Estuarine salt intrusion greatly threatens freshwater supply in surrounding lands. Physical barriers, which reduce the estuary length (L), are widely constructed to control salt intrusion. Yet, the role of L in salt intrusion remains unknown. Using a process‐based, idealized, semi‐analytical three‐dimensional model, we systematically investigate for the first time this unknown for tide‐dominated, periodically weakly stratified estuaries. Results show decreasing L significantly reduces salinities for short estuaries (L < Lw/4, with Lw the dominant tidal wavelength), but not for long estuaries. Tidal pumping remains a key salt importer in most estuaries, regardless of L. However, substantial decreases in L relative to Lw/4 can change the dominant landward salt importer from tidal pumping to horizontal diffusion. The latter, together with gravitational circulation, weakens responses of salt intrusion to changes in tidal and river forcing in short estuaries. This study highlights the importance of considering L to understanding and mitigating salt intrusion. Plain Language Summary: Salty seawater can enter rivers through estuaries, where rivers meet the sea, thus affecting the surrounding freshwater supply and the healthy functioning of estuarine ecosystems. To mitigate the adverse impact of salt intrusion under aggravating climate change and human activities, expensive salinity barriers are commonly built around the world. These barriers result in an abrupt change in the estuary length and can substantially affect estuarine salt intrusion. This study uses a simplified computer model to understand the dependency of salt intrusion on estuary length in estuaries with small top‐to‐bottom salinity differences. Our results show that estuary length substantially influences the salinity distribution and estuaries of different lengths can respond to changes in tides and river flow contrastingly. Our study highlights the importance of considering the impact of estuary length to effectively mitigate estuarine salt intrusion. This paper provides a sensitivity analysis around how characterizing sandy, intertidal foreshore evolution in XBeach-X impacts on wave runup and morphological change of a vulnerable, composite gravel beach. The study is motivated by a need for confidence in storm-impact modeling outputs to inform coastal management policy for composite beaches worldwide. First, the model is run with the sandy settings applied to capture changes in the intertidal foreshore, with the gravel barrier assigned as a non-erodible surface. Model runs were then repeated with the gravel settings applied to obtain wave runup and erosion of the barrier crest, updating the intertidal foreshore from the previous model outputs every 5, 10 and 15 min, and comparing this with a temporally static foreshore. Results show that the scenario with no foreshore evolution led to the highest wave runup and barrier erosion. The applied foreshore evolution setting update is shown to be a large control on the distribution of freeboard values indicative of overwash hazard and barrier erosion by causing an increase (with 5 min foreshore updates applied) or a decrease (with no applied foreshore updating) in the Iribarren number. Therefore, the sandy, intertidal component should not be neglected in gravel barrier modeling applications given the risk of over- or under-predicting the wave runup and barrier erosion. There is mixed evidence on whether incarcerated persons with mental illnesses have increased odds of being placed in solitary confinement. This study answered this question using a large system-wide sample and a propensity score matching design that accounted for a wide range of individual and facility confounds. Having a mental illness was associated with an increase of up to 170% in the odds of extended solitary confinement, depending on the diagnosis. A wide range of mental illnesses predicted extended solitary confinement. The association between having a mental illness and being sent to extended solitary confinement was only partially explained by misconduct. The findings suggest that incarcerated persons with mental illness may garner differential responses from the prison system, similar to those seen in studies of arrest and incarceration. Studies are needed that examine how incarcerated persons with mental illnesses are perceived by, interact with, and are sanctioned by prison staff. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Combination of uncertainties in water level and wave height predictions for extreme storms can result in unacceptable levels of error, rendering flood hazard assessment frameworks less useful. A 2D inundation model, LISFLOOD-FP, was used to quantify sensitivity of flooding to uncertainty in coastal hazard conditions and method used to force the coastal boundary of the model. It is shown that flood inundation is more sensitive to small changes in coastal hazard conditions due to the setup of the regional model, than the approach used to apply these conditions as boundary forcing. Once the threshold for flooding is exceeded, a few centimetres increase in combined water level and wave height increases both the inundation and consequent damage costs. Improved quantification of uncertainty in inundation assessments can aid long-term coastal flood hazard mitigation and adaptation strategies, to increase confidence in knowledge of how coastlines will respond to future changes in sea-level. Storm propagation speed (SPS) can noticeably impact coastal floods around semi-closed basins influenced by extratropical offshore storms. As a case study, the SPS impact on potential flood hazards due to extreme water levels along the UK east coast was studied using a numerical shelf sea model (FVCOM). The storm Xaver, which caused the largest North Sea surge over the past 60 years, was studied as a base scenario. Halving/doubling the SPS results in a smaller surge and a longer/shorter surge duration. Hence, the largest peak water level was found at actual speed, while the largest potential flood hazard occurred at half speed. Tide–surge interaction tends to reduce the M2 tide along the coast and advance its propagation for all SPS. A three-dimensional semi-analytical model, including a time-periodic wind forcing, was used to investigate the dominant mechanisms behind the surge dynamics, where wind duration is directly related to the SPS. Long wind durations correspond to small SPS, and vice versa. The semi-analytical model was applied to the North Sea. The model reproduces the spatial features of the North Sea surge and its dependence on SPS, confirming the surge induced by offshore storms is primarily associated with wind set-up. Model results suggest the SPS of Xaver is likely to have contributed greatly to the occurrence of the largest North Sea surge due to wind-generated resonance. Background: Uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) is a mitochondral protein transporter that uncouples electron transport from ATP production. UCP1 is highly expressed in brown adipose tissue (BAT), including hibernomas, but its expression in other adipose tumours is uncertain. UCP1 has also been found in other tissues (e.g. smooth muscle) but whether it is expressed in non-adipose benign and malignant soft tissue tumours is unknown. Methods: Immunohistochemical staining of normal (axillary) BAT and subcutaneous/abdominal white adipose tissue (WAT) as well as a wide range of benign and malignant primary soft tissue tumours (n = 171) was performed using a rabbit polyclonal antibody to UCP1. BAT and hibernomas were also stained by immunohistochemistry with monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies to adipose/non-adipose tumour markers in order to characterise the immunophenotype of BAT cells. Results: UCP1 was strongly expressed in the cytoplasm of brown fat cells in BAT and hibernomas, both of which also expressed aP2, S100, CD31, vimentin and calponin. UCP1 was not expressed in WAT or other adipose tumours with the exception a few tumour cells in pleomorphic liposarcoma. UCP1 was variably expressed by tumour cells in a few non-adipose sarcomas including leiomyosarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, alveolar soft part sarcoma, synovial sarcoma and clear cell sarcoma. Conclusions: UCP1 is strongly expressed in BAT but not WAT and is found in all hibernomas and a few pleomorphic liposarcomas but not in other adipose tumours. UCP1 expression in a few non-adipose soft tissue sarcomas may possibly reflect origin of tumour cells from a common mesenchymal stem cell precursor and/or developmental pathway. Wave overtopping and subsequent coastal flood hazard is strongly controlled by wind and water levels, and is especially critical in hyper-tidal estuaries where even small changes in wave heights can be catastrophic if they are concurrent with high spring tide. Wave overtopping imposes serious hazard in heavily populated and industrialized hyper-tidal estuaries, where infrastructure, transport networks and natural resources may be located. Wave hazard in estuaries is largely attributed to high amplitude shorter period, locally generated wind waves; while low amplitude longer period waves rarely impact low-lying coastal zones up-estuary. The effect of wind and wave properties on up-estuary wave propagation and the sensitivity of significant wave height are investigated numerically along the shoreline of the Severn Estuary, southwest England, as an example of hyper-tidal estuaries worldwide. Delft3D-WAVE is used to simulate significant wave height with representative values for wind speed and direction, wave height, period and direction used to identify key combinations of factors that define the wave hazard generation in the Severn Estuary. The model confirms high amplitude, short period wind waves are sensitive to opposing winds, with a steepening effect that varies along the estuary shoreline, highlighting the effect of estuarine geometry on wave hazard. Low amplitude, long period wind waves respond with greatest variability in significant wave height to strong winds resulting in their propagation further up-estuary. Our results advance current understanding of the compound interaction between wind and waves, and identify critical conditions maximizing the hazard and hazard variability along the shoreline. The outcomes from this research can help to avoid economic losses from operational downtime in ports and harbours, inform sustainable coastal sea defence design and understand how wave hazard may vary under future climate due to changing storm tracks. Results can also long-term coastal defence and management strategies, as sustainable coastal management requires confidence in the knowledge of any possible future changes to wave hazard. Background: Periostin is a matricellular protein that is expressed in bone and joint tissues. To determine the expression of periostin in primary bone tumours and to assess whether it plays a role in tumour progression, we carried out immunohistochemistry and ELISA for periostin in a range of neoplastic and non-neoplastic bone and joint lesions. Methods: 140 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded sections of bone tumours and tumour-like lesions were stained by an indirect immunoperoxidase technique with a polyclonal anti-periostin antibody. Periostin expression was also assessed in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and non-inflammatory osteoarthritis (OA) synovium and synovial fluid immunohistochemistry and ELISA respectively. Results: Periostin was most strongly expressed in osteoid/woven bone of neoplastic and non-neoplastic bone-forming lesions, including osteoblastoma, osteosarcoma, fibrous dysplasia, osteofibrous dysplasia, fracture callus and myositis ossificans, and mineralised chondroid matrix/woven bone in chondroblastoma and clear cell chondrosarcoma. Reactive host bone at the edge of growing tumours, particularly in areas of increased vascularity and fibrosis, also stained strongly for periostin. Vascular elements in RA synovium strongly expressed periostin, and synovial fluid levels of periostin were higher in RA than OA. Conclusions: In keeping with its known role in modulating the synthesis of collagen and other extracellular matrix proteins in bone, strong periostin expression was noted in benign and malignant lesions forming an osteoid or osteoid-like matrix. Periostin was also noted in other bone tumours and was found in areas of reactive bone and increased vascularity at the edge of growing tumours, consistent with its involvement in tissue remodelling and angiogenesis associated with tumour progression.
