ANIMAL models in research , *TYPE 2 diabetes , *GLUCOSE , *DIABETES , *INSULIN resistance - Abstract
There stilla are many unknown facts about the pathogenic mechanisms of such a prevalente disease nowadays as i type-2 diabetes mellitus (DM2). The advances in diabetes prevention and management will greatly depend on the understanding of these mechanisms; therefore, it will be essential to keep on using animal models on which carrying out experiments that would be urethical in humans. DM2 represents a heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by an increase in insulin resistance at periphera tissues and a deterioration in insulin secretion by pancreatic β-cells, both abnormalities being highly interweaved. The mentioned heterogeneity of DM2 is also reflected by the high diversity of useful animal models for its study. The main DM2 models are reviewed, classifying them by their mechanism of action in spontaneous or induced. Also, two categories in each one of them are distinguiseed: analogous models, which try to imitate the human disease, and intrinsic models, with which we pretend to answer specific questions about the disease. The decision about which model to case for a particular experiment usually is multifactorial. Ideally, the experiments should be carried out in several different models, taking into account that none of them completely reflects the complexity of human DM2 and that precautions should be taken when trying to extrapolate the findings to the clinical practice. Background: The aim of this prospective study was to compare the safety and efficacy of a new cephamycin, cefminox 2 g/12 h, to those of the usual regimen combining metronidazole 500 mg/8 h and gentamicin 80 mg/8 h (M+G). Patients and Methods: 160 patients with clinically proven intra-abdominal infection were prospectively included in an open parallel randomized comparative multicenter trial. Antibiotics were started preoperatively and discontinued after clinical and laboratory evidence of resolution of the infection. Serum and peritoneal fluid levels and serum bactericidal activities were also studied. Results: 150 patients were clinically evaluable. There was one failure in the cefminox group and three in the M+G group (not significant, RR: 1.07,95% CI: 1-1.15). No differences were found in the number of wound infections, length of stay or duration of antibiotic therapy. Adverse effects were reported in 11 cases, all of them mild to moderate. Escherichia coli and Bacteroides fragilis were the most frequently found microorganisms. Conclusion: Cefminox is as effective and as safe as M+G in the treatment of intra-abdominal infections. This experimental work has been carried out with the aim of studying the ultrastructural myocardial changes caused by prolonged anoxic cardiac arrest during cardiopulmonary bypass, and their prevention by means of two different techniques of coronary perfusion--systemic-pressure continuous and low-pressure intermittent perfusion. After 30 minutes of cardiac anoxia, the ultrastructural changes of the myocardial cell were reverted to normal by coronary perfusion; when anoxic cardiac arrest was prolonged up to 60 minutes there was severe myocardial damage, with marked mitochondrial changes and dehiscence of intercalated discs, which persisted in spite of restoring coronary flow. These morphological data were in accordance with the fact that no dog which underwent anoxic cardiac arrest for 60 minutes recovered. Both intermittent and continuous coronary perfusion were effective in preventing anoxic damage; cardiac muscle cells were better preserved by low-pressure intermittent perfusion than by systemic-pressure continuous perfusion, which caused intracellular and intramitochondrial oedema. International audience; The neutron capture cross sections of several unstable nuclides acting as branching points in the s process are crucial for stellar nucleosynthesis studies. The unstable Tm171 (t1/2=1.92 yr) is part of the branching around mass A∼170 but its neutron capture cross section as a function of the neutron energy is not known to date. In this work, following the production for the first time of more than 5 mg of Tm171 at the high-flux reactor Institut Laue-Langevin in France, a sample was produced at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland. Two complementary experiments were carried out at the neutron time-of-flight facility (n_TOF) at CERN in Switzerland and at the SARAF liquid lithium target facility at Soreq Nuclear Research Center in Israel by time of flight and activation, respectively. The result of the time-of-flight experiment consists of the first ever set of resonance parameters and the corresponding average resonance parameters, allowing us to make an estimation of the Maxwellian-averaged cross sections (MACS) by extrapolation. The activation measurement provides a direct and more precise measurement of the MACS at 30 keV: 384(40) mb, with which the estimation from the n_TOF data agree at the limit of 1 standard deviation. This value is 2.6 times lower than the JEFF-3.3 and ENDF/B-VIII evaluations, 25% lower than that of the Bao et al. compilation, and 1.6 times larger than the value recommended in the KADoNiS (v1) database, based on the only previous experiment. Our result affects the nucleosynthesis at the A∼170 branching, namely, the Yb171 abundance increases in the material lost by asymptotic giant branch stars, providing a better match to the available pre-solar SiC grain measurements compared to the calculations based on the current JEFF-3.3 model-based evaluation.

i-TED consists of both a total energy detector and a Compton camera primarily intended for the measurement of neutron capture cross sections by means of the simultaneous combination of neutron time-of-flight (TOF) and γ -ray imaging techniques. TOF allows one to obtain a neutron-energy differential capture yield, whereas the imaging capability is intended for the discrimination of radiative background sources, that have a spatial origin different from that of the capture sample under investigation. A distinctive feature of i-TED is the embedded Dynamic Electronic Collimation (DEC) concept, which allows for a trade-off between efficiency and image resolution. Here we report on some general design considerations and first performance characterization measurements made with an i-TED demonstrator in order to explore its γ -ray detection and imaging capabilities. Abstract: Background: The growing popularity in western countries of eating uncooked seafood has resulted in an increased incidence of anisakidosis. Aim.: To study the in vitro activity of different concentrations of albendazole against Anisakis simplex larvae under different media pH. Methods: A. simplex larvae were obtained from fresh hakes acquired from the fish market of Madrid. They were divided into groups and placed in culture dishes (15 larvae each) containing RPMI-1640, in the presence or absence of different concentrations of albendazole (300, 400 and 500μg/mL). Results: Albendazole dose-dependently reduced the survival of the larvae, its maximum activity being at 500μg/mL when it killed almost all larvae at 48h. Acidic medium pH significantly reduced the efficacy of albendazole. Conclusion: Albendazole is effective in killing A. simplex larvae at different pH in vitro, suggesting that this molecule could be useful in treating clinical manifestations of human anisakidosis. - Abstract
Interleukin-1, tumor necrosis factor, and in-terleukind inhibit insulin release and may be cytotoxic to isolated pancreatic islets. These cytokines have been postulated to play an important role in the β cell destruction characteristic of type 1 diabetes. The present study was designed to investigate the effect of the above cytokines on insulin, glucagon, somatostatin, and thyrotropin-releasing hormone secretion by isolated human islets. In addition, we have investigated if cytokine-induced modifications in hormone secretion are accompanied by modifications in the ab initio synthesis of any specific lipidic fraction. All three cytokines studied, although not modifying insulin and somatostatin release to glucose 5 mmol/L, inhibited the response of both hormones to glucose 20 mmol/L. On the other hand, the cytokines almost completely blocked islet basal glucagon release, without affecting thyrotropin-releasing hormone secretion. The added cytokines also suppressed 20 mmol/L [U-14C]glu-cose incorporation into both phospholipids and diacyl-glycerol. Our results demonstrate a p-, a-, and & cell, sensitivity to cytokine action. Additionally, they suggest that ab initio lipid synthesis might be implicated in the mechanism of insulin release in human islets.

The$^{235}$U(n, f ) cross section was measured at n_TOF relative to $^{6}$Li(n, t) and $^{10}$B(n,α) , with high resolution ( L=183.49(2) m) and in a wide energy range (25meV-170keV) with 1.5% systematic uncertainty, making use of a stack of six samples and six silicon detectors placed in the neutron beam. This allowed us to make a direct comparison of the yields of the$^{235}$U(n, f ) and of the two reference reactions under the same experimental conditions, and taking into account the forward/backward emission asymmetry. A hint of an anomaly in the 10-30keV neutron energy range had been previously observed in other experiments, indicating a cross section systematically lower by several percent relative to major evaluations. The present results indicate that the cross section in the 9-18keV neutron energy range is indeed overestimated by almost 5% in the recently released evaluated data files ENDF/B-VIII.0 and JEFF3.3, as a consequence of a 7% overestimate in a single GMA node in the IAEA reference file. Furthermore, these new high-resolution data confirm the existence of resonance-like structures in the keV neutron energy region. The results here reported may lead to a reduction of the uncertainty in the 1-100keV neutron energy region. Finally, from the present data, a value of 249.7±1.4(stat)±0.94(syst) b·eV has been extracted for the cross section integral between 7.8 and 11eV, confirming the value of 247.5±3 b·eV recently established as a standard.

The kinematics of two-neutron emission following the $\beta$-decay of $^{11}$Li was investigated for the first time by detecting the two neutrons in coincidence and by measuring their angle and energy. An array of liquid-scintillator neutron detectors was used to reject cosmic-ray and $\gamma$-ray backgrounds by pulse-shape discrimination. Cross-talk events in which two detectors are fired by a single neutron were rejected using a filter tested on the $\beta$-1n emitter $^9$Li. A large cross-talk rejection rate is obtained ($> 95 \%$) over most of the energy range of interest. Application to $^{11}$Li data leads to a significant number of events interpreted as $\beta$-2n decay. A discrete neutron line at $\approx$ 2 MeV indicates sequential two-neutron emission, possibly from the unbound state at 10.6 MeV excitation energy in $^{11}$Be., Comment: 4 pages, Proceedings of the EuNPC2018 Conference

7. Clean energy - Abstract
The CIELO collaboration has studied neutron cross sections on nuclides that significantly impact criticality in nuclear technologies - U-235,U-238, Pu-239, Fe-56, O-16 and H-1 - with the aim of improving the accuracy of the data and resolving previous discrepancies in our understanding. This multi-laboratory pilot project, coordinated via the OECD/NEA Working Party on Evaluation Cooperation (WPEC) Subgroup 40 with support also from the IAEA, has motivated experimental and theoretical work and led to suites of new evaluated libraries that accurately reflect measured data and also perform well in integral simulations of criticality. This report summarizes our results on cross sections and preliminary work on covariances, and outlines plans for the next phase of this collaboration.

The $^{71}$ Ge(n,γ) cross section was measured for neutron energies up to 300keV at the neutron time-of-flight facility n_TOF (CERN), Geneva, for the first time covering energies relevant to heavy-element synthesis in stars. The measurement was performed at the high-resolution beamline EAR-1, using an isotopically enriched $^{72}$GeO$_{2}$ sample. The prompt capture γ rays were detected with four liquid scintillation detectors, optimized for low neutron sensitivity. We determined resonance capture kernelsup to a neutron energy of 43keV, and averaged cross sections from 43 to 300keV. Maxwellian-averaged cross section values were calculated from kT=5 to 100keV, with uncertainties between 3.2% and 7.1 %. The new results significantly reduce uncertainties of abundances produced in the slow neutron capture process in massive stars.

In the measurement of neutron capture cross-sections of fissile isotopes, the fission channel is a source of background which can be removed efficiently using the so-called fission-tagging or fission-veto technique. For this purpose a new compact and fast fission chamber has been developed. The design criteria and technical description of the chamber are given within the context of a measurement of the $^{233}$U(n, $\gamma$) cross-section at the n_TOF facility at CERN, where it was coupled to the n_TOF Total Absorption Calorimeter. For this measurement the fission detector was optimized for time resolution, minimization of material in the neutron beam and for alpha-fission discrimination. The performance of the fission chamber and its application as a fission tagging detector are discussed.

Nuclear Experiment ,7. Clean energy - Abstract
Following the completion of the second neutron beam line and the related experimental area (EAR2) at the n_TOF spallation neutron source at CERN, several experiments were planned and performed. The high instantaneous neutron flux available in EAR2 allows to investigate neutron induced reactions with charged particles in the exit channel even employing targets made out of small amounts of short-lived radioactive isotopes. After the successful measurement of the 7Be(n,𝛼)𝛼 cross section, the 7Be(n,p)7Li reaction was studied in order to provide still missing cross section data of relevance for Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), in an attempt to find a solution to the cosmological Lithium abundance problem. This paper describes the experimental setup employed in such a measurement and its characterization.
