Introduction and objectives: In December 2019, SARS-CoV-2, was discovered as the agent of COVID-19 disease. Cardiac arrhythmias have been reported as frequent but their incidence is unknown. The aim of this research was to assess the real incidence of cardiac arrhythmias among COVID-19 patients admitted to Portuguese hospitals and to understand the underlying prognostic implications. Methods: The Portuguese Association of Arrhythmology, Pacing and Electrophysiology (APAPE) conducted a survey in Portuguese hospitals to assess the occurrence of arrhythmias in COVID-19 patients, their clinical characteristics, the use of experimental therapies and the impact on QT interval. Results: Twenty hospitals participated, reporting 692 hospitalized patients. An arrhythmic episode occurred in 81 (11.7%) and 64 (79%) had detailed information on these episodes. New onset arrhythmias occurred in 41 (64%) patients, 45 (70.3%) male, median age 73.5 (61-80.3) years. There were 51 (79.7%) with associated comorbidities, mainly arterial hypertension (41, 64.1%). Of 53 patients (82.3%) on experimental therapy, 7 (10.9%) had an increased QTc interval. Regarding arrhythmias, two patients (3.1%) had ventricular tachycardia, 5 (7.8%) sinus bradycardia, 17 (26.6%) paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia and 40 (62.5%) atrial fibrillation or flutter. At the time of reporting, there had been no deaths due to arrhythmic syndrome or related complications. Conclusions: In a population of COVID-19 patients. The incidence of cardiac arrhythmias is high but not associated with increased cardiac mortality although it does though occur frequently in extremely ill patients and with multiple organ failure. Regardless of the use of experimental drugs, the incidence of ventricular arrhythmias is low and atrial fibrillation and other supraventricular arrhythmias are the most prevalent arrythmias. Destes, 51 (79,7%) tinham comorbilidades associadas, maioritariamente hipertensão arterial (41, 64,1%).

The lipid mediators platelet-activating factor (PAF) and lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) play relevant pathophysiological roles in Trypanosoma cruzi infection. Several species of LPC, including C18:1 LPC, which mimics the effects of PAF, are synthesized by T. cruzi. The present study identified a receptor in T. cruzi, which was predicted to bind to PAF, and found it to be homologous to members of the progestin and adiponectin family of receptors (PAQRs). We constructed a three-dimensional model of the T. cruzi PAQR (TcPAQR) and performed molecular docking to predict the interactions of the TcPAQR model with C16:0 PAF and C18:1 LPC. We knocked out T. cruzi PAQR (TcPAQR) gene and confirmed the identity of the expressed protein through immunoblotting and immunofluorescence assays using an anti-human PAQR antibody. Wild-type (WT) and knockout (KO) parasites were also used to investigate the in vitro cell differentiation and interactions with peritoneal mouse macrophages; TcPAQR KO parasites were unable to react to C16:0 PAF or C18:1 LPC. Our data are highly suggestive that PAF and LPC act through TcPAQR in T. cruzi, triggering its cellular differentiation and ability to infect macrophages.

non-thyroidal illness syndrome ,thyroid hormones ,fasting ,sepsis ,CLP ,thyroid hormone metabolism ,Physiology ,QP1-981 - Abstract
Fasting and sepsis induce profound changes in thyroid hormone (TH) central and peripheral metabolism. These changes affect TH action and are called the non-thyroidal illness syndrome (NTIS). To date, it is still debated whether NTIS represents an adaptive response or a real hypothyroid state at the tissue level. Moreover, even though it has been considered the same syndrome, we hypothesized that fasting and sepsis induce a distinct set of changes in thyroid hormone metabolism. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the central and peripheral expression of genes involved in the transport (MCT8/Slc16a2 and MCT10/Slc16a10), metabolism (Dio1, Dio2, and Dio3) and action (Thra and Thrb) of TH during NTIS induced by fasting or sepsis. Male mice were subjected to a 48 h period of fasting or cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced sepsis. At the peripheral level, fasting led to: (1) reduced serum thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), expression of Dio1, Thra, Slc16a2, and MCT8 protein in liver; (2) increased hepatic Slc16a10 and Dio3 expression; and (3) decreased Slc16a2 and Slc16a10 expressions in the thyroid gland. Fasting resulted in reduction of Tshb expression in the pituitary and increased expression of Dio2 in total hypothalamus, arcuate (ARC) and paraventricular (PVN) nucleus. CLP induced sepsis resulted in reduced: (1) T4 serum levels; (2) Dio1, Slc16a2, Slc16a10, Thra, and Thrb expression in liver as well as Slc16a2 expression in the thyroid gland (3) Thrb and Tshb mRNA expression in the pituitary; (4) total leukocyte counts in the bone marrow while increased its number in peritoneal and pleural fluids. In summary, fasting- or sepsis-driven NTIS promotes changes in the set point of hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis through different mechanisms. Reduced hepatic THRs expression in conjunction with reduced TH transporters expression in the thyroid gland may indicate, respectively, reduction in the peripheral action and in the secretion of TH, which may contribute to the low TH serum levels observed in both models.

This study aimed to investigate the pathophysiology of hepatic microcirculatory dysfunction in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).In Wistar rats, NAFLD model was induced by 20 weeks of high-fat diet (HFD) feeding. Rolling and adhesion of leukocytes and tissue perfusion in hepatic microcirculation were examined using in vivo microscopic and laser speckle contrast imaging (LSCI), respectively. Oxidative stress and inflamatory parameters were analysed by TBARs, catalase enzyme activity, RT-PCR and ELISA. The participation of advanced glycation end-products (AGE) and its receptor RAGE was evaluated by the measurement of gene and protein expression of RAGE by RT-PCR and Western-blot, respectively and by liver and serum quantification of fluorescent AGEs.Wistar rats fed high-fat diet (HFD) showed increase in epididymal and abdominal fat content, systolic arterial blood pressure, fasting blood glucose levels, hepatic triglycerides and cholesterol, and impairment of glucose and insulin metabolisms. Liver histology confirmed the presence of steatosis and ultrasound analysis revealed increased liver size and parenchymal echogenicity in HFD-fed rats. HFD causes significant increases in leukocyte rolling and adhesion on hepatic microcirculation and decrease in liver microvascular blood flow. Liver tissue presented increase in oxidative stress and inflammtion. At 20 weeks, there was a significantly increase in AGE content in the liver and serum of HFD-fed rats and an increase in RAGE gene expression in the liver. The increase in liver AGE levels and microcirculatory disturbances could play a role in the pathogenesis of liver injury and are key components of NAFLD.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a progressive hereditary disease with cardiac involvement. This study aimed to evaluate cardiac remodeling pathways of left ventricle in an animal model of DMD (mdx mice) submitted to aerobic exercise. C57BL/10 and C57BL/10- DMDMdx mice, 6 months old, male, were used. The experimental protocol of physical exercise lasted eight weeks, in which the trained groups (Mdx-T) were submitted to a physical training protocol while the animals of groups control (C) and sedentary mdx (Mdx –S) did not undergo intervention. After euthanasia, the hearts were removed to be submitted to the following analyses: morphometric (analysis of nuclei density and cardiomyocyte thickness and analysis of connective tissue); immunohistochemistry for in situ analysis of proteins: MMP-2, MMP-9, COX-2 and 8-OHdG. Student's t test was used for independent samples in the comparison between groups in relation to the variables cardiomyocyte thickness, cardiomyocyte profile area and collagen stereology. Regarding 8-OHdG and COX-2 immunostaining, ANOVA and Tukey's multiple comparisons were used. The photomicrographs indicated that the Mdx-S and Mdx-T groups showed diffuse loss of cardiomyocyte, increased extracellular matrix space and areas of inflammatory infiltrate and connective tissue, these alterations being more evident in the Mdx-T group. The morphometric analysis showed that the thickness of the cardiomyocytes of the Mdx-T animals was smaller than that of the Mdx-S. In the qualitative analysis of MMP2 and 9, it was possible to observe their presence in areas of collagen tissue accumulation in mdx animals, more evident in the Mdx-T groups. The immunoexpression of COX-2 was higher in the animals of the Mdx-T group than in the Mdx-S and was higher than in C group. The presence of 8-OHdG was higher in the Mdx-T and Mdx-S groups when compared to C group. The aerobic training protocol was able to increase the process of degeneration and atrophy of cardiomyocytes. In Mdx-T group, there was greater degradation of collagen related to MMPs and exacerbation of the inflammatory condition and oxidative stress related to DNA damage, evidenced by the enhanced presence of COX-2 and 8-OHdG, respectively.

The idea of UN Sustainable Development Goals that no one is left behind is gaining higher importance, especially during the pandemic. Despite social sustainability is a complex topic due to the absence of a clear definition and its subjectivity. It relates with existing social problems, where the COVID-19 pandemic has also increased these problems in the food value chain: poor decent working conditions, lack of occupational health and safety at the workplace, forced labor, and intensive hours of work, among others. As half of the world’s workforce is involved in the food industry, the better understanding of its associated value chains in times of pandemic can contribute to improve social sustainable practices. With this aim the current paper identifies and analyzes current challenges and problems linked to social sustainability in times of COVID-19, identifying key actors and potential solutions and recommendations. The research adopts a qualitative and exploratory method applied through the Grounded Theory analysis combining desk research with inputs from a multi-stakeholder consultation of 35 fishery experts from all over the world. The paper provides new insights and shared experiences about social sustainability in the fish value chain to overcome the crisis times we are living in.

235U neutron-induced fission cross-section is commonly used as reference for determining other isotope fission cross-section. However, below 150 keV this cross section is only included as Standard at the thermal point and recently its integral value between 7.8 eV and 11 eV [1]. The resolved resonance region, spanning up to 2.25 keV, has been reevaluated with high resolution in the last ENDF/B-VIII release [2] and a SAMMY resonance analysis was done by L. Leal et al. [3] including the CERN-nTOF experimental work of Paradela el al. [4] up to 10 keV, taken into account the IAEA Reference file. In this work the 235U(n,f) low-background and high-resolution experimental data obtained at the CERN-nTOF facility is combined with previous high-resolution experimental data, in order to produce a very fine grid dataset with normalisation to the IAEA Reference file. The extremelyhigh energy calibration required to reproduce the resonance sharp profiles is based on the nTOF DAQ system with a resolution below 0.1% with reference to the 8.78 eV resonance and to the sharp Al(n,g) capture dip at 5.904 keV. The comparison of the so-evaluated profile with the experimental data and with the evaluated ones will be discussed.

The application of nanotechnology to the electrical insulation of transformers has become a topic of interest in the last few years. Most authors propose the use of dielectric nanofluids, which are obtained by dispersing low concentrations of nanoparticles in conventional insulating liquids. Although a good number of works have demonstrated that dielectric nanofluids may exhibit superior dielectric properties than the base fluids, there is a key issue that still needs to be addressed, which is the long-term stability of those liquids. The studies about the stability of dielectric nanofluids fluids that have been published so far analyze the performance of the fluids under laboratory conditions which are far from the real working conditions the liquids would be subjected to when working inside a transformer. In this paper, an experimental study is presented that evaluates the stability of several dielectric nanofluids under realistic transformer operating conditions. As the study demonstrates, the stability of dielectric nanofluids depends strongly on the working temperature, on the materials applied to obtain the fluid, and on the manufacturing procedure, while other aspects, such as the interaction with other materials, are less relevant. Additional topics, such as the methods applied for evaluation of the stability and the physical properties of the dielectric nanofluids under test, are discussed in the paper as well.

We measured the Coulomb dissociation of
16 O into4 He and12 C within the FAIR Phase-0 program at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt, Germany. From this we will extract the photon dissociation cross section16 O(α,γ)12 C, which is the time reversed reaction to 12C(α,γ)16 O. With this indirect method, we aim to improve on the accuracy of the experimental data at lower energies than measured so far. The expected low cross section for the Coulomb dissociation reaction and close magnetic rigidity of beam and fragments demand a high precision measurement. Hence, new detector systems were built and radical changes to the R3 B setup were necessary to cope with the high-intensity16 O beam. All tracking detectors were designed to let the unreacted16 O ions pass, while detecting the12 C and4 He. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract

- Abstract
Astrospartus mediterraneus (Risso, 1826) (Echinodermata: Ophiuroidea) is an emblematic Mediterranean species yet, it has few reports and hasn’t received much attention from the marine scientific community to date. In the framework of a project to assess how to mitigate the impact of artisanal fishing on benthic communities at the Site of Community Importance (SCI) of Cap de Creus (NW Mediterranean) (MITICAP Project), an unusually high abundance of the basket star (A. mediterraneus) was observed in 2018 as part of the by-catch of the local artisanal fishers. Indeed, the fishers involved in the project reported that this species had increased in abundance and expanded its distribution over the past years, ultimately interfering with their fishing activity. This work benefits from the Local Ecological Knowledge of the fishers, analyses field surveys and aims to elucidate the abundance, distribution, size, and structure of A. mediterraneus populations; as well as to examine the possible impact this species has on the artisanal fisheries performance. Data collection was performed through bycatch photo analysis of regular fishing events from May to August, analysis of video-transects recorded by means of Remote Operated Vehicles and conducting interviews with fishers to identify the impact. Basket stars were associated with rocky substrates with presence of gorgonians located between 50 to 80 m depth, preferentially occurring on sloping areas. Despite their high abundances (0.45±0.71 ind/m2), the aggregations witnessed in the Cap de Creus area could not be determined as an outbreak due to the lack of longtime monitoring data thus, yet it seems apparent based on the LEK of the fishers that the species has been on the rise for the past years and they unanimously consider that its proliferation causes them a handicap in terms of monetary and time losses

- Abstract
The canning industry plays a crucial role in the sector of marine foods, but produces several organic wastes and effluents with reduced economic value that must be upgraded to comply with the circular bioeconomy principles. Initially, we have searched the best experimental conditions for the hydrolysis of upper and lower halves from yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) heads by four commercial proteases (alcalase, papain, protamex and esperase). Then, optimal conditions were corroborated at 5 L pH-Stat reactor producing fish oil, bones and fish protein hydrolysates (FPH). Alcalase and esperase applied on upper head were the options that led to the largest volumes of oils recovered, and the highest degrees of hydrolysis, digestion yields and concentrations of protein in FPH. Fish oils showed an excellent content in omega-3 fatty acids, mainly the highly valued docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). In the case of FPH, the proportion of human essential amino acids was higher than 40% and the average protein size in the interval 1400–1800 Da. Finally, these hydrolysates were incorporated, as source of protein material in substitution of commercial peptones, in two types of bacterial culture media (marine and Man-Rogosa-Sharpe, MRS). The bioproductions of the four bacteria assayed (two lactic acid bacteria and two marine probiotic bacteria) in the low-cost media formulated with tuna hydrolysates were generally similar or even higher than found in commercial broths. The whole of these results evidenced the validity of the present proposal, aimed to the integral production of valuable biocompounds, in order to contribute to a more sustainable tuna canning industry

- Abstract
Tisochrysis lutea is an important microalgal species for fucoxanthin and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) production with an optimum cultivation temperature of approximately 30 °C. The aim of the present work was to develop a winter strain with high productivity at 15 °C. The response of the original strain to a decrease in temperature from 30 °C to 15 °C was investigated in continuous turbidostat experiments. This was followed by adaptation for >180 days at 15 °C and 2 rounds of sorting for cells with high chlorophyll fluorescence (top 5%) using fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS). For the original strain the productivity of biomass, fucoxanthin, and DHA decreased by 92 %, 98 % and 85 % respectively when decreasing the temperature from 30 °C to 15 °C. In the sorted cold-adapted ‘winter strain’, biomass, fucoxanthin, and DHA productivities were similar to those at 30 °C. In addition, the fucoxanthin concentration increased from 1.11 to 4.24 mg g−1 dry weight and the polar lipid fraction in total fatty acids increased from 21 % to 55 %. The winter strain showed a robust and stable phenotype after one year of cultivation, expanding the outdoor fucoxanthin and lipid production seasons for this species.

- Abstract
[EN] Fishing is one of the human activities with the highest impact on seabeds. During the past hundred years it has gradually expanded to deeper waters, and almost all continental shelf and slopes worldwide have now been fished to some extent. In EU managed fishing grounds between 200 and 1000 m depth, it is estimated that bottom trawling has impacted between 2% and 77% of the total area (Eigaard et al. 2017). This has caused a substantial degradation of vulnerable marine ecosystems, which are generally formed by long-lived, slow growing, sessile (attached to the seafloor) structuring organisms. Among these ecosystems, we encounter sponge grounds, coral gardens and cold-water coral reefs that provide habitat to a wide range of associated species, several of which are targeted by fishing fleets. In addition, the ecological effects of bottom trawling on these ecosystems is extremely long-lasting, as no sign of recovery has been observed in areas closed to trawling for more than ten years (Clark et al. 2019). - Abstract
[EN] During the 20th and 21st centuries, the growing demand for marine resources by Mediterranean countries has led to a gradual increase in fishing pressure. As a result, both coastal and continental Mediterranean waters have suffered from the impacts of trawling and, to a lesser extent, of artisanal fishing with longlines, trammel nets and other minor fishing gear (Grinyó et al. 2021, Demestre et al. 2021). Following the indications proposed by the European Marine Strategy, a set of particularly vulnerable areas has begun to be delimited, and protection measures are to be implemented for their conservation (Law 41/2010, of 29 December, on marine protection; https://www.boe.es/eli/s/l/2010/12/29/41). These areas seek to develop integrated policies to promote sustainable fishing practices that prevent the over-exploitation of natural resources while at the same time mitigating the impacts that may occur on benthic habitats, which are those found directly on the seafloor. Although fisher’s gilds are still operative in most marine protected areas, only a minority of scientific studies and management plans have integrated the experience and knowledge of fishers in such areas. This scant involvement of fishers in drawing up the management measures often results in their opposition to them, as well as a lack of motivation regarding proposals for a more sustaniable explotation and preservation of the marine environment. - Abstract
Gorgonians are one of the main ecosystem engineers on marine benthic ecosystems across a wide range of latitudes and depths. These organisms play a key role in marine benthic communities, and thanks to their complex tridimensional structures, they provide shelter and nursery grounds to marine species acting as habitat-forming species, among other functions. After more than a 5 yearlong experience on restoration projects in the Catalan continental platform1 and the new RRI participatory approaches of the European project ResBios2, there were enough evidences to believe on the existence of a dense population of Leoptogorgia sarmentosa (Esper, 1791) within Barcelona’s waters, which led to the project “Gorgònia Barcelona”3. This project was born in 2021 in Barcelona, one of the cities with more inhabitants of the Mediterranean, in collaboration with the Catalan Federation of Subaquatic Activities (FECDAS) and local social associations. This project counts with the support of the City Hall of Barcelona and the community of practices of biosciences & RRI from ResBios. The framework of the project consists of two base grounds: 1) prospective activities on the study area and regular samplings of L. sarmentosa for aquaria experiments regarding future active restoration techniques for the species. 2) the potential development of a new submarine touristic attraction in the city, in collaboration with FECDAS and local social associations. Participatory processes involving different stakeholders (local government actors, educators, policy makers, diving centres, neighborhood institutions, citizenship) are followed. The project’s approach allows not only to set a base ground for experimental analysis and explore improvements on existing marine restoring techniques, but also to conduct epistemological studies and contribute to ocean literacy and to blue economy of the city of Barcelona. In order to face the next challenges of our time we should re-consider our knowledge but also o

Abstract: Introduction: Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging is increasingly important in the diagnostic work-up of a wide range of heart diseases, including those with arrhythmogenic potential. Objective: To assess the added value of CMR in etiological diagnosis of ventricular arrhythmias after an inconclusive conventional investigation. Methods: Patients undergoing CMR between 2005 and 2011 for investigation of ventricular arrhythmias were included (n=113). All had documented arrhythmias. Those with a definite diagnosis from a previous investigation and those with evidence of coronary artery disease (acute coronary syndrome, typical angina symptoms, increase in biomarkers or positive stress test) were excluded. CMR results were considered relevant when they fulfilled diagnostic criteria. Results: Of the 113 patients, 57.5% were male and mean age was 41.7±16.2 years. Regarding the initial arrhythmia, 38.1% had ventricular fibrillation/sustained ventricular tachycardia (VF/VT) and 61.9% had less complex ventricular ectopy. CMR imaging showed criteria of a specific diagnosis in 42.5% of patients, was totally normal in 36.3%, and showed non-specific alterations in the remainder. In VF/VT patients, specific criteria were found in 60.4%, and in 31.4% of those with less complex ectopy. The most frequent diagnoses were arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia, ventricular non-compaction and myopericarditis. It is worth noting that, although there was no evidence of previous coronary artery disease, 6.2% of patients had a late gadolinium enhancement distribution pattern compatible with myocardial infarction. Conclusion: CMR gives additional and important information in the diagnostic work-up of ventricular arrhythmias after an inconclusive initial investigation. The proportion of patients with diagnostic criteria was 42.5% (60.0% in those with VF/VT), and CMR was completely normal in 36.6%. Introduction: Gated SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) has been used to quantify mechanical dyssynchrony. Mechanical dyssynchrony appears to be related to response to cardiac resynchronization therapy. Objective: To evaluate the presence and predictors of mechanical dyssynchrony in patients with impaired left ventricular function (LVEF) ≤50%. Methods: The study included 143 consecutive patients referred for gated SPECT MPI with LVEF ≤50%. Gated SPECT MPI was performed according to a stress/rest protocol acquiring images with Tc 99m-tetrofosmin. Emory Cardiac Toolbox software was used for phase analysis and a standard deviation (SD) ≥43° was considered to indicate mechanical dyssynchrony. Results: Mechanical dyssynchrony was present in 53.1% of the patients. Its predictors were diabetes (OR 2.0, p≤0.05), summed stress score (OR 1.1, p≤0.0005), summed rest score (OR 1.1, p≤0.0001), end-diastolic volume (OR 1.0, p≤0.0001), LVEF (OR 0.9, p≤0.0001), LVEF ≤35% (OR 3.1, p≤0.005) and LVEF ≤35% and QRS ≥120 ms (OR 3.5, p≤0.05). In this study QRS width and QRS ≥120 ms were not predictors of mechanical dyssynchrony. Conclusions: Myocardial perfusion imaging can be used to assess mechanical dyssynchrony. In patients with impaired ventricular function mechanical dyssynchrony was highly prevalent and was related to parameters of left ventricular function and perfusion. A amostra estudada incluiu 143 pacientes. Foram preditores de dessincronia, a diabetes (OR 2,0, p ≤ 0,05), o score de esforço (OR 1,1, p ≤ 0,0005), o score de repouso (OR 1,1, p ≤ 0,0001), o volume telediastólico (OR 1,0, p ≤ 0,0001), a FEVE (OR 0,9, p ≤ 0,0001), FEVE ≤ 35% (OR 3,1, p ≤ 0,005) e a presença em simultâneo de FEVE ≤ 35% e QRS ≥120 ms (OR 3,5, p ≤ 0,05). Abstract: This research aims to determine the cardiac morphological and functional changes that occur during the competitive season in elite athletes with previously-induced adaptive changes. Two echocardiographic examinations were performed in each player of a senior professional football team, the first at the beginning of the training phase and the other at the peak of the competitive season. It was demonstrated that after the brief period of deconditioning during the holiday period, further changes took place, even in these athletes with several years of prior professional activity. There was a significant increase between the two assessments in left ventricular wall thickness and mass, and in left atrial diameter, but left ventricular diastolic diameter and the diastolic function parameters considered remained the same. Greater left ventricular wall hypertrophy was related to more competitive playing time in these players. The main limitation of the study is the small number of athletes studied.
