Abstract

Recent reporting trends are reviewed in the context of the Global Reporting Initiative guidelines and the Australian Minerals Industry Code for Environmental Management. Public reporting of environmental, health and safety, social/community and economic performance has evolved over the past two decades from the production of separate documents or publicity leaflets to more integrated reports on progress towards sustainable development. Without a framework of public reporting objectives the benefits to the organisation will not be recognised and the considerable expenditure involved will be difficult to justify. Significant gains can result from focusing on the reporting process rather than the document. Abstract

This paper presents the results of electric field measurements made within a severe thunderstorm in central Oklahoma on June 13, 1983. The observations show the electrical structure of a severe storm anvil to be more complex than the simple structure of a positive interior and thin, negative screening layers. Evidence is found of extensive regions of both positive and negative charge in the interior of the anvil, and the thicknesses of screening layers are found to be about an order of magnitude greater than calculated in previous models. A conceptual model for the development of the electrical structure of thunderstorm anvils is proposed in which anvil dynamics plays an important role.

Abstract

A simple model is outlined to describe electron precipitation from the population of charged particles trapped in the earth's magnetic field; almost all of the precipitation is shown to occur in the region of the South Atlantic Anomaly. When the effect of a dawn-to-dusk electric field across the magnetosphere is included in the model, a diurnal modulation of the precipitated electron flux is predicted. Experimental evidence which supports the diurnal modulation model is described.

Abstract

Measurements from nine high-altitude balloon flights at altitudes ranging from 10 to 30 km have been obtained in order to study atmospheric conductivity variations on local and global scales. The conductivity profiles are not correlated with solar or cosmic ray activity, but they exhibit variations which appear to be dominated by local effects. Evidence is provided of stratospheric aerosol layers with number densities of the order of 1000/cu cm. It is suggested that global conductivity models employing latitudinal variations based on cosmic ray ionization alone may be improved by including the effects of latitudinal variations of temperature and aerosols.

229. In situ measurements and radar observations of a severe storm - Electricity, kinematics, and precipitation

Abstract

Electric field measurements made inside a multicell severe storm in Oklahoma in 1983 with a balloon-borne instrument are presented. The properties of the electric charge regions, such as altitude, thickness, and charge concentrations, are studied. These measurements are analzyed with meteorological measurements of temperature and humidity, and balloon tracking and radar observations. The relation between the electric charge structure and the precipitation and kinematic features of the storm is examined. The data reveal that the cell exhibits a bipolar charge structure with negative charge below positive charge. The average charge concentrations of the two regions are estimated as -1.2 and 0.15 nC/cu m, respectively; the upper positive charge is about 6 km in vertical extent, and the lower negative charge is less than 1 km in vertical extent.

Abstract

The objectives of a study to evaluate the potential of Shuttle Imaging Radar-B (SIR-B) imagery for various applications are outlined. Specific goals include: the development of techniques for registration multiple acquisition, varied illumination, and incidence-angle SIR-B imagery, and a model for estimation of the relative contributions to the backscattered radiation of topography, surface roughness, and dielectric and conductivity components; (2) the evaluation of SIR-B imagery for delineation of agricultural lands affected by secondary salinity in the southwest and southeast agricultural regions of Australia; (3) the development of techniques for application of SIR-B imagery for geologic, geomorphologic and soils mapping and mineral exploration; and (4) the evaluation of the use of SIR-B imagery in determining ocean currents, current shear patterns, internal waves and bottom features for specific locations off the Australian coast.

231. A hydrological analysis of east Australian floods using Nimbus-5 electrically scanning radiometer data

Abstract

The chronological development and diminution of six floods in eastern Australia during January, February, and March 1974 were mapped for the first time by the Nimbus Electrically Scanning Microwave Radiometer (ESMR). Day and nighttime ESMR (19.35 GHz) coverage was analyzed for the low gradient, flooded Darling River system in New South Wales. Apparent movement of surface water as indicated by low brightness temperatures (less than 250 K, day and less than 240 K, night) was easily followed around the curved runoff basin along the northern shoreline of the flooded Darling River during this 3-month period. This pattern was in good agreement with flood crest data at selected river height gage stations, even under cloudy conditions.
