220. Student Preferences for Social Studies Content and Methodology.

Abstract

This study investigated (1) whether girls express greater or lesser interest in certain social studies methodology and content than do boys, and (2) whether, in these areas, differences exist between junior and senior high school students. Conducted in Georgia in 1976, the study involved 391 students representing rural and suburban areas. On an 18-item rating scale, the students indicated their level of agreement with statements explaining why a person might enjoy social studies classes. Ten statements dealt with methodology and eight dealt with curriculum content. These included use of films or oral reports and emphasis on current events or money management. Two tables of data document the results. Girls on both levels expressed interest in the culturally-oriented areas of sociology and cultural geography. This may indicate that the culturally-oriented areas of social studies have less male bias than those dealing with military and political history or physical geography. Boys, especially on the junior high level, expressed greater liking for military and political history than did girls, although the difference diminishes as students mature. In general, junior high students seemed more favorable than senior high students toward social studies. Abstract

No brief dietary screeners are available that capture dietary consumption patterns of Asian Americans. The purpose of this article is to describe the cultural adaptation of the validated Dietary Screener Questionnaire (DSQ) for use by clinicians, researchers, and community-based partners seeking to understand and intervene on dietary behaviors among English-speaking Asian Americans, for the six largest Asian subgroups (Chinese, Filipino, Asian Indian, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese) in the United States. This was mainly accomplished by adding culturally specific examples of foods to the questionnaire items via searching online databases and soliciting input from members of our community partner network representing each of the six largest Asian subgroups. Over half of the 26 items on the DSQ were modified to include more culturally specific foods. Developing high-quality tools that reflect the diversity of the U.S. population are critical to implement nutrition interventions that do not inadvertently widen health disparities. 247. Diagnosis and treatment of epidural empyema in a pygmy goat

Abstract

A mixed-breed pygmy goat was presented for nonambulatory tetraparesis. Neurological examination was consistent with a C6 to T2 myelopathy. Initially, the goat was treated medically. Forty-three days later, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an extradural mass compressing the cervical spinal cord. Magnetic resonance attributes of the mass were consistent with a slow-growing, fluid-poor lesion. The spinal cord was surgically decompressed. Epidural empyema secondary to Fusobacterium necrophorum was identified. Postoperative care consisted of anti-inflammatory medication, antimicrobials, and physical therapy. Ability to walk occurred by day 14 after surgery. Despite prolonged recumbency before surgery, the goat was clinically normal, and antimicrobials were discontinued on day 60 after surgery. Key clinical message: Epidural empyema can cause a compressive myelopathy which may result in varying degrees of paresis/paralysis. Clinical resolution and return of normal function occurred following the use of MRI to plan surgical decompression combined with extended use of antimicrobials.
