Abstract: A flare from the TeV blazar Mrk 421, occurring in March 2010, was observed for 13 consecutive days from radio to very high energy (VHE, E > 100 GeV) gamma-rays with MAGIC, VERITAS, Whipple, FermiLAT, MAXI, RXTE, Swift, GASP-WEBT, and several optical and radio telescopes. We model the day-scale SEDs with one-zone and two-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) models, investigate the physical parameters, and evaluate whether the observed broadband SED variability can be associated to variations in the relativistic particle population. Flux variability was remarkable in the X-ray and VHE bands while it was minor or not significant in the other bands. The one-zone SSC model can describe reasonably well the SED of each day for the 13 consecutive days. This flaring activity is also very well described by a two-zone SSC model, where one zone is responsible for the quiescent emission while the other smaller zone, which is spatially separated from the first one, contributes to the daily-variable emission occurring in X-rays and VHE gamma-rays. Both the one-zone SSC and the two-zone SSC models can describe the daily SEDs via the variation of only four or five model parameters, under the hypothesis that the variability is associated mostly to the underlying particle population. This shows that the particle acceleration and cooling mechanism producing the radiating particles could be the main one responsible for the broadband SED variations during the flaring episodes in blazars. The two-zone SSC model provides a better agreement to the observed SED at the narrow peaks of the low- and high-energy bumps during the highest activity, although the reported one-zone SSC model could be further improved by the variation of the parameters related to the emitting region itself ($\delta$, $B$ and $R$), in addition to the parameters related to the particle population., Comment: Published in A&A, 30 pages, 15 figures, 6 tables. Abstract: X-ray polarimetry has great scientific potential and new experiments, such as X-Calibur, PoGOLite, XIPE, and GEMS, will not only be orders of magnitude more sensitive than previous missions, but also provide the capability to measure polarization over a wide energy range. However, the measured spectra depend on the collection area, detector responses, and, in case of balloon-borne experiments, the absorption of X-rays in the atmosphere, all of which are energy dependent. Combined with the typically steep source spectra, this leads to significant biases that need to be taken into account to correctly reconstruct energy-resolved polarization properties. In this paper, we present a method based on an iterative unfolding algorithm that makes it possible to simultaneously reconstruct the energy spectrum and the polarization properties as a function of true photon energy. We apply the method to a simulated X-Calibur data set and show that it is able to recover both the energy spectrum and the energy-dependent polarization fraction., 12 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Astropart. Abstract: We present results from VERITAS observations of the BL Lac object PG 1553+113 spanning the years 2010, 2011, and 2012. The time-averaged spectrum, measured between 160 and 560\,GeV, is well described by a power law with a spectral index of $4.33 \pm 0.09$. The time-averaged integral flux above $200\,$GeV measured for this period was $(1.69 \pm 0.06) \times 10^{-11} \, \mathrm{ph} \, \mathrm{cm}^{-2} \, \mathrm{s}^{-1}$, corresponding to 6.9\% of the Crab Nebula flux. We also present the combined $\gamma$-ray spectrum from the Fermi Large Area Telescope and VERITAS covering an energy range from 100~MeV to 560~GeV. The data are well fit by a power law with an exponential cutoff at $\rm {101.9 \pm 3.2 \, \mathrm{GeV}} $. The origin of the cutoff could be intrinsic to PG~1553+113 or be due to the $\gamma$-ray opacity of our universe through pair production off the extragalactic background light (EBL). Given lower limits to the redshift of $\rm z \negthinspace > \negthinspace 0.395$ based on optical/UV observations of PG~1553+113, the cutoff would be dominated by EBL absorption. Conversely, the small statistical uncertainties of the VERITAS energy spectrum have allowed us to provide a robust upper limit on the redshift of PG 1553+113 of $z \negthinspace \leq \negthinspace 0.62$. A strongly-elevated mean flux of $(2.50 \pm 0.14) \times 10^{-11} \, \mathrm{ph} \, \mathrm{cm}^{-2} \, \mathrm{s}^{-1}$ (10.3\% of the Crab Nebula flux) was observed during 2012, with the daily flux reaching as high as $(4.44 \pm 0.71) \times 10^{-11} \, \mathrm{ph} \, \mathrm{cm}^{-2} \, \mathrm{s}^{-1}$ (18.3\% of the Crab Nebula flux) on MJD 56048. The light curve measured during the 2012 observing season is marginally inconsistent with a steady flux, giving a $\chi^2$ probability for a steady flux of 0.03\%., Comment: in press in ApJ, 2014

Abstract: X-ray polarimetry holds the promise to resolve the inner regions of compact systems like mass accreting black holes in X-ray binaries and X-ray bright neutron stars. For example, spectropolarimetric observations of pulsars and pulsar wind nebulae can constrain the geometry and locale of particle acceleration in these sources. We designed and built X-Calibur, a hard x-ray polarimeter which was flown in the focal plane of the InFOCµS grazing incidence mirror in the fall of 2014 from Fort Sumner (NM). Additional flights are planned for the fall of 2016 from Fort Sumner, as well as for the 2018/19 Antarctic season from McMurdo (Antarctica). X-Calibur exploits the fact that polarized photons scatter preferentially in a direction orthogonal to the orientation of their electric field vector. By combining a low-Z scattering slab with high-Z Cadmium Zinc Telluride detectors to photo-absorb the scattered X-rays, X-Calibur achieves a high detection efficiency of almost unity and a large modulation factor. We have calibrated and tested X-Calibur extensively in the laboratory at Washington University and at the Cornell High-Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS). Measurements using the highly polarized synchrotron beam at CHESS confirm the polarization sensitivity of the instrument. In this paper we report on the design of X-Calibur, results of laboratory calibration measurements characterizing the performance of the instrument, as well as background measurements taken during the first flight.

Abstract: Mkn 421 was observed during a high flux state for nine nights in April and May 2004 with the fully operational High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) in Namibia. The observations were carried out at zenith angles of 60$^\circ$--65$^\circ$, which result in an average energy threshold of 1.5 TeV and a collection area reaching 2~km$^2$ at 10~TeV. Roughly 7000 photons from Mkn~421 were accumulated with an average gamma-ray rate of 8 photons/min. The overall significance of the detection exceeds 100 standard deviations. The light-curve of integrated fluxes above 2~TeV shows changes of the diurnal flux up to a factor of 4.3. For nights of high flux, intra-night variability is detected with a decay time of less than 1 hour. The time averaged energy spectrum is curved and is well described by a power-law with a photon index $\egamm$ and an exponential cutoff at $\ecut$~TeV and an average integral flux above 2~TeV of 3 Crab flux units. Significant variations of the spectral shape are detected with a spectral hardening as the flux increases. Contemporaneous multi-wavelength observations at lower energies (X-rays and gamma-rays above $\approx 300$~GeV) indicate smaller relative variability amplitudes than seen above 2~TeV during high flux state observed in April 2004., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, published in A&A

Abstract: We report on VERITAS very high energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) observations of six blazars selected from the Fermi Large Area Telescope First Source Catalog (1FGL). The gamma-ray emission from 1FGL sources was extrapolated up to the VHE band, taking gamma-ray absorption by the extragalactic background light into account. This allowed the selection of six bright, hard-spectrum blazars that were good candidate TeV emitters. Spectroscopic redshift measurements were attempted with the Keck Telescope for the targets without Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopic data. No VHE emission is detected during the observations of the six sources described here. Corresponding TeV upper limits are presented, along with contemporaneous Fermi observations and non-concurrent Swift UVOT and X-Ray Telescope data. The blazar broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are assembled and modeled with a single-zone synchrotron self-Compton model. The SED built for each of the six blazars shows a synchrotron peak bordering between the intermediate- and high-spectrum-peak classifications, with four of the six resulting in particle-dominated emission regions. 208. Acute emergency care and airway management of caustic ingestion in adults: single center observational study

Abstract: Background: Caustic ingestions are rare but potentially life-threatening events requiring multidisciplinary emergency approaches. Although particularly respiratory functions may be impaired after caustic ingestions, studies involving acute emergency care are scarce. The goal of this study was to explore acute emergency care with respect to airway management and emergency department (ED) infrastructures. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated adult patients after caustic ingestions admitted to our university hospital over a 10-year period (2005–2014). Prognostic analysis included age, morbidity, ingested agent, airway management, interventions (endoscopy findings, computed tomography (CT), surgical procedures), intensive care unit (ICU) admission, length of stay in hospital and hospital mortality. Results: Twenty-eight patients with caustic ingestions were included in the analysis of which 18 (64 %) had suicidal intentions. Ingested agents were caustic alkalis (n = 22; 79 %) and acids (n = 6; 21 %). ICU admission was required in 20 patients (71 %). Fourteen patients (50 %) underwent tracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation, of which 3 (21 %) presented with difficult airways. Seven patients (25 %) underwent tracheotomy including one requiring awake tracheotomy due to progressive upper airway obstruction. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) was performed in 21 patients (75 %) and 11 (39 %) underwent CT examination. Five patients (18 %) required emergency surgery with a mortality of 60 %. Overall hospital mortality was 18 % whereas the need for tracheal intubation (P = 0.012), CT-diagnostic (P = 0.001), higher EGD score (P = 0.006), tracheotomy (P = 0.048), and surgical interventions (P = 0.005) were significantly associated with mortality. Abstract: The Crab supernova remnant has been observed regularly with the stereoscopic system of 5 imaging air Cherenkov telescopes that was part of the High Energy Gamma Ray Astronomy (HEGRA) experiment. In total, close to 400 hours of useful data have been collected from 1997 until 2002. The spectrum extends up to energies of 80 TeV and is well matched by model calculations in the framework of inverse Compton scattering of various seed photons in the nebula including for the first time a recently detected compact emission region at mm-wavelengths. The observed indications for a gradual steepening of the energy spectrum in data is expected in the inverse Compton emission model.The average magnetic field in the emitting volume is determined to be $(161.6\pm0.8mathrm{stat}\pm18_\mathrm{sys}) \mu$G. The presence of protons in the nebula is not required to explain the observed flux and upper limits on the injected power of protons are calculated being as low as 20 % of the total spin down luminosity for bulk Lorentz factors of the wind in the range of $10^4-10^6$.The position and size of the emission region have been studied over a wide range of energies. The position is shifted by 13\arcsec to the west of the pulsar with a systematic uncertainty of 25\arcsec. No significant shift in the position with energy is observed. The size of the emission region is constrained to be less than 2\arcmin at energies between 1 and 10 TeV. Above 30 TeV the size is constrained to be less than 3\arcmin.No indications for pulsed emission has been found and upper limits in differential bins of energy have been calculated reaching typically 1-3 % of the unpulsed component., Comment: 53 pages, 12 figures. Abstract: The giant radio galaxy M87, well studied from radio to X-ray energies, is located in the Virgo cluster of galaxies at a distance of ∼16 Mpc (redshift z=0.00436). M87 has been observed with the HEGRA stereoscopic system of five Cherenkov telescopes in the years 1998 and 1999 for more than 80 h. An excess of TeV γ-rays on the 4σ level has been found in the data corresponding to an integral flux (E>730 GeV) of 3.3% of the Crab nebula flux. The HEGRA detection – if confirmed – would make M87 the first TeV γ-ray emitting AGN observed with the imaging atmospheric Cherenkov technique not belonging to the BL Lac class.

Abstract: The array of 5 imaging atmospheric y Cerenkov telescopes (IACTs) deployed at La Palma (Canary Islands), and operated by the HEGRA (High Energy Gamma Ray Astronomy) collaboration, was used for observations of the Monoceros Loop SNR region for a total of about 120 hrs and 20 hrs in ON-source and OFF-source mode, respectively. The giant molecular cloud Rosette Nebula appears in the sky region, close to the south-east part of the SNR rim. Using the HEGRA system of IACTs of rather large field of view (4.3 degree in diameter), we have mapped the extended sky region of 3 ◦ × 3 ◦ associated with the Monoceros SNR/Rosette Nebula, which is centered towards the hard spectrum X-ray point source SAX J0635+533. The EGRET unidentified source of diffuse γ-ray emission (3EG J0634+0521) observed in the energy range between 100 MeV-10 GeV, was effectively in the field of view of our present observations. Also, the GeV source GeV J0633+0645 was within the available field of view. The performance of the IACTs array reveals an energy threshold of 500 GeV and an angular resolution of 0.1 ◦ for γ-rays. In what follows, we present the result of the data analysis and its physical interpretation.

Abstract: We report on the VERITAS discovery of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission above 200 GeV from the high-frequency-peaked BL Lac object RXJ0648.7+1516 (GBJ0648+1516), associated with 1FGL J0648.8+1516. The photon spectrum above 200 GeV is fit by a power law dN/dE = F0(E/E0)-Gamma with a photon index of 4.4 ± 0.8stat ± 0.3syst and a flux normalization F0 of (2.3± 0.5stat ±1.2sys)×10^-11 TeV^-1cm^-2s^-1 with E0 = 300 GeV. No VHE variability is detected during VERITAS observations of RXJ0648.7+1516 between 2010 March 4 and April 15. Following the VHE discovery, the optical identification and spectroscopic redshift were obtained using the Shane 3–m Telescope at the Lick Observatory, showing the unidentified object to be a BL Lac type with a redshift of z = 0.179. Broadband multiwavelength observations contemporaneous with the VERITAS exposure period can be used to sub-classify the blazar as a high-frequency-peaked BL Lac (HBL) object, including data from the MDM observatory, Swift -UVOT and XRT, and continuous monitoring at photon energies above 1 GeV from the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). We find that in the absence of undetected, high-energy rapid variability, the one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model (SSC) overproduces the high-energy gamma-ray emission measured by the Fermi -LAT over 2.3 years. The SED can be parameterized satisfactorily with an external-Compton or lepto-hadronic model, which have two and six additional free parameters, respectively, compared to the one-zone SSC model. Abstract: The very high energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) blazar Markarian 501 has a well-studied history of extreme spectral variability and is an excellent laboratory for studying the physical processes within the jets of active galactic nuclei. However, there are few detailed multiwavelength studies of Markarian 501 during its quiescent state, due to its low luminosity. A short-term multiwavelength study of Markarian 501 was coordinated in March 2009, focusing around a multi-day observation with the Suzaku X-ray satellite and including {\gamma}-ray data from VERITAS, MAGIC, and the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope with the goal of providing a well-sampled multiwavelength baseline measurement of Markarian 501 in the quiescent state. The results of these quiescent-state observations are compared to the historically extreme outburst of April 16, 1997, with the goal of examining variability of the spectral energy distribution between the two states. The derived broadband spectral energy distribution shows the characteristic double-peaked profile. We find that the X-ray peak shifts by over two orders of magnitude in photon energy between the two flux states while the VHE peak varies little. The limited shift in the VHE peak can be explained by the transition to the Klein-Nishina regime. Abstract: In the first months of 2001 the AGN Mkn 421 showed highly variable, strong TeV activity at flux levels frequently exceeding 1 Crab. Here we present the light curve and energy spectrum of Mkn 421 as measured with the HEGRA stand alone telescope CT1. Around 30% of the data were taken under moonlight conditions. The spectrum shows a significant exponential energy cuto at around 3.4 TeV. The results from the dark night- and the moon data are in excellent agreement with each other. A significant spectral shape variation depending on the flux level has been found. The TeV light curve is also found to be highly correlated with the X-ray light curve of the RXTE/ ASM satellite, showing no significant time lag larger than 0.2 d. The derived correlation coecient of 0.83 corresponds to a 5:2 significance.

Abstract: TeV γ-rays from the BL Lac object 1ES 1959+650 have been measured during the years 2000 and 2001 with a significance of 5.2 σ at a value of 5.3% of the Crab flux and in May 2002 during strong outbursts with >23 σ at a flux level of up to 2.2 Crab, making 1ES 1959+650 the TeV Blazar with the third best event statistics. The deep observation of 197.4 h has been performed with the HEGRA stereoscopic system of 5 imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACT system). 1ES 1959+650 is located at a redshift of z = 0.047, providing an intermediate distance between the nearby Blazars Mkn 421 and Mkn 501, and the much more distant object H1426+428. This makes 1ES 1959+650 an important member of the class of TeV Blazars in view of the absorption of TeV photons by the diffuse extragalactic background radiation (DEBRA). The differential energy spectrum of 1ES 1959+650 during the flares can be fitted by a power law with a spectral index of 2.83 ± 0.14stat ± 0.08sys or by a power law with an exponential cut-off at (4.2 +0.8 −0.6 stat ± 0.9sys) TeV and a spectral index of 1.83 ± 0.15stat ± 0.08sys. The low state differential energy spectrum obtained with lower statistics can be described by a pure power law with a spectral index of 3.18 ± 0.17stat ± 0.08sys.

Abstract: For the first time an excess of photons above an energy threshold of 730 GeV from the giant radio galaxy M87 has been measured at a significance level above 4 sigma. The data have been taken during the years 1998 and 1999 with the HEGRA stereoscopic system of 5 imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes. The excess of 107.4 +- 26.8 events above 730 GeV corresponds to an integral flux of 3.3% of the Crab flux or N_gamma(E > 730 GeV) = (0.96 +- 0.23) * 10^(-12) phot.cm^(-2)s^(-1). M87 is located at the center of the Virgo cluster of galaxies at a relatively small redshift of z = 0.00436 and is a promising candidate among the class of giant radio galaxies for the emission of TeV gamma-radiation. Abstract: We report the first detection of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission above 140 GeV from PKS 1424+240, a BL Lac object with an unknown redshift. The photon spectrum above 140 GeV measured by VERITAS is well described by a power law with a photon index of 3.8 +- 0.5_stat +- 0.3_syst and a flux normalization at 200 GeV of (5.1 +- 0.9_stat +- 0.5_syst) x 10^{-11} TeV^-1 cm^-2 s^-1, where stat and syst denote the statistical and systematical uncertainty, respectively. The VHE flux is steady over the observation period between MJD 54881 and 55003 (2009 February 19 to June 21). Flux variability is also not observed in contemporaneous high energy observations with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). Contemporaneous X-ray and optical data were also obtained from the Swift XRT and MDM observatory, respectively. The broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) is well described by a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model favoring a redshift of less than 0.1. Using the photon index measured with Fermi in combination with recent extragalactic background light (EBL) absorption models it can be concluded from the VERITAS data that the redshift of PKS 1424+240 is less than 0.66., Comment: accepted for publication, ApJ

Abstract: The nearby BL Lacertae (BL Lac) object Markarian~421 (Mkn~421) at a red shift z=0.031 was observed to undergo strong TeV Gamma-ray outbursts in the observational periods from December 1999 until May 2001. The time averaged energy spectrum is well described by a power law with an exponential cut-off energy at 3.6(+0.4-0.3)_{stat}(+0.9-0.8)_{sys} TeV. The energy spectra derived for different average flux levels ranging from 0.5 to 10 * 10^{-11}ph/cm**2/s follow a clear correlation of photon index and flux level. Generally, the energy spectra are harder for high flux levels. From January to April 2001 Mkn~421 showed rapid variability (doubling time as short as 20 minutes), accompanied with a spectral hardening with increasing flux level within individual nights. For two successive nights (MJD 51989-51991, March 21-23,2001), this correlation of spectral hardness and change in flux has been observed within a few hours. The cut-off energy for the Mkn~421 TeV spectrum remains within the errors constant for the different flux levels and differs by 2.6+/-0.6_stat+/-0.6_sys TeV from the value determined for Mkn~501. This indicates that the observed exponential cut-off in the energy spectrum of Mkn~421 is not solely caused by absorption of multi-TeV photons by pair-production processes with photons of the extragalactic near/mid infrared background radiation., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Astronomy&Astrophysics

Abstract: Zusammenfassung Der Nachweis oder Ausschluss ossarer Verletzungen am Ellbogengelenk wird primar mit der Projektionsradiographie in 2 Ebenen gefuhrt. Diese Basisdiagnostik wird durch Aufnahmen in 45°-Schragprojektion erganzt. Im Rahmen einer erweiterten Basisdiagnostik kommt die CT als uberlagerungsfreies Schnittbildverfahren zum Einsatz. Im Vordergrund stehen operationstaktische Fragen. Die MRT ist eine Methode der Spezialdiagnostik, die fruhzeitig (postprimar) bei okkulten Knochen- und Weichteilbefunden und zur Erstellung eines Ausgangsbefunds fur die spatere Begutachtung ihre Berechtigung hat.

Abstract: The detection of TeV -rays from the blazar H 1426+428 at an integral flux level of (4 2stat 1syst) 10 12 erg cm 2 s 1 above 1 TeV with the HEGRA imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope system is reported. H 1426+428 is located at a redshift of z = 0.129, which makes it the most distant source detected in TeV -rays so far. The TeV radiation is expected to be strongly absorbed by the diuse extragalactic background radiation (DEBRA). The observed energy spectrum of TeV photons is in good agreement with an intrinsic power law spectrum of the source/ E 1:9 corrected for DEBRA absorption. Statistical errors as well as uncertainties about the intrinsic source spectrum, however, do not permit strong statements about the density of the DEBRA infrared photon eld.

Abstract: We report on the results of two coordinated multiwavelength campaigns that focused on the blazar Markarian 421 during its 2006 and 2008 outbursts. These campaigns obtained UV and X-ray data using the XMM-Newton satellite, while the gamma-ray data were obtained utilizing three imaging atmospheric Cerenkov telescopes, the Whipple 10m telescope and VERITAS, both based in Arizona, as well as the MAGIC telescope, based on La Palma in the Canary Islands. The coordinated effort between the gamma-ray groups allowed for truly simultaneous data in UV/X-ray/gamma-ray wavelengths during a significant portion of the XMM-Newton observations. This simultaneous coverage allowed for a reliable search for correlations between UV, X-ray and gamma-ray variability over the course of the observations. Abstract: The accretion of matter onto a massive black hole is believed to feed the relativistic plasma jets found in many active galactic nuclei (AGN). Although some AGN accelerate particles to energies exceeding 10^12 electron Volts (eV) and are bright sources of very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emission, it is not yet known where the VHE emission originates. Here we report on radio and VHE observations of the radio galaxy M87, revealing a period of extremely strong VHE gamma-ray flares accompanied by a strong increase of the radio flux from its nucleus. Abstract: Prompt emission from the very fluent and nearby (z=0.34) gamma-ray burst GRB 130427A was detected by several orbiting telescopes and by ground-based, wide-field-of-view optical transient monitors. Apart from the intensity and proximity of this GRB, it is exceptional due to the extremely long-lived high-energy (100 MeV to 100 GeV) gamma-ray emission, which was detected by the Large Area Telescope on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope for ~70 ks after the initial burst. The persistent, hard-spectrum, high-energy emission suggests that the highest-energy gamma rays may have been produced via synchrotron self-Compton processes though there is also evidence that the high-energy emission may instead be an extension of the synchrotron spectrum. VERITAS, a ground-based imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescope array, began follow-up observations of GRB 130427A ~71 ks (~20 hr) after the onset of the burst. The GRB was not detected with VERITAS; however, the high elevation of the observations, coupled with the low redshift of the GRB, make VERITAS a very sensitive probe of the emission from GRB 130427A for E > 100 GeV. The non-detection and consequent upper limit derived place constraints on the synchrotron self-Compton model of high-energy gamma-ray emission from this burst., 22 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

Abstract: Cadmium Zinc Telluride and Cadmium Telluride are the detector materials of choice for the detection of X-rays in the X-ray energy band E >= 5keV with excellent spatial and spectral resolution and without cryogenic cooling. Abstract: The Galactic center is an interesting region for high-energy (0.1-100 GeV) and very-high-energy (E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray observations. Potential sources of GeV/TeV gamma-ray emission have been suggested, e.g., the accretion of matter onto the supermassive black hole, cosmic rays from a nearby supernova remnant (e.g. SgrA East), particle acceleration in a plerion, or the annihilation of dark matter particles. The Galactic center has been detected by EGRET and by Fermi/LAT in the MeV/GeV energy band. At TeV energies, the Galactic center was detected with moderate significance by the CANGAROO and Whipple 10 m telescopes and with high significance by H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS. We present the results from three years of VERITAS observations conducted at large zenith angles resulting in a detection of the Galactic center on the level of 18 standard deviations at energies above ~2.5TeV. The energy spectrum is derived and is found to be compatible with hadronic, leptonic and hybrid emission models discussed in the literature. Abstract: X-ray polarimetry promises to give qualitatively new information about high-energy astrophysical sources, such as binary black hole systems, micro-quasars, active galactic nuclei, and gamma-ray bursts. We designed, built and tested a hard X-ray polarimeter, X-Calibur, to be used in the focal plane of the balloon-borne InFOCuS grazing incidence hard X-ray telescope. X-Calibur combines a low-Z Compton scatterer with a CZT detector assembly to measure the polarization of 20-60 keV X-rays making use of the fact that polarized photons Compton scatter preferentially perpendicular to the electric field orientation. The X-Calibur detector assembly is completed, tested, and calibrated; a first flight is scheduled from Ft. Sumner, NM, in fall 2014. In principal, a similar space-borne experiment could be operated in the 5–100 keV regime. X-Calibur achieves a high detection efficiency of order unity.

Abstract: The astrophysical journal 782(1), 13(2014). doi:10.1088/0004-637X/782/1/13, The high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae object 1ES 0229+200 is a relatively distant (z = 0.1396), hard-spectrum (Γ ~ 2.5), very-high-energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) emitting γ-ray blazar. VHE measurements of this active galactic nucleus have been used to place constraints on the intensity of the extragalactic background light and the intergalactic magnetic field (IGMF). A multi-wavelength study of this object centered around VHE observations by Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) is presented. This study obtained, over a period of three years, an 11.7 standard deviation detection and an average integral flux F(E > 300 GeV) = (23.3 ± 2.8stat ± 5.8sys) × 10–9 photons m–2 s–1, or 1.7% of the Crab Nebula's flux (assuming the Crab Nebula spectrum measured by H.E.S.S). Supporting observations from Swift and RXTE are analyzed. The Swift observations are combined with previously published Fermi observations and the VHE measurements to produce an overall spectral energy distribution which is then modeled assuming one-zone synchrotron-self-Compton emission. The χ2 probability of the TeV flux being constant is 1.6%. This, when considered in combination with measured variability in the X-ray band, and the demonstrated variability of many TeV blazars, suggests that the use of blazars such as 1ES 0229+200 for IGMF studies may not be straightforward and challenges models that attribute hard TeV spectra to secondary γ-ray production along the line of sight., Published by Univ.11032, Chicago, Ill. The RXTE and VERITAS observations were spread over a 13 day period and revealed clear evidence for flux variability, and a strong X-ray and gamma-ray flare on 2009 February 26 (MJD 54888). The campaign delivered a well-sampled broadband energy spectrum with simultaneous RXTE and VERITAS very high energy (VHE, > 100 GeV) observations, as well as contemporaneous optical and Fermi observations. The 1ES 1218+30.4 broadband energy spectrum-the first with simultaneous X-ray and VHE gamma-ray energy spectra-is of particular interest as the source is located at a high cosmological redshift for a VHE source (z = 0.182), leading to strong absorption of VHE gamma rays by photons from the optical/infrared extragalactic background light (EBL) via gamma VHE +gamma EBL -> e(+) e(-)pair-creation processes. We model the data with a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission model and with the extragalactic absorption predicted by several recent EBL models. We find that the observations are consistent with the SSC scenario and all the EBL models considered in this work. We discuss observational and theoretical avenues to improve on the EBL constraints.

Abstract: X-ray polarimetry promises to deliver unique information about the geometry of the inner accretion flow of astrophysical black holes and the nature of matter and electromagnetism in and around neutron stars. In this paper, we discuss the possibility to use Stokes parameters - a commonly used tool in radio, infrared, and optical polarimetry - to analyze the data from X-ray polarimeters such as scattering polarimeters and photoelectric effect polarimeters, which measure the linear polarization of the detected X-rays. Based on the azimuthal scattering angle (in the case of a scattering polarimeter) or the azimuthal component of the angle of the electron ejection (in the case of a photoelectric effect polarimeter), the Stokes parameters can be calculated for each event recorded in the detector. Owing to the additive nature of Stokes parameters, the analysis reduces to adding the Stokes parameters of the individual events and subtracting the Stokes parameters characterizing the background (if present). The main strength of this kind of analysis is that the errors on the Stokes parameters can be computed easily and are well behaved - in stark contrast of the errors on the polarization fraction and polarization direction. We demonstrate the power of the Stokes analysis by deriving several useful formulae, e.g. the expected error on the polarization fraction and polarization direction for a detection of $N_S$ signal and $N_{BG}$ background events, the optimal observation times of the signal and background regions in the presence of non-negligible background contamination of the signal, and the minimum detectable polarization (MDP) that can be achieved when following this prescription., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Astropart. Abstract: We present very high energy (VHE) imaging of MGRO J2019+37 obtained with the VERITAS observatory. The bright extended ($\sim2^{\circ}$) unidentified Milagro source is located towards the rich star formation region Cygnus-X. MGRO J2019+37 is resolved into two VERITAS sources. The faint point-like source VER J2016+371 overlaps CTB 87, a filled-center remnant (SNR) with no evidence of a supernova remnant shell at the present time. Its spectrum is well fit in the $0.65 - 10$ TeV energy range by a power-law model with photon index $2.3\pm0.4$. VER J2019+368 is a bright extended ($\sim1^{\circ}$) source, that likely accounts for the bulk of the Milagro emission and is notably coincident with PSR J2021+3651 and the star formation region Sh 2-104. Its spectrum in the range $1-30$ TeV is well fit with a power-law model of photon index $1.75\pm0.3$, among the hardest values measured in the VHE band, comparable to that observed near Vela-X. Abstract: We report on deep observations of the extended TeV gamma-ray source MGRO J1908+06 made with the VERITAS very high energy (VHE) gamma-ray observatory. Previously, the TeV emission has been attributed to the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) of the Fermi-LAT pulsar PSR J1907+0602. We detect MGRO J1908+06 at a significance level of 14 standard deviations (14 sigma) and measure a photon index of 2.20 +/- 0.10_stat +/- 0.20_sys. The TeV emission is extended, covering the region near PSR J1907+0602 and also extending towards SNR G40.5--0.5. When fitted with a 2-dimensional Gaussian, the intrinsic extension has a standard deviation of sigma_src = 0.44 +/- 0.02 degrees. In contrast to other TeV PWNe of similar age in which the TeV spectrum softens with distance from the pulsar, the TeV spectrum measured near the pulsar location is consistent with that measured at a position near the rim of G40.5--0.5, 0.33 degrees away., To appear in ApJ, 8 pages

Abstract: The high-frequency-peaked BL Lacertae object 1ES 0229+200 is a relatively distant (z = 0.1396), hard-spectrum (Gamma ~ 2.5), very-high-energy-emitting (E > 100 GeV) gamma-ray blazar. Very-high-energy measurements of this active galactic nucleus have been used to place constraints on the intensity of the extragalactic background light and the intergalactic magnetic field. A multi-wavelength study of this object centered around very-high-energy observations by VERITAS is presented. This study obtained, over a period of three years, an 11.7 standard deviation detection and an average integral flux F(E>300 GeV) = (23.3 +- 2.8_stat +- 5.8_sys) x 10^-9 photons m^-2 s^-1, or 1.7% of the Crab Nebula's flux (assuming the Crab Nebula spectrum measured by H.E.S.S). Supporting observations from Swift and RXTE are analyzed. The Swift observations are combined with previously published Fermi observations and the very-high-energy measurements to produce an overall spectral energy distribution which is then modeled assuming one-zone synchrotron-self-Compton emission. The chi^2 probability of the TeV flux being constant is 1.6%. This, when considered in combination with measured variability in the X-ray band, and the demonstrated variability of many TeV blazars, suggests that the use of blazars such as 1ES 0229+200 for intergalactic magnetic field studies may not be straightforward and challenges models that attribute hard TeV spectra to secondary gamma-ray production along the line of sight., Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract: The proof or exclusion of bone injuries at the elbow joint is given primarily with the projection radiography in 2 levels. This base diagnostics is completed by X-ray in 45° diagonal projection. In the context of an extended base diagnostics the CT is applied as sectional view procedure. Operation-tactical questions are the center of attention. MRI is a method of choice for special diagnostics, for instance in the case of occult bone injury, in soft tissue findings and for the creation of output findings for the later investigation.

Abstract: Die Verfahren der modernen bildgebenden Diagnostik sind vielfaltig. Zur Verfugung stehen unterschiedliche technische Grundprinzipien. Hieraus ergeben sich Indikationen und Leistungsspektren. Der Nachweis oder Ausschluss ossarer Verletzungen wird primar mit der Projektionsradiographie in 2 Ebenen gefuhrt. Diese Basisdiagnostik wird erganzt durch gehaltene Aufnahmen. Im Rahmen einer erweiterten Basisdiagnostik kommt die CT als uberlagerungsfreies Schnittbildverfahren zum Einsatz. Im Vordergrund stehen operationstaktische Fragen. Die Kernspintomographie ist eine Methode der Spezialdiagnostik, die fruhzeitig (postprimar) bei okkulten Knochen- und Weichteilbefunden und zur Erstellung eines Ausgangsbefundes fur die spatere Begutachtung ihre Berechtigung hat. Sekundar kann die MR bei Verlaufskontrollen, insbesondere bei intra- und parossaren Komplikationen, therapierelevante Zusatzinformationen liefern. Im Rahmen der Begutachtung kommt der MR ein wesentliches Leistungsspektrum zu. Der oft schwierige Fragenkomplex nach Befundobjektivierung und -ifferenzierung einerseits und der Kausalitat andererseits ist hochsensitiv und spezifisch zu beantworten.

Abstract: Das Schultergelenk ist infolge seiner anatomischen Ausbildung als Kugelgelenk das beweglichste Gelenk des menschlichen Korpers. Die sich hieraus ergebenden Bewegungsmoglichkeiten bedingen einerseits bereits fruhzeitig degenerative Schadigungen infolge beruflicher oder sportlicher Belastungen und andererseits eine besondere ¶Angriffsflache fur Verletzungen. Die Basisdiagnostik sowohl des unklaren Schulterschmerzes als auch verletzungsbedingter Schadigungen am Schultergelenk ist die Rontgendiagnostik in 2 Ebenen. Dislozierende ossare Verletzungen bzw. Luxationen sind hiermit treffsicher nachzuweisen bzw. in der Verlaufskontrolle zu beurteilen. Intraartikulare Befunde und Weichteilveranderungen (degenerativ, traumatisch) sind hingegen mit den Schnittbildverfahren der Sonographie, Computertomographie und Kernspintomographie mit unterschiedlicher Treffsicherheit und Spezifitat nachzuweisen. Die klassische Gelenkarthrographie hingegen tritt gegenuber diesen Verfahren deutlich in ihrer Bedeutung zuruck. Die Sonographie ist ein ubiquitar verfugbares, jedoch wenig standardisiertes Verfahren. Die Reproduzierbarkeit der Befunde ist fraglich. Die Computertomographie stellt die Methode der Wahl bei der Diagnostik von okkulten ossaren bzw. Gelenkverletzungen dar. Die Methode ist breit verfugbar und mit vertretbarem Aufwand durchzufuhren. In den letzten 10 Jahren hat die Kernspintomographie infolge der technischen Weiterentwicklung (Spulen, Sequenzen, Rekonstruktionsmoglichkeiten usw.) an Sensitivitat und Spezifitat gewonnen. In der Summe aller klinischen Fragestellungen stellt sie neben der Basisdiagnostik derzeit die effektivste Untersuchungsmethode des Schultergelenks dar.

Abstract: PURPOSE Development of an imaging method for detection of seminal vesicle invasion in patients with histologically proven carcinoma of the prostate. MATERIALS AND METHODS In 24 patients with histologically proven carcinoma of the prostate we preoperatively performed an antegrade vaso-vesiculography with non-ionic, iodine-containing contrast agent followed by a spiral CT of the seminal vesicles. RESULTS In 21 patients we achieved both a bilateral and a bulging enhancement of the seminal vesicle lumen. The method is introduced and described in detail. CONCLUSIONS Intraductal application of contrast agent just before spiral CT results in unfold and bulging enhanced seminal vesicles. From the differentiation of the lumen, the wall, and the surrounding fat of the seminal vesicles as well as the enhanced ejaculatory ducts we expect information on tumorous infiltration in cases of histologically proven carcinomas of the prostate.

Abstract: We report on multifrequency observations performed during 2012 December-2013 August of the first narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy detected in gamma-rays, PMN J0948+0022 (z = 0.5846). A y -ray flare was observed by the Large Area Telescope on board Fermi during 2012 December-2013 January, reaching a daily peak flux in the 0.1-100 GeV energy range of (155 31) x 10 8 ph cm(-2) S-1 on 2013 January 1, corresponding to an apparent isotropic luminosity of similar to 1.5 x 1048 erg s(-1). The y -ray flaring period triggered Swift and Very Energetic Radiation Imaging Telescope Array System (VERITAS) observations in addition to radio and optical monitoring by Owens Valley Radio Observatory, Monitoring Of Jets in Active galactic nuclei with VLBA Experiments, and Catalina Real-time Transient Survey. A strong flare was observed in optical, UV, and X-rays on 2012 December 30, quasi-simultaneously to the y -ray flare, reaching a record flux for this source from optical to y gamma-rays. VERITAS observations at very high energy (E > 100 GeV) during 2013 January 6-17 resulted in an upper limit of F>0.2 Trev < 4.0 x 10(-12) ph cm(-2) s(-1). We compared the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the flaring state in 2013 January with that of an intermediate state observed in 2011. The two SEDs, modelled as synchrotron emission and an external Compton scattering of seed photons from a dust torus, can be modelled by changing both the electron distribution parameters and the magnetic field., QC 20150407

VERITAS observations at very high energy (E > 100 GeV) during 2013 January 6–17 resulted in an upper limit of F>0.2 TeV < 4.0 × 10−12 ph cm−2 s−1. We compared the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the flaring state in 2013 January with that of an intermediate state observed in 2011. The two SEDs, modelled as synchrotron emission and an external Compton scattering of seed photons from a dust torus, can be modelled by changing both the electron distribution parameters and the magnetic field.

Abstract: PURPOSE This experimental study investigates the suitability of spiral CT angiography for detection of stenoses. MATERIAL AND METHODS Three vessel phantoms of 4, 7, and 10 mm diameter were scanned with spiral CT several times using different scanning parameters each time. Axial scans were viewed in different ways. Stenoses were adjusted axial, oblique, and parallel to the scan plane, and in between. 7 radiologists had to make a total of 630 decisions about the detectability of stenoses. RESULTS Adequate scan and reconstructional parameters improve detection of stenoses significantly. 100% recognition can be reached with 5 mm layer thickness and table feed and 2 mm reconstructional interval provided axial scans are viewed in cine mode on a monitor. Vessels running parallel to the layer plane show better results than vessels axial to the plane, which in turn show better results than those running oblique. Vessels of 4 to 10 mm diameter are almost equally suitable. CONCLUSIONS Viewing axial scans, the detectability is rather influenced by different locations of stenoses than by varying vessel diameters.

Abstract: X-ray polarimetry promises unique information about astrophysical objects such as binary black hole systems, neutron stars, microquasars, active galactic nuclei, and gamma-ray bursts. We designed and built X-Calibur, a hard x-ray polarimeter to be flown in the focal plane of the InFOCS grazing incidence mirror in the fall of 2014 from Fort Sumner (NM)1. During the one-day flight X-Calibur will measure spectrum and polarization of x-rays in the 20–80keV range from up to five selected sources. X-Calibur exploits the fact that polarized photons scatter preferentially in a direction orthogonal to the orientation of their electric field vector. By combining a low-Z scatterer with high-Z Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) detectors to photo-absorb the scattered x-rays, X-Calibur achieves a high detection efficiency of almost unity and a large modulation factor close to the theoretical limit given by the physics of Compton scattering. We have calibrated and tested X-Calibur extensively in the laboratory at Washington University and at the Cornell High-Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS). Measurements using the highly polarized synchrotron beam at CHESS confirm the polarization sensitivity of the instrument. In this paper we report on the design of X-Calibur and results of laboratory calibration measurements characterizing the performance of the instrument.
