Abstract

This data article provides time series on euro area industrial new orders and is related to the research article entitled “Modelling industrial new orders” (G.J. de Bondt, H.C. Dieden, S. Muzikarova, I. Vincze, 2014b) [3]. The data are in index format with a fixed base year (currently 2010) for total new orders as well as a number of breakdowns. The euro area data are based on the official national data for countries that still collect data and on European Central Bank (ECB) model estimates for countries that discontinued the data collection. The weighting scheme to calculate euro area aggregates makes use of country weights derived from industrial turnover statistics as published by Eurostat.

213. Alcohol, clan councils and colloquial understandings of the state in rural Uganda

Abstract

“You see, courts do not settle disputes. If you bring a civil case to the magistrate court (…) would they in the end become friends?” The community liaison officer I spoke to during my fieldwork period in Uganda pointed out an important difference between the courts and traditional forms of authority: whereas courts give judgements, traditional authorities try to harmonise their community. In Uganda, as in many African countries, traditional authorities are important institutions that contribute to the provision of welfare services and settle disputes in rural communities. They provide access to healthcare, monetary aid in the form of money lending services, and help to settle disputes in their localities. At times their voices take precedence over the district government, meaning that they are often at odds with local government institutions. In this dissertation, I study the relationship between government institutions and clan councils. I ethnographically explore how people working for these institutions relate to, cooperate and compete with each other for sovereignty in the district. To address these issues, the main research question is: ‘How do understandings of sovereignty in Kisoro District, rural Uganda play out in the relationship between government institutions and clan institutions?’. The research is based on nine months of ethnographic fieldwork (2018-2019), during which I lived in the area, participated in and observed at various institutes, and conducted many interviews with people from the area. I show how popular ideas about ‘the state’ and ‘the clan’ gain meaning through everyday encounters between residents, government officials, and clan councillors, and how they greatly influence decision making practices at the local level. In discussions with the laying hen sector and other experts, insight has been gained into the consequences of the (partial) loss of subsidies for salmonella vaccination. Will vaccination rates and costs for the sector change? Most (rearing) laying hen farmers will probably continue to vaccinate against salmonella, at least against S.e. Some of the determining factors are IKB Ei obligations and the risks of economic losses., In gesprekken met de legpluimveesector en andere experts is inzicht verkregen in de gevolgen van het (deels) wegvallen van subsidies voor salmonellavaccinatie. Zullen de vaccinatiegraad en de kosten voor de sector veranderen? De meeste (opfok) legpluimveehouders zullen waarschijnlijk blijven vaccineren tegen salmonella, in elk geval tegen S.e. Enkele bepalende factoren zijn de IKB Ei-verplichtingen en de risico’s van economische schade.

This report provides insight into the current method of tariff differentiation between planned and regular stops when collecting rendering material from Dutch livestock farms. A differentiation between the rates of regular and scheduled stops contributes to the efficiency of the collection and processing process. The elimination of this tariff difference will most likely lead to an increase in supply and a decrease in efficiency and an increase in costs., Dit rapport geeft inzicht in de huidige manier van tariefdifferentiatie tussen geplande en reguliere stops bij het ophalen van destructiemateriaal van Nederlandse veehouderijbedrijven. Een differentiatie tussen de tarieven van reguliere en geplande stops draagt bij aan de efficiëntie van het ophaal- en verwerkingsproces. Een wegvallen van dit tariefverschil zal naar alle waarschijnlijkheid leiden tot een toename van het aanbod en een afname van de efficiëntie en verhoging van de kosten.

Companies in the UK egg sector have to comply with legislation on animal welfare, food safety and environmental protection. Whereas the legislation aims to guarantee comprehensive high quality production, it also confronts the sector with additional costs. Countries outside the UK do not have the same extensive legislation. This report presents the results of a study on the competitiveness of the UK egg sector. The production costs for eggs and egg products are calculated for the UK and several EU and non-EU countries. Different scenarios are outlined to illustrate the impact of changes in import levies and exchange rates.

A short exploratory study looked at what dairy goat farmers could do to improve biodiversity. There are numerous possibilities, including on the own yard, the own land and through feed measures. It is important not only to look at the ‘technical’ possibilities for improving biodiversity, but also to pay sufficient attention to support among farmers and economic aspects., Door een kort verkennend onderzoek is bekeken wat melkgeitenhouders zouden kunnen doen aan het verbeteren van de biodiversiteit. Er zijn tal van mogelijkheden, onder andere op het eigen erf, op de eigen grond en door voermaatregelen. Het is belangrijk om niet alleen te kijken naar de ‘technische’ mogelijkheden voor verbetering van de biodiversiteit, maar ook voldoende aandacht te besteden aan draagvlak en economische aspecten.

Abstract

Purpose: Activating ALK mutations are present in almost 10% of primary neuroblastomas and mark patients for treatment with small-molecule ALK inhibitors in clinical trials. However, recent studies have shown that multiple mechanisms drive resistance to these molecular therapies. We anticipated that detailed mapping of the oncogenic ALK-driven signaling in neuroblastoma can aid to identify potential fragile nodes as additional targets for combination therapies.Experimental Design: To achieve this goal, transcriptome profiling was performed in neuroblastoma cell lines with the ALKF1174L or ALKR1275Q hotspot mutations, ALK amplification, or wild-type ALK following pharmacologic inhibition of ALK using four different compounds. Next, we performed cross-species genomic analyses to identify commonly transcriptionally perturbed genes in MYCN/ALKF1174L double transgenic versus MYCN transgenic mouse tumors as compared with the mutant ALK-driven transcriptome in human neuroblastomas.Results: A 77-gene ALK signature was established and successfully validated in primary neuroblastoma samples, in a neuroblastoma cell line with ALKF1174L and ALKR1275Q regulable overexpression constructs and in other ALKomas. In addition to the previously established PI3K/AKT/mTOR, MAPK/ERK, and MYC/MYCN signaling branches, we identified that mutant ALK drives a strong upregulation of MAPK negative feedback regulators and upregulates RET and RET-driven sympathetic neuronal markers of the cholinergic lineage.Conclusions: We provide important novel insights into the transcriptional consequences and the complexity of mutant ALK signaling in this aggressive pediatric tumor. The negative feedback loop of MAPK pathway inhibitors may affect novel ALK inhibition therapies, whereas mutant ALK induced RET signaling can offer novel opportunities for testing ALK-RET oriented molecular combination therapies. Abstract

In an effort to find a novel way to enhance the attractiveness of healthy food, this article proposes surface mimicry—that is, designing a product to visually resemble another product—as an effective intervention to communicate property information to consumers. Specifically, it advances the notion that exposure to surface mimicry primes property mapping, a thinking style that leads consumers to transfer property information from one product onto another. To this end, three studies show that exposure to a target food product (e.g., kiwifruit) mimicking visual characteristics of another, modifier food product (e.g., popsicle) induces a transfer of attribute values of the modifier onto the target product for salient, alignable attributes on which the products differ (e.g., tastiness). A fourth study points to the activation of a property-mapping mindset as the underlying process. Finally, the effect is shown to persist, but it attenuates when the difference in belief(s) about the target and mimicked product is substantial (e.g., the taste expectations for Brussels sprouts and popsicles).

234. The Effect of Wet Milling and Cryogenic Milling on the Structure and Physicochemical Properties of Wheat Bran

Abstract

Wheat bran consumption is associated with several health benefits, but its incorporation into food products remains low because of sensory and technofunctional issues. Besides, its full beneficial potential is probably not achieved because of its recalcitrant nature and inaccessible structure. Particle size reduction can affect both technofunctional and nutrition-related properties. Therefore, in this study, wet milling and cryogenic milling, two techniques that showed potential for extreme particle size reduction, were used. The effect of the milling techniques, performed on laboratory and large scale, was evaluated on the structure and physicochemical properties of wheat bran. With a median particle size (d50) of 6 µm, the smallest particle size was achieved with cryogenic milling on a laboratory scale. Cryogenic milling on a large scale and wet milling on laboratory and large scale resulted in a particle size reduction to a d50 of 28–38 µm. In the milled samples, the wheat bran structure was broken down, and almost all cells were opened. Wet milling on laboratory and large scale resulted in bran with a more porous structure, a larger surface area and a higher capacity for binding water compared to cryogenic milling on a large scale. The extensive particle size reduction by cryogenic milling on a laboratory scale resulted in wheat bran with the highest surface area and strong water retention capacity. Endogenous enzyme activity and mechanical breakdown during the different milling procedures resulted in different extents of breakdown of starch, sucrose, β-glucan, arabinoxylan and phytate. Therefore, the diverse impact of the milling techniques on the physicochemical properties of wheat bran could be used to target different technofunctional and health-related properties.

Abstract

Ice cores provide temporal records of surface mass balance (SMB). Coastal areas of Antarctica have relatively high and variable SMB, but are under-represented in records spanning more than 100 years. Here we present SMB reconstruction from a 120 m-long ice core drilled in 2012 on the Derwael Ice Rise, coastal Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica. Water stable isotope (δ18O and δD) stratigraphy is supplemented by discontinuous major ion profiles and continuous electrical conductivity measurements. The base of the ice core is dated to AD 1759 ± 16, providing a climate proxy for the past ∼ 250 years. The core's annual layer thickness history is combined with its gravimetric density profile to reconstruct the site's SMB history, corrected for the influence of ice deformation. The mean SMB for the core's entire history is 0.47 ± 0.02 m water equivalent (w.e.) a−1. The time series of reconstructed annual SMB shows high variability, but a general increase beginning in the 20th century. This increase is particularly marked during the last 50 years (1962–2011), which yields mean SMB of 0.61 ± 0.01 m w.e. a−1. This trend is compared with other reported SMB data in Antarctica, generally showing a high spatial variability. Output of the fully coupled Community Earth System Model (CESM) suggests that, although atmospheric circulation is the main factor influencing SMB, variability in sea surface temperatures and sea ice cover in the precipitation source region also explain part of the variability in SMB. Local snow redistribution can also influence interannual variability but is unlikely to influence long-term trends significantly. This is the first record from a coastal ice core in East Antarctica to show an increase in SMB beginning in the early 20th century and particularly marked during the last 50 years.
