Abstract

A new measurement of the ratio of the CP-violating amplitudes for $K_{L} \to 2\pi^{0}$ and $K_{L} \to \pi^{+}\pi^{-}$ is reported. The measured value for $\Re = |\eta_{00} / \eta_{ +-}|^{2}$ is $0.9878 \pm 0.0026 \pm 0.0030$, where the first error is the statistical uncertainty and the second is the estimate of the systematic uncertainty. This gives a value for the parameter describing direct CP violation: $\Re$ $\epsilon'/\epsilon = (2.0 \pm 0.7) \times 10^{−3}$ .

Abstract

This paper presents the results of a broad, transversal, observational survey on the social cost of female urinary incontinence in the general female population, resident in the ASL3-Monza area. In this population, in an 18- 65 year old age group, the prevalence of U.I. observed is 28.5% (LIFE cases) and 18.6% (YEAR cases). The total number of incontinent women in the ASL3-Monza area and in the Lombardy Region can be estimated as follows: - ASL3-Monza 125,288 “LIFE” cases, 81,767 (18.6% of 439,609) “YEAR” cases. - Lombardy Region 1,119,480 “LIFE” cases, 730,608 (18.6% of 3,928,709) “YEAR” cases. In the light of the data collected, we can estimate that in the Lombardy Region and in the ASL3-Monza area, at least 379,600 (52% of 730,608) and 42,518 (52% of 81,767) incontinent women use protection and 175,200 (24% of 730,608) and 19,624 (24% of 81,767) consider using a pad to be the only useful solution to the problem. The “estimated” mean/annual cost per woman in an incontinent population with characteristics similar to those of the general female population of the ASL3-Monza is € 358,03, for a mean/life cost per woman of € 11.099,20.When there is no effective treatment of the symptom, we can estimate the following total cost/life in the ASL3-Monza area to be: 65,414 x 31 x € 358,03 = € 726.025.407. If the symptom disappears and the treatment is effective, this is also an advantage, apart from the obvious requirement for public health related to it, from a strictly pharmacological-economic point of view. The estimated total/life cost for the treatment (with the most effective medical, rehabilitative and/or surgical therapy available today) of a sample of 1,000 incontinent women of the ASL3- Monza area is significatively lower than the total cost/life expected in the case of persistence and “assistance” of the symptom: € 4.502.812,10 vs. € 23.451.270,02. Despite the methodological limits of a pilot study (single centre collection of data, limited samples, analysis of “theoretical” populations), from the data collected it appears clear that the more incisive and determined the strategy of information and education, and the fuller and earlier the diagnosis, the more significative the social- economic, as well as the psycho-social saving.

Abstract

The construction and the operation of a large-area transition radiation detector (TRD) for the NA31 experiment at CERN are described. The TRD incorporates several novel features for stabilizing the detector response. The density of the gas mixture (xenon+helium+methane) in the detection chambers is matched to the carbon dioxide gas in the surrounding radiators by tuning the helium concentration to avoid a hydrostatic pressure difference, which would deform the chamber walls. The chamber pressure is continuously regulated by computer control to maintain it to within 1 μbar of the radiator pressure. The gas gain of each of the four chambers is regulated to better than 0.2% by changing the high voltage under computer control, using the pulse-height spectra of 16 109 Ca sources mounted on the chambers. The results of performance studies are described. The detector has a pion efficiency of 98.7% with an electron rejection of a factor of 10.

Abstract

The phases of the CP-violating amplitudes in K0→π+π− and K0→2π0 decays, φ+−=46.9°±2.2° and φ00=47.1°±2.8°, have been measured in the same experiment, and a direct comparison gives the phase difference φ00−φ+−=0.2°±2.9°. This result leads to an upper limit on possible CPT violation in the K0 mass matrix, of |(m K 0 −m K 0 )/m K 0 | −18 at the 95% confidence level and is the most stringent test of the equality of particle and antiparticle masses.

209. Nitrogen dynamics during till and no-till pasture restoration sequences in Rondônia, Brazil.

Abstract

Abstract The clearing of tropical rain forest in the Amazon basin has created large areas of cattle pasture that are now declining in productivity. Practices adopted by ranchers to restore productivity to degraded pastures have the potential to alter soil N availability and gaseous N losses from soils. We examined how soil inorganic N pools, net N mineralization and net nitrification rates, nitrification potential and NO and N2O emissions from soils of a degraded pasture responded to the following restoration treatments: (1) soil tillage followed by replanting of grass and fertilization, (2) no-till application of non-selective herbicide, planting of rice, harvest followed by no-till replanting of grass and fertilization, and (3) the same no-till sequence with soybeans instead of rice. Tillage increased soil NH4+ and NO3? pools but NH4+ and NO3? pools remained relatively constant in the control and no-till treatments. Cumulative rates of net N mineralization and net nitrification during the first 6 months after treatment varied widely but were hightest in the tilled treatment. Emissions of NO and N2O fluxes increased with tillage and with N fertilization. There were no clear relationships among rates of N fertilizer application, net N mineralization, net nitrification, NO, N2O and total N oxide emissions. Our results indicate that pasture restoration sequences involving tilling and fertilizing will increase emissions of N oxides, but the magnitude of the increase is likely to differ based on timing of fertilizer application relative to the presence of plants and the magnitude of plant N demand. Abstract

The availability of labile organic C for microbial metabolic processes could be an important factor regulating N 2O emissions from tropical soils. We explored the effects of labile C on the emissions of N 2O from a forest soil in the State of Rondônia in the southwestern quadrant of the Brazilian Amazon. We measured emissions of N 2O from a forest soil after amendments with solutions containing glucose, water only or NO 3 ?. Addition of glucose to the forest soil resulted in very large increases in N 2 additions did not. These results suggest a strong C limitation on N 3 ? additions did not. Abstract

In order to estimate changes in carbon pools and fluxes to the atmosphere, we used Landsat TM data to calculate the extent of areas converted to pasture to different lengths of time in a 100km by 92km area of the southwestern Brazilian Amazon. Image processing and the supervised classification allowed the production of an accurate land cover map including forest and pastures of different ages. Estimates of carbon pools and fluxes to the atmosphere were carried out using the results of Landsat image analysis and published data about carbon stocks in vegetation and soil. The results showed that a large amount of carbon (12 103 g cm2) is released after three years under pasture. From the initial burning and after fifth year under pasture, the system functioned as a source of CO2 to atmosphere. After this period the balance is slightly negative and the amount of CO2 released is lower than the amount released in the initial period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Since CP violation was first observed in the decay of the long-lived neutral kaon into two pions [1], it remains one of the enigmas in particle physics. Whilst CP violation is manifest in neutral kaon decays, the search for CP-violating effects has elsewhere been unsuccessful. In the phenomenology of CP violation in the neutral kaon system [2], the short- and long-lived mass eigenstates are usually defined in terms of the CP eigenstates K1 (CP = + 1) and K2 (CP = - 1) as Ks ≈ K1 + ?K2 and KL ≈ K2 + ?K1. The parameter ? describes CP violation induced by kaon state-mixing. Direct CP violation may also occur in the decay of K2 into two pions with a relative amplitude ?′, which is non-zero in the case of a phase difference between the amplitudes A0 and A2 for the decay into isospin O and 2 states of two pions. Before the present measurement, all experimental results were compatible with ? = 2.27 × 10-3 exp (i 43.70) and with the Superweak Model [3], in which state-mixing is the only source of CP violation and ?′ = 0. In the Standard Model with six weakly interacting quarks [4], direct CP violation as well as state-mixing is introduced by transitions via heavy-quark intermediate states. Based on this, a small, but non-zero, value of ?′ is predicted [5]. To a good approximation, ?′ /? is related to the double ratio R of the relative decay rates of the long- and short-lived neutral kaons into two neutral and two charged pions as Re (?′/?) = 1/6 × (1 - R).

Abstract

It is expected that the number of military and civil aircraft operating supersonically all over the world may remain the same during the next decade. The problem of sonic boom, which has been by-passed for military aircraft through the assignment of specially allocated ranges for supersonic operation, is still with us and is likely to influence the operation of supersonic transport (SST) aircraft, the Concorde and the Tupolev 144. Concorde is still short of reaching the break-even point, despite the large traffic gain registered on the routes to North and South America. The problem is to get overland routes; the difficulties encountered by the UK in the discussions with India and Malaysia for the establishment of a London–Bahrain–Singapore route are well known.Before presenting the effects of the sonic boom on the ecology it may be well to summarize the nature and the main features of this phenomenon.(i) The N-wave signature. A complex body like an aircraft, moving in supersonic flight, generates a pattern of local shock waves which tend to coalesce in two main shock cones, the front (or bow) and tail, as the distance from the aircraft increases. A shock wave is a discontinuity surface for the thermodynamic characteristics of the fluid, the most important being the static pressure jump responsible for the N-shaped pressure signature characteristic of the sonic boom. Abstract

The wide range of values reported for activity of adenylate cyclase (AC) in human skeletal muscle prompted re-evaluation of conditions used for homogenization and assay. Adenylate cyclase activity in the same normal muscle differed with different techniques of homogenization. In pH 7.5 isotonic Tris buffer, basal and catecholamine-activated activities declined rapidly in homogenates kept at 4°C. Loss of basal activity was prevented by addition of a chelator of divalent cations. Loss of response to isoproterenol was prevented by addition of guanylnucleotides. Enzyme activity was maximal at 37°C and pH 7.6. Enzyme activity was lower when theophylline was used to prevent degradation of labelled 3',5' cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cyclic AMP) than when unlabelled cyclic AMP was used to this purpose. Basal activity increased with increased MgCl 2 concentration up to 50 mmol/l, but isoproterenol-activated activity was maximal at 4 mmol/l MgCl 2 . AC was inhibited by exogenous adenosine, but addition of adenosine deaminase to the assay mixture did not increase AC activity. Based upon these observations, standardized procedures of homogenization and assay were devised and used to measure AC activity in muscles of boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy: basal and isoproterenol-stimulated activities were abnormally low.

Abstract

The natural relationship 13C/12C- determined in three soil profiles under grass vegetation indicated a depletion in organic I3C at depth: the 613C was between - 18%0 and - 15%0 in the A horizons and ranged from - 18 to - 22%0 at depth. Previous work showed that in forest soils, where 613C was near - 28%0 in the upper horizon, there was, on the contrary, a relative enrichment of the lower strata. This meant that 6I3C, initially different in the various topsoils, became more equal at depth. Comparison between dark, deep horizons (sombric horizons), which are certainly of illuvial origine, would confirm this: 613C of grassland and a forest sombric horizon were almost equal at around - 22%0. These results might mean that, in natural ecosystems, the isotopic carbon composition of the soil underlying humus would be independent of the vegetation type. This would have practical implications for the use of I3C as a tracer for soil organic matter studies.

Abstract

Guanylate cyclase activity has been studied in muscle of normal subjects and of patients suffering from muscular and neuromuscular diseases. In normal tissue a guanylate cyclase activity was found in both soluble and particulate fractions of homogenate. We found also that the kinetic analysis of the enzyme of soluble differed from that of particulate fraction. A decrease of guanylate cyclase activity in crude homogenate was observed in muscular dystrophies, in neuromuscular atrophies, and in inflammatory forms of muscle disease.

Abstract

Data are presented on the semi-inclusive distributions of rapidities of secondary particles produced in pp collisions at very high energies. The experiment was performed at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). The data given, at centre-of-mass energies of square root s=23 and 62 GeV, include the single-particle distributions and two-particle correlations. The semi-inclusive correlations show pronounced short-range correlation effects which have a width considerably narrower than in the case of inclusive correlations. It is shown that these short-range effects can be understood empirically in terms of three parameters whose energy and multiplicity dependence are studied. The data support the picture of multiparticle production in which clusters of small multiplicity and small dispersion are emitted with subsequent decay into hadrons. (32 refs).

Abstract

The effects of varying independently the inter-dinode voltages of Philips photomultipliers types 56 AVP and 58 AVP on the linearity and maximum gain obtainable are described. It is found that great improuvements are possible over the performances obtainable with the voltage distributions recommended by the manufacturers and that with voltage distributions optimized separately for each tube it is always possible to at least achieve the maximum performances claimed by the manufacturers. The distributions recommended by them do not fulfill these claims.

Abstract

We report results from the analysis of the \(\mbox {$\mathrm {K}^{\pm}$}\rightarrow \pi^{+} \pi^{-} \mathrm{e}^{\pm} \nu\) (\(\mbox {$\mathrm {K}_{\mathrm {e}4}$}\)) decay by the NA48/2 collaboration at the CERN SPS, based on the total statistics of 1.13 million decays collected in 2003–2004. The hadronic form factors in the S- and P-wave and their variation with energy are obtained. The phase difference between the S- and P-wave states of the ππ system is accurately measured and allows a precise determination of \(\mbox {$a_{0}^{0}$}\) and \(\mbox {$a_{0}^{2}$}\), the I = 0 and I = 2 S-wave ππ scattering lengths: \(\mbox {$a_{0}^{0}$}= 0.2220 \pm 0.0128 \mbox {$\mathrm {_{stat}}$}\pm 0.0050 \mbox {$\mathrm {_{syst}}$}\pm 0.0037\mbox {$\mathrm {_{th}}$},\mbox {$a_{0}^{2}$}= -0.0432 \pm 0.0086 \mbox {$\mathrm {_{stat}}$}\pm 0.0034 \mbox {$\mathrm {_{syst}}$}\pm 0.0028\mbox {$\mathrm {_{th}}$}\). Combination of this result with the other NA48/2 measurement obtained in the study of \(\mbox {$\mbox {$\mathrm {K}^{\pm}$}\rightarrow \mbox {$\pi ^{0}$}\mbox {$\pi ^{0}$}\mbox {$\scriptstyle \pi ^{\pm }$}$}\) decays brings an improved determination of \(\mbox {$a_{0}^{0}$}\) and the first precise experimental measurement of \(\mbox {$a_{0}^{2}$}\), providing a stringent test of Chiral Perturbation Theory predictions and lattice QCD calculations. Using constraints based on analyticity and chiral symmetry, even more precise values are obtained: \(\mbox {$a_{0}^{0}$}=0.2196 \pm 0.0028\mbox {$\mathrm {_{stat}}$}\pm 0.0020 \mbox {$\mathrm {_{syst}}$}\) and \(\mbox {$a_{0}^{2}$}= -0.0444 \pm 0.0007 \mbox {$\mathrm {_{stat}}$}\pm 0.0005 \mbox {$\mathrm {_{syst}}$}\pm 0.0008 \mbox {$\mathrm {_{ChPT}}$}\).

Abstract

We report results from a new measurement of the $K_{e4}$ decay $K^{\pm} \rightarrow \pi^{+}\pi^{-}e^{\pm}\nu$ by the NA48/2 collaboration at the CERN SPS, based on a partial sample of more than 670000 $K_{e4}$ decays in both charged modes collected in 2003. The form factors of the hadronic current (F, G, H) and $\pi\pi$ phase difference ($\delta=\delta_{s}-\delta_{p}$) have been measured in ten independent bins of the $\pi\pi$ mass spectrum to investigate the variation. A sizeable acceptance at large $\pi\pi$ mass, a low background and a very good resolution contribute to an improved experimental accuracy, a factor two better than in the previous measurement, when extracting the $\pi\pi$ scattering lengths $a^{0}_{0}$ and $a^{2}_{0}$. Under the assumption of isospin symmetry and using numerical solutions of the Roy equations, the following values are obtained in the plane ($a^{0}_{0}, a^{2}_{0}): a^{0}_{0}=0.233 \pm 0.016_{stat} \pm 0.007_{syst}, a^{2}_{0}=-0.0471 \pm 0.011_{stat} \pm 0.004_{syst}$. The presence of potentially large isospin effects is also considered and will allow comparison with precise predictions from Chiral Perturbation Theory.

Abstract

Two standard voltage distributions, differing from those recommended by the manufactures, to be used for Philips 56 and 58 AVP photomultipliers in conditions of high gain or of high linearity have been determined. Measurements are given in which there is considerable improvement in gain or in linearity obtained with such distributions as compared with those recommended by the manufacturers. A new apparatus for independently varying the interdynode voltages is described, with which the optimum distributions for any particular photomultiplier can be easily found.

Abstract

We have searched for the sequence of decays K L 0 → π 0 H 0 and H 0 →e + e − at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS), and have allowed for a non-zero H 0 lifetime. Three candidates have been seen, consistent with an expected background of 3.3. Limits on the branching ratio product in the range 10 −8 –10 −7 are presented as a function of the mass and lifetime of the H 0 . These can be used to restrict the neutral Higgs of the minimal standard model.

Abstract

Many alterations of ganglioside content and distribution have been described in human and experimental tumours. Our previous data showed the presence of lipid alterations in meningiomas, in particular an increased monosialylganglioside content. Therefore we analyzed the distribution and content of gangliosides in various gliomas. The data show that ganglioside content is inversely proportional to tissue malignancy and that the ganglioside pattern can be described as lacking of polysialylgangliosides with increased GD3 content. The amount of GD3 (as percent of total gangliosides sialic acid) increases from 15% in astrocytomas grade I to 60% in grade IV. The GD3 increase seems to be almost specific of glioma. Because anti-GD3 antibodies could be used to localize immunohistochemically the ganglioside and to help the tumour grading, we used a purified preparation of GD3 to produce monoclonal antibodies in balb/c mice. But because some clones did produce anti-GD3 antibodies the low yield requires further experiments to obtain an antibody useful for this purpose.

Abstract

Analysis of T cells from patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) identified a deficit (i) in the induction of HLA Class II antigens by PHA although the proliferative response was normal and (ii) in the [3H]thymidine incorporation in autologous mixed lymphocyte reactions (MLR) with PHA-T cells as stimulators. In RA these abnormalities were more marked in patients with active disease than in those in clinical remission. The deficit of autologous MLR with PHA-T cells was more marked than that of autologous MLR with non-T cells and of allogeneic MLR. Serum from patients with SLE and with RA did not display any detectable inhibitory activity on the induction of HLA Class II antigens by PHA, on the proliferative response of lymphocytes to PHA, on autologous MLR with PHA-T cells and with non-T cells as stimulators and on allogeneic MLR. These results suggest that the abnormalities we have identified reflect an intrinsic defect of T cells.

Abstract

The K0 beam and detector used for a high-precision measurement of the CP-violation parameter ϵ′ at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) are described. The beam provides KL and KS alternately through a common decay region. The detection of the decays is based on wire chambers and calorimeters without employing a magnet. The trigger and readout system achieve a high selectively for the suppressed, CP-violating, two-pion decays of the KL by incorporation of hard-wired processors. The readout is based on Fastbus for maximum data rates.

Abstract

The performances of a liquid argon calorimeter with wide gaps (2.8 cm) operating in current sensitive mode have been studied with 6.6–36 GeV electron and 40 GeV pion beams at the IHEP accelerator. The good uniformity in charge collection efficiency obtained with this unusual mode has led to a reduction of sampling fluctuations to values of σ S E = 0.04 √E . Spatial and angular resolutions have been measured as well. The equivalent noise energy was 82 MeV rms for the whole detector.

Abstract

Small but statistically significant shifts (hysteresis) between the up (increasing tension direction) and down (decreasing tension) pCa/tension relation for several muscle types of the rabbit and rat were found. The largest shift is, at most, 0.093 p units or 60% of that reported for the barnacle muscle. The direction of shift for psoas is opposite to that for the soleus and tibialis. © 1985 Chapman and Hall Ltd.

Abstract

Administration of α-ketoglutarate (KGT) has been reported to reduce lactacidemia both in pathological conditions (Scarlato et al. 1981) and after exercise in normal subjects (Cerretelli et al. 1981). KGT could reduce lactacidemia by increasing the catabolism of pyruvate via either the Krebs cycle or by transamination. To discriminate between those two possibilities we investigated the effect of IV administration of KGT in subjects performing a standard ischemic work. As reported by Munsat (1970) ligation of the arm while performing a squeezing exercise with the hand blocks the utilization of pyruvate by the Krebs cycle. If KGT reduces lactacidemia favoring pyruvate utilization by the Krebs cycle, then administration of KGT should not change the blood level of lactate after exercise. Our results suggest that this is not the case.

Abstract

Presents the first results of a measurement of the total cross section sigma /sub T/ in proton-proton collisions at equivalent laboratory momenta between 291 and 1480 GeV/c at the CERN Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR). The method is based on the measurement of the ratio of the total interaction rate and the machine luminosity. The data show an increase of about 10% in sigma /sub T/ in this energy interval. Abstract

We present the first results of an experiment at the CERN intersecting storage rings, which measures the total cross-section in proton-proton collisions. The equivalent laboratory momenta are 291, 496, 1068 and 1480 GeV/c. We have made a direct measurement of αT as the ratio between the total interaction rate and the machine luminosity. The present paper gives a detailed description of the experimental apparatus and of the analysis procedure. We find that αT increases by about 10% in the energy region studied.

Abstract

Summary Ryegrass uniformly labelled with I4C was incubated aerobically at 25°C for 62 days in two contrasting soils, a near-neutral (pH 6.8) palcudalf from England and a strongly acid (pH 3.6) haplorthox from Brazil. Decomposition of the labelled plant material was faster in the near-neutral soil throughout the whole of the incubation period. In neither soil did the addition of fresh plant material significantly accelerate the evolution of CO2 from organic matter already in the soil, i.e. there was no priming action. In the near-neutral soil there was a rapid build up of labelled microbial biomass in the first 6 days, followed by a much slower increase that continued throughout the whole incubation period. After 62 days 22.5% of the labelled C remaining in the near-neutral soil was in the biomass. The yield coefficient (the fraction of the incoming plant C converted to microbial C) of this stabilized or ‘resting’ biomass was 0.15. Much less labelled microbial biomass was formed in the acid soil than in the near-neutral soil. By the end of 62 days only 6.2% of the labelled carbon remaining in the acid soil was in the biomass. Biomass C measurements in strongly acid soils must however be treated with caution as the technique used has not yet been adequately validated for such soils.

Abstract

In this paper we present new results on upper limits for the search of Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNL) with data collected by NA48/2 (2003-2004), NA62-RK (2007) and NA62 (2015) CERN experiments. The data collected with different trigger configuration allow to search for both long and short living heavy neutrinos in the mass range below the kaon mass. In addition the status of the search for K+ → π+vv with the NA62 detector will be briefly presented.

Abstract

Summary Chemical and mineral studies were carried out on weathered materials from six profiles developed on granites located in different areas of Brazil. Quartz and K-feldspar are the most abundant minerals overall. Kaolinite is the most common secondary mineral and is principally a feldspar weathering product. Mica breakdown is associated with smectite formation in semi-arid regions. In more humid regions mica weathering products include interlayered mica-vermiculite, vermiculite and kaolinite. Changes in the concentrations of Si, Al and K reflect the weathering behaviour of quartz, kaolinite, K-feldspar respectively, although K mobilities sometimes appear to be governed by processes related to the formation of secondary minerals. Ca and Mg are the first elements to exhibit depletion and their removal rates are very fast relative to K. P is also among the most mobile elements. Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, Ba and Pb concentrations were measured. The first row transition metals are the most depleted. Rb and Sr are retained relative to Na, Mg, and Ca, and Ba accumulates as weathering proceeds. Y, Zr, Nb and Pb concentrations show little variation. The conclusion is that the factors controlling deep leaching are complex and the common notion that weathering rates are higher at lower latitudes should be reassessed.

Abstract

A new Time of Flight (TOF) detector based on scintillator bars with fine-mesh photomultipliers at both ends has been in operation since 2001 in the CDF experiment. With a design resolution of 100 ps, the TOF can provide separation between K/sup /spl plusmn// and /spl pi//sup /spl plusmn// in pp~ collisions at the 2/spl sigma/ level for low momentum, which enhances b flavor tagging capabilities. Because of its very fast response, the TOF is an excellent triggering device, and it is used to trigger on highly ionizing particles, multiple minimum ionizing particles and cosmic rays. Particle identification is achieved by comparing the time-of-flight of the particle measured by the TOF to the time expected for a given mass hypothesis. In order to obtain the resolution necessary for particle ID, optimal calibrations are critical. This paper describes the TOF detector, its calibration procedure, the achieved resolution, the long term operation performances and some of the first results from data analysis using this detector.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS recorded in 2007 a large sample of K+ ? µ+?µ decays. A peak search in the missing mass spectrum of this decay is performed. In the absence of observed signal, the limits obtained on B(K+ ? µ+?h) and on the mixing matrix element |Uµ 4| are reported. The upgraded NA62 experiment started data taking in 2015. About 5×1011K+ decays have been recorded so far to measure the branching ratio of the K+ ? ?+?? decay. Preliminary results from the K+ ? ?+?? analysis based on about 5% of the 2016 statistics are reported.

Abstract

A search for heavy neutral lepton ($N$) production in $K^+\to e^+N$ decays using the data sample collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2017--2018 is reported. Upper limits of the extended neutrino mixing matrix element $|U_{e4}|^2$ are established at the level of $10^{-9}$ over most of the accessible heavy neutral lepton mass range 144--462 MeV/$c^2$, with the assumption that the lifetime exceeds 50 ns. These limits improve significantly upon those of previous production and decay searches. The $|U_{e4}|^2$ range favoured by Big Bang Nucleosynthesis is excluded up to a mass of about 340 MeV/$c^2$., Comment: Version accepted for publication in Physics Letters B (28 June 2020)

Abstract

The NA62 experiment at SPS is a continuation of the long standing CERN kaon physics program. The high statistics and the unprecedent precision allow to probe the Standard Model and test the description of the strong interactions at low energy. The final results on the the lepton universality test by measuring the ratio $R_K = \Gamma(K^{+}\to e^{+}\nu) / \Gamma(K^{+}\to \mu^{+}\nu)$ and the study of the $K^\pm\to\pi^{\pm}\gamma\gamma $ decay are presented. The major goal of the NA62 experiment is to perform a measurement of the $Br(K^{+} \to \pi^{+} \nu \bar{\nu})$ with a precision of 10% in two years of data taking. Abstract

The main goal of the NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS accelerator is to measure the branching fraction of the ultra-rare decay K+→π+ν with 10% accuracy. Key aspects of the detector configuration are described, with emphasis on tagging and timestamping the minority kaons in the high intensity, unseparated, charged-particle beam using KTAG, an upgraded version of a CEDAR differential Cherenkov detector. Data are presented showing that KTAG was successfully commissioned at CERN in November 2012.
