Abstract

The cosmic rays modulation inside the heliosphere is well described by a transport equation introduced by Parker in 1958. We used the HelMod Monte Carlo code to reproduce the modulation effect in the inner heliosphere depending from solar activity and solar polarity. In this 2-D MonteCarlo approach we include a general treatment of the diffusion tensor that compound an enhancement of perpendicular diffusion coefficient at high solar latitude and a polar increased magnetic field. In our simulation we considered a heliosphere that changes the modulation parameter with the distance from the Earth, including periods prior to the one we intend to simulate. In this work we furthermore exploited the energy distribution of injected particles to the observed flux. We compared HelMod results with data of BESS-97, AMS-98, BESS-98, BESS-99, BESS-2000, BESS-2002 and PAMELA; this covering a period of 11 years and two solar polarity, these simulations are well in agreement with experimental data

Abstract

The treatment of the electron-nucleus interaction based on the Mott differential cross section was extended to account for effects due to screened Coulomb potentials, finite sizes and finite rest masses of nuclei for electrons above 200 keV and up to ultra high energies. This treatment allows one to determine both the total and differential cross sections, thus, subsequently to calculate the resulting nuclear and non-ionizing stopping powers. Above a few hundreds of MeV, neglecting the effect due to finite rest masses of recoil nuclei the stopping power and NIEL result to be largely underestimated; while, above a few tens of MeV the finite size of the nuclear target prevents a further large increase of stopping powers which approach almost constant values

Abstract

Selected results of experimental studies of quasi-periodic variations of cosmic rays obtained from ground based measurements, especially from neutron monitor Climax, are reviewed. At high frequencies the dominant periodicity is the solar diurnal variation and its higher harmonics. The slope of power spectrum density at high frequencies is flatter for solar maxima than for solar minima. Wavelet spectra are useful tool for checking the fine strucure of quasi-periodicities and their temporal behaviour. The ~27 day, ~13.5 day and ~9 day quasi-periodicity is far more complex than the diurnal one. For ~27 day variation, two local peaks are temporarily observed, one near 27 and second one near 30-31 days with variable contribution to the signal. ~150 days, ~1.7 yr periodicities are clearly seen in the Lomb-Scargle periodogram.

Abstract

Cosmic Ray differential intensity at Earth has been reproduced using a 2D stochastic Montecarlo diffusion code and compared with measured data. We evaluated the effect of a stretched and compressed heliosphere on the Cosmic Ray fluxes at the Earth. We introduced a dependence of the diffusion parameter on the heliospheric size. We then found, for our 2D model, in comparison with experimental data, the optimum value of the heliospheric radius, which changes with time and solar activity. Differences in the heliospheric radius are effective only at energy below a few hundred MeV. Our results are in agreement with Voyager measurements and with models of heliospheric size modulation.

Abstract

We implemented a 2D Monte Carlo model to simulate the solar modulation of galactic cosmic rays. The model is based on the Parker’s transport equation which contains diffusion, convection, particle drift and energy loss. Following the evolution in time of the solar activity, we are able to modulate a local interstellar spectrum (LIS), that we assumed isotropic beyond the termination shock, down to the Earth position inside the heliosphere. In this work we focused our attention to the cosmic ray positron fraction at energy below 10 GeV, showing how the particle drift processes could explain different results for AMS-01 and PAMELA. We compare our modulated spectra with observations at Earth, and then make a prediction of the cosmic ray positron fraction for the AMS-02 experiment.

Abstract

A propagation model of galactic cosmic protons through the heliosphere was implemented using a two-dimensional Monte Carlo approach to determine the differential intensities of protons during solar cycle 23. The model includes the effects due to the variation of solar activity during the propagation of cosmic rays from the boundary of the heliopause down to Earth's position. Drift effects are also accounted for. The simulated spectra were found to be in agreement with those obtained from experimental observations carried out by the BESS, AMS, and PAMELA collaborations. In addition, the modulated spectrum determined with the present code for the year 1995 exhibits the latitudinal gradient and equatorial southward offset minimum found by the Ulysses fast scan in 1995.

Abstract

Using a large sample of photoproduced charm mesons from the FOCUS experiment at Fermilab (FNAL-E831), we observe the decay D0--K+pi- with a signal yield of 149+/-31 events compared to a similarly cut sample consisting of 36 760+/-195 D0--K-pi+ events. We use the observed ratio of D0--K+pi- to D0--K-pi+ (0.404+/-0.085+/-0.025)% to obtain a relationship between the D0 mixing and doubly Cabibbo suppressed decay parameters.

Fermilab's FOCUS experiment obtained a very high statistics sample of charmed particle decays. Preliminary results on spectroscopy, doubly Cabibbo suppressed decays and lifetimes are presented.

Abstract

The variety of isotopes in cosmic rays allows us to study different aspects of the processes that cosmic rays undergo between the time they are produced and the time of their arrival in the heliosphere. In this paper, we present measurements of the isotopic ratios 2H/4He, 3He/4He, 6Li/7Li, 7Be/(9Be+10Be), and 10B/11B in the range 0.2–1.4 GeV of kinetic energy per nucleon. The measurements are based on the data collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, AMS-01, during the STS-91 flight in 1998 June.

In the space environment, instruments onboard of spacecrafts can be affected by displacement damage due to radiation. The differential scattering cross section for screened nucleus–nucleus interactions - i.e., including the effects due to screened Coulomb nuclear fields -, nuclear stopping powers and non-ionization energy losses are treated from about 50 keV/nucleon up to relativistic energies.

Abstract

Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) are mainly protons confined in the galactic magnetic field to form an isotropic flux inside the galaxy. Before reaching the Earth orbit they enter the Heliosphere and undergo diffusion, convection, magnetic drift and adiabatic energy loss. The result is a reduction of particles flux at low energy (below 10 GeV), called solar modulation. We realized a quasi time-dependent 2D Stochastic Simulation of Solar Modulation that is able to reproduce CR spectra once known the Local Interstellar Spectrum (LIS). We were able to estimate the different behaviors associated to the polarity dependence of the Heliospheric modulation for particles as well as for antiparticles. We show a good agreement with the antiproton/proton ratio measured by AMS-01, Pamela, BESS, Heat and Caprice and we performed a prediction for the AMS-02 Experiment.

Abstract

Spectra of Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) measured at the Earth are the combination of several processes: sources production and acceleration, propagation in the interstellar medium and propagation in the heliosphere. Inside the solar cavity the intensity of GCRs is reduced due to the solar modulation, the interaction which they have with the interplanetary medium. We realized a 2D stochastic simulation of solar modulation to reproduce CR spectra at the Earth, and evaluated the importance in our results of the Local Interstellar Spectrum (LIS) model and its agreement with data at high energy. We show a good agreement between our model and the data taken by AMS-01 and BESS experiments during periods with different solar activity conditions. Furthermore we made a prediction for the differential intensity which will be measured by AMS-02 experiment.

Abstract

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) is going to be launched next February 2011 from the Kennedy Space Center. It will be located by the Space Shuttle on the International Space Station and will have its same lifetime: 10 years or even more. The experiment will observe high energy gamma-ray photons from several Astrophysical sources. We consider here the AMS-02 single-photon-mode, i.e. gamma ray photons revealed by the ECAL through electromagnetic shower production. By means of Monte Carlo simulations and Test Beam data, we present a preliminary approach to the gamma-ray photon selection procedure and discuss the potentiality of the detector.

Abstract

The solar modulation, a combination of diffusion, convection, magnetic drift and energy loss inside the heliosphere is usually seen as a depletion in the Galactic cosmic ray (CR) flux at low energy (less than 10 GeV/nuc). Antiparticles such as antiprotons or positrons undergo the same processes of respective particles but with a different magnitude depending on the Solar magnetic field polarity. For electrons and positrons, due to the small mass, energy loss mechanisms as inverse compton, synchrotron, bremsstrahlung and ionization have to be taken into account, together with the typical adiabatic losses considered in the heliosphere. We developed a Monte Carlo stochastic simulation with the aim to compare the solar modulation of particles and antiparticles in the same observation period. We are able to estimate the different behaviours associated to the charge sign dependent processes of the heliospheric modulation. We compared the simulated positron fraction with measurements performed by AMS-01 and PAMELA. We also present the prediction for the AMS-02 experiment.

Abstract

Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCR) entering the Heliosphere are a®ected by the solar modulation, a combination of di®usion, convection, magnetic drift and adiabatic energy loss usually seen as a decrease in the °ux at low energy (less than » 10 GeV). We have improved a quasi time-dependent 2D Stochastic Simulation code describing this e®ects. We focused our attention on the electron modulation, adding energy losses in the Heliosphere that can be neglected for protons and ions: inverse Compton, ionization, synchrotron and bremsstrahlung. These effects have been evaluated in the region affected by the solar magnetic field, up to 100 AU, where the environment conditions are not constant, especially the magnetic field intensity and the photon density. In our calculation the inverse compton energy losses are dominant, but they contribute only a few percent in comparison with the adiabatic losses. We also compared the Local Interstellar Spectrum (LIS) of primary electrons with experimental data collected in the past years at energies > 20 GeV. We found that, inside one standard deviation, LIS fits the data and can be used in a Monte carlo code reproducing CR propagation in the Heliosphere.

Abstract

We implemented a quasi time-dependent 2-D stochastic model of solar modulation describing the transport of cosmic rays (CR) in the heliosphere. Our code can modulate the Local Interstellar Spectrum (LIS) of a generic charged particle (light cosmic ions and electrons), calculating the spectrum at 1 AU. Several measurements of CR antiparticles have been performed. Here we focused our attention on the CR antiproton component and the antiproton over proton ratio. We show that our model, using the same heliospheric parameters for both particles, fit the observed p̄/p ratio. We show a good agreement with BESS-97 and PAMELA data and make a prediction for the AMS-02 experiment.

Abstract

n the space radiation environment, instruments undergo radiation damage. For testing their reliability one has to know the fluxes of energetic particles and has to be able to quantify their energy deposition. The GEANT4 toolkit, via its multilevel approach, enables physicists to reproduce the space radiation environment. In this work we report the results obtained with an improved implementation of the already existing single scattering model allowing the simulation of the recoil of high energy ions. This gives the possibility to calculate the Coulomb scattering contribution to the Non-Ionizing Energy Loss (NIEL) for the complete energy range of interest. Moreover the Galactic Cosmic Ray fluxes of the ISO model 15390 have been introduced in GEANT4

Abstract

We investigate the contribution of shocks amplified magnetic field in turbulent fluids to reentrant particle effect. More specifically we focused our attention on the reentrant particles influence to the solar modulation of energetic particles, in the heliosphere, in particular with amplified fields close to the termination shock. A simple I D model of heliosphere is used for a first approximation of modulation in such a case. The parameters of simulations are mean free paths of particles in heliosphere and in interstellar magnetic field. Mean free paths are scaled to multiplication of particle gyroradius. In Hel iosphere we use Paker's field amplified close to the termination shock and in interstellar space we test a set of possible values of magnetic field. © 2010 by World Scientific Publishing Co. Abstract

We developed a two dimensional (2D) Stochastic Montecarlo code for the Cosmic Rays propagation in the Heliosphere. We used the most recent observations in order to model drift, polar field geometry and Solar Wind latitudinal dependence and to reproduce the measured fluxes. We tested 3 different drift models and compared results with data of AMS-01, IMAX, CAPRICE and BESS 2002, finding the best set of parameters for different periods of solar activity

Abstract

During the last year the Gamma-Ray sky has glowed of new light: The PAMELA experiment, the Pierre Auger Observatory, the AGILE satellite, and the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope are contributing in an unprecedented way to the unveiling of the cosmic distribution of gamma-ray sources and their viable relation with cosmic rays. The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, to be launched next July 2010, will add, for the first time, a precious energetic window, up to a few TeV, to this exciting investigation. We analyze the perspectives of AMS results and the possibilities for the detection of Galactic and Extragalactic gammaray astrophysical sources like Pulsars, Microquasars, Gamma-Ray Bursts, and Active Galactic Nuclei. © 2010 by World Scientific Publishing Co. Abstract

Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCRs) entering the Heliosphere experience diffusion, convection, magnetic drift and adiabatic energy loss (the so called solar modulation). We realized a quasi time-dependent 2D Stochastic Simulation of Heliosphere to describe GCRs modulation. The program takes into account co-latitudinal Solar Wind (SW) dependence, charge drift effects and a mofied Parker field in the polar regions. Our model was used to reproduce proton fluxes measured during low solar activity, (AMS-01, Caprice, IMAX) in periods with positive field polarity, and during high solar activity in periods with negative field polarity (BESS 2002). We finally present the prediction of the proton flux as will be measured by the AMS-02 (2010-2012), during high solar activity and negative field polarity

Abstract

Measurement of the chemical and isotopic composition of cosmic rays is essential for the precise understanding of their propagation in the galaxy. While the model parameters are mainly determined using the B/C ratio, the study of extended sets of ratios can provide stronger constraints on the propagation models. In this paper, the relative abundances of light-nuclei lithium, beryllium, boron, and carbon are presented. The secondary-to-primary ratios Li/C, Be/C, and B/C have been measured in the kinetic energy range 0.35-45 GeV nucleon-1. The isotopic ratio 7Li/6Li is also determined in the magnetic rigidity interval 2.5-6.3 GV. The secondary-to-secondary ratios Li/Be, Li/B, and Be/B are also reported. These measurements are based on the data collected by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer AMS-01 during the STS-91 space shuttle flight in 1998 June. Our experimental results are in substantial agreement with other measurements, where they exist. We describe our light-nuclei data with a diffusive-reacceleration model. A 10%-15% overproduction of Be is found in the model predictions and can be attributed to uncertainties in the production cross-section data. © 2010. The American Astronomical Society.

244. Fluxes and Nuclear Abundances of Cosmic Rays inside the Magnetosphere using a Transmission Function Approach

Abstract

At 1 AU and outside the Earth's magnetosphere, the relative abundances to protons for He (He/p), C (C/p) and Fe (Fe/p) nuclei were calculated using the observation-data of AMS-01 (for p and He) and HEAO-3 (for C and Fe) above 0.8 GeV/nucleon. In addition, the transmission function (TF) for the GCR propagation inside the magnetosphere was evaluated using the IGRF and T96 (introduced by Tsyganenko and Stern) models to obtain permitted and forbidden trajectories inside the magnetosphere. The TF allowed one to derive the primary He-nuclei fluxes in the same geomagnetic regions of AMS-01 observations. These fluxes were found in good agreement with the observation data. Furthermore inside the magnetosphere in addition to the flux of helium, it allowed one to obtain those of the primary p, C, and Fe nuclei and the relative abundances of He, C and Fe nuclei to protons from the same observation-data of AMS-01 and HEAO-3 above 0.8 GeV/nucleon. Up to a geomagnetic latitude of 45.84 deg, the relative isotopic abundances were found to depend on the mass number I_isot and, on average, range from a factor 2.31 up to 3.35 larger than those outside the magnetosphere at 1 AU. Thus, the magnetospheric isotopic/nuclear relative-abundances differ from those inside the solar cavity and those in the interstellar space. The usage of the TF approach can allow one to determine the nuclear abundances in the magnetosphere at any geomagnetic latitude and, thus, any orbit, provided that the CR spectra are determined at 1 AU.

Abstract

We have evaluated Cosmic Ray trajectories inside the magnetosphere and defined a Transmission Function (TF) for the CR penetration. We have then computed the TF for Helium, Carbon and Iron nuclei. Finally the flux of primary CR Helium, Carbon and Iron has been evaluated inside the magnetosphere. The results have then been compared with calculations for protons and also with experimental data collected by AMS-01 and HEAO-3

Abstract

We developed a 2D Stochastic Monte Carlo model for Cosmic Rays propagation in the Heliosphere. The model solves numerically the transport equation of particles in the heliosphere, including major processes affecting the heliospheric particle transport: diffusion, convection, adiabatic energy losses and drift of particles. We evaluated the modulated flux at several distances from the Sun (i.e. at planetary distances) and compared our results for both solar polarities with measurements of CR protons at the Earth distance, 1 AU.

247. Reentrant heliospheric particles in 2D drift model

Abstract

We developed 2D time dependent heliospheric model where particles trajectory are reconstructed back in time. The model is time dependent due to drifts in the heliosphere. We followed particles also after escaping the heliosphere in the interstellar space to found the fraction of them that reenter back again into the heliosphere. We show how this effect can change the modulation of particles in the heliosphere for different solar periods and for different orientation and strength of interstellar magnetic field. The dependence of modulation process in the heliosphere from reentrant particles is discussed in connection to particles mean free path in the interstellar space

Abstract

We developed a one dimensional model of particle transport in the heliosphere. As opposite to widely used models, we apply a method where a quasi-particle is traced back in time. The model gives us the possibility to work on the possible existence of reentrant particles in the heliosphere that can be hardly solved by the traditional forward tracking method. Particles escape from the heliosphere and may reenter back. We estimate how these particles affect the modulation process in the heliosphere. Presented here are the results for different values of particles mean free path in the interstellar space and for different interstellar magnetic field values
