effects, magnetocaloric effect (MCE), heat exchanger geometric parameters (segmentation) and total weight of the heat exchanger on the performance of a linear thermomagnetic motor which the operating principle is based on the magnetic and gravitational forces balance (gravity return). Results for magnetic force, cycle period, and produced power are presented as a function of different operating conditions, such as flow rate and cold reservoir temperature, and design constraints. A maximum produced power of 0.3 W was found for a flow rate of 1.5 l/m and 20 working material bodies in the magnetic heat exchanger.

Septic arthritis is characterized by joint inflammation after a direct invasion of joint space by an infectious agent, and it is most frequently caused by bacteria. Salmonella septic arthritis is very rare in immunocompetent children, occurring almost exclusively in patients with a predisposing disease. The authors aim to alert to this condition by describing their experience in approaching an uncommon case of non-typhoidal Salmonella septic arthritis in an immunocompetent child, demonstrating its severity and increased risk of complications, requiring multiple therapeutic interventions and modification of antibiotic regimens.

A reserva alagoana, conhecida como Serrote da Laje, localizada no centro de Alagoas, no município de Craíbas, faz parte dos quatro distritos com mineralizações cupríferas do Brasil, o que caracteriza a possibilidade de crescimento e desenvolvimento territorial, mas também pode acarretar prejuízos e acentuar ainda mais as fragilidades na região. Logo a pesquisa tem como principal função de traçar um perfil social, econômico e ambiental usando indicadores para avaliação da vulnerabilidade das comunidades nas vizinhanças da Mineradora Vale Verde. Desse modo, é necessário determinar a vulnerabilidade das localidades e implementar indicadores de sustentabilidade nas regiões circunvizinhas, assim identificando as fragilidades das comunidades e as consequências advindas da instalação da mineradora sejam positivas ou negativas. Portanto é necessário criar um banco de dados no qual servirá para o uso futuro para identificar se a Mineradora Vale Verde está proporcionando um desenvolvimento saudável junto com as comunidades. Espera-se que essa pesquisa contribua para auxiliar na solução dessas fragilidades.

Background and aims: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an autosomal dominant disease of cholesterol metabolism that confers an increased risk of premature atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Therefore, early identification and treatment of these patients can improve prognosis and reduce the burden of cardiovascular mortality. The aim of this work was to perform the mutational analysis of the SAFEHEART (Spanish Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Cohort Study) registry. Methods: The study recruited 2938 individuals with genetic diagnosis of FH belonging to 775 families. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS v23. Results: A total of 194 variants have been detected in this study, 24 of them were never described before. About 88% of the patients have a pathogenic or likely pathogenic variant. Patients with null variants have a more severe phenotype than patients with defective variants, presenting with significantly higher levels of atherogenic particles (total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and apolipoprotein B). Conclusions: This study shows the molecular characteristics of the FH patients included in the SAFEHEART registry and the relationship with the phenotypic expression. The majority of the genetic variants are considered to be pathogenic or likely pathogenic, which confers a high level of confidence to the entry and follow-up data analysis performed with this registry concerning FH patients' prognosis, treatment and survival. Background and aim Recently, the European Association for the Study of the Liver – Chronic Liver Failure (CLIF) Consortium defined two new prognostic scores, according to the presence or absence of acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF): the CLIF Consortium ACLF score (CLIF-C ACLFs) and the CLIF-C Acute Decompensation score (CLIF-C ADs). We sought to compare their accuracy in predicting 30- and 90-day mortality with some of the existing models: Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP), Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD), MELD-Na, integrated MELD (iMELD), MELD to serum sodium ratio index (MESO), Refit MELD and Refit MELD-Na. Methods Retrospective cohort study that evaluated all admissions due to decompensated cirrhosis in 2 centers between 2011 and 2014. At admission each score was assessed, and the discrimination ability was compared by measuring the area under the ROC curve (AUROC). Results A total of 779 hospitalizations were evaluated. Two hundred and twenty-two patients met criteria for ACLF (25.9%). The 30- and 90-day mortality were respectively 17.7 and 37.3%. CLIF-C ACLFs presented an AUROC for predicting 30- and 90-day mortality of 0.684 (95% CI: 0.599–0.770) and 0.666 (95% CI: 0.588–0.744) respectively. No statistically significant differences were found when compared to traditional models. For patients without ACLF, CLIF-C ADs had an AUROC for predicting 30- and 90-day mortality of 0.689 (95% CI: 0.614–0.763) and 0.672 (95% CI: 0.624–0.720) respectively. When compared to other scores, it was only statistically superior to MELD for predicting 30-day mortality ( p = 0.0296). Conclusions The new CLIF-C scores were not statistically superior to the traditional models, with the exception of CLIF-C ADs for predicting 30-day mortality.

The advantages of using naturalistic virtual reality (VR) environments based on everyday life tasks for cognitive intervention in the elderly are not yet well understood. The literature suggests that the similarity of such exercises with real life activities may improve generalizability by extending the transfer of gains of training to everyday living. This study aimed to investigate the gains associated with this ecologically-oriented virtual reality cognitive stimulation (VR-CS) versus standard cognitive stimulation in the elderly. Forty-three healthy older adults were divided into two groups: an experimental group underwent a VR-based cognitive stimulation and an active control group underwent a paper-and-pencil cognitive stimulation. The outcomes assessed at the pre-treatment and posttreatment assessment consisted in well-established tests for cognitive and executive functioning, depression, subjective well-being, and functionality. The results showed positive outcomes on dimensions of general cognition, executive functioning, attention, and visual memory in the group that underwent VR-CS. Improvements in executive functioning in this group was supported by consistent evidence of increases in attention abilities but little evidence of increases in memory abilities. Both effects may have contributed to improvements in general cognition. Further studies are needed to test whether these effects may extend to well-being and functionality in cognitively impaired older adults.

Drug prescribing in older adults presents a serious challenge in medical clinical practice as this group of patients is particularly susceptible to drug-related side effects. American Geriatrics Society Beers Criteria serve as guidelines for clinicians to prevent potentially inappropriate prescribing in adults aged 65 years and older. Along with other tools and clinical judgment, these criteria can be used as a prescribing quality indicator. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of potentially inappropriate prescription and the most common potentially inappropriate medications prescribed among older patients at admission in an internal medicine ward, as well as its rate of discontinuation by clinicians by the time of discharge. This assessment was made in light of the American Geriatrics Society 2019 Updated AGS Beers Criteria. Data from three internal medicine wards of the University of Coimbra Hospital Center were analyzed during July 2019, resulting in a total of 153 selected patients. The mean age was 85 (SD 7.32) years and most of the patients were female (58%). On admission, 75% of patients had at least one potentially inappropriate drug prescribed. At discharge, the drug was discontinued in 21% of these patients. One potentially inappropriate drug was introduced in 16% of patients. More than ever, we must acknowledge deprescribing as an important component of a good prescribing continuum. Our results highlight clinicians’ poor recognition of potentially harmful drugs in the elderly and the urge to define a strategy that allows appropriate therapeutic adjustments in this age group.

En los últimos años, la comunidad ha reconocido a los consejos de políticas públicas como ámbitos esenciales y útiles para el debate sobre el desarrollo local y regional, pero el proceso sigue siendo frágil. Como tal, el presente artículo objetiva destacar los desafíos y las posibilidades de la participación social en las decisiones de política turística centradas en el Consejo de Turismo del Estado de Rio Grande do Norte (Conetur) en Brasil. Es un estudio cualitativo que recopiló datos documental es y bibliográficos, realizó entrevistas con miembros del consejo y realizó análisis de contenido. Los principales hallazgos revelan que las barreras para la participación social en las decisiones de política están directamente relacionadas con la historia de la gestión del turismo en Brasil y que estas pueden y deben aliviarse con dos soluciones propuestas aquí: reforzar las políticas democráticas y la autoestima de la sociedad. Podemos lograr esto mejorando los sistemas de gestión pública, que son parte d e un contexto democrático de políticas públicas actualmente desacreditado por ser costoso. In recent years, the community has recognized public policy councils as essential and useful arenas for debate regarding local and regional development, but the process remains tenuous. As such, the present article aimed to highlight the challenges and possibilities of social partic ipation in tourism policy decisions focusing on the State Tourism Council of Rio Grande do Norte (Conetur) in Brazil. It is a qualitative study that collected documental and bibliographic data, conducted interviews with council members and, performed content analysis. The main findings reveal that barriers to social participation in policy decisions are directly related to the history of tourism management in Brazil and that these can and should be relieved by two solutions proposed here: reinforcing democr atic policies and self-esteem. We can achieve this by improving public management systems, which are part of a democratic public policy context currently discredited for being expensive.

The topic of tourism governance in tourist destinations has been widely discussed in the literature and, although many benefits have been recognized, studies have shown that there are still structural gaps. Therefore, based on a conjunctural analysis of different factors identified in the literature, the objective of this paper is to discuss the main challenges of building governance capacity in tourist destinations. In order to understand how to preserve tourist destinations, understanding how to manage them, while also considering their weaknesses, is vital. To this end, this study used the ProKnow-C methodology, which involved a review of both domestic and international scientific journals that are rated between B1 and A1 by Capes. The study revealed that the main challenges to tourism governance can be divided into one of two categories: institutional and organizational. The former refers to issues related to the State, whereas the latter refers to the relationships among stakeholders who participate in tourism governance. Thus, we conclude that institutional and organizational challenges should be broken in favor of a conjunctural, not structural, reading of reality. Resumen La gobernanza turística en destinos turísticos ha sido un tema ampliamente debatido en la literatura y, a pesar de preconizar diversos beneficios, estudios realizados demuestran lagunas en su constitución y, por eso, este trabajo tiene como objetivo principal, discutir los principales desafíos para la construcción de la gobernanza turismo en destinos, a partir de un análisis coyuntural enfocado en los diferentes factores señalados en la literatura. En este prisma, se comprende que, en un contexto de búsqueda de sostenibilidad de los destinos turísticos, se hace necesario saber cómo gestionarlos, fundamentalmente a considerar sus fragilidades. Para ello, se utilizó la metodología ProKnow-C para recolección de datos, a través de investigación en periódicos científicos, tanto nacionales como internacionales, clasificados por la Capes en el ámbito de A1 a B1. Como principales los resultados, se constató que el estudio presentó que los desafíos básicos de la gobernanza en destinos turísticos se dividen en dos tipos, que son: institucionales y organizacionales. La primera se refiere a cuestiones asociadas al Estado y la segunda se refiere a la relación entre los actores participantes de la red de gobernanza en turismo. Se concluye, de esta forma, que los desafíos institucionales y organizacionales deben ser rotos, buscando una lectura coyuntural y no estructural de las realidades. Resumo A governança turística em destinos turísticos tem sido um tema amplamente debatido na literatura e apesar de preconizar diversos benefícios, estudos demonstram lacunas na sua constituição. Por isto, este trabalho tem como objetivo discutir os principais desafios para a construção da governança de destinos turísticos, a partir de uma análise conjuntural focada nos diferentes fatores sinalizados na literatura. Entende-se que em um contexto de busca de sustentabilidade dos destinos turísticos, faz-se necessário saber como geri-los, considerando suas fragilidades. Para tanto, utilizou-se a metodologia ProKnow-C, através de pesquisa em periódicos científicos tanto nacional como internacional, classificados pela Capes no escopo de A1 até B1. O estudo apresentou que os principais desafios da governança em destinos turísticos são divididos em dois tipos: institucionais e organizacionais. A primeira refere-se a questões associadas ao Estado e a segunda refere-se à relação entre os atores participantes da rede de governança em turismo. Conclui-se, desta forma, que os desafiosinstitucionais e organizacionais devem ser rompidos, visando uma leitura conjuntural e não estrutural das realidades.

Nísia Floresta foi a primeira escritora brasileira a dedicar-se aos estudos de gênero no Brasil. Ela publicou seu primeiro livro em 1832, supostamente realizando uma tradução livre de Vindication of the rights of woman (1790), de Mary Wollstonecraft, conforme apontam diversos artigos e livros sobre o assunto, inclusive o próprio livro que ela publicou. Essa informação foi posteriormente dada como errônea ao descobrir-se que ela realizou uma tradução de Woman not inferior to man (1738), de Sophia. Tendo essas questões em foco e por haver pouca literatura voltada às análises das questões de tradução envolvendo essa importante publicação, é que se justifica a realização desta pesquisa. Este trabalho teve como objetivo analisar, por meio das teorizações de análise do discurso de Norman Fairclough (2004) e de tradução de Christiane Nord (2016) a tradução de Nísia Floresta sob a ótica do movimento feminista. Como resultados, tentou-se encontrar justificativas para os fatos anteriormente citados, por meio de levantamento de hipóteses, acerca da publicação de Nísia Floresta, bem como contribuir com os estudos sobre feminismo no Brasil e pesquisas sobre a importância de Nísia Floresta para o referido movimento. Nísia Floresta was the first Brazilian writer to focus her studies on gender issues in Brazil. She published her first book in 1832, allegedly conducting a free translation of Mary Wollstonecraft\'s Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1790), as pointed out by several articles and books on the subject, including her own publication. This information was later given as erroneous when it showed that she performed a translation of Woman Not inferior to Man (1738), by Sophia. This research is justified by those issues as well as the few researches which analyze translation issues involving this important publication. This work aimed to analyze, through discourse analysis theories by Norman Fairclough (2004) and Christiane Nords (2016) translation theory, Nísia Florestas translation from the perspective of the feminist movement. As a result, justifications were proposed for those facts, by raising hypotheses about the publication of Nísia Floresta, as well as contributing to studies on feminism in Brazil and research on the importance of Nísia Floresta for this movement.

RESUMOPesquisadores de áreas como geologia e geografia têm se dedicado ao estudo do geoturismo e frequentemente ancoram os seus debates nos aspectos geológicos e geomorfológicos, ignorando a epistemologia do turismo. Ciente da pluralidade do debate, este trabalho tem como objetivo central propor um debate epistemológico sobre o conceito de geoturismo à luz das perspectivas teóricas do turismo. Para tal, recorreu-se à pesquisa bibliográfica para desvelar os aspectos históricos e o ponto de situação atual do turismo e do geoturismo. Apesar de o geoturismo ter surgido como esforço dos geólogos para transmitir o conhecimento sobre as ciências da terra que era de difícil acesso para o público leigo e a necessidade de sua incorporação no turismo devido aos efeitos multiplicadores, os principais resultados deste evidenciam que as origens do geoturismo só podem ser compreendidas à luz do turismo moderno, especialmente com a massificação da atividade turística na sociedade pós-industrial e o surgimento de formas alternativas ao turismo de massa e suas inúmeras segmentações.PALAVRAS-CHAVETurismo. ABSTRACTResearchers in areas such as geology and geography have been dedicated to the study of geotourism and often base their debates on geological and geomorphological aspects, ignoring the epistemology of tourism. Aware of the plurality of the debate, this paper aims to propose an epistemological debate on the concept of geotourism according to the theoretical perspectives of tourism. For this, bibliographical research was used to reveal the historical aspects and the current state of tourism and geotourism. Although geotourism has emerged as an effort by geologists to transmit knowledge about the earth sciences which was difficult to be accessed by the lay public and the need for its incorporation into tourism due to the multiplier effects, the main results of this paper show that the origins of geotourism can only be understood in light of modern tourism, especially with the massification of tourist activity in the post-industrial society and the emergence of alternative forms of mass tourism and its innumerable segmentations.KEYWORDSTourism. Mestrado em Gestão e Estratégia Industrial Encontramo-nos em plena quarta revolução industrial e praticamente todas as indústrias estão a adaptar-se a novas realidades e a novas formas de estar no mercado, cada vez mais influenciadas pelas chamadas startup tecnológicas. O setor financeiro não é exceção. Este setor necessita de recuperar a confiança dos consumidores e estar preparado para uma concorrência cada vez maior de plataformas de crédito digitais - Revolut, N26, entre outras plataformas de trading e de investimento, que impuseram uma disrupção na indústria financeira. Salientando, que em grande parte dos casos, os novos concorrentes das instituições financeiras portuguesas têm origem no exterior - tanto de países da União Europeia, como do resto do Mundo. Adicionalmente, os avanços tecnológicos, juntamente com casos de má gestão de instituições financeiras, levam a que os clientes bancários estejam cada vez mais preocupados com a aplicação das suas poupanças e procurem mais informação sobre o mercado e produtos disponíveis. Sendo também consequência do mais fácil acesso à informação, existindo uma maior comparação de serviços. Ao longo deste projeto será analisada a evolução do setor bancário português, incidindo na evolução do marketing no setor, no crescimento tecnológico e nas preocupações dos reguladores em potenciar a concorrência e inovação, bem como a equilibrar a confiança, segurança e riscos sistémicos. Por fim, serão analisadas as respostas de 266 inquiridos para sabermos se os portugueses estão ou não preparados para essa digitalização e redução da presença física no setor bancário. We are in the midst of the fourth industrial revolution and virtually, every industry is adapting to new realities and new ways of being in the market, increasingly influenced by so-called technology startups. The financial sector is no exception. This sector needs to regain consumer confidence and be prepared for increasing competition from digital credit platforms - Revolut, N26, among other trading and investment platforms that have disrupted the financial industry. Noting that, in most cases, the new competitors of Portuguese financial institutions originate from abroad - both from European Union countries and from the rest of the world. In addition, technological advances, coupled with cases of mismanagement of financial institutions, make bank customers increasingly concerned about applying their savings and seeking more information about the market and available products. As a result of easier access to information, there is a greater comparison of services. This project will analyze the evolution of the banking sector, focusing on Portugal, the evolution of marketing in the sector and the impact and concerns of regulators on enhancing competition and innovation, as well as balancing trust, security and systemic risks. A thermomagnetic motor operates due to magnetization variation of magnetic materials around their transition or Curie temperature. The main components of these motors are the magnetic material (MM) and the magnetic circuit (MC). If the MM presents the transition temperature around room temperature, it may have potential to be used in thermomagnetic motors. Based on the current state-of-the-art, several first- and second-order transition magnetic materials with Curie temperature of 20 °C and above are known, and some of them present high magnetocaloric effect. The MC is responsible to guarantee a high magnetic field region which magnetically interacts with the MM. This way, the main objective of the present paper is the design and assembly of a double-C permanent magnet magnetic circuit, as part of a novel thermomagnetic motor design. Several 2D and 3D simulations were performed using COMSOL Multiphysics V5.3, which is a finite element analysis software for multiphysics simulation. Based on the simulation results, the MC was designed and built. After the construction, simulation results for magnetic field intensity and profiles along the transversal and axial directions were compared with experimental measurements, and a good agreement was verified.

A inteligência emocional (IE) é uma área de estudo que recebe cada vez mais atenção devido ao reconhecimento do seu potencial promotor de adaptação e facilitador de bem-estar emocional e global do indivíduo, bem como de sucesso académico e profissional. Contudo, são ainda poucos os estudos de validação de instrumentos de avaliação da IE em contexto de Ensino Superior. O objetivo deste estudo foi adaptar e validar a Trait Meta-Mood Scale-24 (TMMS-24) junto de uma amostra de estudantes universitários portugueses. Para tal, foram examinadas as propriedades psicométricas do TMMS-24 junto de amostra de 682 estudantes (idades entre 18 e 58 anos, M = 20.33, DP = 2.88), matriculados no 1º ano (40.9%), 2º ano (32.8%), 3º ano (24.6%) e 4º ano (1.6%) de uma instituição de ES do Porto. A amostra foi dividida em duas subamostras, junto das quais foram exploradas as propriedades psicométricas (sensibilidade, fiabilidade e validade) da medida de avaliação da IE. Os resultados da análise fatorial exploratória e análise fatorial confirmatória corroboraram a estrutura de três fatores da escala original (Atenção, Clareza e Reparo das emoções). Além disso, essas dimensões apresentaram adequada consistência interna e correlacionados entre si na direção esperada. Os resultados mostraram evidências de validade convergente. A TMMS-24 apresenta-se assim como um recurso relevante para uma avaliação eficaz, rápida, prática e confiável do autorrelato da perceção da IE no contexto académico. Futuras investigações deverão procurar alargar a amostra, avaliar a estabilidade do constructo e verificar se o número de itens do TMMS-24 deverá ser reduzido. Emotional intelligence (EI) is an area of study that has received increasing attention due to the recognition of its potential for promoting adaptation and facilitating the individual's overall emotional well-being and well-being, as well as academic and professional success. However, there are still few studies validating instruments for the assessment of EI in higher education settings. The aim of this study was to adapt and validate the Trait Meta-Mood Scale-24 (TMMS-24) among a sample of Portuguese university students. To this end, the psychometric properties of the TMMS-24 were examined in a sample of 682 students (aged between 18 and 58 years, M = 20.33, SD = 2.88), enrolled in the 1st year (40.9%), 2nd year (32.8%), 3rd year (24.6%) and 4th year (1.6%) of an institution of higher education in Porto.The sample was divided into two sub-samples, in which the psychometric properties (sensitivity, reliability and validity) of the EI assessment measure were explored. The results of the exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis corroborated the structure of three factors of the original scale (Attention, Clarity and Emotion Repair). In addition, these dimensions showed adequate internal consistency and correlated with each other in the expected direction. The results showed evidence of convergent validity. The TMMS-24 is thus a relevant resource for an effective, rapid, practical and reliable assessment of the self-report of the perception of emotional intelligence in the academic context. Future investigations should seek to expand the sample, assess the stability of the construct and verify whether the number of items in the TMMS-24 should be reduced.

Clostridium difficile is the most prevalent pathogen among all healthcare-associated infections. This anaerobic bacterium can colonize the human gut, typically following agents that disrupt the normal gut microbiota, like antibiotics. In the gut, C. difficile is subjected to oxygen, which it has to eliminate for survival. Its genome encodes for two flavodiiron proteins, capable to reduce oxygen to water. Besides, some FDPs also reduce NO to N2O, an important feature as a resistance mechanism towards the human innate immune system [1,2]. Flavodiiron enzymes are constituted by a minimal core of two domains: a metallo-β-lactamase-like one, harboring the catalytic center, followed by a short-chain flavodoxin [1,2]. More complex FDPs exist, with multiple extra domains and redox centers [1,2]. C. difficile contains a ‘classical’ FDP, and a very complex one, with an extra short-type rubredoxin domain followed by an NADH:rubredoxin oxidoreductase-like one [3]. The biochemical, redox and spectroscopic studies demonstrated that this enzyme receives electrons directly from NADH, reducing its substrates, precluding the need for extra partners. This FDP is selective for O2 (16s-1), almost 10x higher than with NO. The reactivity towards hydrogen peroxide, as an H2O2 reductase with formation of water, with a non-negligible turnover (2s-1) is a novelty in the field of FDPs. The focal plane of the NIRSpec instrument on board the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is equipped with two Teledyne H2RG near-IR detectors, state-of-the-art HgCdTe sensors with excellent noise performance. Once JWST is in space, however, the noise level in NIRSpec exposures will be affected by the cosmic ray (CR) fluence at the JWST orbit and our ability to detect CR hits and to mitigate their effect. We have simulated the effect of CRs on NIRSpec detectors by injecting realistic CR events onto dark exposures that were recently acquired during the JWST cryo-vacuum test campaign undertaken at Johnson Space Flight Center. Here we present the method we have implemented to detect the hits in the exposure integration cubes, to reject the affected data points within our ramp-to-slope processing pipeline (the prototype of the NIRSpec official pipeline), and assess the performance of this method for different choices of the algorithm parameters. Using the optimal parameter set to reject CR hits from the data, we estimate that, for an exposure length of 1,000 s, the presence of CRs in space will lead to an increase of typically ~7% in the detector noise level with respect to the on-ground performance, and the corresponding decrease in the limiting sensitivity of the instrument, for the medium and high-spectral resolution modes., Accepted by Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific - 25 pages, 12 figures

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura, com a especialização em Interiores e Reabilitação do Edificado apresentada na Faculdade de Arquitetura da Universidade de Lisboa para obtenção do grau de Mestre. A diversidade formal dos edifícios, na região de Sintra, apesar do seu ecletismo enraizado, apresenta uma coerência arquitetónica, acabando por adaptar os edifícios e linguagens arquitetónicas de diferentes épocas. A tipologia do edificado do concelho, de malha urbana de traçado orgânico, distingue-se em três categorias: habitacional, comercial e cultural, tendo a freguesia de Colares (concelho de Sintra) como principal característica urbana e tipológica a casa unifamiliar. A Praia Grande, conhecida pelo seu extenso areal e pela prática de desportos ao ar livre, é um local muito acedido pelos turistas. Neste contexto, surge o presente trabalho cujo objeto de estudo é o antigo Parque de Campismo da Praia Grande que se encontra degradado e abandonado há mais de uma década. No entanto, é urgente a concretização deste parque de campismo face à ausência de outro equipamento desta natureza. Este trabalho formaliza um plano de intervenção a nível arquitetónico e urbano que sugere a revitalização do espaço e a reabilitação do conceito de parque de campismo, como projeto de habitação temporária. Com esta intervenção, procura-se criar um equipamento sustentável e bem ordenado que estabeleça o equilíbrio com a paisagem, com o território, com a economia, com a sociedade e com a cultura. ABSTRACT: The formal diversity of buildings, in the Sintra region, despite its rooted eclecticism, presents an architectural coherence, eventually adapting to the architectural buildings and languages of the different eras. The typology of the building of the county, with an urban layout, distinguishes three classes: housing, commercial and cultural, with a parish of municipalities (municipality of Sintra) as the main urban and typological characteristic of a single-family house. Praia Grande, known for its extensive sand and outdoor sports, is a popular place for tourists. In this context, the present study is the object of study is the former Campsite of Praia Grande that has been degraded and abandoned for more than a decade. However, this campsite is urgently needed in the absence of other such equipment. This work formalizes a plan of intervention at an architectural and urban level that suggests the revitalization of space and the rehabilitation of the concept of camping, as a temporary housing project. This intervention seeks to create a sustainable and well-ordered equipment that establishes the balance with the landscape, the territory, the economy, the society and the culture. N/A

Thermomagnetic motors are based on the effect of heat on the magnetic properties of ferromagnetic materials around their magnetic phase transition (Curie) temperature. The main components of these motors are the magnetic material and the magnetic circuit. Changing the magnetic ordering by heating or cooling the magnetic material it is possible to generate power when the magnetic material interacts with an external magnetic field source. If the magnetic material temperature transition is around room temperature, it may have potential to be applied in thermomagnetic motors using low-grade thermal waste as heat source. In this way, the present work proposes a novel concept of a linear thermomagnetic motor using a double-C shape permanent magnet magnetic circuit to convert thermal energy into mechanical energy. The double-C magnetic circuit has two high field regions able to host, at least, two magnetic material heat exchangers connected to each other, but operating in opposite magnetic phases: if the first material heat exchanger is at a non-magnetic phase, the second is ferromagnetic. Thus, when the force equilibrium of such configuration is not satisfied, a linear motion is created. An experimental apparatus of the proposed concept was designed and built. Gadolinium spheres were used as magnetic material. Experimental tests for static forces and generated power were performed. Preliminary results presented a maximum generated power of 0.41 W at an operating frequency of 0.5 Hz.

This contribution aims to present an ensemble of material of Roman Republican chronology exhumed in the necropolis of Olival do Senhor dos Mártires (Alcácer do Sal, Portugal). In order to assess the importance of this period in the overall phasing of the site, this ensemble – comprising black gloss pottery, amphorae, unguentaria and a terracotta figurine – is studied from a chronological, typological and functional point of view. The resulting framework of reference allows to propose that this area was probably continually used as a burial ground throughout the Republican period (mid-2nd to late 1st centuries BCE), thus putting the apparent hiatus between the Late Iron Age and the Imperial phases of the necropolis in perspective., La presente contribución pretende presentar un conjunto de materiales de cronología romana republicana exhumado en la necrópolis del Olival do Senhor dos Mártires (Alcácer do Sal, Portugal). De cara a evaluar la importancia de este período en la secuencia del yacimiento, dicho conjunto, que incluye cerámicas de barniz negro, ánforas, ungüentarios y una terracota, fue objeto de una valoración cronológica, tipológica y funcional. El cuadro de referencia resultante permite proponer que esta área probablemente conoció una utilización funeraria continuada durante el período republicano (mediados del siglo II a finales del I a.n.e.), lo que permite cuestionar el aparente hiato entre la fase de la II Edad del Hierro y la romana imperial.

Lipidomics has been proving that membrane lipids play a crucial role in several cell functions and are involved in several pathologies, including cancer. In fact, beyond a scaffold where proteins and other components are embedded, the cell membrane can also act as a barrier or a target for anticancer drugs. From this point of view, the development of new chemotherapeutic agents should also take into account the role of the membrane in their activity. This Review aims to highlight the importance of anticancer drug-membrane interactions as a powerful strategy to improve cancer therapy. Biophysical techniques emerge, therefore, as essential tools to unveil such interactions.

No intuito de colaborar com as discussões acadêmicas para a teorização do turismo, analisaram-se as principais influências e contribuições para a teoria do turismo feitas pelo autor Dr. John Tribe, pesquisador do turismo que já publicou diversos livros e artigos indexados na área. Além disso, Tribe é autor de um modelo de criação do conhecimento em turismo amplamente difundido na Europa e demais continentes do mundo. Desta forma, a investigação se caracteriza como qualitativa, utilizando o procedimento descritivo-exploratório por meio das seguintes técnicas: pesquisa bibliográfica, eletrônica e entrevista aprofundada. O conteúdo advindo da coleta de dados foi interpretado a partir da análise de conteúdo. Entende-se que, embora sejam sugeridos aperfeiçoamentos à teoria do Dr. John Tribe por diversos autores da área, especialmente visando corrigir certas limitações no seu modelo de produção do conhecimento em turismo, a obra de Tribe mantém-se como referência fundamental em epistemologia e educação em turismo.
