Abstract

Meier and Perrig (2000) as well as Buchner and Wippich (2000) have shown that simple dissociations between explicit and implicit memory measures need not reflect functional dissociations of hypothetical underlying memory systems. Instead, such dissociations may also result from the fact that some widely used implicit memory measures are simply less reliable than the explicit measures with which they have been compared. We extend this argument in two ways. First, we show that illusion-based memory measures such as the priming measures derived from fame and preference judgement tasks are also subject to the reliability problem. Second, we show that yes--no and two-alternative forced-choice paradigms should, and in fact do, yield virtually identical results as far as the reliability of the memory tests is concerned.

Abstract

The unique constant degradation method analyzes dynamics of metastable defect generation in amorphous hydrogenated silicon with constant photoconductivity. The incident light intensity depends linearly on time. The data are consistent with the theory that bimolecular recombination of localized electron-hole pairs cause the metastable defect. The results do not agree with those of the dispersive transport simulation schemes.

Abstract

FKBP12 ligands are characterized by an elementary and simple structure unlike their precursors, FK506 and rapamycin. FKBP12 inactivates cis-trans-peptidylprolyl isomerase (rotamase) despite the low inhibition constant K(i,app) of 1 nanomoles. X-ray crystallographic studies characterize the atomic configurations of three FKBP12-ligand complexes and one unlinked ligand. These configurations are contrasted with the structures of FKBP12-FK506 and FKBP12-rapamycin complexes. These complexes have a potential role in modulating signal transduction.

221. An evaluation of SMOS L-band vegetation optical depth (L-VOD) data sets:high sensitivity of L-VOD to above-ground biomass in Africa

Abstract

The vegetation optical depth (VOD) measured at microwave frequencies is related to the vegetation water content and provides information complementary to visible/infra-red vegetation indices. This study is devoted to the characterisation of a new VOD data set obtained from SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) satellite observations at L-band (1.4 GHz). Three different SMOS L-band VOD (L-VOD) data sets (SMOS Level 2, Level 3 and SMOS-IC) were compared with data sets on tree height, visible/infra-red indexes (NDVI, EVI), cumulated precipitation, and above ground biomass (AGB) for the African continent. For all relationships, SMOS-IC showed the lowest dispersion and highest correlation. Overall, we found a strong (R > 0.85) correlation with no clear sign of saturation between L-VOD and four AGB data sets. The relationship linking L-VOD to tree height (R = 0.87) and Baccini's AGB (R = 0.94) was strong and linear. The relationships between L-VOD and three other AGB data sets were linear per land cover class, but with a changing slope depending on the land cover type. For low vegetation classes, the annual mean of L-VOD spans a range from 0 to 0.7 and it is linearly correlation with the amount of the average annual precipitations. SMOS L-VOD showed a higher sensitivity to AGB as compared to NDVI and K/X/C-VOD (VOD measured, respectively, at 19, 10.7, and 6.9 GHz). The results showed that although the spatial resolution of L-VOD is coarse (~ 40 km), the high temporal frequency and sensitivity to AGB makes SMOS L-VOD a very promising index for large scale monitoring of the vegetation status, in particular biomass.

Abstract

'Black etching' has been proposed previously as a method for the nanoscale texturing of silicon surfaces, which results in an almost complete suppression of reflectivity in the spectral range of absorption relevant for photovoltaics. The method modifies the topmost 150 to 300 nm of the material and thus also is applicable for thin films of silicon. The present work is focused on the optical effects induced by the black-etching treatment on hydrogenated amorphous and microcrystalline silicon thin films, in particular with respect to their application in solar cells. In addition to a strong reduction of the reflectivity, efficient light trapping within the modified thin films is found. The enhancement of the optical absorption due to the light trapping is investigated via photometric measurements and photothermal deflection spectroscopy. The correlation of the texture morphology (characterized via atomic force microscopy) with the optical effects is discussed in terms of an effective medium with gradually varying optical density and in the framework of the theory of statistical light trapping. Photoconductivity spectra directly show that the light trapping causes a significant prolongation of the light path within the black silicon films by up to 15 μm for ∼1 μm thick films, leading to a significant increase of the absorption in the red. Abstract

The structural and electrical properties before and after laser annealing of spin-coated films of doped silicon nanocrystals (ncs) produced from the gas phase are presented. While the as-deposited films form a porous network of ncs and show only weak electrical conductivity independent of the doping level, a laser annealing step leads to sintering and melting of the particles and tremendously increases the lateral conductivity. By controlled doping of the initial particles, the conductivity can be further enhanced by seven orders of magnitude reaching values of up to 5 Ω-1 cm-1. The conductivity is found to increase with the doping concentration for highly doped samples while it is independent of the doping level below a critical concentration of 1019 cm-3. The results are discussed within a compensational model taking into account the defect concentration from electron paramagnetic resonance measurements and the activation energies of the electrical conductivity. Surface segregation of phosphorus during growth is identified as the origin of the apparently small phosphorus doping efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
