FOS: Physical sciences ,Nuclear Experiment (nucl-ex) - Abstract
We observed a distinct peak in the $p$ invariant mass spectrum of $^{3}{\rm He}(K^-, \, p)n$, well below the mass threshold of $m_K + 2 m_p$. By selecting a relatively large momentum-transfer region $q = 350 \sim 650$ MeV/$c$, one can clearly separate the peak from the quasi-free process, $\overline{K}N \rightarrow \overline{K}N$ followed by the non-resonant absorption by the two spectator-nucleons $\overline{K}NN \rightarrow N $. We found that the simplest fit to the observed peak gives us a Breit-Wigner pole position at $B_{\rm {\it Kpp}} = 47 \pm 3 \, (stat.) \,^{+3}_{-6} \,(sys.)$ MeV having a width $_{\rm {\it Kpp}} = 115 \pm 7 \, (stat.) \,^{+10}_{-9} \,(sys.)$ MeV, and the $S$-wave Gaussian reaction form-factor parameter $Q_{\rm {\it Kpp}} = 381 \pm 14 \, (stat.)\,^{+57}_{-0} \,(sys.)$ MeV/$c$, as a new form of the nuclear bound system with strangeness -- "$K^-pp$"., 17 pages, 4 figures

The J-PARC E15 experiment will be performed to search for the simplest kaonic nuclear bound state, K− pp, by the in-flight 3He(K−,n) reaction. The exclusive measurement can be performed by a simultaneous measurement of the missing mass using the primary neutron and the invariant mass via the expected decay, K− pp → Λp → pπ− p. In this report, an overview of the experiment and the preparation status are presented.

The SIDDHARTA experiment aims at a precise measurement of K -series kaonic hydrogen x-rays and the first-ever measurement of the kaonic deuterium x-rays to determine the strong-interaction energy-level shift and width of the lowest lying atomic states. These measurements offer a unique possibility to precisely determine the isospin-dependent $ar{K}$-nucleon scattering lengths.

- Abstract
Acute hematoma remains one of the most frequently encountered complications after face-lift surgery. Several risk factors inherent to the patient and omission of certain intraoperative regimens are considered to cause hematoma. Significant risk factors include high blood pressure and male gender. Possible intraoperative regimens for the prevention of hematoma include tumescence infiltration without adrenaline, clotting of raw surfaces with fibrin glue, usage of drains, and application of compression bandages. However, little attention has been paid to postoperative measures. To examine whether different regimens in the postoperative phase can influence the incidence of hematoma, all face-lift patients who underwent surgery by a single surgeon in two different clinics (n=376) with two different postoperative regimens were evaluated over the course of 3years. In group 1 (n=308), all postoperative medication was administered on request including medication for pain control, blood pressure stabilization, and prevention of nausea and vomiting as well as postoperative restlessness and agitation. In group 2 (n=68), this medication was administered prophylactically at the end of the operation before extubation. The hematoma rate was 7% in group 1 and 0% in group 2. This study showed that the prophylactic use of medications (e.g., analgesics, antihypertonics, antiemetics, and sedatives) during the postoperative phase is superior to making drugs available to patients on request and can decrease the occurrence of acute hematoma in face-lift patients

- Abstract
A retrospective, quantitative, long-term evaluation of patients with a free flap transfer to the lower extremity was carried out with respect to functional, socioeconomic, and esthetic outcome. The study included 57 patients who were examined by questionnaire filled out by both an examiner and the patients themselves. Indications for the free flaps were acute trauma or osteomyelitis and unstable scars arising from a previous trauma to the lower leg. The flap success rate was 94.7%. The period between the operation and evaluation was at least 3years. A local, flap-specific functional impairment was found in 17 patients (30%) and a general impairment of the lower extremity in 56% of the subjects. With respect to the socioeconomic outcome more than two-thirds of the patients returned to their previous occupation with no restrictions; approximately 20% of subjects had to switch to a less strenuous job. Although from the viewpoint of the examiner the esthetic appearance was satisfactory in 44 free flaps (77%), the majority of the patients were conscious of pigmental, textural, or contour changes which produced a subjective esthetic compromise in 56% of cases. In conclusion, despite a considerably high rate of local functional impairment the majority of patients (89%) were satisfied and judged the application of a free flap as having been beneficial in preventing a loss in socioeconomic status. The high rate of esthetic problems demonstrates the importance of including esthetic considerations in designing the free flap, in particular with regard to (a) meticulously tailoring the flap, (b) aiming at a homogeneous skin surface, and (c) thoroughly shaping the affected lower extremity

- Abstract
Breast reconstruction, especially immediate reconstruction after mastectomy has increased over the last decades, at present being regularly offered in many centres worldwide. Despite obvious benefits and the evident oncological safety of primary breast reconstruction, the majority of women still receive a delayed procedure or even no reconstructive surgery. The objective of the present study was to determine the preference of women for breast reconstruction—immediate or delayed—and in the case of rejection of treatment to find out the reasons for this reluctance. In a prospective study a sample of 200 women—divided into two groups—were evaluated by an oral interview on the subject. The two-formed groups of participants consisted of randomly chosen women (n=100) and non-surgical nurses (n=100). The questionnaire surveyed personal data including marital status and educational level, as well as information about the preferred timing, the method of and the reasons for or against breast reconstruction. The evaluation of all data showed that 66% of the participants voted for additional surgery after mastectomy. Young age and high education level were significantly correlated (age r=0.56, P<0.01; education r=0.25, P<0.01) to the wish for reconstruction. The mean age of all participants was 39years (range 20-69), with a significant difference between the two groups (P<0.01), the group of nurses being younger (mean age 35, range 20-62) and the other women being older (mean age 43, range 20-69). Concerning the timing of reconstruction, 21% of women elected to have an immediate and 27% a delayed operation. Yet, 52% could not come to a decision as to whether they should prefer a primary or secondary procedure. For the surgical procedure—autologous versus non-autologous tissue—about 23% of the participants could not decide spontaneously, while 40% preferred autologous tissue, 14% implants and 23% would choose a combination of both. The main reason in favour of reconstruction was

- Abstract
In Voltaire's British visitors, Sir Gavin de Beer and André-Michel Rousseau have collected accounts of one hundred and fifty visits by British travellers to Voltaire in Switzerland, where he spent the last years of his life on the shores of Lake Geneva. One hundred and twenty-three of these visitors have been identified, and they range from men as young as fifteen on a Grand Tour to Thomas Pitt, brother of William, and Edward Gibbon. As the Seven Years' War made Switzerland, rather than France, part of the normal route for Englishmen making their way to Italy, Geneva became a destination for more and more British travellers, and many of these, whether they held letters of recommendation from people known to Voltaire, or had merely read his work, wanted to see the famous Frenchman, their motives ranging, as Rousseau puts it in his introduction, from 'very superficial curiosity to downright admiration'. The accounts run from a bare mention of a visit, consisting of a few lines, to fascinating accounts of lively conversations with Voltaire about politics, religion and English literature and descriptions of his home at Ferney with its chapel and little playhouse. John Morgan in 1764, visiting with a Mr Samuel Powel, writes of his surprise when Voltaire saw a little dog in the room, turned to Mr Powel and 'as I thought, a little abruptly ask'd him, what think you of that little dog; has he any Soul or not, & what do the People in England now think of the Soul.' James Boswell, who stayed for three days in 1764, calls Voltaire's home an 'enchanted castle' and records conversation ranging from impassioned Biblical debate to Voltaire's comment on Scotland's painters when Boswell told him of the failure of an Academy of painting there: 'No; to paint well it is necessary to have warm feet. It's hard to paint when your feet are cold.' Together, these one hundred and fifty vignettes offer a fascinating and unusual glimpse into Voltaire's life from 1754 to 1778 through immediate and personal accounts of his conversation, hospitality and domestic life.

In this work the boundary element method (BEM) is applied to steady incom- pressible viscous flow of Newtonian fluids. The boundary integral equation is derived from the continuity and momentum equation and the primary variables involved are velocity and traction. Due to the non-linearity of the governing differencial equation a volume integral arise in the formulation of the final equation system. Thus, iterative techniques, either a full or modified Newton-Raphson algorithm, are applied in the solution procedure. The numerical discretisation is done in two different ways, firstly with the use of clas- sical isoparametric continuous elements of linear and quadratic order. Using this type of elements geometry- and mesh-generation is a significant portion of the overall compu- tation effort. In contrast to this, in a second implementation, the discretisation is done with the isogeometric analysis (IGA). With the IGA geometry data can be taken directly from Computer Aided Design (CAD) programs, potentially eliminating the need for mesh generation. The arising surface and volume integrals of the BEM are evaluated with both techniques, the isoparametric application and with the IGA. Computational results are shown for the two different numerical implementations based on a 2D benchmark example. The accuracy of the results of both methods are compared as well as the computational effort, such as numbers of degrees of freedom and internal point calculations.

The structure of the Λ(1405) hyperon is an important and long-standing issue related to the K̄-nucleus interaction. The J-PARC E31 experiment has been performed to investigate the Λ(1405) spectrum shape. Because it is hard to form the Λ(1405) directly by a K̄N scattering in free space, E31 uses the d(K
− , n) reaction with an incident kaon momentum of 1 GeV/c. We will identify three final states - Σ− π+ , Σ+ π− , Σ0 π0 -so that the isospin structure of hyperon resonance states produced can be decomposed. The first physics run of the E31 experiment was performed in 2016. To enhance the statistics of the data set, we have performed the second physics run in the beginning of 2018. During the second run of E31, around 3.9×1010 kaons impacted on the deuteron target. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Contains fulltext : 169726.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access), BACKGROUND: ECG and echocardiography are noninvasive screening tools to detect subclinical cardiotoxicity in childhood cancer survivors (CCSs). Our aims were as follows: (1) assess the prevalence of abnormal ECG patterns, (2) determine the agreement between abnormal ECG patterns and echocardiographic abnormalities; and (3) determine whether ECG screening for subclinical cardiotoxicity in CCSs is justified. PROCEDURE: We retrospectively studied ECG and echocardiography in asymptomatic CCSs more than 5 years after anthracycline treatment. Exclusion criteria were abnormal ECG and/or echocardiogram at the start of therapy, incomplete follow-up data, clinical heart failure, cardiac medication, and congenital heart disease. ECG abnormalities were classified using the Minnesota Code. Level of agreement between ECG and echocardiography was calculated with Cohen kappa. RESULTS: We included 340 survivors with a mean follow-up of 14.5 years (range 5-32). ECG was abnormal in 73 survivors (21.5%), with ventricular conduction disorders, sinus bradycardia, and high-amplitude R waves being most common. Prolonged QTc (>0.45 msec) was found in two survivors, both with a cumulative anthracycline dose of 300 mg/m2 or higher. Echocardiography showed abnormalities in 44 survivors (12.9%), mostly mild valvular abnormalities. The level of agreement between ECG and echocardiography was low (kappa 0.09). Male survivors more often had an abnormal ECG (corrected odds ratio: 3.00, 95% confidence interval: 1.68-5.37). CONCLUSIONS: Abnormal ECG patterns were present in 21% of asymptomatic long-term CCSs. Lack of agreement between abnormal ECG patterns and echocardiographic abnormalities may suggest that ECG is valuable in long-term follow-up of CCSs. However, it is not clear whether these abnormal ECG patterns will be clinically relevant.

To search for an S= -1 di-baryonic state which decays to $p$, the $ {\rm{}^3He}(K^-,p)n_{missing}$ reaction was studied at 1.0 GeV/$c$. Unobserved neutrons were kinematically identified from the missing mass $M_X$ of the $ {\rm{}^3He}(K^-,p)X$ reaction in order to have a large acceptance for the $pn$ final state. The observed $p n$ events, distributed widely over the kinematically allowed region of the Dalitz plot, establish that the major component comes from a three nucleon absorption process. A concentration of events at a specific neutron kinetic energy was observed in a region of low momentum transfer to the $p$. To account for the observed peak structure, the simplest S-wave pole was assumed to exist in the reaction channel, having Breit-Wigner form in energy and with a Gaussian form-factor. A minimum $^2$ method was applied to deduce its mass $M_X\ =$ 2355 $ ^{+ 6}_{ - 8}$ (stat.) $ \pm 12$ (syst.) MeV/c$^2$, and decay-width $_X\ = $ 110 $ ^{+ 19}_{ - 17}$ (stat.) $ \pm 27$ (syst.) MeV/c$^2$, respectively. The form factor parameter $Q_X \sim$ 400 MeV/$c$ implies that the range of interaction is about 0.5, 12pages, 8 figures

Totally bounded set, bornology, star-development - Abstract
We show that a metric space hX; di is separable if and only if the bornology of its d-bounded subsets agrees with the bornology of ff-totally bounded subsets with respect to some equivalent remetrization ff. We also show that the bornology of d-totally bounded subsets agrees with the bornol-ogy of ff-bounded subsets with respect to some equivalent remetrization if and only if the former bornology has a countable coffnal subfamily. Finally, we characterize those bornologies on a metrizable space that are bornologies of totally bounded sets as determined by some metric compatible with the topology. © 2011 University of Houston.

Let S be an ideal of subsets of a metric space (X, d). A net of subsets (Aλ) of X is called S-convergent to a subset A of X if for each S ∈ S and each ε > 0, we have eventually A ∩ S ⊆ A λε and Aλ ∩ S ⊆. A ε. We identify necessary and sufficient conditions for this convergence to be admissible and topological on the power set of X. We show that S-convergence is compatible with a pseudometrizable topology if and only if S has a countable base and each member of S has an ε-enlargement that is again in S. Further, in the case that the ideal is a bornology, we show that S-convergence when pseudometrizable is Attouch-Wets convergence with respect to an equivalent metric.
