The class of ultra-hot Jupiters comprises giant exoplanets undergoing intense irradiation from their host stars. They have proved to be a particularly interesting population for their orbital and atmospheric properties. One such planet, WASP-121~b, is in a highly misaligned orbit close to its Roche limit, and its atmosphere exhibits a thermal inversion. These properties make WASP-121~b an interesting target for additional atmospheric characterization. In this paper, we present analysis of archival high-resolution optical spectra obtained during transits of WASP-121~b. Artifacts from the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect and Center-to-Limb Variation are deemed negligible. However, we discuss scenarios where these effects warrant more careful treatment by modeling the WASP-121 system and varying its properties. We report a new detection of atmospheric absorption from H$\alpha$ in the planet with a transit depth of $1.87\pm0.11\%$. We further confirm a previous detection of the Na I doublet, and report a new detection of Fe I via cross-correlation with a model template. We attribute the H$\alpha$ absorption to an extended Hydrogen atmosphere, potentially undergoing escape, and the Fe I to equilibrium chemistry at the planetary photosphere. The possibility for detuned spins to display synchronous oscillations in local observables is analyzed in the presence of collective dissipation and incoherent pumping. We show that there exist two distinct mechanisms that can give rise to synchronization, that is, non-degenerate subradiance and coalescence. The former, known as transient synchronization, is here generalized in the presence of pumping. It is due to long-lasting coherences leading to a progressive frequency selection. In the same set-up, even if under different conditions, coalescence and exceptional points are found which can lead to regimes where a single oscillation frequency is present in the relevant quantities. Still, we show that synchronization can be established only after steady phase-locking occurs. Distinctive spectral features of synchronization by these two different mechanisms are reported for two-time correlations.

The Pulsar Search Collaboratory (PSC) is a collaboration between the Green Bank Observatory and West Virginia University, funded by the National Science Foundation. The PSC program is currently expanding nationwide and engages high school students, teachers, and undergraduate mentors in real-world research by searching for pulsars in data collected with the 100-m Green Bank Telescope. In the process, students learn about observational radio astronomy, radio frequency interference, pulsar timing, and data analysis procedures. The primary goals of the PSC are to stimulate student interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) careers, to prepare teachers in implementing authentic research with students by training them within a professional scientific community, and to promote student use of information technologies through online activities and workshops. In this paper, we provide an overview of pulsar science and the data analysis students undertake, as well as a general overview of the program. We then discuss evaluation data collected from participants through a series of survey questions to determine if the program's initial goals were met. The program had a positive impact on the students according to multiple measures, in particular, on their understanding of the nature of scientific inquiry and motivation to pursue STEM career paths., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in American Journal of Physics

Synchronization phenomena have been recently reported in the quantum realm at atomic level due to collective dissipation. In this work we propose a dimer lattice of trapped atoms realizing a dissipative spin model where quantum synchronization occurs instead in presence of local dissipation. Atoms synchronization is enabled by the inhomogeneity of staggered local losses in the lattice and is favored by an increase of spins detuning. The phenomenon of spontaneous synchronization arises in a broad range of systems when the mutual interaction strength among components overcomes the effect of detuning. Recently it has been studied also in the quantum regime with a variety of approaches and in different dynamical contexts. We review here transient synchronization arising during the relaxation of open quantum systems, describing the common enabling mechanism in presence of either local or global dissipation. Understanding the physical significance and probing the global invariants characterizing quantum topological phases in extended systems is a main challenge in modern physics with major impact in different areas of science. Here, a quantum-information-inspired probing method is proposed where topological phase transitions are revealed by a non-Markovianity quantifier. The idea is illustrated by considering the decoherence dynamics of an external read-out qubit that probes a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain with either pure dephasing or dissipative coupling. Qubit decoherence features and non-Markovianity measure clearly signal the topological phase transition of the SSH chain.

The development Open Source Software fundamentally depends on the participation and commitment of volunteer developers to progress. Several works have presented strategies to increase the on-boarding and engagement of new contributors, but little is known on how these diverse groups of developers self-organise to work together. To understand this, one must consider that, on one hand, platforms like GitHub provide a virtually unlimited development framework: any number of actors can potentially join to contribute in a decentralised, distributed, remote, and asynchronous manner. On the other, however, it seems reasonable that some sort of hierarchy and division of labour must be in place to meet human biological and cognitive limits, and also to achieve some level of efficiency. These latter features (hierarchy and division of labour) should translate into recognisable structural arrangements when projects are represented as developer-file bipartite networks. In this paper we analyse a set of popular open source projects from GitHub, placing the accent on three key properties: nestedness, modularity and in-block nestedness -which typify the emergence of heterogeneities among contributors, the emergence of subgroups of developers working on specific subgroups of files, and a mixture of the two previous, respectively. These analyses show that indeed projects evolve into internally organised blocks. Furthermore, the distribution of sizes of such blocks is bounded, connecting our results to the celebrated Dunbar number both in off- and on-line environments. Our analyses create a link between bio-cognitive constraints, group formation and online working environments, opening up a rich scenario for future research on (online) work team assembly., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 1 table
