This lesson guide is designed to help U.S. history teachers and students in grades 8-11 examine historic events through basic economic reasoning. Each lesson contains detailed teaching procedures, which typically begin with a statement of purpose and include discussion questions, activities, anticipated responses, and answers to questions posed in the activities. Each lesson culminates with a closure activity that reviews learning, provides a lesson summary, or invites additional applications. The program is designed for supplemental use with a secondary U.S. history textbook and is intended to integrate the study of history and economics. This teaching unit represents a specific "dramatic moment" in history that can allow students to delve into the deeper meanings of selected landmark events and explore their wider context in the great historical narrative. Studying a crucial turning point in history helps students realize that history is an ongoing, open-ended process, and that the decisions made today create the conditions of tomorrow's history. The teaching unit is based on primary sources taken from government documents, artifacts, magazines, newspapers, films, and literature from the period under study. The historical narrative of the Industrial Revolution, which swept through the world between 1850-1914, is presented in this unit. The unit offers an alternative to the traditional textbook approach that typically focuses on the English Industrial Revolution and its spread to the continent. The unit contains the following sections: (1) unit objectives; (2) correlation to the National Standards for History; (3) teacher manual; (4) student manual; and (5) profiles. Lessons in the unit are recommended for grades 9-12, but can be adapted for other grade levels. The lesson plans include a variety of ideas and approaches for the teacher to lengthen or shorten as the need arises. The unit's simulation exercise raises questions concerning unpredictable consequences of historical phenomena. The simulation provides a series of biographies that reflect the interaction among peoples and describe the resultant winners and losers in this new global environment. (BT)

The tenth grade unit of the FICSS series (Focus on Inner City Social Studies -- see SO 008 271) deals with the political-economic systems in the United States. The first unit of the sequence focuses specifically on capitalism in a democracy. The document deals with both the theoretical and practical aspects of capitalism. The theoretical section examines the fundamentals of the political and economic systems; the practical examines the extent to which the theory is realized in practice. It is intended that pupils will ask questions concerning the what, how much, and for whom of production; who makes and enforces the rules; and how rules may be modified. From the learning activities, students become aware of the money system, the involvement of politics in capitalism, and specific areas of economics such as commodities, competition, Gross National Product, and government spending. The content of the unit includes a general introduction to the program and to the unit; essential source materials; knowledge, skill, and behavioral objectives; learning activities; and supplementary teacher and student resources. "The Yummy Pizza Company" is an interdisciplinary thematic unit that introduces the world of work to elementary school age students. The 10 lesson outlines can be adapted up or down to be used in grades 1-5 because an attempt has been made to keep required reading and writing assignments to a minimum. Optional assignments may be added for more proficient readers. The suggested time frame is for the 10 lessons of 1 to 2 hours each to be completed in 2 weeks. For those using a thematic approach, the lessons can be expanded to cover a whole day through tie-ins to other curriculum areas. (RJC)
