Abstract

The differential cross-section for the inclusive production of ψ(2S) mesons in pp collisions at [Formula: see text] has been measured with the LHCb detector. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 36 pb-1. The ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed in the decay channels ψ(2S)→μ+μ- and ψ(2S)→J/ψπ+π-, with the J/ψ meson decaying into two muons. Abstract

The production of ϒ(1S), ϒ(2S) and ϒ(3S) mesons in proton-proton collisions at the centre-of-mass energy of [Formula: see text] is studied with the LHCb detector. The analysis is based on a data sample of 25 pb-1 collected at the Large Hadron Collider. The ϒ mesons are reconstructed in the decay mode ϒ→μ+μ- and the signal yields are extracted from a fit to the μ+μ- invariant mass distributions. Abstract

The relative rates of B-meson decays into J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons are measured for the three decay modes in pp collisions recorded with the LHCb detector. The ratios of branching fractions ([Formula: see text]) are measured to be [Formula: see text] where the third uncertainty is from the ratio of the ψ(2S) and J/ψ branching fractions to μ+μ-.

Abstract

Using 34.7 pb−1of data collected with the LHCb detector, the inclusive production of the X(3872) meson in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV is observed for the first time. Candidates are selected in the X(3872)→J/ψπ+π−decay mode, and used to measure σ(pp→X(3872)+anything)B(X(3872)→J/ψπ+π−) = 5.4 ± 1.3 (stat) ± 0.8 (syst) nb, where σ(pp →X(3872) + anything) is the inclusive production cross section of X(3872) mesons with rapidity in the range 2.5–4.5 and transverse momentum in the range 5–20 GeV/c. In addition the masses of both the X(3872) and ψ(2S) mesons, reconstructed in the J/ψπ+π−final state, are measured to be mX(3872) = 3871.95 ± 0.48 (stat) ± 0.12 (syst) MeV/c2and mψ(2S) = 3686.12± 0.06 (stat) ± 0.10 (syst) MeV/c2.

211. Summing Sudakov logarithms in B -> X_s + gamma in effective field theory

Abstract

We construct an effective field theory valid for processes in which highly energetic light-like particles interact with collinear and soft degrees of freedom, using the decay B -> X_s + gamma near the endpoint of the photon spectrum, x = 2 E_gamma / m_b -> 1, as an example. Below the scale mu=m_b both soft and collinear degrees of freedom are included in the effective theory, while below the scale mu=m_b sqrt{x-y}, where 1-y is the lightcone momentum fraction of the b quark in the B meson, we match onto a theory of bilocal operators. We show that at one loop large logarithms cancel in the matching conditions, and that we recover the well known renormalization group equations that sum leading Sudakov logarithms., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures

Using an interface displacement model we calculate the shapes of nanometer-size liquid droplets on homogeneous cylindrical surfaces. We determine effective contact angles and line tensions, the latter defined as excess free energies per unit length associated with the two contact lines at the ends of the droplet. Abstract

Using a density functional based interface displacement model we determine the effective interaction potential between two spherical particles which are immersed in a homogeneous fluid such as the vapor phase of a one-component substance or the A-rich liquid phase of a binary liquid mixture composed of A and B particles. If this solvent is thermodynamically close to a first-order fluid-fluid phase transition, the spheres are covered with wetting films of the incipient bulk phase, i.e., the liquid phase or the B-rich liquid, respectively. Below a critical distance between the spheres their wetting films snap to a bridgelike configuration. We determine phase diagrams for this morphological transition and analyze its repercussions on the effective interaction potential. Our results are accessible to force microscopy and may be relevant to flocculation in colloidal suspensions., Comment: 30 pages, RevTeX, 8 Figures

Abstract

The production of J/ψ mesons in proton-proton collisions at √S = 7 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The differential cross-section for prompt J/ψ production is measured as a function of the J/ψ transverse momentum pT and rapidity y in the fiducial region pT ∈ [0; 14] GeV/c and y ∈ [2.0; 4.5]. The differential cross-section and fraction of J/ψ from b-hadron decays are also measured in the same pT and y ranges. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.2 pb&-1. The measured cross-sections integrated over the fiducial region are 10.52 ± 0.04 ± 1.40+1.64 &-2.20 μb for prompt J/ψ production and 1.14 ± 0.01 ± 0.16 μb for J/ψ from b-hadron decays, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The prompt J/ψ production cross-section is obtained assuming no J/ψ polarisation and the third error indicates the acceptance uncertainty due to this assumption.

Abstract

The production of J/ψ mesons in proton-proton collisions at √S = 7 TeV is studied with the LHCb detector at the LHC. The differential cross-section for prompt J/ψ production is measured as a function of the J/ψ transverse momentum pT and rapidity y in the fiducial region pT ∈ [0; 14] GeV/c and y ∈ [2.0; 4.5]. The differential cross-section and fraction of J/ψ from b-hadron decays are also measured in the same pT and y ranges. The analysis is based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.2 pb&-1. The measured cross-sections integrated over the fiducial region are 10.52 ± 0.04 ± 1.40+1.64 &-2.20 μb for prompt J/ψ production and 1.14 ± 0.01 ± 0.16 μb for J/ψ from b-hadron decays, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The prompt J/ψ production cross-section is obtained assuming no J/ψ polarisation and the third error indicates the acceptance uncertainty due to this assumption.

Abstract

Based on a microscopic density functional theory we calculate the internal structure of the three-phase contact line between liquid, vapor, and a confining wall as well as the morphology of liquid wetting films on a substrate exhibiting a chemical step. We present a refined numerical analysis of the nonlocal density functional which describes the interface morphologies and the corresponding line tensions. These results are compared with those predicted by a more simple phenomenological interface displacement model. Except for the case that the interface exhibits large curvatures, we find that the interface displacement model provides a quantitatively reliable description of the interfacial structures., Comment: 31 pages, RevTeX, 13 figures

Abstract

Zusammenfassung: Eine Meningoenzephalitis verursacht durch Acanthamoeba spp. ist eine seltene opportunistische Infektion, die sehr schwierig zu diagnostizieren und zu therapieren ist und fast immer letal endet. Wir berichten über neuropathologische Befunde bei einer 16-jährigen immunsuppressiv behandelten Patientin mit einem systemischen Lupus erythematodes (SLE), die an einer fulminant verlaufenden Acanthamoeba-Meningoenzephalitis verstarb. Neuropathologisch zeigten sich multiple supra- und infratentorielle hämorrhagisch-nekrotisierende Läsionen mit gemischtzelliger Enzephalitis und Vaskulitis, fibrinoiden Gefäßwandnekrosen und lokaler Leptomeningitis. Zum Teil lagen in diesen Nekroseherden massenhaft Acanthamöben vor, die mit Makrophagen verwechselt werden können, bei differenzialdiagnostischer Berücksichtigung aber durch zytologische Unterschiede und resultierende gezielte Zusatzuntersuchungen abzugrenzen sind. Unseres Wissens ist dies der erste publizierte Fall einer Acanthamoeba-Meningoenzephalitis bei einem SLE-Patienten in Deutschland.

Abstract

The unstable N=42 nucleus $^{72}$Zn has been studied using multiple safe Coulomb excitation in inverse kinematics. The experiment was performed at the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN making first use of the silicon detector array C-REX in combination with the γ-ray spectrometer Miniball. The high angular coverage of C-REX allowed to determine the reduced transition strengths for the decay of the yrast 01+, 21+ and 41+ as well as of the 02+ and 22+ states in $^{72}$Zn. The quadrupole moments of the 21+, 41+ and 22+ states were extracted. Using model independent quadrupole invariants, the ground state of $^{72}$Zn was found to have an average deformation in the γ degree of freedom close to maximum triaxiality. In comparison to experimental data in zinc isotopes with N<40, the collectivity of the 41+ state in neutron-rich $^{72}$Zn is significantly larger, indicating a collective yrast band based on the ground state of $^{72}$Zn. In contrast, a low experimental B(E2;02+→21+) strength was determined, indicating a different structure for the 02+ state. Shell-model calculations propose a 02+ state featuring a larger fraction of the (spherical) N=40 closed-shell configuration in its wave function than for the 01+ ground state.The results were also compared with beyond mean field calculations which corroborate the large deformation in the γ degree of freedom, while pointing to a more deformed 02+ state. These experimental and theoretical findings establish the importance of the γ degree of freedom in the ground state of $^{72}$Zn, located between the $^{68,70}$Ni nuclei that have spherical ground states, and $^{76}$Ge, which has a rigid triaxial shape.
