204. Diversity of Botryosphaeriaceae Species Associated with Chinese Hickory Tree (Carya cathayensis) Trunk Cankers

Abstract: Tree trunk cankers represent serious fungal diseases that pose significant threats to Chinese hickory trees (Carya cathayensis). To characterize the pathogen diversity associated with this disease, tissues were collected between 2016 and 2018 from the primary Chinese hickory plantation regions. A total of 97 cultures were isolated from trees in six towns (Longgang, Qingliangfeng, Changhua, Tuankou, Taiyang Town, and Lin’an urban area) within the Linan district, where 60% of Chinese hickory tree yields originate. The isolated cultures caused cankers on Chinese hickory tree branches, but infections did not occur on fruits or leaves under tested conditions. Combined morphological observations and phylogenetic analysis of multiple genes (ITS, β-tubulin, and EF) indicated that five Botryosphaeriaceae species were recovered, including 89 isolates of Botryosphaeria dothidea, 4 isolates of Botryosphaeriaceae fabicerciana, 1 isolate of Botryosphaeriaceae qingyuanensis, 1 isolate of Botryosphaeriaceae corticis, and two isolates of Lasiodiplodia theobromae. B. dothidea was the most prevalent, and this is the first report of B. corticis, B. qingyuanensis, and L. theobromae infections in Chinese hickory trees. We investigated the mycelial growth, spore germination, and pathogenicity of these species at different temperatures. L. theobromae grew the fastest and B. cortices grew the slowest on potato dextrose agar. The optimum temperature of spore germination for all species was 30°C. L. theobromae was the most virulent species, followed by B. dothidea and B. qingyuanensis, then B. fabicerciana, and finally B. cortices. These new insights into fungal pathogen diversity provide critical new information to understand and manage tree trunk cankers of Chinese hickory.

Abstract: Based on a data sample of (448.1±2.9)×106 ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider, the branching fraction of ψ(3686)→ΛΛ¯ω is measured to be (3.30±0.34(stat)±0.29(syst))×10−5 for the first time. In addition, the Λω (or Λ¯ω) invariant mass spectra is studied and the potential presence of excited Λ states has been investigated.

Abstract: Background Liver transplantation is frequently lifesaving for people living with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). However, patients are waitlisted for liver transplant (LT) according to the MELD-Na score, which may not accurately reflect the burden of living with PSC. Purpose We sought to describe and analyze the clinical trajectory for patients with PSC referred for LT, in a mixed deceased donor/live donor transplant programme. Method This was a retrospective cohort study from November 2012 to December 2019 including all patients with PSC referred for assessment at the University Health Network Liver Transplant Clinic. Patients who required multiorgan transplant or re-transplantation were excluded. Liver symptoms, hepatobiliary malignancy, MELD-Na progression, and death were abstracted from chart review. Competing Risk analysis was used for timing of LT, transplant type, and death. Result(s) Of 172 PSC patients assessed, 144 (84%) were listed, of whom 106/144 (74%) were transplanted. Mean age was 47.6 years and 66% were male. During follow-up through to 2021, 23/144 (16%) were removed from the waitlist due to infection, clinical deterioration, liver-related mortality or new cancer; 3 had clinical improvement. At the time of listing, 118/144 (81.95%) had a potential Living Donor (pLD) of whom 94 were transplanted: 64 live donor and 30 deceased donor. Patients with pLD had 79% lower mortality (p Conclusion(s) In a high-volume North American liver transplant centre, most patients with PSC assessed for transplant were listed and subsequently transplanted. However, this was a consequence of patients engaging in live donor transplantation. Our findings support the concern from patients with PSC that MELD-Na allocation does not adequately address their needs. Abstract: By analyzing 4.48 × 108 ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector, we observe the decays χ cJ → nK S 0 Λ ¯ $$ {nK}_S^0\overline{\Lambda} $$ + c.c. (J = 0, 1, 2) for the first time, via the radiative transition ψ(3686) → γχ cJ . The branching fractions are determined to be (6.65 ± 0.26stat ± 0.41syst) × 10 −4, (1.66 ± 0.12stat ± 0.12syst) × 10 −4, and (3.58 ± 0.16stat ± 0.23syst) × 10 −4 for J = 0, 1, and 2, respectively.

Abstract: CIC-DUX4 sarcoma (CDS) is a highly aggressive and metastatic small round type of predominantly pediatric sarcoma driven by a fusion oncoprotein comprising the transcriptional repressor Capicua (CIC) fused to the C-terminal transcriptional activation domain of DUX4. CDS rapidly develops resistance to chemotherapy, thus novel specific therapies are greatly needed. We demonstrate that CIC-DUX4 requires P300/CBP to induce histone H3 acetylation, activate its targets, and drive oncogenesis. We describe the synthetic route to a selective and highly potent P300/CBP inhibitor named iP300w and related stereoisomers, and find that iP300w efficiently suppresses CIC-DUX4 transcriptional activity and reverses CIC-DUX4 induced acetylation. iP300w is active at 100-fold lower concentrations than related stereoisomers or A-485. At low doses, iP300w shows specificity to CDS cancer cell lines, rapidly inducing cell cycle arrest and preventing growth of established CDS xenograft tumors when delivered in vivo. The effectiveness of iP300w to inactivate CIC-DUX4 highlights a promising therapeutic opportunity for CDS.

Abstract: The creep strength enhanced martensitic steels are key material for the main power generating units in ultra-supercritical plants. Studies on the evaluation of their creep rupture life show there is an overestimation of rupture life after long-term creep, which is known as premature failure. However, the microstructural origin of the premature failure remains unclear. Here in this study, we have carefully investigated the microstructural transformations and their influences on creep rupture behavior, showing that the evolution of martensite and M23C6 carbides as well as Laves phase are responsible for the premature failure. By using multi-step TTP-LMP method, we confirmed a three-stage creep rupture behavior under different stress regions. Further quantitative analysis showed that the coarsening of M23C6 carbides and recovery of martensite exert equal and dominant effects on the premature failure in the medium stress region, while precipitation and coarsening of Laves phase are responsible for the premature failure in the low stress region.

218. FKBP5 inhibitors modulate alcohol drinking and trauma-related behaviors in a model of comorbid post-traumatic stress and alcohol use disorder

Abstract: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) leads to enhanced alcohol drinking and development of alcohol use disorder (AUD). Identifying shared neural mechanisms might help discover new therapies for PTSD/AUD. Here, we employed a rat model of comorbid PTSD/AUD to evaluate compounds that inhibit FK506-binding protein 51 (FKBP5), a co-chaperone modulator of glucocorticoid receptors implicated in stress-related disorders. Male and female rats received a familiar avoidance-based shock stress followed by voluntary alcohol drinking. We then assessed trauma-related behaviors through sleep bout cycles, hyperarousal, fear overgeneralization, and irritability. To evaluate the role of stress and alcohol history on the sensitivity to FKBP5 inhibitors, in two separate studies, we administered two FKBP5 inhibitors, benztropine (Study 1) or SAFit2 (Study 2). FKBP5 inhibitors were administered on the last alcohol drinking session and prior to each trauma-related behavioral assessment. We also measured plasma corticosterone to assess the actions of FKBP5 inhibitors after familiar shock stress and alcohol drinking. Benztropine reduced alcohol preference in stressed males and females, while aggressive bouts were reduced in benztropine-treated stressed females. During hyperarousal, benztropine reduced several startle response outcomes across stressed males and females. Corticosterone was reduced in benztropine-treated stressed males. The selective FKBP5 inhibitor, SAFit2, reduced alcohol drinking in stressed males but not females, with no differences in irritability. Importantly, SAFit2 decreased fear overgeneralization in stressed males and females. SAFit2 also reduced corticosterone across stressed males and females. Neither FKBP5 inhibitor changed sleep bout structure. These findings indicate that FKBP5 inhibitors modulate stress-related alcohol drinking and partially modulate trauma-related behaviors. This work supports the hypothesis that targeting FKBP5 may alleviate PTSD/AUD comorbidity.

Abstract: A search for a massless dark photon γ′ is conducted using 4.5 fb−1 of e+e− collision data collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.600 and 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector at BEPCII. No significant signal is observed, and the upper limit on the branching fraction B(Λc+→pγ′) is determined to be 8.0×10−5 at 90% confidence level.

224. Flame acceleration and transition to detonation in a pre-/main- chamber combustion system

Abstract: Numerical simulations are performed to study the mechanism of deflagration to detonation transition (DDT) in a pre-/main-chamber combustion system with a stoichiometric ethylene–oxygen mixture. A Godunov algorithm, fifth-order in space, and third-order in time, is used to solve the fully compressible Navier–Stokes equations on a dynamically adapting mesh. A single-step, calibrated chemical diffusive model described by Arrhenius kinetics is used for energy release and conservation between the fuel and the product. The two-dimensional simulation shows that a laminar flame grows in the pre-chamber and then develops into a jet flame as it passes through the orifice. A strong shock forms immediately ahead of the flame, reflecting off the walls and interacting with the flame front. The shock–flame interactions are crucial for the development of flame instabilities, which trigger the subsequent flame development. The DDT arises due to a shock-focusing mechanism, where multiple shocks collide at the flame front. A chemical explosive mode analysis (CEMA) criterion is developed to study the DDT ignition mode. Preliminary one-dimensional computations for a laminar propagating flame, a fast flame deflagration, and a Chapman–Jouguet detonation are conducted to demonstrate the validity of CEMA on the chemical-diffusive model, as well as to determine the proper conditioning value for CEMA diagnostic. The two-dimensional analysis with CEMA indicates that the DDT initiated by the shock-focusing mechanism can form a strong thermal expansion region at the flame front that features large positive eigenvalues for the chemical explosive mode and dominance of the local autoignition mode. Thus, the CEMA criterion proposed in this study provides a robust diagnostic for identifying autoignition-supported DDT, of which the emergence of excessive local autoignition mode is found to be a precursor. The effect of grid size, initial temperature, and orifice size are then evaluated, and results show that although the close-chamber DDT is highly stochastic, the detonation initiation mechanism remains robust.

226. The mitochondrial RNA granule modulates manganese-dependent cell toxicity

Abstract: Prolonged manganese exposure causes manganism, a neurodegenerative movement disorder. The identity of adaptive and non-adaptive cellular processes targeted by manganese remains mostly unexplored. Here we study mechanisms engaged by manganese in genetic cellular models known to increase susceptibility to manganese exposure, the plasma membrane manganese efflux transporter SLC30A10 and the mitochondrial Parkinson’s gene PARK2. We found that SLC30A10 and PARK2 mutations as well as manganese exposure compromised the mitochondrial RNA granule as well as mitochondrial transcript processing. These RNA granule defects led to impaired assembly and function of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. Notably, cells that survived a cytotoxic manganese challenge had impaired RNA granule function, thus suggesting that this granule phenotype was adaptive. CRISPR gene editing of subunits of the mitochondrial RNA granule, FASTKD2 or DHX30, as well as pharmacological inhibition of mitochondrial transcription-translation, were protective rather than deleterious for survival of cells acutely exposed to manganese. Similarly, adult Drosophila mutants with defects in the mitochondrial RNA granule component scully were safeguarded from manganese-induced mortality. We conclude that the downregulation of the mitochondrial RNA granule function is a protective mechanism for acute metal toxicity.Significance StatementMutations in the manganese efflux transporter SLC30A10 and the mitochondrial Parkinson’s gene PARK2, cause neurodegeneration and increased susceptibility to toxic manganese exposure. Thus, molecular processes affected in both mutants could offer insight into fundamental mechanisms conferring susceptibility or resilience to environmental and genetic factors associated with neurodegeneration. Here we report that SLC30A10 and PARK2 mutations compromise an understudied structure, the mitochondrial RNA granule, which is required for processing polycistronic mitochondrial RNAs. Cells and Drosophila lacking mitochondrial RNA granule components were resistant to manganese exposure. We conclude that the downregulation of the mitochondrial RNA granule function is an adaptive mechanism for cells exposed to manganese.

Abstract: The diagnosis of coronary artery disease depends on a comprehensive assessment including morphological and functional information. Coronary CT angiography derived fractional flow reserve (CT-FFR) could obtain morphological and functional information from a single coronary CT angiography (CCTA) scan, achieving a "one-stop" assessment of coronary artery disease. CT-FFR is a non-invasive imaging examination to assess the hemodynamic changes of focal coronary lesions and suitable for patients with moderate to severe coronary artery stenosis or mild coronary artery stenosis combined with other high-risk characteristics, to assist in determining whether the lesions cause myocardial ischemia, and to guide clinical decisions and predict the risk of cardiovascular events. The application of CT-FFR relies on satisfied image quality of CCTA, and requires the cooperation of radiologists, clinicians and patients. 228. Synthetic mimetics assigned a major role to IFNAR2 in type I interferon signaling

Abstract: Type I interferons (IFNs) are potent inhibitors of viral replication. Here, we reformatted the natural murine and human type I interferon-α/β receptors IFNAR1 and IFNAR2 into fully synthetic biological switches. The transmembrane and intracellular domains of natural IFNAR1 and IFNAR2 were conserved, whereas the extracellular domains were exchanged by nanobodies directed against the fluorescent proteins Green fluorescent protein (GFP) and mCherry. Using this approach, multimeric single-binding GFP-mCherry ligands induced synthetic IFNAR1/IFNAR2 receptor complexes and initiated STAT1/2 mediated signal transduction via Jak1 and Tyk2. Homodimeric GFP and mCherry ligands showed that IFNAR2 but not IFNAR1 homodimers were sufficient to induce STAT1/2 signaling. Transcriptome analysis revealed that synthetic murine type I IFN signaling was highly comparable to IFNα4 signaling. Moreover, replication of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) in a cell culture-based viral infection model using MC57 cells was significantly inhibited after stimulation with synthetic ligands. Using intracellular deletion variants and point mutations, Y510 and Y335 in murine IFNAR2 were verified as unique phosphorylation sites for STAT1/2 activation, whereas the other tyrosine residues in IFNAR1 and IFNAR2 were not involved in STAT1/2 phosphorylation. Comparative analysis of synthetic human IFNARs supports this finding. In summary, our data showed that synthetic type I IFN signal transduction is originating from IFNAR2 rather than IFNAR1.

232. Plasma metabolite changes in anestrous dairy cows with negative energy balance identified using 1H NMR technology

Abstract: The objective of the present study was to investigate the different plasma metabolites between anestrus and estrus postpartum dairy cows and to provide a theoretical basis for prevention of anestrus in dairy farm cows. In the experiment, one hundred and sixty-seven Holstein dairy cows were selected with similar age and parity. According to the concentration of β-hydroxybutyric acid, non-esterified fatty acids and glucose in plasma during 14 to 21 days in milk, all dairy cows were determined as having a status of energy balance. According to the results of clinical symptom, rectal and B ultrasound examination at 60 to 90 days postpartum, these cows were divided into twenty estrus and twenty-four anestrus group, other dairy cows were removed. 1H nuclear magnetic resonance technology was utilized to detect the plasma metabolites changes and screen different plasma metabolites between anestrus and estrus cows. Ten different metabolites including alanine, glutamic acid, asparagine, creatine, choline, phosphocholine, glycerophosphocholine, low-density lipoprotein, and very-low-density lipoprotein were significantly decreased in anestrous cows compared with estrous cows. Metabolic pathway analyses indicated that differential metabolites were primarily involved in amino acid and glycerophospholipid metabolism. These metabolites and their enrichment pathways indicate that reduced steroid hormone synthesis precursors result in lower levels of estradiol and progesterone and cause anestrus in negative energy balance. These data provide a better understanding of the changes that may affect estrus of postpartum dairy cows at NEB status and lay the ground for further research.

233. A223 THE CHAIR STAND TEST IS A RELIABLE FRAILTY METRIC FOR PREDICTING WAITLIST MORBIDITY AND MORTALITY IN PATIENTS WITH CIRRHOSIS

Abstract: Background Frailty is defined as a clinical state of increased vulnerability to health and age associated stressors. The liver frailty index (LFI), composed of grip strength, chair stand and balance testing, is an accepted predictor of morbidity and mortality in cirrhosis. With the need for COVID-19 related social distancing, many appointments are being carried out virtually. The chair stand subcomponent of the LFI has the potential to be evaluated virtually, with a high reliability as compared to in-person testing noted in other disease populations. Aims To determine if the chair stand test is an independent predictor of morbidity and mortality in patients with cirrhosis. Methods 822 adult patients with cirrhosis were prospectively enrolled from five centers (3 in Canada, 1 in the United States, and 1 in India). Inclusion criteria included adult patients with cirrhosis. 787 of these patients completed a chair stand test at baseline, measured as the time (seconds) a patient takes to rise from sitting with their arms folded across their chest five times (measured in-person). The times were divided into 3 categories: >15 seconds, between 10 and 15 seconds, and 15 seconds category. Primary outcome was all-cause mortality. Secondary outcome was unplanned all-cause hospital admission. Fine-Gray proportional hazard regression models were used to evaluate the association between the chair stand time and the outcomes. We adjusted for baseline age, sex, and MELD score and accounted for liver transplantation as a competing risk. Cumulative incidence functions were used to create a graphical representation of the survival analysis. Results Patients were divided into three groups: group 1, 15 seconds (n = 221). Mortality was increased in group 3 in comparison to group 1 (HR 3.21, 95% CI: 2.16–4.78, p Conclusions A time to complete 5 chair stands of >15 seconds predicts morbidity and mortality in patients with cirrhosis. 236. Shear Fracture Criterion of Advanced High-Strength Steel Based on Stress Triaxiality and Equivalent Strain

Abstract: Advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) is increasingly used in the automotive industry due to its higher strength and lower weight. The traditional forming limit criterion cannot accurately predict the unique shear fracture of AHSS, so great efforts have been made to develop failure criteria that can predict shear fracture. In this paper, a series of tensile and shear tests for four steel sheets of AHSS are designed, the stress triaxiality and equivalent strain to fracture are solved, and the correlation between them and the performance parameters of steel sheets K and n is studied. In order to study the relationship between stress triaxiality and equivalent strain to fracture in the range of low-stress triaxiality, the Hill'48 orthotropic model and modified Mohr–Coulomb (MMC) fracture model were used to establish tensile and shear fracture models of four dual-phase sheets of steel, simulating and studying the plastic fracture of AHSS. Solving the relevant parameters enriches the stress triaxiality of the four steel types, establishes the relationship between the stress triaxiality and the equivalent strain to fracture, and verifies its correctness through tensile and bending tests and simulations. The results show MMC can accurately predict the fracture of these four dual-phase steels, and the quantitative relationship between stress triaxiality and equivalent strain to fracture of the four dual-phase steels in the low-stress triaxiality range 0–0.3 is similar, which can be established and expressed by the performance parameters of each steel type.

Abstract: The study of the Cabibbo-favored semileptonic decay Λ_{c}^{+}→Λe^{+}ν_{e} is reported using a 4.5 fb^{-1} data sample of e^{+}e^{-} annihilations collected at center-of-mass energies ranging from 4.600 GeV to 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The branching fraction of the decay is measured to be B(Λ_{c}^{+}→Λe^{+}ν_{e})=(3.56±0.11_{stat}±0.07_{syst})%, which is the most precise measurement to date. Furthermore, we perform an investigation of the internal dynamics in Λ_{c}^{+}→Λe^{+}ν_{e}. We provide the first direct comparisons of the differential decay rate and form factors with those predicted from lattice quantum chromodynamics (LQCD) calculations. Abstract: The intraplate Hawaiian-Emperor Seamount Chain has long been considered a hotspot track generated by the motion of the Pacific plate over a deep mantle plume, and an ideal feature therefore for studies of volcanic structure, magma supply, plume-crust interaction, flexural loading, and upper mantle rheology. Despite their importance as a major component of the chain, the Emperor Seamounts have been relatively little studied. In this paper, we present the results of an active-source wide-angle reflection and refraction experiment conducted along an ocean-bottom-seismograph (OBS) line oriented perpendicular to the seamount chain, crossing Jimmu guyot. The tomographic P wave velocity model, using ∼20,000 travel times from 26 OBSs, suggests that there is a high-velocity (>6.0 km/s) intrusive core within the edifice, and the extrusive-to-intrusive ratio is estimated to be ∼2.5, indicating that Jimmu was built mainly by extrusive processes. The total volume for magmatic material above the top of the oceanic crust is ∼5.3 × 104 km3, and the related volume flux is ∼0.96 m3/s during the formation of Jimmu. Under volcanic loading, the ∼5.3-km-thick oceanic crust is depressed by ∼3.8 km over a broad region. Using the standard relationships between Vp and density, the velocity model is verified by gravity modeling, and plate flexure modeling indicates an effective elastic thickness (Te) of ∼14 km. Finally, we find no evidence for large-scale magmatic underplating beneath the pre-existing crust.

Abstract: Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) involves complex immunomodulatory interactions between pathogens,biomaterials,and hosts,and correlates with alterations in the ratio of immune cells as well as in the concentration of immune checkpoint molecules.Prosthesis,biofilm,microorganisms,and host constitute a special and complex immune microenvironment.Fully studying the characteristics of immune microenvironment and potential targets of immunotherapy in orthopedic implant-associated infections are expected to provide a new direction for clinical treatment of PJI. 242. The role and contribution of magnetic fields, characterized via their magnetic flux, to the statistical structuring of the solar atmosphere

Abstract: The anomalous heating of the solar upper atmosphere is one of the eight key problems in modern astronomy. Moreover, the stratification of the solar atmosphere is an outstanding key-problem in solar physics. In this study, a hot butterfly-like pattern is found to run through the chromosphere to the corona lying right on top of the magnetic butterfly pattern of sunspots in the photosphere. We thus propose to introduce the term butterfly body to describe the butterfly diagram in the 3-dimensional atmosphere. Besides, we discuss the so-called polar brightening in different layers. It is found to be statistically in anti-phase with the solar cycle in the photosphere and the chromosphere, while in phase with the solar cycle in the corona. Accordingly, we describe the role and relationship of solar magnetic elements of different magnetic flux strengths to explain the statistical structuring of the solar atmosphere with the butterfly body over the solar cycle.

Abstract: Here we present a detailed study of the broadband noise in the power density spectra of the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070 during the hard state of its 2018 outburst, using Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope observations. The broadband noise shows two main humps, which might separately correspond to variability from a variable disk and two Comptonization regions. We fitted the two humps with multiple Lorentzian functions and studied the energy-dependent properties of each component up to 90–150 keV and their evolution with spectral changes. The lowest-frequency component is considered as the subharmonic of the quasiperiodic oscillation component and shows a different energy dependence compared with other broadband noise components. We found that although the fractional rms of all the broadband noise components mainly decreases with the energy, their rms spectra are different in shape. Above ∼20–30 keV, the characteristic frequencies of these components increase sharply with the energy, meaning that the high-energy component is more variable on short timescales. Our results suggest that the hot inner flow in MAXI J1820+070 is likely to be inhomogeneous. We propose a geometry with a truncated accretion disk and two Comptonization regions.

246. Clinical effect of unilateral balloon infusion of low dose bone cement in PKP for osteoporotic thoracolumbar compression fractures in the elderly

Abstract: The study was undertaken to determine the clinical effectiveness of percutaneous kyphoplasty (PKP) with unilateral balloon infusion of low dose of bone cement for treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs) in the elderly.A retrospective study was carried out. A total of 36 patients with OVCFs treated by PKP from August 2019 and August 2020 were included. Patients were divided into two groups according to the amount of bone cement infused into the vertebral body. The amount of cement in conventional-dose group was 3.5-6.0 mL and the amount of cement in small-dose group was 1.8-3.0 mL. Pain relief before and after the operation were evaluated, and the leakage of bone cement in the two groups was also observed.Two groups of patients have obtained a good clinical efficacy. Pain has significant differences before and after the operation (p0.05). More importantly, compared with conventional-dose group, small-dose group has lower bone cement leakage rate (p0.05).PKP with small-dose bone cement infusion can obtain the same clinical effects of conventional-dose, but the incidence of bone cement leakage is lower and safe.

Abstract: The perfect absorption of electromagnetic waves has promoted many applications, including photovoltaics, radar cloaking, and molecular detection. Unlike conventional methods of critical coupling that require asymmetric boundaries or coherent perfect absorption that require multiple coherent incident beams, here we demonstrate single-beam perfect absorption in an on-chip cavity magnonic device without breaking its boundary symmetry. By exploiting magnon-mediated interference between two internal channels, both reflection and transmission of our device can be suppressed to zero, resulting in magnon-induced nearly perfect absorption (MIPA). Such interference can be tuned by the strength and direction of an external magnetic field, thus showing versatile controllability. Furthermore, the same multi-channel interference responsible for MIPA also produces level attraction (LA)-like hybridization between a cavity magnon polariton mode and a cavity photon mode, demonstrating that LA-like hybridization can be surprisingly realized in a coherently coupled system., Perfect absorption can be obtained for a single port device, or a device with multiple incident beams, but for multiport devices, the absorption is limited to around 50%. In this work, Rao et al. overcome this limitation, demonstrating near perfect absorption in a two port cavity magnon system.

248. NO3 reactivity during a summer period in a temperate forest below and above the canopy

Abstract: We present direct measurements of biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC)-induced nitrate radical (NO3) reactivity (kVOC) through the diel cycle in the suburban, temperate forest of Rambouillet near Paris (France). The data were obtained in a 6-week summer period in 2022 as part of the Atmospheric ChemistRy Of the Suburban foreSt (ACROSS) campaign. kVOC was measured in a small (700 m2) clearing mainly at a height of 5.5 m above ground level but also at 40 m (for 5 d and nights). At nighttime, mean values (and 25th–75th percentile ranges) of knightVOC(5.5m) = (0.24-0.06+0.32) s−1 and knightVOC(40m) = (0.016-0.007+0.018) s−1 indicate a significant vertical gradient and low NO3 reactivity above the canopy, whereas knightVOC(5.5 m) showed peak values of up to 2 s−1 close to the ground. The strong vertical gradient in NO3 reactivity could be confirmed by measurements between 0 and 24 m on one particular night characterized by a strong temperature inversion and is a result of the decoupling of air masses aloft from the ground- and canopy-level sources of BVOCs (and nitric oxide, NO). No strong vertical gradient was observed in the mean daytime NO3 reactivity, with kdayVOC(5.5m) = (0.12 ± 0.04) s−1 for the entire campaign and kdayVOC(40m) = (0.07 ± 0.02) s−1 during the 5 d period. Within the clearing, the fractional contribution of VOCs to the total NO3 loss rate coefficient (ktot, determined by photolysis, reaction with NO and VOCs) was 80 %–90 % during the night and ∼ 50 % during the day. In terms of chemical losses of α-pinene below canopy height in the clearing, we find that at nighttime hydroxyl radicals (OH) and ozone (O3) dominate, with NO3 contributing “only” 17 %, which decreases further to 8.5 % during the day. Based on measured OH, measured O3, and calculated NO3 concentrations, the chemical lifetime of BVOCs at noon is about 1 h and is likely to be longer than timescales of transport out of the canopy (typically of the order of minutes), thus significantly reducing the importance of daytime in-canopy processing. Clearly, in forested regions where sufficient nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide (NOx) is available, the role of NO3 and OH as initiators of BVOC oxidation is not strictly limited to nighttime and daytime, respectively, as often implied in e.g. atmospheric chemistry textbooks.
