Long-term ambient vibration monitoring campaigns show that environmental parameters (such as temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction) can influence the structures' static and dynamic behaviour. In particular, thermal variations can affect the modal characteristics of ancient masonry constructions. This work presents a procedure combining experimental and numerical steps to monitor, assess and model the dynamic behaviour of masonry structures subjected to thermal loads. The procedure is tested and validated through two numerical examples and the simulation of a full-scale masonry structure, the Mogadouro clock tower in Portugal, monitored with accelerometers and temperature and humidity sensors.

Water scarcity will be one of the most challenging topics to cope with in the following years, especially in the regions most affected by climate change such as the Mediterranean basin. The implementation of water reuse practices thus appears essential to satisfy future water demands in a sustainable way, helping to reduce hydric stress in water-unbalanced regions. However, it remains as an underused practice. To change this situation, the wastewater sector needs to develop some structural changes that include not only the transformation of conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) into novel reclaimed water facilities (RWF), but also some paradigm shifts regarding social, political and legal factors. The goal of this manuscript is to provide a systemic, novel and updated vision of the wastewater treatment sector and to give some recommendations for the implementation of wastewater reuse in agriculture, with a special focus on the Italian case. Extensive data regarding water reuse technologies for the refining, disinfection and advanced oxidation of wastewater is also provided. This comprehensive analysis could help to align the objectives to be achieved from all the perspectives (technical, economic, legal and socio-political), thus helping to fill current gaps and overcome barriers that hinder water reuse development.

Bu çalışmada, Lissotriton schmidtleri (Cüce Semender)’nin iki farklı yükseklikten (Efes, 5 m ve Karagöl, 816 m a.s.l.) elde edilen popülasyonunun yaş yapısı ve vücut ölçülerinin karşılaştırılması yapılmıştır. Parmak enine kesitlerindeki durgunluk çizgilerinin (LAG’ların) sayımıyla yetişkinlerin yaşını tespit etmek için iskelet kronolojisi yöntemi uygulanmıştır. İki popülasyonda dişi taraflı eşeysel dimorfizm gözlenmiştir. Efes ve Karagöl popülasyonlarında hem erkek hem de dişi bireyler 2 yaşında eşeysel olgunluğa erişmişlerdir. Maksimum yaş veya ömür uzunluğu erkeklerde 10 yıl, dişilerde 8 yıl olarak hesaplanmıştır. Tüm bireyler ele alındığında Efes popülasyonunun Karagöl popülasyonundan daha genç olduğu tespit edilmiştir. İki popülasyon için, her iki cinsiyette de yaş ve büyüklük arasında anlamlı pozitif bir korelasyon bulunmuştur.

Rekabetin yoğun olduğu spor branşlarından olan futbolda marşların önemi büyüktür. Taraftarların bu marşları bilmesi, hissederek marşlara eşlik etmeleri müsabaka esnasında takımlara itici güçtür. Bu nedenle takım marşlarının içerdiği anlam çok etkilidir. Çünkü marşlar bireylerin takımlarına karşı hislerini, tutkularını ortaya çıkarmalarına yardımcı olur. Bu çalışmanın amacı Trabzonspor futbol takımına ait marşların kavramlar bağlamında semiyotik analizini yapmaktır. Bu amaçla Trabzonspor resmi sitesinde bulunan marş sözleri, Saussure’ün göstergebilim modeline göre gösteren, gösterilen ve gösterge ilişkisi bağlamında içerik çözümlemesi yapılarak analiz edilmiştir. Bu bağlamda Trabzonspor resmi sitesinde bulunan ve rastlantısal (random) olarak belirlenen 5 marşın sözlerinden alınan kesitler çözümlenmiştir. Göstergebilim araştırmalarında başlangıçtan itibaren belirginlik ilkesinin benimsenmesi zorunludur. Belirginlik ilkesine göre araştırmaya başlarken karar alınır ve derlenmiş olgular diğer tüm yönleri yok sayılarak yalnızca bir yönü ile “bir tek açıdan” betimlenir. Bu ilke gereği diğer yönler göz ardı edilerek yalnızca “kavramlar” bağlamında kesitler çözümlenmiştir. Trabzonspor sitesinde var olan marşların içerik çözümlemesi sonucunda ulaşılan göstergeler; “başarı”, “ait olma”, “bölgesel özellikler”, “adanmışlık”, “sınırsızlık”, “kapsayıcılık”, “taraftar sevgisi” ve “uluslararası başarı” kavramlarıdır. Bunlara ek olarak “başarı” ve “bölgesel özellikler” diğer göstergelere oranla daha fazla öne çıkmıştır. Bu bağlamda kulüp marşları ile takım taraftarları arasında güçlü ve dinamik bir ilişki vardır. Ayrıca bestelenen taraftar marşlarının duygu yoğunluğuna bakıldığına bir amaca dönük olarak bestelendiğini ortaya koymaktadır.

For various reasons, the balance between oxidative stress and the antioxidative defence system is disturbed during general anesthesia. On the other hand, thanks to their antioxidant effect, certain anesthetics have been suggested to protect from oxidative stress caused due to pathological states. In this study, potential antimicrobial and antioxidative activities of commonly used anesthetic drugs were evaluated to reveal possible effects after surgery. The antimicrobial activities of commercially purchased anesthetic drugs diluted with sterile physiological saline were investigated according to the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. Furthermore, minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentrations were determined. Antioxidative potentials of the drugs were screened according to 2,2 diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and hydroxyl (OH●) radical scavenging assays. One of the tested drugs, Ketalar, containing ketamine hydrochloride was found to have an inhibition effect on all tested pathogenic microorganisms. At the same time, Mivacron and Pental Sodium formed the most significant inhibition zones on Micrococcus luteus. As expected, Propofol had no antimicrobial activity on most tested organisms. However, its antioxidant activity was the highest among the other drugs. Calculated SC50 values for DPPH-free and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities of Ultiva, Blok-L, and Zolamid were very close to Propofol. It can be concluded that using these drugs for anesthesia may suppress the risk of contamination and oxidative stress that may occur during use in many cases.

During their evolution, organisms have developed various mechanisms to adapt to changing nutritional conditions such as mobilization of storage molecules and activation of autophagy. In this study, the mechanism of adaptive responses in the midgut of the silkworm Bombyx mori L., 1758 (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) larvae, which were starved for different days, was investigated. The study was carried out at the Insect Physiology Research Laboratory and Silkworm Culture Laboratory at Ege University between 2018 and 2020. For this purpose, the histological structure of the midgut was examined using hematoxylin&eosin staining and its protein, sugar, glycogen, and lipid contents were determined. As autophagy markers, lysosomal enzyme activities were measured and expressions of autophagy-related genes (mTOR, ATG8, and ATG12) were analyzed by qRT-PCR. The results showed that, depending on the time of onset of starvation stress, autophagy plays no role as an adaptive response under starvation conditions or occurs at a much more moderate level than autophagy which happens as part of cell death during larval-pupal metamorphosis.

Nehir, haliç ve lagünler, karasal ve deniz ekosistemleri arasında bağlantıyı sağlarken, tıpkı diğer kirleticilerde olduğu gibi sediment yapılarında da mikroplastik kirliliği hakkında kapsamlı bir profil ortaya koymaktadır. Bu çalışmada, Küçükçekmece Lagünü’nün üç farklı sucul alanından (deniz, kanal ve göl) alınan sediment örneklerinde mikroplastik bolluğu ve karakterizasyonunun belirlenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu kapsamda, lagünde belirlenen 5 istasyondan 12 aylık (Mart 2019 – Şubat 2020) sediment örnekleri alınmıştır. Mikroplastik ön işlemlerine tabi tutulan sediment örneklerinde, stereomikroskop ile mikroplastik bolluğu sayımı ve kategorizasyonu (boyut, tip ve renk) yapılmıştır. Ortalama mikroplastik bolluğu 2922,32±517,35 MP/kg olarak belirlenmiş olup, tespit edilen ortalama mikroplastik bolluğu değeri, ülkemizde daha önce yapılmış benzer çalışmalara kıyasla 2,4 kat daha yüksek bulunmuştur. Liflerin (%59) baskın mikroplastik tipi olduğu, baskın mikroplastik renginin siyah (%42) olduğu ve MP boyutlarının %50’sinin 1-100 μm arasında olduğu belirlenmiştir. Mevsimsel mikroplastik dağılımı irdelendiğinde ise, en yüksek bolluk değerlerinin yağışlı sezon olan kış aylarında olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Çalışma alanında en yüksek ortalama mikroplastik bolluğuna sahip L1 istasyonu, Küçükçekmece Lagünü Bağlantı Alanı temsil etmekte olup, lagündeki tüm antropojenik baskıların hissedildiği istasyon olarak ortaya çıkmaktadır. Bu çalışma, dünyanın diğer bölgelerindeki benzer sediment alanları için mikroplastik bolluğu ve dağılımı hakkında temsili veriler sağlamayı amaçlamaktadır.

Orthochirus stockwelli (Lourenço & Vachon, 1995) was originally described based on male holotype specimen from Bandar-Abbas (Hormozgan) under the genus Paraorthochirus. The morphology of this species is redescribed here based on the specimens collected from Bandar-Abbas on the basis of both sexes. The original description includes a female, but very little information was given on its morphology and does not include illustration belonging to the female. Therefore, the female is described for the first time in this study.

Species of the genus Plecotus, which have distinctive morphology with their long ears, are common in the Palearctic region. Its distribution area in Türkiye is seen as fragmented. In the present study, a new distribution record for Plecotus auritus (Linnaeus, 1758) from Bolu province is given. External characteristics, fur coloration, skull morphology, morphometric measurements, and some ecological characteristics of the specimen were also recorded. The greatest length of skull, condylobasal length, zygomatic breadth, skull height, and largest diameter of tympanic bulla values were measured as high when compared to the data of Plecotus auritus from Türkiye and Central Europe. It is noted that the species' diet includes Galleria mellonella from the order Lepidoptera. Additionally, call length (ms) (1.4- 4.9 mean= 3.4), max. frequency (kHz) (28.8-62.4 mean= 39.9), min. frequency (kHz) (16.8-36.4 mean= 24.3), and peak frequency (kHz) (22.8-35.6 mean= 28.7) acoustic parameters of Plecotus auritus were determined.

The aim of this study was to genotypically and phenotypically evaluate the resistance to heavy metal salts of enterococci isolated from fisheries sold in our country's market for food safety. Using concentrations computed as 1000 ppm of seven heavy metal salts, copper (Cu+2), nickel (Ni+2), cadmium (Cd+2), zinc (Zn+2), lead (Pb+2), chromium (Cr+2), and iron (Fe+2) heavy metal resistance (MIK) tests were conducted on each of the enterococci isolates. As a result of the analyses made in this context, resistance to heavy metal salts such as copper, lead, nickel, and cadmium in many isolates and the presence of copper (tcrB) and cadmium (cadA) resistance genes in some isolates were determined. It is considered that the isolates and the fishery products from which these isolates were obtained may carry risks in terms of food safety and public health. In addition, genes encoding heavy metal resistance are also effective in antibiotic resistance. For this reason, it is stated that these microorganisms gain importance not only in applications such as bioremediation and biomining but also in the healthcare sector.

During a plankton sampling conducted off the northeastern Mediterranean coast of Türkiye, a single female copepod, Caligus minimus Otto, 1821 was collected from a marine plankton sample. C. minimus is a well-known species of the genus Caligus O.F. Müller, 1785 which has been previously reported as a parasite from nine marine fish species belonging to eight different families. To date, however, C. minimus has never been reported from plankton samples. In this study, the general morphology based on the key diagnostic characters of the planktonic C. minimus is presented using confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) images. This is the first report of C. minimus from plankton samples off Turkish waters and global marine environments.
