In the article the legal mechanisms of strengthening altruism in Ukrainian society are analysed. Altruism constantly develops, acquires new forms under act of public relations. In modern Ukrainian society altruism must take the special place in institutionalization of human dignity and rights and freedoms of man, become the norm of social activity. In the article there is a necessity of perfection of normatively­legal base on the basis of principle of altruism, harmonization of relations between the state and civil society in the field of the altruism directed practices. Sharp social contradictions, estrangement of man, can be overcame only through claim of initial social values on principles of idea of dignity and human rights. There must be valuable partnership of the state and eleemosynary organizations in democratic society, creating favourable terms for opening public potential and directing of altruism activity of population. The special attention must be spared to providing of rights for invalids and defencing of them from discrimination.

A key viral property is infectivity, and its accurate measurement is crucial for the understanding of viral evolution, disease and treatment. Currently viral infectivity is measured using plaque assays, which involve prolonged culturing of host cells, and whose measurement is unable to differentiate between specific strains and is prone to low number fluctuation. We developed a rapid, targeted and culture-free infectivity assay using high-throughput drop-based microfluidics. Single infectious viruses are incubated in a large number of picoliter drops with host cells for one viral replication cycle followed by in-drop gene-specific amplification to detect infection events. Using murine noroviruses (MNV) as a model system, we measure their infectivity and determine the efficacy of a neutralizing antibody for different variants of MNV. Our results are comparable to traditional plaque-based assays and plaque reduction neutralization tests. However, the fast, low-cost, highly accurate genomic-based assay promises to be a superior method for drug screening and isolation of resistant viral strains. Moreover our technique can be adapted to measuring the infectivity of other pathogens, such as bacteria and fungi.

The scientific study of hope has progressed rapidly since Rick Snyder first published his theoretical model of hope and developed assessments for quantifying individual differences in hope, but much work remains to more fully understand when, how, and why hope promotes resilience and human flourishing. The field has lost the titans of hope in Rick Snyder and Shane Lopez and is now led by the second generation of hope scientists. In this chapter, a collection of prominent hope researchers share their thoughts on future directions in studying hope. These topics include improving the understanding of how to promote hope; identifying the influence of hope on both positive outcomes such as meaning, healthy coping, and healthy relationships and negative outcomes such as depression; and more generally how hope can help promote flourishing communities. These topics and the researchers studying them represent the future of hope, which has never been brighter.

Improvements to leaf photosynthetic rates of crops can be achieved by targeted manipulation of individual component processes, such as the activity and properties of RuBisCO or photoprotection. This study shows that simple forward genetic screens of mutant populations can also be used to rapidly generate photosynthesis variants that are useful for breeding. Increasing leaf vein density (concentration of vascular tissue per unit leaf area) has important implications for plant hydraulic properties and assimilate transport. It was an important step to improving photosynthetic rates in the evolution of both C3 and C4 species and is a foundation or prerequisite trait for C4 engineering in crops like rice (Oryza sativa). A previous high throughput screen identified five mutant rice lines (cv. IR64) with increased vein densities and associated narrower leaf widths (Feldman et al., 2014). Here, these high vein density rice variants were analyzed for properties related to photosynthesis. Two lines were identified as having significantly reduced mesophyll to bundle sheath cell number ratios. All five lines had 20% higher light saturated photosynthetic capacity per unit leaf area, higher maximum carboxylation rates, dark respiration rates and electron transport capacities. This was associated with no significant differences in leaf thickness, stomatal conductance or CO2 compensation point between mutants and the wild-type. The enhanced photosynthetic rate in these lines may be a result of increased RuBisCO and electron transport component amount and/or activity and/or enhanced transport of photoassimilates. We conclude that high vein density (associated with altered mesophyll cell length and number) is a trait that may confer increased photosynthetic efficiency without increased transpiration.

Photochemical reaction dynamics of the primary events in recombinant bacteriorhodopsin (bRrec) was studied by femtosecond laser absorption spectroscopy with 25-fs time resolution. bRrec was produced in an Escherichia coli expression system. Since bRrec was prepared in a DMPC–CHAPS micelle system in the monomeric form, its comparison with trimeric and monomeric forms of the native bacteriorhodopsin (bRtrim and bRmon, respectively) was carried out. We found that bRrec intermediate I (excited state of bR) was formed in the range of 100 fs, as in the case of bRtrim and bRmon. Further processes, namely the decay of the excited state I and the formation of intermediates J and K of bRrec, occurred more slowly compared to bRtrim, but similarly to bRmon. The lifetime of intermediate I, judging from the signal of ΔA ESA(470-480 nm), was 0.68 ps (78%) and 4.4 ps (22%) for bRrec, 0.52 ps (73%) and 1.7 ps (27%) for bRmon, and 0.45 ps (90%) and 1.75 ps (10%) for bRtrim. The formation time of intermediate K, judging from the signal of ΔA GSA(625-635 nm), was 13.5 ps for bRrec, 9.8 ps for bRmon, and 4.3 ps for bRtrim. In addition, there was a decrease in the photoreaction efficiency of bRrec and bRmon as seen by a decrease in absorbance in the differential spectrum of the intermediate K by ~14%. Since photochemical properties of bRrec are similar to those of the monomeric form of the native protein, bRrec and its mutants can be considered as a basis for further studies of the mechanism of bacteriorhodopsin functioning.

A comparative analysis of fluorescence lifetime of lipofuscin granule fluorophores contained in the retinal pigment epithelium cells from human cadaver eyes in normal state and in the case of visualized pathology was carried out. Measurements of fluorescence lifetimes of bis-retinoids and their photooxidation and photodegradation products were carried out using the method of counting time-correlated photons. Comparative analysis showed that, in the case of visualized pathology, the contribution of photooxidation and photodegradation products of bis-retinoids to the total fluorescence of the retinal pigment epithelium cell suspension increases in comparison with the norm.

Fundus autofluorescence mostly originates from bisretinoid fluorophores in lipofuscin granules, which accumulate in retinal-pigment-epithelium cells with age. The dynamics of accumulation, photo-oxidation, and photodegradation of bisretinoids during aging or in the presence of pathology have been insufficiently investigated. Changes in spectral properties and composition of human lipofuscin-granule fluorophores with age and pathology have now been investigated by a high-performance liquid chromatography method using spectrophotometric and fluorescent detectors connected in series. It was found that: (i) N-retinylidene-N-retinylethanolamine (A2E) fluorescence intensity is not predominant in the chloroform extract of human-cadaver-eye retinal pigment epithelium studied; bisretinoid photo-oxidation and photodegradation products have much higher fluorescent properties; (ii) the relative emission maximum in the fluorescence spectrum of suspended retinal-pigment-epithelium cells obtained from an individual human-cadaver eye without pathology is irrespective of donor age and falls within the range 575 ± 15 nm; in two cadaver eyes with signs of age-related macular degeneration, emission maxima were shifted by 23-36 nm towards the shortwave region; and (iii) the ratio of bisretinoid photo-oxidation and photodegradation products to unoxidized bisretinoids in the chloroform extract of cadaver-eye retinal pigment epithelium increases with donor age, from 0.69 ± 0.03 to 1.32 ± 0.04. The differences in fluorescence properties between chloroform extracts obtained from cadaver eyes with and without signs of age-related macular degeneration could be used to increase the potential of fundus autofluorescence imaging as a noninvasive diagnostic method.

Ultrafast reverse photoreaction of visual pigment rhodopsin in the femtosecond time range at room temperature is demonstrated. Femtosecond two-pump probe experiments with a time resolution of 25 fs have been performed. The first pump pulse at 500 nm initiated cis-trans photoisomerization of rhodopsin chromophore, 11-cis retinal, which resulted in the formation of the primary ground-state photoproduct within a mere 200 fs. The second pump pulse at 620 nm with a varying delay of 200 to 3750 fs relative to the first pump pulse, initiated the reverse phototransition of the primary photoproduct to rhodopsin. The results of this photoconversion have been observed on the differential spectra obtained after the action of two pump pulses at a time delay of 100 ps. It was found that optical density decreased at 560 nm in the spectral region of bathorhodopsin absorption and increased at 480 nm, where rhodopsin absorbs. Rhodopsin photoswitching efficiency shows oscillations as a function of the time delay between two pump pulses. The quantum yield of reverse photoreaction initiated by the second pump pulse falls within the range 15% ± 1%. The molecular mechanism of the ultrafast reversible photoreaction of visual pigment rhodopsin may be used as a concept for the development of an ultrafast optical molecular switch.

Program evaluation offers an opportunity for improving the implementation and impact of art therapy. This article describes a process and outcomes evaluation of an art therapy program within the mental health services unit of a community-based organization for people living with HIV/AIDS. The aims were to assess utilization patterns and program impact on decreasing depression and improving health-related quality of life among HIV-positive individuals who received art therapy services during a 5-year period (N = 255). Short-term group art therapy services were found to be most frequently utilized. Significant changes in symptoms of depression and mental health–related quality of life were observed in a subsample of clients (n = 25) between baseline and a 6-month follow-up assessment. The findings, which underscore the value of program evaluation, may be useful in improving art therapy services for people living with HIV/AIDS.

The dynamics of the coherent photoisomerization of the 11-cis-retinal in bovine rhodopsin is studied by femtosecond time-resolved laser absorption spectroscopy with a resolution of 30 fs. Rhodopsin is excited with 500-, 535-, and 560-nm femtosecond pulses to produce different initial Franck-Condon states with different vibrational energies of the molecule in its electronically excited state. The time evolution of the photoinduced differential absorption spectra of rhodopsin is measured upon excitation with a femtosecond pulse in a spectral range from 400 to 720 nm. Oscillations in the time-resolved absorption of the rhodopsin photoproducts, such as photorhodopsin with a vibrationally excited all-trans-retinal and in its initial-state rhodopsin with a vibrationally excited 11-cis-retinal, are examined. It is demonstrated that these oscillations reflect the dynamics of coherent vibrational wavepackets. The Fourier transform of these oscillatory components yields frequencies, amplitudes, and initial phases of various vibrational modes involved in the motion the wavepackets in both photoproducts. The main vibrational modes manifest themselves at frequencies of 62 and 160 cm−1 for photorhodopsin and 44 and 142 cm−1 for initial-state rhodopsin. It is shown that these vibrational modes are directly involved in the coherent reaction under the study, with their amplitudes in the power spectrum produced by the Fourier transform of the kinetic curves being dependent on the wavelength of rhodopsin excitation.

The pharmacological properties and mechanisms of action of the flavanoid rutin were reviewed. Rutin can interact with free radicals and various protein systems to exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-allergy, and antitumor activity. At present, much research is devoted to studies of the mechanisms of rutin pharmacological action.

Objectives:Feldman (2011) has proposed a new approach to the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in individuals at the end-of-life known as Stepwise Psychosocial Palliative Care (SPPC). This approach helps to compensate for the disadvantages of existing PTSD interventions with regard to treating patients with life-limiting and terminal illnesses by employing a palliative care philosophy. The model relies on cognitive and behavioral techniques drawn from evidence-based approaches to PTSD, deploying them in a stage-wise manner designed to allow for interventions to track with patents’ needs and prognoses. Because this model is relatively new, we seek to explore issues related to its implementation in the complex settings in which providers encounter patients at the end-of-life. We also seek to provide concrete guidance to providers regarding the management of PTSD at the end-of-life in diverse palliative care settings.Methods:We examine three specific cases in which the SPPC model was utilized, highlighting particular treatment challenges and strategies. These case studies provide information regarding the SPPC model's application to patients in two distinct palliative care settings—a palliative care consult team and an inpatient palliative care unit.Results:The SPPC model's stage-wise approach allows for its flexible use given a variety of constraints related to setting and patient issues.Significance of results:The SPPC model provides an alternative to existing psychosocial treatments for PTSD that may be more appropriate for patients at the end of life.

Introduction The implementation of early long-term, regular clotting factor concentrate (CFC) replacement therapy (‘prophylaxis’) has made it possible to offer boys with haemophilia a near normal life. Many different regimens have reported favourable results, but the optimum treatment regimens have not been established and the cost of prophylaxis is very high. Both for optimizing treatment and reimbursement issues, there is a need to provide objective evidence of both short- and long-term results and benefits of prophylactic regimens. Aims This report presents a critical review of outcome measures for use in the assessment of musculoskeletal health in persons with haemophilia according to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). This framework considers structural and functional changes, activities and participation in a context of both personal and environmental factors. Methods Results were generated by a combination of a critical review of available literature plus expert opinion derived from a two day consensus conference between 48 health care experts from different disciplines involved in haemophilia assessment and care. Outcome tools used in haemophilia were reviewed for reliability and validity in different patient groups and for resources required. Results and conclusion Recommendations for choice of outcome tools were made according to the ICF domains, economic setting, and reason for use (clinical or research). The next step will be to identify a ‘core’ set of outcome measures for use in clinical care or studies evaluating treatment.

Predicting viral evolution remains a major challenge with profound implications for public health. Viral evolutionary pathways are determined by the fitness landscape, which maps viral genotype to fitness. However, a quantitative description of the landscape and the evolutionary forces on it remain elusive. Here, we apply a biophysical fitness model based on capsid folding stability and antibody binding affinity to predict the evolutionary pathway of norovirus escaping a neutralizing antibody. The model is validated by experimental evolution in bulk culture and in a drop-based microfluidics device, the “Evolution Chip”, which propagates millions of independent viral sub-populations. We demonstrate that along the axis of binding affinity, selection for escape variants and drift due to random mutations have the same direction. However, along folding stability, selection and drift are opposing forces whose balance is tuned by viral population size. Our results demonstrate that predictable epistatic tradeoffs shape viral evolution.

Alternation of the amplitude of the repolarization wave (T-wave) of the body surface ECG, usually referred to as T-wave alternans (TWA), has become one of the most important noninvasive tools in cardiac risk stratification. In earlier experimental and clinical studies TWA was shown to predict an individual's susceptibility of ventricular tachyarrhythmias. Recently, a number of prospectively designed clinical studies have confirmed these results and demonstrated that a positive TWA result in high risk populations, such as post-myocardial infarction patients and individuals suffering from congestive heart failure, is a very useful prognostic marker heralding sudden cardiac death due to ventricuar tachyarrhythmias. Moreover, experiments, performed in animals as well as in computer models, have shown that T-wave alternans may also be mechanistically involved in arrhythmogenesis. Since it has now become possible to measure TWA completely noninvasively by menas of exercise testing, an exponential increase in TWA tests has been observed. However, little information on the technical aspects of TWA testing is available. Therefore, in this article, technical and practical aspects of TWA assessment and interpretation are reviewed as far as they are relevant for clinicians.

Background : The natural, inflammatory repair processes of an injured intervertebral degenerative disc can propagate further injury and destruction. While there are many different treatment modalities of the pain related to degenerative disc disease, none are actually reparative in nature. Treatment strategies to repair a degenerative disc without inducing a destructive inflammatory milieu have been elusive. Purpose: The purpose of this experiment is to discover the feasibility of reconstructing an injured intervertebral disc using an injected, inert polymer as the foundation for endogenous collagen growth. Study Design: In this ovine model of six subjects in total, we introduce a modality where a large inert polymer, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), in conjunction bovine collagen (BC) is injected into the intervertebral disc. Following six months of observation, histologic specimens were evaluated macroscopically and microscopically for evidence of a benefit of the injectable PMMA/BC. Methods: We obtained six merino sheep for this study. Concentric injuries were made to four of their lumbar intervertebral discs. Two of those levels were treated with a percutaneous injection of 0.3 cc of PMMA/BC. The remaining lumbar levels were left untreated and were our controls. After six months, all subjects were sacrificed. Their four levels were extracted and were examined macroscopically and microscopically. Results: All subjects tolerated the lumbar injury and percutaneous injection of PMMA/BC well. After the six month interval, all subjects have demonstrated an intact architecture of their lumbar disc height at the macroscopic and microscopic level. Microscopically, there was no evidence of external migration of the PMMA/BC microspheres, nor was there any evidence of an inflammatory response by its presence. Notably, the PMMA/BC microspheres were well-incorporated into the concentric disc tears and had undergone endogenous collagen formation in its environment. Treatment levels were revealing for maintenance of disc height without evidence of an ongoing degeneration. The controlled levels were revealing for continued disc degeneration with loss of disc height and evolving injury at the level of the concentric tear. Conclusions: This ovine model demonstrates a novel and promising technique for prevention and arrest of lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration.

Photochromic ultrafast reactions of bacteriorhodopsin ( H . salinarum ) and bovine rhodopsin were conducted with a femtosecond two-pump probe pulse setup with the time resolution of 20–25 fs. The dynamics of the forward and reverse photochemical reactions for both retinal-containing proteins was compared. It is demonstrated that when retinal-containing proteins are excited by femtosecond pulses, dynamics pattern of the vibrational coherent wave packets in the course of the reaction is different for bacteriorhodopsin and visual rhodopsin. As shown in these studies, the low-frequencies that form a wave packets experimentally observed in the dynamics of primary products formation as a result of retinal photoisomerization have different intensities and are clearer for bovine rhodopsin. Photo-reversible reactions for both retinal proteins were performed from the stage of the relatively stable photointermediates that appear within 3–5 ps after the light pulse impact. It is demonstrated that the efficiency of the reverse phototransition K -form → bacteriorhodopsin is almost five-fold higher than that of the Batho -intermediate → visual rhodopsin phototransition. The results obtained indicate that in the course of evolution the intramolecular mechanism of the chromophore-protein interaction in visual rhodopsin becomes more perfect and specific. The decrease in the probability of the reverse chromophore photoisomerization (all- trans → 11- cis retinal) in primary photo-induced rhodopsin products causes an increase in the efficiency of the photoreception process.

Introduction Minimally invasive lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) approaches to the lumbar spine reduce patient morbidity compared to anterior or posterior alternatives. This approach, however, decreases direct anatomical visualization, creating the need for highly sensitive and specific neurophysiological monitoring. We seek to determine feasibility in 'transabdominal motor action potential (TaMAP)' monitoring as an assessment for the integrity of the neural elements during lateral-approach surgeries to the lumbar spine. Methods Cathode and anode leads were placed on the posterior and anterior surfaces of two porcine subjects. Currents of varying degrees were transmitted across, from front to back. Motor responses were monitored and recorded by needle electrodes in specific distal muscle groups of the lower extremity. Lastly, the cathode and anode were placed anterior and posterior to the chest wall and stimulated to the maximum of 1500 mA to determine any effect on cardiac rhythm. Results Responses were seen by measuring vertical height differences between peaks of corresponding evoked potentials. Recruitment began at 200 mA in the lower extremities. Stimulation at 450 mA recruited a reliable and distinguishable electrographic response from most muscle groups. Responses were recorded and reliably measured and increased in proportion to the graduation of transabdominal stimulation current; no responses were seen in the arms or face. 1500 mA across the chest wall failed to stimulate or induce cardiac arrhythmia on repeated stimulation, indicating safety of stimulation. Conclusion TaMAPs seen in the animal model provide a potential alternative to standard transcranial motor evoked potentials done in the lateral approach of LLIFs. TaMAP recordings in most muscle groups were recordable and reliable, though some muscle groups failed to stimulate. Safety of transabdominal motor evoked potentials was confirmed in this porcine study. Future studies should examine TaMAPs reliability in detecting compressive lesions of nerve roots and peripheral nerves.

Lipofuscin granules accumulate in the cells of retinal pigment epithelium with age, particularly in patients with hereditary diseases. These granules are heterogeneous, being composed of mixtures of proteins and lipids, including more than 21 different fluorescent compounds. Bisretinoids and their photo-oxidation and photodegradation products represent the main source of lipofuscin fluorescence and exhibit phototoxic properties. This study used time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF–SIMS) with in-depth probing to assess the depth distribution of N-retinylidene-N-retinylethanolamine (A2E) and its singly and doubly oxidized forms (A2E-ox and A2E-2ox, respectively) within lipofuscin granules and in their surface layer (lipid membrane). ToF–SIMS showed that A2E and its oxidized forms were uniformly distributed throughout lipofuscin granules but were not present at the membrane surface layer. This finding is important for understanding the process involved in the formation of lipofuscin granules and in their toxicity.

The review concerns literature data on the structure, functions and molecular simulation of rhodopsin. The mechanisms of the spectral tuning of visual pigments, photoisomerization of the rhodopsin chromophore group (11-cis-retinal moiety) and the formation of the physiologically active state of rhodopsin as a G-protein-coupled receptor are considered. Particular attention is given to the rhodopsin visual cycle and pathogenetic consequences of its impairment. A knowledge of the structure and photochemistry of rhodopsin was shown to be of importance for the use in nanotechnology of the future. The bibliography includes 219 references.

Saturation transfer EPR spectroscopy is used to study the photoinduced conformational changes of spin-labeled (Cys140 and Cys316) rhodopsin in a photoreceptor membrane. Illumination of rhodopsin with “yellow” light (λ > 450 nm), converting it from the dark form into metarhodopsin II, a physiologically active form, is accompanied by an increase in the mobility of the cytoplasmic loop (Cys140) and eighth alpha-helix (Cys316), whereas the subsequent illumination with “blue” light (λ < 445 nm), which converts metarhodopsin II into a mixture of inactive photoregenerated products, results in a decrease in the mobility. The restoration of the specific features of the photoinduced changes in the conformational mobility of the cytoplasmic loops of rhodopsin regenerated in the dark is demonstrated.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the intersection of external and internal accountability systems within urban schools, and the role of school leadership, especially that of the principal, in managing this intersection. In particular, the paper explores how school leaders are able to strengthen and sustain the school's internal accountability system, in pursuit of school‐defined learning improvement agenda, and at the same time respond productively to external accountability demands. The paper also seeks to identify consequences of these leaders’ efforts to navigate an often problematic set of converging demands.Design/methodology/approachThis paper draws on findings from a larger multi‐case study of learning‐focused leadership in 15 schools in four urban school districts in the USA. Schools were chosen to represent those that were “making progress” (by local measures). Data were collected over 18 months, spanning two school years, from Spring 2007 to Fall 2008. Data collection included multiple site visits, semi‐structured interviews and observations of leadership activity across school and district settings, and a variety of documentary evidence.FindingsThough working in substantially different contexts, these leaders found remarkably similar ways of crafting tools and creating occasions, from the array of external accountability demands and resources, to serve internal accountability purposes. They did so by internalizing external expectations and developing accountable practice within the school, leading through data, and modelling what it meant to learn to lead in a fully accountable way. As they did so, they reshaped the scope of instruction and the instructional improvement conversation, and also made teaching and leadership practice more public.Originality/valueThis paper extends discussions of school‐level accountability in two ways. First, it updates scholarship on accountability by examining school‐level responses at a time five years into the new accountability context in the USA defined by strict system‐wide expectations and mechanisms. Second, the paper demonstrates ways in which the often onerous demands of external accountability systems can be treated as a resource by school leaders and used in ways that bolster the school's capacity for accountable professional practice.

A family of structurally related protein toxins extracted from bacteria or plants have a similar mechanism of action, namely, blocking protein synthesis by ribosome inactivation. Members of this family of ribosome-inactivating proteins (RIP), classified simultaneously as chemical and biological threat agents, include ricin, abrin, and shiga toxins. We have adapted and streamlined mass spectrometry based functional assays, described by others, to develop a rapid, robust, broad-band and fieldable protocol with the primary goal of RIP toxin detection in unknown powder materials. Complementary to intact protein detection and proteomics methods, this protocol involves monitoring the depurination of selected DNA substrates by mass spectrometry. It is being implemented on the CB-TOF system for rapid detection of bio-threats by MALDI MS. Here we illustrate its performance on the example of a plant (ricin) and a bacterial (shiga) RIP toxin.

This study evaluated the Rapid Response System, an initiative designed to link people living with HIV/AIDS with mental health services at an AIDS service organization. Data were extracted from agency records for 314 clients who had contact with the Rapid Response System over a 6-month period. Of the 281 clients who scheduled an appointment for an evaluation to initiate mental health services, 64% completed the evaluation. In the multivariate analysis, Latinos were significantly less likely than whites to complete the mental health evaluation. Further, there was a significant decrease in the likelihood of completing the mental health evaluation as the number of days between the Rapid Response System contact and the date of the evaluation appointment increased. Strategies that reduce the period of time between the initial referral and initiation of services may facilitate linkage with mental health treatment, particularly in the context of larger multi-service organizations.

The purpose of this article is to present a best practice model for adolescent prenatal care. Increasing rates of unplanned pregnancies coupled with the highest rates of all age groups with inadequate prenatal care make this population especially vulnerable to birth risks and maternal–infant relational problems. While there is much literature on individual level variables that affect prenatal care adherence such as age, poverty, low self-esteem, and transportation, there is little practice based research knowledge on diminishing potential birth risks by repairing and building the maternal–infant (fetus) relationship prior to the actual birth of the child. Using findings from the author’s former study, practitioner experience, and a review of evidence based literature, the article presents an innovative attachment theory based prenatal care model for social work practitioners and other health care professionals working with pregnant adolescents.

A healthy diet is essential to maintaining a strong immune system for people living with HIV and AIDS. Prior studies have shown that HIV-positive gay and bisexual men are more susceptible to poor body image, which can negatively impact dietary habits. Interventions that simultaneously address body image and nutrition are therefore critical for this population. This paper describes the curriculum for a 14-week group designed to improve body image satisfaction and dietary habits in gay and bisexual men living with HIV/AIDS.

A community needs assessment was conducted at an AIDS service organization in New York City to inform the development of an HIV and substance abuse prevention program for black and Latino young men who have sex with men (YMSM). Data from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene indicated that HIV infections in Black and Latino YMSM were concentrated in Brooklyn and Queens. Evidence from existing studies of YMSM suggested that Black and Latino YMSM are more likely than other YMSM to be HIV infected and unaware of their diagnosis. Furthermore, partner characteristics and peer norms might influence HIV infection and HIV sexual risk behavior, particularly among Black YMSM. Recommendations include routine HIV/sexually transmitted infection testing and addressing issues around sexual partners and communication about HIV status and condom use in the context of HIV prevention activities for Black and Latino YMSM.

Despite extensive research demonstrating relationships between hope and well being, little work addresses whether hope is malleable. We test a single-session, 90-min intervention to increase college students’ hopeful goal-directed thinking (as defined by Snyder et al. in, Pers Soc Psychol 60:570–585, 1991). To date, this study represents the only test of hope’s malleability in fewer than five sessions and contributes to the small but growing literature regarding positive-psychology interventions. This intervention is especially relevant to college students, given the increasing psychological distress and lack of perceived control noted among this population (Lewinsohn et al. in, J Abnorm Psychol 102:110–120, 1993; Twenge et al. in, Pers Soc Psychol Rev 8:308–319, 2004). Ninety-six participants were assigned to the hope intervention or one of two comparison/control conditions—progressive muscle relaxation or no intervention. Assessment occurred prior to intervention (pre-test), following intervention (post-test), and at one-month follow-up. Participants in the hope intervention showed increases in measures of hope, life purpose, and vocational calling from pre- to post-test relative to control participants. They also reported greater progress on a self-nominated goal at one-month follow-up. Counterintuitively, although hope predicted goal progress, hope did not mediate the relationship between intervention condition and goal progress. Implications of these findings and future directions are discussed.

This study examines the prevalence of psychiatric disorders among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) men with eating disorders. A total of 388 white, black, and Latino LGB men and women were sampled from community venues. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) diagnoses of anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder were assessed using the World Health Organization's Composite International Diagnostic Interview. Gay and bisexual men with eating disorders were more likely to have an anxiety or substance abuse disorder than gay and bisexual men without eating disorders, whereas lesbian and bisexual women with eating disorders were more likely to have a mood disorder than lesbian and bisexual women without an eating disorder. For individuals diagnosed with an eating and anxiety or major depressive disorder, the onset of the psychiatric disorder was more likely to precede the onset of the eating disorder. Researchers should study potential explanations of the relationship between eating and psychiatric disorders among LGB men and women.

The content of carotenoids and retinoids was compared in the eyes of two Finnish populations of the opossum shrimp, Mysis relicta, which have been reproductively isolated for at least 9000 years: one from the deep, dark, Lake Paajarvi, the other from the Baltic Sea (Pojoviken Bay). The eyes of the lake population (LP) are highly susceptible to light damage, while those of the sea population (SP) are more resistant. Carotenoids are known to act as antioxidants protecting cells against free radicals and reactive oxygen species; retinoids, on the contrary, may be phototoxic in certain conditions. Analyzed by spectrophotometry and HPLC, the carotenoid content was broadly similar in the eyes of the two populations as regards both total amount and relative proportions of more than 20 components. Noteworthy differences were found in only three of the major components, among these astaxanthin, which was two times higher in SP compared with LP. Typical career planning courses assist students with the self-assessment process, career exploration, and decision making. Although this assistance is helpful, college students are increasingly concerned with issues of meaning and calling (P. Braun, 2005). The authors describe and test the effectiveness of the Let Your Life Speak course, a program to help students articulate their framework of life meaning and increase their sense of vocational calling. Results indicate an increase in sense of vocational calling, greater confidence in ability to achieve goals, and a deepened framework of life meaning. Moreover, 96% reported they would recommend the course to others.

Visible light-induced changes in fluorescence characteristics of lipofuscin granules (LG) isolated from retinal pigment epithelium of human cadaver eyes are compared with the analogous age-related changes and correlated with the content and photooxidation of LG main fluorophore, A2E. We used HPLC to examine changes of LG fluorophore composition with donor age, as well as before and after visible-light irradiation (the latter HPLC tests were also done with synthetic A2E). Visible light induces oxidation of LG fluorophores. As a result, their fluorescence characteristics change: the emission spectrum is blue-shifted by 25–40 nm. The observed age-dependent changes in the relative content of LG fluorophores and their oxidized derivatives were qualitatively similar with those caused by irradiation. To improve the accuracy of a new noninvasive diagnostic method, fundus autofluorescence imaging, it is important to know the ratio of nonoxidized and oxidized fluorophore derivatives depending on age and eye pathology.

The popular hypothesis that dietary fat intake is an important risk factor for breast cancer in women has been challenged by data from numerous epidemiologic studies that show no relationship of the quantity or type of fat to disease incidence. Reasons for this discrepancy and current recommendations are discussed.

Despite the impressive literature addressing Snyder's (1994) Hope Theory, the theory's basic hypothesis that hope predicts goal attainment has never been tested. We provide a longitudinal test of this prediction among 162 college students. Participants completed measures of hope and goal importance at the beginning of the semester. Three months later, they completed measures of goal attainment and hope again. Results indicate that a goal-specific measure of hope (particularly the agency subscale) predicted goal attainment better than the Hope Scale (Snyder et al., 1991), which measures hope regarding goals in general. The influence of Time 1 goal importance upon Time 2 attainment was largely mediated through goal-specific hope. Moreover, participants appeared to adjust their Time 2 hope levels based on their actual goal attainment.

This article discusses a new treatment paradigm combining couples therapy with a separate relationship-focused group therapy for each partner. This model is thought to be especially efficacious for those couples experiencing difficulty in making progress in couples treatment alone. The authors postulate that the addition of a separate group process utilizing object relations and self-psycho- logical theories, as well as concepts borrowed from Imago relationship therapy, enhance the probability of working through intractable transference projections that tend to be impervious to either treatment modality on its own. Challenges created by this combined approach as well as benefits are addressed. Theoretical rationale and treatment implications are discussed.

The interaction of all-trans-retinal (hereinafter referred to as retinal) with planar bilayer lipid membranes has been studied. Addition of retinal into aqueous solutions on both sides of the membrane formed from diphytanoilphosphatidylcholine (DPhPC) or its mixture with diphytanoilphosphatidylethanolamine (DPhPC/DPhPE in w/w proportion of 3: 5) led to a change of conductance induced by ionophores nonactin (increase of conductance) or pentachlorophenol (decrease). Increase of nonactin-induced conductance was dependent on the membrane lipid composition and was two times higher in the case of DPhPC/DPhPE mixture. The change of conductance caused by ionophores of different signs (plus or minus) had different direction suggesting the influence of the retinal on the dipole potential upon its incorporation into BLM. The boundary potentials difference measured by the intramembrane field compensation method (IFC) after the retinal addition on one side of the membrane did not exceed 2.5 mV suggesting that its distribution in the bilayer is almost symmetrical. The illumination of the retinal-containing BLM caused a decrease in its lifetime when the membranes were formed from unsaturated lipids. Retinal incorporated into BLM led also to photoinactivation of the gramicidin channels. The process was completely inhibited by a singlet oxygen quencher (sodium azide). These results indicate that retinal accumulated in the membrane can affect both membrane proteins and the unsaturated lipids by their oxidation by the singlet oxygen.

We have reproduced the model system containing A2-rhodopsin, NR-PE, A2-PE, and ATR-dimer-PE in order to study photosensitized damage of rhodopsin within photoreceptor membranes of rod outer segments. We have demonstrated that irradiation of such a system with visible light (400-700 nm) distorts the most important functional property of native visual pigment--its ability to regenerate after addition of 11-cis-retinal in the dark. We have also shown that all-trans-retinal bound to membrane phospholipids and rhodopsin has less photosensitizing activity that free all-trans-retinal.
