Upcoming experiments will map the spatial distribution of the 21-cm signal over three-dimensional volumes of space during the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). Several methods have been proposed to mitigate the issue of astrophysical foreground contamination in tomographic images of the 21-cm signal, one of which involves the excision of a wedge-shaped region in cylindrical Fourier space. While this removes the $k$-modes most readily contaminated by foregrounds, the concurrent removal of cosmological information located within the wedge considerably distorts the structure of 21-cm images. In this study, we build upon a U-Net based deep learning algorithm to reconstruct foreground wedge-removed maps of the 21-cm signal, newly incorporating light-cone effects. Adopting the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) as our fiducial instrument, we highlight that our U-Net recovery framework retains a reasonable level of reliability even in the face of instrumental limitations and noise. We subsequently evaluate the efficacy of recovered maps in guiding high-redshift galaxy searches and providing context to existing galaxy catalogues. This will allow for studies of how the high-redshift galaxy luminosity function varies across environments, and ultimately refine our understanding of the connection between the ionization state of the intergalactic medium (IGM) and galaxies during the EoR., Comment: v2: replaced with accepted MNRAS version (extra clarifying remarks and some demonstration of out-of-distribution performance). We derive oxygen abundances for two samples of Seyfert 2 (Sy2) active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected from the KPNO International Spectroscopic Survey (KISS). The two samples from KISS include 17 intermediate-redshift (0.29 < z < 0.42) Sy2s detected via their [O III] lines, and 35 low-redshift (z < 0.1), Halpha-detected Sy2s. The primary goal of this work is to explore whether the metallicity distribution of these two samples changes with redshift. To determine the oxygen abundances of the KISS galaxies, we use Cloudy to create a large number of photoionization model grids by varying the temperature of the accretion disk, the ratio of X-ray to UV continuum light, the ionization parameter, the hydrogen density, and the metallicity of the narrow-line region clouds. We link the results of these models to the observed [O III]/H-beta and [N II]/H-alpha emission-line ratios of the KISS sample on the BPT diagram, interpolating across the model grids to derive metallicity. The two redshift samples overlap substantially in terms of derived metal abundances, but we find that some of the intermediate-redshift Sy2 galaxies possess lower abundances than their local universe counterparts. Our analysis provides evidence for modest levels of chemical evolution (0.18 +/- 0.06 dex) over 3-4 Gyrs of look-back time. The Star Formation Across Cosmic Time (SFACT) survey is a new narrowband survey designed to detect emission-line galaxies (ELGs) and quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) over a wide range of redshifts in discrete redshift windows. The survey utilizes the WIYN 3.5m telescope and the Hydra multifiber positioner to perform efficient follow-up spectroscopy on galaxies identified in the imaging part of the survey. Since the objects in the SFACT survey are selected by their strong emission lines, it is possible to obtain useful spectra for even the faintest of our sources (r ~ 25). Here we present the 453 objects that have spectroscopic data from the three SFACT pilot-study fields, 415 of which are confirmed ELGs. The methodology for processing and measuring these data is outlined in this paper and example spectra are displayed for each of the three primary emission lines used to detect objects in the survey (H-alpha, [O III]5007, and [O II]3727). Spectra of additional QSOs and non-primary emission-line detections are also shown as examples. The redshift distribution of the pilot-study sample is examined and the ELGs are placed in different emission-line diagnostic diagrams in order to distinguish the star-forming galaxies from the active galactic nuclei., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures. Star Formation Across Cosmic Time (SFACT) is a new narrowband survey designed to detect faint emission-line galaxies and QSOs over a broad range of redshifts. Here we present the first list of SFACT candidates from our pilot-study fields. Using the WIYN 3.5m telescope, we are able to achieve good image quality with excellent depth and routinely detect ELGs to r = 25.0. The limiting line flux of the survey is ~1.0 x 10^16 erg/s/cm^2. SFACT targets three primary emission lines: H-alpha, [O III]5007, and [O II]3727. The corresponding redshift windows allow for the detection of objects at z ~ 0-1. With a coverage of 1.50 square degrees in our three pilot-study fields, a total of 533 SFACT candidates have been detected (355 candidates per square degree). We detail the process by which these candidates are selected in an efficient and primarily automated manner, then tabulate accurate coordinates, broadband photometry, and narrowband fluxes for each source., Comment: 26 pages, 12 figures. We introduce the Star Formation Across Cosmic Time (SFACT) survey. SFACT is a new narrow-band survey for emission-line galaxies (ELGs) and QSOs being carried out using the wide-field imager on the WIYN 3.5 m telescope. Because of the superior depth and excellent image quality afforded by WIYN, we routinely detect ELGs to r = 25.0. Our survey observations are made using three custom narrow-band filters centered on 6590 A, 6950 A, and 7460 A. Due to the sensitivity of the survey, we are able to simultaneously detect sources via a number of different emission lines over a wide range of redshifts. The principal lines detected in SFACT are H-alpha (redshifts up to 0.144), [O III]5007 (redshifts up to 0.500) and [O II]3727 (redshifts up to 1.015). In this paper we detail the properties of the survey as well as present initial results obtained by analyzing our three pilot-study fields. These fields have yielded a total of 533 ELG candidates in an area of 1.50 square degrees (surface density of 355 ELGs per square degree). Follow-up spectra for a subset of the ELG candidates are also presented. One of the key attributes of the SFACT survey is that the ELGs are detected in discrete redshift windows that will allow us to robustly quantify the properties of the star-forming and AGN populations as a function of redshift to z = 1 and beyond. The planned acquisition of additional narrow-band filters will allow us to expand our survey to substantially higher redshifts., Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures. CI Tau is currently the only T Tauri star with an inner protoplanetary disk that hosts a planet, CI Tau b, that has been detected by a radial velocity survey. This provides the unique opportunity to study disk features that were imprinted by that planet. We present multi-epoch spectroscopic data, taken with NASA IRTF in 2022, of the ${}^{12}$CO and hydrogen Pf$\beta$ line emissions spanning 9 consecutive nights, which is the proposed orbital period of CI Tau b. We find that the star's accretion rate varied according to that 9~d period, indicative of companion driven accretion. Analysis of the ${}^{12}$CO emission lines reveals that the disk can be described with an inner and outer component spanning orbital radii 0.05-0.13~au and 0.15-1.5~au, respectively. Both components have eccentricities of about 0.05 and arguments of periapses that are oppositely aligned. We present a proof-of-concept hydrodynamic simulation that shows a massive companion on a similarly eccentric orbit can recreate a similar disk structure. Our results allude to such a companion being located around an orbital distance of 0.14~au. However, this planet's orbital parameters may be inconsistent with those of CI Tau b whose high eccentricity is likely not compatible with the low disk eccentricities inferred by our model., Comment: Accepted to AJ

Advances in material design has led to the rapid development of novel materials with increasing complexity and functions in bioengineering. In particular, functionally graded materials (FGMs) offer important advantages in various fields of application. In this work, we consider a heterogeneous reaction-diffusion model for an FGM spherical drug releasing system that generalizes the multi-layer configuration to arbitrary spatially-variable coefficients. Our model proposes a possible form for the drug diffusivity and reaction rate functions exhibiting fixed average material properties and a drug release profile that can be continuously varied between the limiting cases of a homogeneous system (constant coefficients) and two-layer system (stepwise coefficients). A hybrid analytical-numerical solution is then used to solve the model, which provides closed-form expressions for the drug concentration and drug release profiles in terms of generalized Fourier series. The resulting concentration and mass profiles show how the release rate can be controlled and continuously varied between a fast (homogeneous) and slow (two-layer) release., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, submitted

Recent work in the field of symbolic music generation has shown value in using a tokenization based on the GuitarPro format, a symbolic representation supporting guitar expressive attributes, as an input and output representation. We extend this work by fine-tuning a pre-trained Transformer model on ProgGP, a custom dataset of 173 progressive metal songs, for the purposes of creating compositions from that genre through a human-AI partnership. Our model is able to generate multiple guitar, bass guitar, drums, piano and orchestral parts. We examine the validity of the generated music using a mixed methods approach by combining quantitative analyses following a computational musicology paradigm and qualitative analyses following a practice-based research paradigm. Finally, we demonstrate the value of the model by using it as a tool to create a progressive metal song, fully produced and mixed by a human metal producer based on AI-generated music., Comment: Pre-print accepted for publication at CMMR2023

GuitarPro format tablatures are a type of digital music notation that encapsulates information about guitar playing techniques and fingerings. We introduce ShredGP, a GuitarPro tablature generative Transformer-based model conditioned to imitate the style of four distinct iconic electric guitarists. In order to assess the idiosyncrasies of each guitar player, we adopt a computational musicology methodology by analysing features computed from the tokens yielded by the DadaGP encoding scheme. Statistical analyses of the features evidence significant differences between the four guitarists. We trained two variants of the ShredGP model, one using a multi-instrument corpus, the other using solo guitar data. We present a BERT-based model for guitar player classification and use it to evaluate the generated examples. Overall, results from the classifier show that ShredGP is able to generate content congruent with the style of the targeted guitar player. Lyman-alpha line profiles are a powerful probe of ISM structure, outflow speed, and Lyman continuum escape fraction. In this paper, we present the Ly$\alpha$ line profiles of the COS Legacy Archive Spectroscopic SurveY, a sample rich in spectroscopic analogs of reionization-era galaxies. A large fraction of the spectra show a complex profile, consisting of a double-peaked Ly$\alpha$ emission profile in the bottom of a damped, Ly$\alpha$ absorption trough. Such profiles reveal an inhomogeneous interstellar medium (ISM). We successfully fit the damped Ly$\alpha$ absorption (DLA) and the Ly$\alpha$ emission profiles separately, but with complementary covering factors, a surprising result because this approach requires no Ly$\alpha$ exchange between high-$N_\mathrm{HI}$ and low-$N_\mathrm{HI}$ paths. The combined distribution of column densities is qualitatively similar to the bimodal distributions observed in numerical simulations. We find an inverse relation between Ly$\alpha$ peak separation and the [O III]/[O II] flux ratio, confirming that the covering fraction of Lyman-continuum-thin sightlines increases as the Ly$\alpha$ peak separation decreases. We combine measurements of Ly$\alpha$ peak separation and Ly$\alpha$ red peak asymmetry in a diagnostic diagram which identifies six Lyman continuum leakers in the CLASSY sample. We find a strong correlation between the Ly$\alpha$ trough velocity and the outflow velocity measured from interstellar absorption lines. We argue that greater vignetting of the blueshifted Ly$\alpha$ peak, relative to the redshifted peak, is the source of the well-known discrepancy between shell-model parameters and directly measured outflow properties. Previous analyses of mid-infrared water spectra from young protoplanetary disks observed with the Spitzer-IRS found an anti-correlation between water luminosity and the millimeter dust disk radius observed with ALMA. This trend was suggested to be evidence for a fundamental process of inner disk water enrichment, used to explain properties of the Solar System 40 years ago, in which icy pebbles drift inward from the outer disk and sublimate after crossing the snowline. Previous analyses of IRS water spectra, however, were uncertain due to the low spectral resolution that blended lines together. We present new JWST-MIRI spectra of four disks, two compact and two large with multiple radial gaps, selected to test the scenario that water vapor inside the snowline is regulated by pebble drift. The higher spectral resolving power of MIRI-MRS now yields water spectra that separate individual lines, tracing upper level energies from 900 K to 10,000 K. These spectra clearly reveal excess emission in the low-energy lines in compact disks, compared to the large disks, demonstrating an enhanced cool component with $T \approx$ 170-400 K and equivalent emitting radius $R_{\rm{eq}}\approx$ 1-10 au. We interpret the cool water emission as ice sublimation and vapor diffusion near the snowline, suggesting that there is indeed a higher inwards mass flux of icy pebbles in compact disks. The Astro2020 Decadal Survey has identified the mapping of the circumgalactic medium (CGM, gaseous plasma around galaxies) as a key objective. We explore the prospects for characterizing the CGM in and around nearby galaxy halos with a future, large grasp X-ray microcalorimeter. We create realistic mock observations from hydrodynamical simulations (EAGLE, IllustrisTNG, and Simba) that demonstrate a wide range of potential measurements, which will address the open questions in galaxy formation and evolution. By including all background and foreground components in our mock observations, we show why it is impossible to perform these measurements with current instruments, such as X-ray CCDs, and only microcalorimeters will allow us to distinguish the faint CGM emission from the bright Milky Way (MW) foreground emission lines. We find that individual halos of MW mass can, on average and depending on star formation rate, be traced out to large radii, around R500, and for larger galaxies even out to R200, using prominent emission lines, such as OVII, or OVIII. Furthermore, we show that emission line ratios for individual halos can reveal the radial temperature structure. Substructure measurements show that it will be possible to relate azimuthal variations to the feedback mode of the galaxy. We demonstrate the ability to construct temperature, velocity, and abundance ratio maps from spectral fitting for individual galaxy halos, which reveal rotation features, AGN outbursts, and enrichment., Comment: 41 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Electronic ferroelectricity represents a new paradigm where spontaneous symmetry breaking driven by electronic correlations, in contrast to traditional lattice-driven ferroelectricity, leads to the formation of electric dipoles. Despite the potential application advantages arising from its electronic nature, switchable electronic ferroelectricity remains exceedingly rare. Here, we report the discovery of an electronic ratchet effect that manifests itself as switchable electronic ferroelectricity in a layer-contrasting graphene-boron nitride moir\'e heterostructure. Our engineered layer-asymmetric moir\'e potential landscapes result in layer-polarized localized and itinerant electronic subsystems. At particular fillings of the localized subsystem, we find a ratcheting injection of itinerant carriers in a non-volatile manner, leading to a highly unusual ferroelectric response. Strikingly, the remnant polarization can be stabilized at multiple (quasi-continuous) states with behavior markedly distinct from known ferroelectrics. Our experimental observations, simulations, and theoretical analysis suggest that dipolar excitons are the driving force and elementary ferroelectric units in our system. This signifies a new type of electronic ferroelectricity where the formation of dipolar excitons with aligned moments generates a macroscopic polarization and leads to an electronically-driven ferroelectric response, which we term excitonic ferroelectricity. Such new ferroelectrics, driven by quantum objects like dipolar excitons, could pave the way to innovative quantum analog memory and synaptic devices.

We review numerous arguments for primordial black holes (PBHs) based on observational evidence from a variety of lensing, dynamical, accretion and gravitational-wave effects. This represents a shift from the usual emphasis on PBH constraints and provides what we term a positivist perspective. Microlensing observations of stars and quasars suggest that PBHs of around $1\,M_{\odot}$ could provide much of the dark matter in galactic halos, this being allowed by the Large Magellanic Cloud microlensing observations if the PBHs have an extended mass function. More generally, providing the mass and dark matter fraction of the PBHs is large enough, the associated Poisson fluctuations could generate the first bound objects at a much earlier epoch than in the standard cosmological scenario. This simultaneously explains the recent detection of high-redshift dwarf galaxies, puzzling correlations of the source-subtracted infrared and X-ray cosmic backgrounds, the size and the mass-to-light ratios of ultra-faint-dwarf galaxies, the dynamical heating of the Galactic disk, and the binary coalescences observed by LIGO/Virgo/KAGRA in a mass range not usually associated with stellar remnants. Even if PBHs provide only a small fraction of the dark matter, they could explain various other observational conundra, and sufficiently large ones could seed the supermassive black holes in galactic nuclei or even early galaxies themselves. We argue that PBHs would naturally have formed around the electroweak, quantum chromodynamics and electron-positron annihilation epochs, when the sound-speed inevitably dips. This leads to an extended PBH mass function with a number of distinct bumps, the most prominent one being at around $1\,M_{\odot}$, and this would allow PBHs to explain many of the observations in a unified way., Comment: 117 pages, 40 figures, 2 tables, 451 references; invited review for Physics Reports; replacement to match published version

Prior research has found that financial investments in North Carolina's early childhood education programs--Smart Start and NC Pre-K--generated positive effects on student achievement in reading and mathematics through eighth grade (Bai et al., 2020). The current study examined if these effects were moderated by two dimensions of educational opportunity in NC public school districts, as measured by (1) the average academic achievement level in third grade and (2) the rate of growth in academic achievement from third to eighth grade. The Smart Start effect on eighth grade reading achievement was larger in school districts with higher levels of average achievement. Also, the NC Pre-K effect on eighth grade reading achievement was smaller in school districts with higher rates of achievement growth.

Assets for a Healthy Adolescence - Experiential Prevention (AHA-EOSL) Program, provided by Rocky Mountain Youth Corps-CO (RMYC), engaged 165 youth during summer 2021 in Community Youth Crews (ages 14-15) or Regional Youth Crews (ages 16-18). Participants in both programs lived, camped (24/7), and worked together in 8-10 member crews for two or five weeks and performed meaningful conservation and service projects for public benefit six to eight hours per day. Evenings and weekends were spent doing daily living chores, AHA-EOSL Education Curriculum, outdoor recreation, and life skills development. All members were paid, and those 17 or older may have received AmeriCorps education awards. The program's purpose was to provide deep, immersive, and experiential absorption of life skills to ensure a healthy transition into adulthood. RMYC program developers focused on eight factors they believed would be positively enhanced by program participation, along with reductions in alcohol and marijuana use: 1. Planning and Decision Making, 2. Interpersonal Skills, 3. Peer/Social Support, 4. Resiliency, 5. Enhanced Self-Efficacy, 6. Leadership, 7. Civic Engagement, and 8. Alcohol and Drug Expectations. Evaluation data were collected online using Entrance and Exit Surveys. With the exception of Alcohol and Drug Expectations, all seven other prevention factors showed effect size differences pre/post of 0.25 or greater, which indicates strong program outcomes. Additionally, while upon entrance more than 85% of the participants reported no use of either alcohol or marijuana in the past 30 days, at exit, among those who did report use greater than 70% reported reduced use. Measuring educational opportunity is a topic of interest to policymakers and education stakeholders alike. Standardized assessments of student achievement are commonly used to measure educational opportunity in North Carolina and across the nation. This research brief examines two measures of educational opportunity in North Carolina public school districts. Both measures are based on standardized assessments of student achievement. The first measure--"average achievement"--indexes the average level of student achievement at a single point in time. The second measure-"achievement growth"--indexes the rate of growth in student achievement over time. The findings and policy implications are discussed, followed by a technical appendix to further describe the data and analyses.
