This article from the Journal of Biblical Counseling discusses the case study of a woman named Jane who struggles with scrupulosity, a form of religious OCD. Jane seeks help from her small group leaders but her anxious questioning can distance them. The article suggests equipping those in Jane's life to provide long-term support and training small group leaders on how to help without enabling her compulsions. The text emphasizes the importance of a collaborative approach and caring for the caregivers. Success in counseling for Jane involves living with ambiguity and doubt while still engaging with her faith, and celebrating progress and providing encouragement. The article concludes by highlighting the potential for church relationships to be a lifeline for someone like Jane, with pastors, small group leaders, and friends all playing a role in providing support and care. - Abstract
Conscience is defined as the cornerstone of ethics and is considered a valuable asset. There is, however, little evidence about how Iranian nurses perceive conscience. The purpose of this study was to psychometrically evaluate the Persian version of the Perception of Conscience Questionnaire (PCQ) in Iranian nurses. In this cross sectional and descriptive study, a psychometric evaluation of the PCQ was conducted on Iranian nurses in 2022. A total of 300 nurses participated in this study to validate the PCQ. At first, the initial translation and determination of face validity was done, and content validity was assessed using the Content Validity Index and Content Validity Ratio. Reliability was determined by intra-class correlation coefficient and Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The construct validity of the PCQ was determined by exploratory factor analysis, which led to the extraction of five factors of warning signal, valuable asset, spiritual power, burden and conscience outcomes from the initial 14 factors of the questionnaire. Reliability of the whole questionnaire was calculated to be 0.80 using Cronbach's alpha. While an intra-class correlation coefficient of 0.58 indicated average stability, the five-factor construct of the PCQ showed good validity and reliability. Therefore, our findings proved that this tool is suitable for assessing Iranian nurses’ perception of conscience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study aims to develop a causal model of nurses' compassionate competence based on professional self-concept and work conscience and the mediating role of self-efficacy and is considered a descriptive and structural equation modeling. The statistical population of the study includes all nurses working in the psychiatric ward of Ardabil hospitals in 2020. The sample constituted of 200 nurses working in the psychiatric ward selected by purposive sampling and having entry and exit criteria from the statistical population. Data were collected using the Lee and Simon Compassionate Competence Scale, Cowin et al.'s Professional Self-Concept Questionnaire, the Costa and McCray Work Conscience Questionnaire, and the Scherer and Maddox Self-Efficacy Questionnaire. Following that, the data were examined using structural equation modeling (SEM). Based on the results, the causal model of the relationship between professional self-concept, work conscience, self-efficacy, and compassionate competence of nurses was confirmed according to different fit indices. Professional self-concept, work conscience, and self-efficacy directly affect nurses' compassionate competence. Moreover, professional self-concept and work conscience through self-efficacy indirectly affect nurses' compassionate competence (P < 0.05). Therefore, professional self-concept, work conscience, and self-efficacy play an essential role in the level of compassionate competence of psychiatric nurses and targeting these three components by psychological therapies can effectively improve the compassionate competence of psychiatric nurses. Objectives: This study was designed to determine the relationship between religion and healthcare practitioners' attitudes towards conscience clauses in Poland. Methods: We developed a survey assessing impact of religion on attitudes healthcare professionals towards the conscience clause. These questions were explored using a sample of 300 Polish healthcare professionals. Results: The results indicate that religiosity was a significant predictor of acceptance of conscience clauses. It also influenced healthcare practitioners' opinions on medical professionals that should be granted the right to conscience clauses and medical services that may be denied on moral grounds. There was also a significant relationship between healthcare practitioners' religiosity and their eagerness to use conscience clauses in a situation of moral conflict. Finally, religious healthcare practitioners were more concerned about the personal consequences of using this right in a medical environment. Conclusion: This study shows that at the same time, both religious and non-religious healthcare professionals believed that the Polish regulations regarding conscience clause are unclear and inaccurate, therefore leading to misinterpretation and abuse regulation of law. The Catholic approach demands some "determinate" (Walzer [24]: 178) and "socially expressed" (Walzer [24]: 177) punishment - and this is I the i reason why Walzer prefers it. And, more importantly, it obscures the fundamental nature and importance of the problem of dirty hands.[6] Consider how, for example, although Walzer concedes that we all - politicians and non-politicians alike - can face dirty hands dilemmas, he still insists that there is something special about the way in which politicians face these (or about what is at stake when it is politicians who face these dilemmas, etc.). Tellingly, Walzer suggests that this alleged right that non-politicians may have (and that politicians, regarding their political activity, certainly lack) "might be regarded as the moral equivalent of our legal right not to incriminate ourselves" (Walzer [24]: 165). The protestant approach exemplified by Weber also prescribes a punishment, but in Walzer's estimation, such punishment is too private and indeterminate, entirely left to the conscience of the tragic hero, thus giving us reason to suspect the politician with dirty hands of "either masochism or hypocrisy or both" (Walzer [24]: 177).[17] Walzer prefers the Catholic approach over the Protestant approach - Camus over Weber - because only the former prescribes a "determinate penalty" for a "determinate crime" (Walzer [24]: 178). LEGAL status of religious dissenters , *LEGISLATORS , *CIVIL disobedience - Abstract
The concept of purely penal law, as developed by the Spanish Jesuit Francisco Suárez in the early seventeenth century, argues that promulgated law is neither morally binding upon the citizen nor conceived as a moral requirement by legislators. Rather, the law is strictly punitive in its intent and function. The theory, which grants the individual the right to determine law's rational and moral significance, touched off a heated debate that has been renewed at various times in history yet has not resurfaced since the mid-twentieth century. This article argues for the veracity and legitimacy of the concept in light of contemporary legal and penal dynamics. It also argues that the Catholic Church should take notice of its insights in its understanding of the relationship between church and state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PASTORAL care , *CONSCIENCE , *PRAXIS (Process) - Abstract
This article focuses on William Perkins (1558-1602) and his pastoral practice. Specifically, the goal is to describe how Perkins' view of the conscience impacted and shaped his understanding and praxis of soul care within the church context. For Perkins, caring for souls involves ministering to and guiding the conscience to a restful assurance and an assured rest grounded in scriptural truth and proper godly affections, which in turn are supernaturally established and formed by the renewing grace applied by the Spirit. If a disturbed conscience is the closest thing to hell in this life, and a good conscience is a glimpse of paradise, then caring for souls fundamentally involves caring for the rest and assurance of the conscience. It is that rest and assurance that leads to a fruitful life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Understanding the interplay between psychosocial factors and polygenic risk scores (PRS) may help elucidate the biopsychosocial etiology of high alcohol consumption (HAC). This study examined the psychosocial moderators of HAC, determined by polygenic risk in a 10-year longitudinal study of US military veterans. We hypothesized that positive psychosocial traits (e.g. social support, personality traits, optimism, gratitude) may buffer risk of HAC in veterans with greater polygenic liability for alcohol consumption (AC). Methods: Data were analyzed from 1323 European-American US veterans who participated in the National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, a 10-year, nationally representative longitudinal study of US military veterans. PRS reflecting genome-wide risk for AC (AUDIT-C) was derived from a Million Veteran Program genome-wide association study (N = 200 680). Results: Among the total sample, 328 (weighted 24.8%) had persistent HAC, 131 (weighted 9.9%) had new-onset HAC, 44 (weighted 3.3%) had remitted HAC, and 820 (weighted 62.0%) had no/low AC over the 10-year study period. AUDIT-C PRS was positively associated with persistent HAC relative to no/low AC [relative risk ratio (RRR) = 1.43, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.23–1.67] and remitted HAC (RRR = 1.63, 95% CI = 1.07–2.50). Among veterans with higher AUDIT-C PRS, greater baseline levels of agreeableness and greater dispositional gratitude were inversely associated with persistent HAC. Conclusions: AUDIT-C PRS was prospectively associated with persistent HAC over a 10-year period, and agreeableness and dispositional gratitude moderated this association. Clinical interventions designed to target these modifiable psychological traits may help mitigate risk of persistent HAC in veterans with greater polygenic liability for persistent HAC. The main objective of this research is the qualitative analysis of the narratives on democratic education in the official curriculum of Spanish History in the 2nd year of the Baccalaureate. In order to achieve this objective, a critical discourse analysis (CDA) and an instrument designed ad hoc for the research were applied. The results show that the Spanish curriculum contains a neutral description of democratic education without judgement of the social groups represented, although there is an underlying discourse that tends ideologically towards the values of social democracy. Employee's patience, conscience and resilience are important organizational behavior patterns that affect both organizational climate and productivity. The purpose of this study is to ascertain how employees in various professions differ in terms of their degrees of conscience, patience, and psychological resilience. The study, which has a causal comparative design from quantitative research methods, uses critical case sampling. The sample group in the current instance consists of 781 employees from four major professions, including police officers, teachers, nurses, and religious officials. The study's findings revealed a strong and favorable association between patience and conscience. The association between patience and psychological resilience is strong and favorable. Employees who are married and female are more likely to display all three behavioral traits than single and males. More often than other professions, teachers and nurses demonstrate all three of these traits. Religious officials have lesser levels of psychological resilience, patience, and conscience than other professions. Professional tenure had little bearing on how the employees exhibited any of the three characteristics. In addition to highlighting fresh discussion points on the topic, this study is groundbreaking in its determination of the relationship between all three variables. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper explores the concept of truth in Bion's theory and in the post-Bionian context of the analytic field. Truth is addressed on three levels: epistemological, metapsychological, and clinical. Bion criticizes positivism in psychoanalysis, and the same vertex when it appears in psychoanalysis itself, stating that the search for truth at all costs is similar to the arrogance and stupidity of the psychotic part of the personality. He revolutionizes the analytic concept of truth by orienting it to the function of the emotional linking between analyst and patient rather than to content. Post-Bionian analytic theory further develops these concepts. In a field or radically intersubjective perspective, the author emphasizes the shift from an "I/you" perspective to a "we" perspective. The treatment is less about the abstract search for supposed truths and more about the truth being expressed in the process of emotional and affective attunement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

What are the virtues of a well-formed conscience? Thomists consider conscience a matter of practical judgment, which leaves a malformed conscience susceptible to an inability to tell good from evil. Often, this malformed conscience is the effect of laziness, vice, or our own moral ignorance. To ensure a well-formed conscience, one needs all the moral virtues provided by Christ. This article focuses on two of those virtues--memory and docility--and extolls their importance in overcoming moral ignorance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The concept of an intrinsically immoral act is unattractive and widely rejected in modern moral theory, with some even going so far as to suggest that no such thing can exist. Such thinkers insist that two distinct realms exist: the moral law and the individual conscience. However, Veritatis splendor expressly rejects this stance and accurately foresees its incoherence and the threat accepting it poses to the credibility of Catholic moral teaching. This article examines the writings of Thomas Aquinas as well as several other important church documents to show that personal conscience cannot be separated from the objective moral law. Background: Temporomandibular disorders and somatization have shown interrelation in many studies. The physical and psychological factors which contributed to the occurrence and relation of both conditions are yet to be determined. Objectives: The personality traits, coping styles and psychological distress of young adults with temporomandibular disorder (TMD) and somatic symptoms were characterized together with the determination of psychological risk factors for TMDs, somatization and combined conditions. Methods: Participants were recruited from university‐attending young adults. TMD and somatic symptoms were appraised with the short‐form Fonseca Anamnestic Index and Patient Health Questionnaire‐15. Psychological variables were assessed with the Big Five Personality Inventory‐10, Brief‐COPE Inventory and Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales‐21. Data were evaluated using chi‐squared/non‐parametric tests and logistic regression analyses (α =.05). Results: Among the 507 participants (mean age 22.2 ± 1.5 years), 46.4% reported no TMD/somatic symptoms (NS) while 7.5%, 34.5% and 11.6% had TMDs only (TS), somatization only (SS) and combined TMDs‐somatization (CS), respectively. Significant differences in conscientiousness (NS > SS), agreeableness (NS, TS > CS; NS > SS), dysfunctional coping, general distress, depression, anxiety and stress (CS ≥ SS > NS) were discerned. Multivariate analyses indicated that the odds of TS were increased by anxiety (OR = 1.10; 95% CI = 1.01–1.21), while the odds of SS/CS were affected by anxiety (OR = 1.15; 95% CI = 1.06–1.25/OR = 1.34; 95% CI = 0.19–1.52) and problem‐focused coping (OR = 0.71; 95% CI = 0.56–0.89/OR = 0.55; 95% CI = 0.39–0.78). Conclusion: Though individuals with TMDs and somatization have dissimilar psychological profiles, anxiety constantly increased their likelihood. Problem‐focused coping strategies may help alleviate psychosocial and physical stressors associated with TMDs and somatization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Throughout the 20th century, new religious movements (NRMs) emerged within established religions. Within Catholicism, these NRMs are known as new ecclesial movements and communities. A significant number of founders of these Catholic NRMs have been reported and found guilty of various types of abuses, including sexual abuse, abuse of power, abuse of conscience, and spiritual abuses. This article examines the repercussions of these scandalous behaviors on the foundations and institutions established by the accused founders. Firstly, we investigate how contemporary Catholic communities employ interpretations provided by traditional congregations regarding their founders in the postcouncil era. They utilize these interpretations to legitimize the charismatic founders of their respective movements. Secondly, we assess the feasibility of disentangling the accomplishments of these communities from the shadow cast by their controversial originators. Our findings advocate for the contextualization of works authored by individuals under scrutiny. This approach is presented as a more constructive and effective alternative to wholesale dismissal. This article considered the correlation between freedom, conscience, and self-fulfillment. The analysis began with the properties of human action and how action differs from happening. The primary theme was an exposition of freedom which lies at the root of “man-acts.” The fundamental meaning of freedom is self-dependence, but there is a deeper meaning. Freedom is independence from the objects of choice that is achieved by rising above oneself (vertical transcendence) to choose the bonum honestum, the true good that fulfills the self. Freedom, therefore, ultimately depends on truth and especially on moral truth that is apprehended by conscience. Conscience transforms that normative truth into concrete duties that objectivize the bona honesta. Only when someone follows a moral duty understood and accepted as such can he reach the summit of freedom and authentic self-determination.

Teacher care in the university setting is crucial for the academic, emotional, and social development of students, encompassing moral virtues such as compassion and professional competence. The students’ perception of teacher care directly relates to their well-being and active participation in learning. Despite the recognized importance of teacher care, there is a lack of adequate instruments to measure it, especially in specific cultural and educational contexts like Peru. The aim of this research is to develop and assess the psychometric properties of a scale measuring student perception of teacher care in the Peruvian university context, to provide a valid and reliable tool for future research and educational practices. An instrumental study was conducted with 910 university students aged between 18 and 50 years (M = 20.2, SD = 3.45). The Student Perception of Teacher Care Scale (SPTCS) was used, divided into five dimensions (Compassion, Competence, Confidentiality, Trust, and Awareness). Exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory (CFA) factor analyses were conducted to evaluate the scale’s internal structure, along with reliability analyses and measurement invariance across genders. The EFA identified a four-factor structure reflecting the dimensions of Confidentiality and Trust, Competence, Awareness, and Compassion. The CFA confirmed this structure with good fit indices for four-factor models, which was then adjusted to a five-factor model, one of which is a second-order factor (χ2 = 720.727, df = 369, CFI = 0.951, TLI = 0.946, RMSEA = 0.046, and SRMR = 0.032). Internal reliability was high (α and ω > 0.9 for all factors). Measurement invariance was established across genders, allowing for valid comparisons between men and women. It is concluded that the Student Perception of Teacher Care Scale proves to be a valid and reliable instrument for measuring teacher care in the Peruvian university context. The results emphasize the multidimensionality of teacher care and its significance for the educational environment and student experience. This study contributes to educational research and teaching practice, offering a means to assess and improve caring relationships in higher education.

The FBI report also indicates that the agents, while assuring Ed they were "not associating [him] with any responsibility for Theodore's actions", did warn him that, given his plans for an Air Force career, his brother's refusal to cooperate with FBI investigators was "a matter in which he might have considerable concern." FEATURES IN APRIL 1950, THREE MONTHS BEFORE JULIUS AND ETHEL Rosenberg were arrested as Soviet atomic spies, FBI director J. Edgar Hoover began chasing a bigger fish: the physics wunderkind Theodore Alvin Hall. Joan recalled, "Ted sort of smiled and said he'd been questioned by the FBI about spying, and Ed responded that he'd also been questioned about Ted spying." "Ted said he'd been questioned by the FBI… and Ed responded he'd also been questioned about Ted spying.". [Extracted from the article]
