In the last two decades, poly(hydroxyalkanoates) (PHA) were solely produced using heterotrophic bacteria in aerobic cultivation. With respect to the great potential (500 Mt yr-1) of raw industrial CO2 streams and even greater potential of flue gases, the focus on photo-autotrophic biotechnological processes is increasing steadily. Primarily, PHA-gene transfer from heterotrophic bacteria into algae and plant cells was attempted, with the intention to combine the known biosynthesis pathway with autotrophic cultivation. The natural occurrence of PHA in cyanobacteria is known at least since 1966. However, cyanobacteria were never considered for commercial production because the PHA amount based on cell mass and based on volumetric productivity is generally very low. Therefore, strain improvements were suggested, either by gene amplification or by suppression of biochemical pathways competing for the cell's acetate pool. In the late 1990s, the success of genetic modification was confirmed experimentally, elevating the cyanobacteria cell's PHA content. With additional optimization, PHB amounts up to 50% w/w of biomass dry matter or up to about 2.4 g L-1 bioreactor volume could be produced within 11 days. Considering the land use for agriculture and the competition for plant biomass between food, feed, fuel and energy production, the binding of CO2 in a biotechnological process using photo-autotrophic microorganisms may become a promising option. Over the past few years the assessment of the earthquake potential of large continental faults has increasingly relied on field investigations. State-of-the-art seismic hazard models are progressively complementing the information derived from earthquake cat- alogues with geological observations of active faulting. Using these observations, however, requires full understanding of the relationships between seismogenic slip at depth and surface deformation, such that the evidence indicating the presence of a large, potentially seismogenic fault can be singled out effectively and unambiguously. We used observations and models of the 6 April 2009, Mw 6.3, L'Aquila, normal faulting earthquake to explore the relationships between the activity of a large fault at seismogenic depth and its surface evidence. This very well-documented earthquake is representative of mid-size yet damaging earthquakes that are frequent around the Mediterranean Basin, and is somehow paradigmatic of the nature of the associated geologic evidence along with observational difficulties and ambiguities. Thanks to available high-resolution geologic, geodetic and seismological data aided by analogue modeling, we reconstructed the full geometry of the seismogenic source in relation with surface and sub-surface faults.We find that the earthquake was caused by seismogenic slip in the range 3-10 km depth, and that the slip distribution was strongly controlled by inherited discontinuities. We also contend that faulting was expressed at the surface by pseudo-primary breaks resulting from coseismic crustal bending and by sympathetic slip on secondary faults. Based on our results we propose a scheme for hierarchizing normal faults through which all surface occurrences related to faulting at depth can be interpreted in the frame of a single, mechanically coherent model. Contents Little information is available on the quality of stallion spermatozoa after sex sorting. The objectives of the present study were to assess the quality of sex-sorted stallion spermatozoa and determine its fertilizing ability after hysteroscopic low dose insemination. Ejaculates from four stallions were collected and sorted by a MoFlo SX® flow cytometer/sperm sorter. Before and after sorting, spermatozoa were evaluated for motility by Computer Assisted Sperm Analysis, viability (SYBR 14-propidium iodide), mitochondrial function (JC-1) and acrosomal status (fluorescein isothiocyanate Pisum sativum agglutinin conjugated). A fertility trial was carried out on four mares (seven oestrous cycles) by hysteroscopic insemination, depositing 5 × 106 X-bearing spermatozoa. Sex sorting resulted in a significant decrease (p < 0.001) in all motility characteristics. Sperm viability and percentage of spermatozoa with functional mitochondria were not affected by the sorting process, while the percentage of reacted spermatozoa was higher (p < 0.01) for non-sorted than sorted spermatozoa. Pregnancy rate was 28.6% (2/7) after low dose hysteroscopic insemination. Only one pregnancy was carried to term with the birth of a healthy filly. In conclusion, despite the reduction in sperm motility, sex sorting did not impair stallion sperm viability and mitochondrial activity immediately post-thaw; moreover, the sexed spermatozoa retained the ability to fertilize in vivo. We report on the realization of high-quality silica optical microcavities on a chip. We show that a precise control of radii of both silica disk and silicon pillar defines the shape of molten microresonators from microtoroids to microspheres. These last ones advantageously combine small mode volumes in structures of very small radii (5 < r < 14 μm) which are fully compatible to wafer-based processing. The optical quality-factor of silica microsphere on a chip is as high as 7.5 × 107 at 1.55 μm. The losses sources in these microspheres are detailed and we show that measured quality-factors are limited by the radiative losses for the smallest ones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this letter, the fabrication and characterization of a broadband 980-nm/1550-nm wavelength (de)multiplexer is described. This device is adapted for pump/signal multiplexing in erbium-doped waveguide amplifiers. The structure chosen is a segmented asymmetric Y-junction, which can be fabricated with one masking level using silver-sodium ion-exchange on a silicate glass substrate. The nonresonant behavior of the Y-junction allows a wideband multiplexing with isolations increasing from (9.7plusmn0.1) dB at 1500 nm to (15plusmn0.1) dB at 1630 nm and (26plusmn1) dB at 980 nm.
