Low-temperature plasma has been studied for the textile industry as an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional finishing treatments but its biomedical applications are limited. The present work is devoted to analyze how plasma treatment modifies the wetting properties of polypropylene and polyamide 6.6 fabrics and its influence on the drug release from these textile materials. Drug release studies from textiles pre-treated by plasma are unexplored and constitute an innovative research that could provide a new way to develop controlled drug delivery systems. Methods of surface analysis for polypropylene and polyamide 6.6, including contact angle measurements, drop test, SEM, as well as drug release studies, using ketoprofen as a model drug, are considered in this research. Results obtained have shown that the increase of the hydrophilic properties of polypropylene and polyamide fabrics with plasma treatment reverts in a higher release of the model drug studied from plasma-treated fabrics. This work reports on the results of investigations conducted with three layered polypropylene (PP) membranes which were exposed to a N2 flowing microwave (100 W) post discharge, at several flow rates (0.03–1 Slm) and at gas pressure from 0.3 to 40 Torr. The N atoms transmission through the membrane was measured from the intensity variation of the N2, 580 nm afterglow which is related to N atom density, before and after the membranes. The results obtained showed that N-atoms penetrate and cross the membranes with a transmission factor ( TN) varying from 20 to 70% during the exposure time (15 min), depending on flow rate and gas pressure. A maximum value TN = 0.7 (±0.05) is found for sufficient low flow rate (less than 0.1 Slm), that is for low flow gas velocity (about 2 × 102 cm s−1). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Surface modification of wool, polyamide 6 and cotton fabrics was investigated with an Ar–CF4 post-discharge plasma. The radical F, as determined by optical emission spectroscopy, is considered to be the main active species acting on the fabrics and producing different effects as a function of the textile substrate. Fluorination of the surface is achieved on the three materials studied, but only wool and polyamide 6 fluorinated surfaces become hydrophobic at long treatment times, and show antibacterial properties. The treatment conditions used are mild enough so as not to alter surface topography, as confirmed by scanning electron and atomic force microscopy. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The present paper studies the wetting behavior and shrink-resistance of keratin fibers prepared by solvent extraction or by industrial-like surfactant washing as well as their response to plasma treatments. The results obtained reveal that keratin fibers can be prepared by surfactant washing instead of using solvents, which will allow carrying out research studies in closer conditions to the industrial reality, and indeed in a much economic and environmentally friendly way. El síndrome de Cushing ectópico (SCE) se produce como resultado de la producción de la hormona adrenocorticotropa (ACTH) desde neoplasias extrahipofisarias. El SCE es un problema médico poco frecuente y difícil de diagnosticar. Se presenta el caso de un varón de 55 años, fumador activo, sin antecedentes médicos relevantes, que acude al servicio de urgencias por polidipsia y poliuria. Finalmente, tras diversas pruebas complementarias, se establece el juicio clínico de síndrome de Cushing secundario a un carcinoma de célula pequeña.

The low-energy limit of our SU(2)× SU(2)× U(1) electroweak model is analysed in order to fix the parameters. Bounds coming from the electron and muon magnetic anomaly are also considered. We compute the ratio between the direct and the resolved photon components of single jet and dijet production in ep collisions for the kinematical range covered by the most recent ZEUS data. We analyse the phenomenological consequences of different models for the structure of virtual photons in these observables and compare them with the available data. We also comment on the correlation between the so-called $x_{αmma}^{⤪ obs}$ and the 'true' x, that can be inferred from the data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent data on Drell-Yan processes induced by protons on nuclear targets gives non trivial information about nuclear effects. A very simple model for excess pions in nuclei reproduces the main features of these data, and also of those comming from deep inelastic experiments. This simple scheme gives an unified treatement of nuclear effects highlighting its importance in the deuteron and provides a precise prediction for future p-p and p-d Drell-Yan experiments.
