In this study we test the possibility that the asymmetry in the profiles of the H-alpha and Ca II K lines in red giant stars is due to the presence of an active chromosphere rather than to mass loss. To this end, we compare line profiles computed using relevant model chromospheres to profiles of the H-alpha and Ca II K lines observed in five red giant stars of the globular cluster NGC 2808. The spectra were taken with FLAMES during Science Verification, using the UVES mode at high resolution (R=43,000) for the H-alpha line, and GIRAFFE in MEDUSA mode (R=20,000) for the Ca II K line. We find that the observed profiles are better described if a negative (outward) velocity field is included in the model chromospheres. The ability to understand ambiguous idioms was assessed in 15 aphasic patients with preserved comprehension at a single word level. A string-to-word matching task was used. Patients were requested to choose one among four alternatives: a word associated with the figurative meaning of the idiom string: a word semantically associate with the last constituent of the idiom string; and two unrelated words. The results showed that patients' performance was impaired with respect to a group of matched controls, with patients showing a frontal and/or temporal lesion being the most impaired. A significant number of semantically associate errors were produced, suggesting an impairment of inhibition mechanisms and/or of recognition/activation of the idiomatic meaning. We present a long-term project aimed at completing the census of (bright) variable stars in Galactic globular clusters. While our main aim is to obtain a reliable assessment of the populations of RR Lyrae and type II Cepheid stars in the Galactic globular cluster system, due attention is also being paid to other types of variables, including SX Phoenicis stars, long-period variables, and eclipsing binaries., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. We report new HST/WFPC2 photometry for 10 globular clusters (GC) in M31 observed in F5555W(V) and F814W(I). Additionally we have reanalyzed HST archival data of comparable quality for 2 more GCs. Extraordinary care is taken to account for the effects of blended stellar images and required field subtraction. We thus reach 1 mag fainter than the horizontal branch (HB) even in unfavorable cases. We present the color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) and discuss their main features also in comparison with the properties of the Galactic GCs. This analysis is augmented with CMDs previously obtained and discussed by Fusi Pecci et al. (1996) on 8 other M31 clusters. We report the following significant results: 1. The locus of the red giant branches give reliable metallicity determinations which compare generally very well with ground-based integrated spectroscopic and photometric measures, as well as giving good reddening estimates. 2. The HB morphologies show the same behavior with metallicity as the Galactic GCs, with indications that the 2nd-parameter effect can be present in some GCs of our sample. However, at [Fe/H] ~ -1.7 we observe a number of GCs with red HB morphology such that the HB type versus [Fe/H] relation is offset from the MW and resembles that of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy. One explanation for the offset is that they are younger than their MW counterparts by 1-2 Gyr. 3. The Mv(HB)-[Fe/H] relationship has been determined and the slope (~0.20) is very similar to the values derived from RR Lyrae stars in the MW and the LMC. The zero-point of this relation based on the assumed distance modulus (m-M)o(M31)=24.47+/-0.03 is consistent with (m-M)o(LMC)=18.55., Comment: 50 pages, 12 figures (one in jpeg format), 8 tables, accepted for publication in The AJ

We have used RR Lyrae and Blue HB stars as tracers of the old Galactic halo, in order to study the halo structure and the galactic rotation as a function of height above the plane. Our sample includes 40 RR Lyrae and 80 BHB stars that are about 2 to 15 kpc above the plane, in a roughly 250 sq. deg. area around the North Galactic Pole (NGP). We use proper motions (derived from the GSC-II database) and radial velocities to determine the rotation of the halo. From the whole sample the motion appears to be significantly more retrograde than the samples in the solar neighborhood, confirming Majewski (1992) results and our own preliminary results based on 1/3 the present sample (Kinman et al. 2003; Spagna et al. 2003). However, the better statistics has now revealed the likely existence of two components, whose characteristics need an accurate analysis of systematic errors on the proper motions in order to be assessed in detail., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to appear in ``The Three Dimensional Universe with GAIA'', ESA SP-576, in press (needs aa.bst and Gaia2004.cls)

We have performed a detailed study of the pulsational and evolutionary characteristics of 133 RR Lyrae stars in the globular cluster NGC5272 (M3) using highly accurate BVI data taken on 5 separate epochs. M3 seems to contain no less than ~32% of Blazhko stars, and the occurrence and characteristics of the Blazhko effect have been analyzed in detail. We have identified a good number (~ 14%) of overluminous RR Lyrae stars that are likely in a more advanced evolutionary stage off the Zero Age Horizontal Branch (ZAHB). Physical parameters (i.e. temperature, luminosity, mass) have been derived from (B--V) colors and accurate color-temperature calibration, and compared with Horizontal Branch evolutionary models and with the requirements of stellar pulsation theory. Additional analysis by means of Fourier decomposition of the V light curves confirms, as expected, that no metallicity spread is present in M3. Evolution off the ZAHB does not affect [Fe/H] determinations, whereas Blazhko stars at low amplitude phase do affect [Fe/H] distributions as they appear more metal-rich. Absolute magnitudes derived from Fourier coefficients might provide useful average estimates for groups of stars, if applicable, but do not give reliable {\em individual} values. Intrinsic colors derived from Fourier coefficients show significant discrepancies with the observed ones, hence the resulting temperatures and temperature-related parameters are unreliable., Comment: 86 pages, 19 figures, 13 tables, in press AJ

We present the results of the first observations, taken with FLAMES during Science Verification, of red giant branch (RGB) stars in the globular cluster NGC 2808. A total of 137 stars was observed, of which 20 at high resolution (R=47,000) with UVES and the others at lower resolution (R=19,000-29,000) with GIRAFFE in MEDUSA mode, monitoring ~ 3 mag down from the RGB tip. Spectra were taken of the Halpha, Na I D and Ca II H and K lines. This is by far the largest and most complete collection of such data in globular cluster giants, both for the number of stars observed within one cluster, and for monitoring all the most important optical diagnostics of chromospheric activity/mass motions.Evidence of mass motions in the atmospheres was searched from asymmetry in the profiles and coreshifts of the Halpha, Na I D and Ca II K lines, as well as from Halpha emission wings. We have set the detection thresholds for the onset of Halpha emission, negative Na D_2 coreshifts and negative K_3 coreshifts at log L/Lsun ~ 2.5, 2.9 and 2.8, respectively. These limits are significantly fainter than the results found by nearly all previous studies. Also the fraction of stars where these features have been detected has been increased significantly with respect to the previous studies. Our observations confirm the widespread presence of chromospheres among globular cluster giants, as it was found among Population I red giants. Correlations among the independently measured physical properties of globular clusters (GCs) can provide powerful tests for theoretical models and new insights into their dynamics, formation, and evolution. We review briefly some of the previous work, and present preliminary results from a comparative study of GC correlations in the Local Group galaxies. The results so far indicate that these diverse GC systems follow the same fundamental correlations, suggesting a commonality of formative and evolutionary processes which produce them., Comment: An invited review, to appear in "New Horizons in Globular Cluster Astronomy", eds. HST-WFPC2 F555W and F814W photometry were obtained for 16 fields of the luminous nearby spiral galaxy M31, sampling the stellar content of the disk and the halo at different distances from the center, from ~ 20 to ~ 150 arcmin (i.e. ~ 4.5 to 35 kpc), down to limiting V and I magnitudes of ~ 27. The Color-Magnitude diagrams (CMD) show the presence of complex stellar populations, including an intermediate age/young population and older populations with a wide range of metallicity. Those fields superposed on the disk of M31 generally show a blue plume of stars which we identify with main sequence members. Accordingly, the star formation rate over the last 0.5 Gyr appears to have varied dramatically with location in the disk. All the CMDs show a prominent Red Giant Branch (RGB) with a descending tip in the V band, characteristic of metallicity higher than 1/10 Solar. A red clump is detected in all of the fields, and a weak blue horizontal branch is frequently present. The metallicity distributions (MDs), obtained by comparison of the RGB stars with globular cluster templates, are basically similar in all the sampled fields: they all show a long, albeit scantly populated metal-poor tail and a main component at [Fe/H] ~ -0.6. However, some differences also exist, e.g. in some fields a very metal-rich ([Fe/H] >= -0.2) component is present. Whereas the fraction of metal-poor stars seems to be approximately constant in all fields, the fraction of very-metal-rich stars varies with position and seems to be more prominent in those fields superposed on the disk and/or with the presence of streams or substructures. We present a proper motion survey over about 200 square degrees towards the NGP, based on the material used for the construction of the GSC-II, that we are using to study the vertical structure and kinematics of the Galaxy. In particular, we measured the rotation velocity of the halo up to 10 kpc above the galactic plane traced by a sample of RR Lyr{\ae} and BHB giants for which radial velocities were used to recover the complete distribution of the spatial velocities. The purpose of this paper is to show that RR Lyrae variables exist and can be detected in M31 globular clusters. We report on the first tentative identification of RR Lyrae candidates in four globular clusters of the Andromeda galaxy, i.e. G11, G33, G64 and G322. Based on HST-WFPC2 archive observations in the F555W and F814W filters spanning a total interval of about 5 consecutive hours we find evidence for 2, 4, 11 and 8 RR Lyrae variables of both ab and c Bailey types in G11, G33, G64 and G322, respectively. Several more candidates can be found by relaxing slightly the selection criteria. These numbers are quite consistent with the horizontal branch morphology exhibited by the four clusters, starting from the very blue HB in G11, and progressively moving to redder HBs in G64, G33 and G322., Comment: 4 pages, 3 included figures, accepted for publication by ApJ Letters

We report new, as yet unpublished HST/WFPC2 V, I photometry of 9 globular clusters in M31. These are part of a total sample of 19 clusters on M31 with well observed CMDs from HST. The clusters have the full range of horizontal branch morphologies from blue HB to red clump, but none are found with an extreme (blue only) horizontal branch. Plots of HB type vs [Fe/H] are similar to those of Galactic clusters, including a hint of second parameter clusters. Sixteen halo fields adjacent to the observed clusters included in our images have been analysed. The M31 halo metallicity distribution peaks at [Fe/H]=--0.7 with a tail toward low metallicity, resembling the halo of NGC 5128; metal rich giants appear to be centrally concentrated., Comment: 3 pages, 3 .ps figures, latex, IAU207_pasp.sty macro (included). New spectroscopic observations (R=15000 and 40000) are given for 31 nearby (V < 11) BHB star candidates. IUE low-resolution spectra are available for most of them. New determinations of temperature, gravity, reddening and abundances were obtained from these data using models computed by Castelli with an updated version of the ATLAS9 code. A summary of the visual photometry for these stars (including new photometry obtained at Kitt Peak) is also given. All 31 candidates are halo stars. We classify 28 as BHB stars because: (1) They lie close to the ZAHB (in a similar position to globular cluster BHB stars) in the Teff vs. log g plot. (2) Their distribution of vsini (less than 40 km/s) is similar to that found for the BHB stars in globular clusters. (3) Their [Fe/H] lies between -0.99 and -2.95 (mean [Fe/H] -1.67, dispersion 0.42 dex) which is similar to that found for field halo RR Lyrae and red HB stars but more metal- poor than for halo globular clusters. Field BHB stars with Teff greater than 8500 K show the He I (4471 A) line corresponding to solar abundance. (4) They show a similar average enhancement of the alpha-elements ([Mg/Fe] = +0.43 +/- 0.04 and [Ti/Fe] = +0.44 +/- 0.02) to that found for other halo field stars of similar metallicity.
