Experimental motion capture studies have commonly considered the foot as a single rigid body even though the foot contains 26 bones and 30 joints. Various methods have been applied to study rigid body deviations of the foot. This study compared 3 methods: distal foot power (DFP), foot power imbalance (FPI), and a 2-segment foot model to study foot power and work in the takeoff phase of standing vertical jumps. Six physically active participants each performed 6 standing vertical jumps from a starting position spanning 2 adjacent force platforms to allow ground reaction forces acting on the foot to be divided at the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints. Shortly after movement initiation, DFP showed a power absorption phase followed by a power generation phase. FPI followed a similar pattern with smaller power absorption and a larger power generation compared to DFP. MTP joints primarily generated power in the 2-segment model. The net foot work was –4.0 (1.0) J using DFP, 1.8 (1.1) J using FPI, and 5.1 (0.5) J with MTP. The results suggest that MTP joints are only 1 source of foot power and that differences between DFP and FPI should be further explored in jumping and other movements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nine behavior-analytic studies, each reporting data for a single participant, have shown that bizarre speech can be maintained by social reinforcement. In the current study, we controlled for a possible referral bias in this literature by including nonreferred participants with dual diagnoses. Functional analyses identified attention functions for 2 participants and nonsocial functions for the others. Noncontingent reinforcement decreased the bizarre speech of both participants who displayed attention-maintained bizarre speech.

Background Non– Enterococcus faecium, non– E. faecalis (NFF) enterococci are a heterogeneous group of clinically pathogenic enterococci that include species with intrinsic low-level vancomycin resistance. Patients with cancer are at increased risk for bacteremia with NFF enterococci, but their clinical and molecular epidemiology have not been extensively described. Methods We conducted a retrospective review of all patients (n = 70) with NFF bacteremia from 2016 to 2022 at a major cancer center. The main outcomes assessed were 30-day mortality, microbiological failure (positive blood cultures for ≥4 days), and recurrence of bacteremia (positive blood culture <14 days after clearance). Whole-genome sequencing was performed on all available NFF (n = 65). Results Patients with hematological malignancies made up 56% of the cohort (77% had leukemia). The majority of solid malignancies (87%) were gastrointestinal in origin. The majority of infections (83%) originated from an intra-abdominal source. The most common NFF species were E. gallinarum (50%) and E. casseliflavus (30%). Most (61%) patients received combination therapy. Bacteremia recurred in 4.3% of patients, there was a 30-day mortality of 23%, and 4.3% had microbiological failure. E. gallinarum and E. casseliflavus isolates were genetically diverse with no spatiotemporal clustering to suggest a single strain. Frequencies of ampicillin resistance (4.3%) and daptomycin resistance (1.9%) were low. Patients with hematologic malignancy had infections with NFF enterococci that harbored more resistance genes than patients with solid malignancy (P =.005). Conclusions NFF bacteremia is caused by a heterogeneous population of isolates and is associated with significant mortality. Hematological malignancy is an important risk factor for infection with NFF resistant to multiple antibiotics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is present in high amounts in salivary glands, but it is unclear whether labeled binders of PSMA are excreted in the saliva. Methods: Ten patients with prostate cancer underwent whole-body [18F]DCFPyL PET/CT (NCT03181867), and saliva samples were collected between 0-120 minutes post-injection. [18F]DCFPyL salivary excretion was measured over 120 minutes and expressed as %ID/g. Protein-associated binding was estimated by the percentage of [18F]DCFPyL versus parent radiotracer. Results: All PET scans of 10 patients (69 ± 8 years) with histologically confirmed prostate cancer (PSA= 2.4 ± 2.4, and Gleason Grade = 6-9) showed high uptake of [18F]-DCFPyL in salivary glands while 8 patients demonstrated high uptake in the saliva at 45 minutes. The intact [18F]-DCFPyL (98%) was also confirmed in the saliva samples at 120 min with increasing salivary radioactivity between 30-120 min. Conclusion: Systemically injected [18F]DCFPyL shows salivary gland uptake, an increasing amount of which is secreted in saliva over time and is not maximized by 120 minutes post-injection. Although probably insignificant for diagnostic studies, patients undergoing PSMA-targeted therapies should be aware of radioactivity in saliva. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The overabundance of large herbivores can have detrimental effects on the local environment due to overgrazing. Culling is a common management practice implemented globally that can effectively control herbivore populations and allow vegetation communities to recover. However, the broader indirect effects of culling large herbivores remain relatively unknown, particularly on insect species such as ground-dwelling beetles that perform key ecosystem processes such as decomposition. Here we undertook a preliminary investigation to determine how culling sika deer on an island in North Japan impacted ground-beetle community dynamics. We conducted pitfall trapping in July and September in 2012 (before culling) and again in 2019 (after culling). We compared beetle abundance and community composition within 4 beetle families (Carabidae, Scarabaeidae, Geotrupidae, and Silphidae), across seasons and culling treatments. We found each family responded differently to deer culling. Scarabaeidae displayed the greatest decline in abundance after culling. Silphidae also had reduced abundance but to a lesser extent compared to Scarabaeidae. Carabidae had both higher and lower abundance after culling, depending on the season. We found beetle community composition differed between culling and season, but seasonal variability was reduced after culling. Overall, the culling of large herbivores resulted in a reduction of ground-dwelling beetle populations, particularly necrophagous species dependent on dung and carrion for survival. Our preliminary research highlights the need for long-term and large-scale experiments to understand the indirect ecological implications of culling programs on ecosystem processes.
