The magma ocean (MO) is a crucial stage in the build-up of terrestrial planets. Its solidification and the accompanying outgassing of volatiles set the conditions for important processes occurring later or even simultaneously, such as solid-state mantle convection and atmospheric escape. To constrain the duration of a global-scale Earth MO we have built and applied a 1D interior model coupled alternatively with a grey H2O/CO2 atmosphere or with a pure H2O atmosphere treated with a line-by-line model described in a companion paper by Katyal et al. (2019). We study in detail the effects of several factors affecting the MO lifetime, such as the initial abundance of H2O and CO2, the convection regime, the viscosity, the mantle melting temperature, and the longwave radiation absorption from the atmosphere. In this specifically multi-variable system we assess the impact of each factor with respect to a reference setting commonly assumed in the literature. We find that the MO stage can last from a few thousand to several million years. By coupling the interior model with the line-by-line atmosphere model, we identify the conditions that determine whether the planet experiences a transient magma ocean or it ceases to cool and maintains a continuous magma ocean. We find a dependence of this distinction simultaneously on the mass of the outgassed H2O atmosphere and on the MO surface melting temperature. We discuss their combined impact on the MO's lifetime in addition to the known dependence on albedo, orbital distance and stellar luminosity and we note observational degeneracies that arise thereby for target exoplanets.

Context. X-rays and extreme ultraviolet radiation impacting a gas produce a variety of effects that, depending on the electron content, may provide significant heating of the illuminated region. In a planetary atmosphere of solar composition, stellar high energy radiation can heat the gas to very high temperatures and this could affect the stability of planetary atmospheres, in particular for close-in planets. Aims. We investigate the variations with stellar age in the occurring frequency of gas giant planets orbiting G and M stars, taking into account that the high energy luminosity of a low mass star evolves in time, both in intensity and hardness. Methods. Using the energy-limited escape approach we investigated the effects induced by the atmospheric mass loss on giant exoplanet distribution that is initially flat, at several distances from the parent star. We followed the dynamical evolution of the planet atmosphere, tracking the departures from the initial profile due to the atmospheric escape, until it reaches the final mass-radius configuration. Results. We find that a significant fraction of low mass Jupiter-like planets orbiting with periods lower than ~3.5 days either vaporize during the first billion years or lose a relevant part of their atmospheres. The planetary initial mass profile is significantly distorted; in particular, the frequency of occurrence of gas giants, less massive than 2 MJ, around young stars can be considerably greater than their occurrence around older stellar counterparts.

Near-term studies of Venus-like atmospheres with JWST promise to advance our knowledge of terrestrial planet evolution. However, the remote study of Venus in the Solar System and the ongoing efforts to characterize gaseous exoplanets both suggest that high altitude aerosols could limit observational studies of lower atmospheres, and potentially make it challenging to recognize exoplanets as "Venus-like". To support practical approaches for exo-Venus characterization with JWST, we use Venus-like atmospheric models with self-consistent cloud formation of the seven TRAPPIST-1 exoplanets to investigate the atmospheric depth that can be probed using both transmission and emission spectroscopy. We find that JWST/MIRI LRS secondary eclipse emission spectroscopy in the 6 $\mu$m opacity window could probe at least an order of magnitude deeper pressures than transmission spectroscopy, potentially allowing access to the sub-cloud atmosphere for the two hot innermost TRAPPIST-1 planets. In addition, we identify two confounding effects of sulfuric acid aerosols that may carry strong implications for the characterization of terrestrial exoplanets with transmission spectroscopy: (1) there exists an ambiguity between cloud-top and solid surface in producing the observed spectral continuum; and (2) the cloud-forming region drops in altitude with semi-major axis, causing an increase in the observable cloud-top pressure with decreasing stellar insolation. Taken together, these effects could produce a trend of thicker atmospheres observed at lower stellar insolation---a convincing false positive for atmospheric escape and an empirical "cosmic shoreline". Terrestrial planets orbiting M dwarfs may soon be observed with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to characterize their atmospheric composition and search for signs of habitability or life. These planets may undergo significant atmospheric and ocean loss due to the superluminous pre-main-sequence phase of their host stars, which may leave behind abiotically-generated oxygen, a false positive for the detection of life. Determining if ocean loss has occurred will help assess potential habitability and whether or not any O2 detected is biogenic. In the solar system, differences in isotopic abundances have been used to infer the history of ocean loss and atmospheric escape (e.g. Venus, Mars). We find that isotopologue measurements using transit transmission spectra of terrestrial planets around late-type M dwarfs like TRAPPIST-1 may be possible with JWST, if the escape mechanisms and resulting isotopic fractionation were similar to Venus. We present analyses of post-ocean-loss O2- and CO2-dominated atmospheres, containing a range of trace gas abundances. Isotopologue bands are likely detectable throughout the near-infrared (1-8 um), especially 3-4 um, although not in CO2-dominated atmospheres. For Venus-like D/H ratios 100 times that of Earth, TRAPPIST-1 b transit signals of up to 79 ppm are possible by observing HDO. Similarly, 18O/16O ratios 100 times that of Earth produce signals at up to 94 ppm. Detection at S/N=5 may be attained on these bands with as few as four to eleven transits, with optimal use of JWST NIRSpec Prism. Consequently, H2O and CO2 isotopologues could be considered as indicators of past ocean loss and atmospheric escape for JWST observations of terrestrial planets around M dwarfs., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, accepted to The Astronomical Journal

Atmospheric escape is an important factor shaping the exoplanet population and hence drives our understanding of planet formation. Atmospheric escape from giant planets is driven primarily by the stellar X-ray and extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation. Furthermore, EUV and longer wavelength UV radiation power disequilibrium chemistry in the middle and upper atmospheres. Our understanding of atmospheric escape and chemistry, therefore, depends on our knowledge of the stellar UV fluxes. While the far-ultraviolet (FUV) fluxes can be observed for some stars, most of the EUV range is unobservable due to the lack of a space telescope with EUV capabilities and, for the more distant stars, due to interstellar medium absorption. Therefore, it becomes essential to have an indirect means for inferring EUV fluxes from features observable at other wavelengths. We present here analytic functions for predicting the EUV emission of F-, G-, K-, and M-type stars from the log R′HK activity parameter that is commonly obtained from ground-based optical observations of the Ca II H&K lines. The scaling relations are based on a collection of about 100 nearby stars with published log R′HK and EUV flux values, the latter of which are either direct measurements or inferences from high-quality FUV spectra. The scaling relations presented here return EUV flux values with an accuracy of about a factor of three, which is slightly lower than that of other similar methods based on FUV or X-ray measurements.

A molecular kinetic method is applied to simulate intermolecular collisions and thermal escape in single and multi-component Callisto-like atmospheres. The 1D atmospheres at noon and midnight are composed of radiolytically produced volatiles (CO2, O2, H2) which are assumed to permeate the regolith and thermally desorb. The escaping H2 is shown to have a critical effect on the atmosphere as it is the dominant collision partner, it cools the background gases producing non-isothermal profiles, and its diffusion through the O2 and CO2 affects the vertical structure. Therefore, at the densities inferred from observations, molecular collisions must be included when describing the structure of and escape from Callisto's atmosphere.

To bring our photochemical model of Pluto’s atmosphere and ionosphere ( Krasnopolsky, 2020 ) into agreement with the recent detection of 5 ​× ​1015 ​cm−2 methylacetylene C3H4 ( Steffl et al., 2020 ), rate coefficients of the three key reactions of C3H4 production and loss have been changed to values calculated by Vuitton et al. (2019) . This change reduces the abundance of cyanoacetylene HC3N close to the measured ALMA upper limit ( Lellouch et al., 2017 ), increases the model abundances of H2 and C3H8 by factors of 1.3, and reduces the abundances of H and C4H2 by factors of 1.3, while other species are changed less than 5% in the model. The predicted abundance of atomic hydrogen agrees with that derived from the observed Lyman-beta emission by Steffl et al. (2020) . The observed HC14N/HC15N ​> ​125 on Pluto ( Lellouch et al., 2017 ) looks puzzling compared to HC14N/HC15N ​= ​60 on Titan. Our analysis confirms the predissociation of N2 at 80–100 ​nm as the main process of nitrogen isotope fractionation. The observed twofold difference is partially caused by the diffusive depletion of the heavy isotope in HCN and in the predissociation of N2. On Pluto, the mean altitudes of HCN and predissociation of N2 are 500 and 860 ​km, well above the homopause at 96 ​km. On Titan, observations of HC14N/HC15N refer to 90–460 ​km ( Vinatier et al., 2007 ), the predissociation occurs near 985 ​km, both below the homopause at 1000 ​km, and diffusive depletion does not occur. Therefore the observed limit corresponds to 14N/15N ​> ​253 for N2 in the lower atmosphere and 14N/15N ​> ​228 in the upper layers of the N2 ice. These limits reflect the conditions on Pluto in the last two million years, which is the lifetime of N2 in Pluto’s atmosphere with the current N2 loss of 37.5 ​g ​cm−2 Byr−1 primarily for photodestruction. The calculated isotope fractionation factor of 1.96 accounts for the formation and condensation of nitriles, diffusive separation, and fractionation in thermal escape. Variations of 14N/15N in the N2 ice are related to the evolution of the solar EUV, mixing processes in the N2 ice, and possible periods of hydrodynamic escape, which are poorly known and not considered here.

We investigated the influence of thickness fluctuations on the carrier dynamics of CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots (QDs). The temperature dependence of both the red-shift in the band-edge transition energy and broadening of the emission line were evaluated using different models. We showed that the quantum confinement effect and thermal escape of the QDs can be extended to significantly higher temperatures. These results were confirmed by using the discrete recombination model to investigate localized and delocalized states. Taking place into the reducing fluctuations of QDs that the thermally activated transition energies and the carrier scattering via phonons are enhanced.

Understanding what processes govern atmospheric escape and the loss of planetary water is of paramount importance for understanding how life in the universe can exist. One mechanism thought to be important at all planets is an “ambipolar” electric field that helps ions overcome gravity. We report the discovery and first quantitative extraterrestrial measurements of such a field at the planet Venus. Unexpectedly, despite comparable gravity, we show the field to be five times stronger than in Earth's similar ionosphere. Contrary to our understanding, Venus would still lose heavy ions (including oxygen and all water-group species) to space, even if there were no stripping by the solar wind. We therefore find that it is possible for planets to lose heavy ions to space entirely through electric forces in their ionospheres and such an “electric wind” must be considered when studying the evolution and potential habitability of any planet in any star system.

Rapid escape from a proposed early CH 4 /NH 3 atmosphere on Titan could, in principle, limit the amount of NH 3 that is converted by photolysis into the present N 2 atmosphere. Assuming that this conversion occurred, a recent estimate of escape driven by the surface temperature and pressure was used to constrain Titan's accretion temperature. Here we show that for the range of temperatures of interest, heating of the surface is not the primary driver for escape. Atmospheric loss from a thick Titan atmosphere is predominantly driven by heating of the upper atmosphere; therefore, the loss rate cannot be used to easily constrain the accretion temperature. We give an estimate of the solar driven escape rate from an early atmosphere on Titan, and then briefly discuss its relevance to the cooling rate, isotope ratios, and the time period suggested to convert NH 3 to the present N 2 atmosphere.

The influence of the hydrogen hydrodynamic upper atmosphere escape, driven by the solar soft X-ray and extreme ultraviolet radiation (XUV) flux, on an expected magma ocean outgassed steam atmosphere of early Venus is studied. By assuming that the young Sun was either a weak or moderate active young G star, we estimated the water loss from a hydrogen dominated thermosphere due to the absorption of the solar XUV flux and the precipitation of solar wind produced energetic hydrogen atoms (ENAs). The production of ENAs and their interaction with the hydrodynamic extended upper atmosphere, including collision-related feedback processes, have been calculated by means of Monte Carlo models. ENAs that collide in the upper atmosphere deposit their energy and heat the surrounding gas mainly above the main XUV energy deposition layer. It is shown that precipitating ENAs modify the thermal structure of the upper atmosphere, but the enhancement of the thermal escape rates caused by these energetic hydrogen atoms is negligible. Our results also indicate that the majority of oxygen arising from dissociated H$_2$O molecules is left behind during the first 100 Myr. It is thus suggested that the main part of the remaining oxygen has been absorbed by crustal oxidation.

We investigate the effect of a single large impact either during the Late Veneer or Late Heavy Bombardment on the evolution of the mantle and atmosphere of Venus. We use a coupled interior/exterior numerical code based on StagYY developed in Gillmann and Tackley (Gillmann, C., Tackley, P.J. [2014]. J. Geophys. Res. 119, 1189–1217). Single vertical impacts are simulated as instantaneous events affecting both the atmosphere and mantle of the planet by (i) eroding the atmosphere, causing atmospheric escape and (ii) depositing energy in the crust and mantle of the planet. The main impactor parameters include timing, size/mass, velocity and efficiency of energy deposition. We observe that impact erosion of the atmosphere is a minor effect compared to melting and degassing triggered by energy deposition in the mantle and crust. We are able to produce viable pathways that are consistent with present-day Venus, especially considering large Late Veneer Impacts. Small collisions (

The Mars Exospheric Neutral Composition Analyser (MENCA) aboard the Indian Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) is a quadrupole mass spectrometer which provides in situ measurement of the composition of the low-latitude Martian neutral exosphere. The altitude profiles of the three major constituents, i.e., amu 44 (CO2), amu 28 (N2 + CO), and amu 16 (O) in the Martian exosphere during evening (close to sunset terminator) hours are reported using MENCA observations from four orbits of MOM during late December 2014, when MOM's periapsis altitude was the lowest. The altitude range of the observation encompasses the diffusively separated region much above the well-mixed atmosphere. The transition from CO2 to O-dominated region is observed near 270 km. The mean exospheric temperature derived using these three mass numbers is 271 ± 5 K. These first observations corresponding to the Martian evening hours would help to provide constraints to the thermal escape models.

International audience; We present initial Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) observations and preliminary interpretation of bulk plasma loss from Mars. MAVEN particle and field measurements show that planetary heavy ions derived from the Martian atmosphere can escape in the form of discrete coherent structures or "clouds." The ions in these clouds are unmagnetized or weakly magnetized, have velocities well above the escape speed, and lie directly downstream from magnetic field amplifications, suggesting a "snowplow" effect. This postulated escape process, similar to that successfully used to explain the dynamics of active gas releases in the solar wind and terrestrial magnetosheath, relies on momentum transfer from the shocked solar wind protons to the planetary heavy ions, with the electrons and magnetic field acting as intermediaries. Fluxes of planetary ions on the order of 107 cm-2 s-1 can escape by this process, and if it operates regularly, it could contribute 10-20% of the current ion escape from Mars.

Moreover, the Hesperian outflow channels suggest a large total volume of water (e.g., Carr and Head, 2015). The current reservoir of surface water occurs mainly as polar layered deposits (PLD), although the total volume of this reservoir is significantly smaller than the estimated volume of the Paleo-oceans (e.g., Kurokawa et al., 2014). An increasing amount of evidence obtained by the Mars Odyssey Gamma Ray Spectrometer (Boynton et al., 2002, 2007) and the Mars Express radar sounder (Mouginot et al., 2012) suggests the presence of additional reservoirs of water in the form of ground ice at middle to high latitudes. The presence of recurring slope lineae (McEwen et al., 2014) in a wide range of regions including low-latitudes implies that water exchange is ongoing between the atmosphere and the underground cryosphere. Interactive evolution of multiple water-ice reservoirs on Mars: Insights from hydrogen isotope compositions

Semiconductor quantum dots have become potential candidate for application in LEDs, diode lasers, solar cells and biological labelling. Basic understanding of their photo physical processes affecting their optical transition characteristics is required for their efficient use in different applications. We report here role of phonons and defect/trap states on the photoluminescence intensity inferred from temperature dependence of integrated intensity of main excitonic peak in the temperature range 30-300 K. Clear demarcation of two photoluminescence quenching processes operative in low and high temperature regions has been observed. We find the thermal activation energy of the trap states to be ∼ 7 meV for main excitonic emission peak and ∼ 10.5 meV for deep trap emission. Thermal escape is assisted by three phonons inferred from both emission peak analysis.

We present Mars' electron temperature (Te) and density (ne) altitude profiles derived from the MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN) mission deep dip orbits in April 2015, as measured by the Langmuir probe instrument. These orbits had periapsides below 130 km in altitude at low solar zenith angles. The periapsides were above the peak in ne during this period. Using a Chapman function fit, we find that scale height and projected altitude of the ne peak are consistent with models and previous measurements. The peak electron density is slightly higher than earlier works. For the first time, we present in situ measurements of Te altitude profiles in Mars' dayside in the altitude range from ~130 km to 500 km and provide a functional fit. Importantly, Te rises rapidly with altitude from ~180 km to ~300 km. These results and functional fit are important for modeling Mars' ionosphere and understanding atmospheric escape.

The MAVEN Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) instrument is designed to measure the energetic charged particle input to the Martian atmosphere. SEP consists of two sensors mounted on corners of the spacecraft deck, each utilizing a dual, double-ended solid-state detector telescope architecture to separately measure fluxes of electrons from 20 to 1000 keV and ions from 20–6000 keV, in four orthogonal look directions, each with a field of view of $42^{\circ}$ by $31^{\circ}$ . SEP, along with the rest of the MAVEN instrument suite, allows the effects of high energy solar particle events on Mars’ upper atmospheric structure, temperatures, dynamics and atmospheric escape rates, to be quantified and understood. Given that solar activity was likely substantially higher in the early solar system, understanding the relationship between energetic particle input and atmospheric loss today will enable more confident estimates of total atmospheric loss over Mars’ history.

We report on the complex nature of the induced Martian magnetotail using simultaneous magnetic field and plasma measurements from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft. Two case studies are analyzed from which we identify (1) repetitive loading and unloading of tail magnetic flux as the field magnitude changes dramatically, exhibiting signatures similar to substorm activity within intrinsic magnetospheres; (2) multiple current sheet crossings indicative of plasma sheet flapping; (3) tailward flowing high-energy planetary ions (O+ and O2+), confined exclusively to the cross-tail current sheet, contributing to atmospheric escape; and (4) signatures of magnetic flux ropes, suggesting the occurrence of tail reconnection. These events illustrate the complexity of the Martian magnetotail as MAVEN provides key observations relevant to the unanswered questions of induced magnetosphere dynamics.

The room-temperature and temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectra from as-grown and annealed porous polysilicon in the pure oxygen atmosphere have been measured and analyzed. The energy of blue emissions (B band) is independent on the measurement temperature, however; the intensity of the B band is decreased with the increasing measurement temperature. With the increasing measurement temperature, the band gap emissions of as-grown and annealed porous polysilicon at 300 °C show redshift. From the evolution of intensity with the measurement temperature, there are two different non-radiative recombination processes. At the low temperature range between 11 K to 80 K, the thermal quenching behaviors are due to the influence of the surface states. At the higher temperature range (from 80 K to 300 K), however, nonradiative recombination processes can be attributed to the thermal escape. We believe that the understanding of the defects is very beneficial for the application of the porous polysilicon in the optoelectronic device field.

We obtained spectra of the pre-main sequence star AU Microscopii during a transit of its Neptune-sized planet to investigate its orbit and atmosphere. We used the high-dispersion near-infrared spectrograph IRD on the Subaru telescope to detect the Doppler "shadow" from the planet and constrain the projected stellar obliquity. Modeling of the observed planetary Doppler shadow suggests a spin-orbit alignment of the system ($\lambda=-4.7_{-6.4}^{+6.8}$ degrees), but additional observations are needed to confirm this finding. We use both the IRD data and spectra obtained with NIRSPEC on Keck-II to search for absorption in the 1083 nm line of metastable triplet He I by the planet's atmosphere and place an upper limit for the equivalent width of 3.7 m\AA at 99 $\%$ confidence. Aims: We aim at constraining the conditions of the wind and high-energy emission of the host star reproducing the non-detection of Ly$\alpha$ planetary absorption. Methods: We model the escaping planetary atmosphere, the stellar wind, and their interaction employing a multi-fluid, three-dimensional hydrodynamic code. We assume a planetary atmosphere composed of hydrogen and helium. We run models varying the stellar high-energy emission and stellar mass-loss rate, further computing for each case the Ly$\alpha$ synthetic planetary atmospheric absorption and comparing it with the observations. Results: We find that a non-detection of Ly$\alpha$ in absorption employing the stellar high-energy emission estimated from far-ultraviolet and X-ray data requires a stellar wind with a stellar mass-loss rate about six times lower than solar. This result is a consequence of the fact that, for $\pi$ Men c, detectable Ly$\alpha$ absorption can be caused exclusively by energetic neutral atoms, which become more abundant with increasing the velocity and/or the density of the stellar wind. By considering, instead, that the star has a solar-like wind, the non-detection requires a stellar ionising radiation about four times higher than estimated. This is because, despite the fact that a stronger stellar high-energy emission ionises hydrogen more rapidly, it also increases the upper atmosphere heating and expansion, pushing the interaction region with the stellar wind farther away from the planet, where the planet atmospheric density that remains neutral becomes smaller and the production of energetic neutral atoms less efficient. Conclusions: Comparing the results of our grid of models with what is expected and estimated for the stellar wind and high-energy emission, respectively, we support the idea that the atmosphere of $\pi$ Men c is likely not hydrogen-dominated., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. The effect that barrier material has on the temperature dependence of photoluminescence of InAs/AlGaInAs/InP quantum dots in the telecom C-band (∼1550 nm) is reported. Increasing Al content in the barrier material, (AlxGa1-x)0.53In0.47As, creates less temperature sensitivity and enhances the high temperature relative quantum yield. Three samples, with x = 0.51, 0.75, and 1, have room temperature relative quantum yield values of 2.0%, 3.7%, and 41.0%, respectively, when compared to low temperature values. Determination of thermal activation energies shows that the loss of relative quantum yield is due to thermal escape of holes from the quantum dots to the barrier. More aluminum-rich barriers require higher temperatures to depopulate the ground state of the quantum dots, which leads to better high temperature emission. These results can guide future designs of telecom C-band quantum dot devices.

Recent exoplanet observations reported a large number of multiple-planet systems, in which some of the planets are in a chain of resonances. The fraction of resonant systems to non-resonant systems provides clues about their formation history. We investigated the orbital stability of planets in resonant chains by considering the long-term evolution of planetary mass and stellar mass and using orbital calculations. We found that while resonant chains were stable, they can be destabilized by a change of $\sim$10% in planetary mass. Such a mass evolution can occur by atmospheric escape due to photoevaporation. We also found that resonant chains can be broken by a stellar mass loss of $\lesssim1$%, which would be explained by stellar winds or coronal mass ejections. We investigate the influence of the ZnTe separation layer thickness on the photoluminescence (PL) dynamics of CdTe/ZnTe double quantum dots (DQDs) on Si substrates. The results clarify that the DQD's structure effectively improves the limit of the carrier collection and the thermal stability of the corresponding single-layer QDs. The unusual temperature-dependent PL is explained using the single model for thermal redistribution of carrier states. This model indicates that the main nonradiative process at high temperatures is caused by scattering via multiphonons with longitudinal optical phonon energy of about 19–21.3 meV. The confinement-induced mixing and electron-carrier coupling effects cause blue-shift and enhanced PL intensity. We propose that the separation layer controls carrier dynamics in optoelectronic devices by modulating the thermal escape and e-h pairs in the intermixing layers.

If the protoplanets grew to a certain mass (i.e. > 0.5 MEarth), they could have captured H2-dominated primordial atmospheres by accreting gas from the circumstellar disk during the formation of the Solar System, which were then quickly lost by hydrodynamic escape after the disk dissipated. In such a case, the EUV-driven hydrodynamic flow of H atoms dragged heavier elements with it at different rates, leading to changes in their initial isotope ratios. For reproducing Earth and Venus present atmospheric 36Ar/38Ar, 20Ne/22Ne, 36Ar/22Ne, isotope and bulk K/U ratios we applied hydrodynamic upper atmosphere escape and Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) impact models for the loss calculations of captured H2-dominated primordial atmospheres for various protoplanetary masses. We investigated a wide range of possible EUV evolution tracks of the young Sun and initial atmospheric compositions based on mixtures of captured nebula gas, outgassed and delivered material from ureilite, enstatite and carbonaceaous chondrites. Depending on the disk lifetime of ≈ 3–5 Myr (Bollard et al., 2017; Wang et al., 2017) and the composition of accreted material after disk dispersal, we find from the reproduction of the present atmospheric Ar, Ne, and bulk K/U ratios, that early Earth's evolution can be explained if proto-Earth had accreted masses between ≈ 0.53 − 0.58 MEarth by the time the nebula gas dissipated. If proto-Earth would have accreted a higher mass during the disk lifetime the present atmospheric Ar and Ne isotope ratios can not be reproduced with our model approach. For masses > 0.75 MEarth, Earth would have had a problem to get get rid of its primordial atmosphere. If proto-Earth accreted ≈ 0.53 − 0.58MEarth of enstatite-dominated material as suggested by Dauphas (2017) during the disk lifetime, it would have captured a tiny primordial atmosphere that was lost ≈ 3 Myr after the disk dissipated. In such a case we find that the present-day atmospheric Ar and Ne isotope ratios can be best reproduced if the post-nebula impactors contained ≈ 5% weakly depleted carbonaceous chondritic material and ≈ 95% enstatite chondrites that are strongly depleted in Ar, Ne and moderately volatile elements like potassium. If higher amounts of carbonaceous chondrites were involved in early Earth's accretion as recently suggested by Schiller et al. (2018), then the Earth's present atmospheric Ar and Ne ratios can only be reproduced if the involved carbonaceous chondritic post-nebula material was also highly depleted in these noble gases and/or had to be partially be delivered as long as the primordial atmosphere was yet escaping. As long as primordial atmospheres surround the growing protoplanets the abundance of their volatile elements is overwritten by their respective captured solar-like atmospheric abundances. Therefore the initial composition of the protoplanets at the disk dispersal time can not be identified by our method. For masses < 0.5 MEarth atmospheric escape cannot explain the present-day ratios, i.e. if Earth grew slower then these ratios have to be explained differently (Marty, 2012). If proto-Venus captured a primordial atmosphere it should have grown to masses of ≈ 0.85− 1.0 MVenus during the time until the disk dissipated and if early Venus accreted its main mass during the disk lifetime than the present atmospheric Ar and Ne isotope ratios and the observed K/U ratios on Venus surface can also be reproduced by the escape of a captured primordial atmosphere that is lost within ≤ 100 Myr, if the Sun was born as a weakly to moderately active young G star. New precise re-measurements of atmospheric noble gases are necessary by future Venus missions to better constrain the material that was involved in the planet's accretion history and possibly also the EUV activity evolution of the young Sun. In addition, measurements of other moderately volatile element and isotope ratios on the surface such as Rb/U, 64Zn/66Zn, and 39K/41K can give an insight on whether Venus accreted slow or fast, i.e. almost to its final mass within the disk lifetime.

Atmospheric escape from close-in Neptunes and hot Jupiters around sun-like stars driven by extreme ultraviolet (EUV) irradiation plays an important role in the evolution of exo-planets and in shaping their ensemble properties. Intermediate and low mass stars are brightest at EUV wavelengths at the very end of their lives, after they have expelled their envelopes and evolved into hot white dwarfs. Yet the effect of the intense EUV irradiation of giant planets orbiting young white dwarfs has not been assessed. We show that the giant planets in the solar system will experience significant hydrodynamic escape caused by the EUV irradiation from the white dwarf left behind by the Sun. A fraction of the evaporated volatiles will be accreted by the solar white dwarf, resulting in detectable photospheric absorption lines. As a large number of the currently known extra-solar giant planets will survive the metamorphosis of their host stars into white dwarfs, observational signatures of accretion from evaporating planetary atmospheres are expected to be common. In fact, one third of the known hot single white dwarfs show photospheric absorption lines of volatile elements, which we argue are indicative of ongoing accretion from evaporating planets. The fraction of volatile contaminated hot white dwarfs strongly decreases as they cool. We show that accretion from evaporating planetary atmospheres naturally explains this temperature dependence if more than 50 per cent of hot white dwarfs still host giant planets., ApJL in press

The atmospheres of the terrestrial planets are known to have been modified as a consequence of the impact degassing and atmospheric erosion during the late accretion. Despite the commonality of these processes, there are distinct gaps -- roughly two orders of magnitude -- between the abundances of noble gases and nitrogen in the present-day atmospheres on Venus, Earth, and Mars. The element partitioning on planetary surfaces is thought to be significantly different between the three planets ~4 Ga: the runaway greenhouse on Venus, the carbon-silicate cycle and ocean formation on Earth, and the CO2-ice and H2O-ice formation on Mars. Consequences of element partitioning for the atmospheric evolution during the late accretion onto Venus, Earth, and Mars are investigated with a numerical model. We set upper limits to the partial pressures of CO2 and H2O on Earth and Mars, which corresponds to the state of phase equilibrium and carbon-silicate cycle. The final N2 mass shrinks by ~40% and ~15% for Earth and Mars, respectively. The effect of element partitioning is found to be insufficient to reproduce the gaps. For Venus, the survival of the primordial atmosphere through the late accretion may partially account for the present-day atmosphere. We use the critical step model to study the major transitions in evolution on Earth. We find that a total of five steps represents the most plausible estimate, in agreement with previous studies, and use the fossil record to identify the potential candidates. We apply the model to Earth-analogs around stars of different masses by incorporating the constraints on habitability set by stellar physics including the habitable zone lifetime, availability of ultraviolet radiation for prebiotic chemistry, and atmospheric escape. The critical step model suggests that the habitability of Earth-analogs around M-dwarfs is significantly suppressed. The total number of stars with planets containing detectable biosignatures of microbial life is expected to be highest for K-dwarfs. In contrast, we find that the corresponding value for intelligent life (technosignatures) should be highest for solar-mass stars. We analyze the interiors of HD~219134~b and c, which are among the coolest super Earths detected thus far. Without using spectroscopic measurements, we aim at constraining if the possible atmospheres are hydrogen-rich or hydrogen-poor. In a first step, we employ a full probabilistic Bayesian inference analysis in order to rigorously quantify the degeneracy of interior parameters given the data of mass, radius, refractory element abundances, semi-major axes, and stellar irradiation. We obtain constraints on structure and composition for core, mantle, ice layer, and atmosphere. In a second step, we aim to draw conclusions on the nature of possible atmospheres by considering atmospheric escape. Specifically, we compare the actual possible atmospheres to a threshold thickness above which a primordial (H$_2$-dominated) atmosphere can be retained against evaporation over the planet's lifetime. The best constrained parameters are the individual layer thicknesses. The maximum radius fraction of possible atmospheres are 0.18 and 0.13 $R$ (radius), for planets b and c, respectively. These values are significantly smaller than the threshold thicknesses of primordial atmospheres: 0.28 and 0.19 $R$, respectively. Thus, the possible atmospheres of planets b and c are unlikely to be H$_2$-dominated. However, whether possible volatile layers are made of gas or liquid/solid water cannot be uniquely determined. Our main conclusions are: (1) the possible atmospheres for planets b and c are enriched and thus possibly secondary in nature, and (2) both planets may contain a gas layer, whereas the layer of HD 219134 b must be larger. Hot gas giant exoplanets can lose part of their atmosphere due to strong stellar irradiation, and these losses can affect their physical and chemical evolution. Studies of atmospheric escape from exoplanets have mostly relied on space-based observations of the hydrogen Lyman-a line in the far ultraviolet region, which is strongly affected by interstellar absorption. Using ground-based high-resolution spectroscopy, we detected excess absorption in the helium triplet at 1083 nanometers during the transit of the Saturn-mass exoplanet WASP-69b, at a signal-to-noise ratio of 18. We measured line blueshifts of several kilometers per second and posttransit absorption, which we interpret as the escape of part of the atmosphere trailing behind the planet in comet-like form.© 2018 American Association for the Advancement of Science. Observations of transiting extra-solar planets provide rich sources of data for probing the in-system environment. In the WASP-12 system, a broad depression in the usually-bright MgII h&k lines has been observed, in addition to atmospheric escape from the extremely hot Jupiter WASP-12b. It has been hypothesized that a translucent circumstellar cloud is formed by the outflow from the planet, causing the observed signatures. We perform 3D hydrodynamic simulations of the full system environment of WASP-12, injecting a planetary wind and stellar wind from their respective surfaces. We find that a torus of density high enough to account for the lack of MgII h&k line core emission in WASP-12 can be formed in approximately 13 years. We also perform synthetic observations of the Lyman-alpha spectrum at different points in the planet's orbit, which demonstrate that significant absorption occurs at all points in the orbit, not just during transits, as suggested by the observations.

There is growing observational and theoretical evidence suggesting that atmospheric escape is a key driver of planetary evolution. Commonly, planetary evolution models employ simple analytic formulae (e.g., energy limited escape) that are often inaccurate, and more detailed physical models of atmospheric loss usually only give snapshots of an atmosphere's structure and are difficult to use for evolutionary studies. To overcome this problem, we upgrade and employ an already existing upper atmosphere hydrodynamic code to produce a large grid of about 7000 models covering planets with masses 1 - 39 Earth mass with hydrogen-dominated atmospheres and orbiting late-type stars. The modeled planets have equilibrium temperatures ranging between 300 and 2000 K. For each considered stellar mass, we account for three different values of the high-energy stellar flux (i.e., low, moderate, and high activity). For each computed model, we derive the atmospheric temperature, number density, bulk velocity, X-ray and EUV (XUV) volume heating rates, and abundance of the considered species as a function of distance from the planetary center. From these quantities, we estimate the positions of the maximum dissociation and ionisation, the mass-loss rate, and the effective radius of the XUV absorption. We show that our results are in good agreement with previously published studies employing similar codes. We further present an interpolation routine capable to extract the modelling output parameters for any planet lying within the grid boundaries. We use the grid to identify the connection between the system parameters and the resulting atmospheric properties. We finally apply the grid and the interpolation routine to estimate atmospheric evolutionary tracks for the close-in, high-density planets CoRoT-7 b and HD219134 b,c..., Comment: 21 pages, 4 Tables, 15 Figures

The presence or absence of a magnetic field determines the nature of how a planet interacts with the solar wind and what paths are available for atmospheric escape. Magnetospheres form both around magnetised planets, such as Earth, and unmagnetised planets, like Mars and Venus, but it has been suggested that magnetised planets are better protected against atmospheric loss. However, the observed mass escape rates from these three planets are similar (in the approximate (0.5–2) kg s−1 range), putting this latter hypothesis into question. Modelling the effects of a planetary magnetic field on the major atmospheric escape processes, we show that the escape rate can be higher for magnetised planets over a wide range of magnetisations due to escape of ions through the polar caps and cusps. Therefore, contrary to what has previously been believed, magnetisation is not a sufficient condition for protecting a planet from atmospheric loss. Estimates of the atmospheric escape rates from exoplanets must therefore address all escape processes and their dependence on the planet’s magnetisation.

International audience; Cold ion outflow is one of the candidate processes to cause significant atmospheric escape from Mars. We here report on the cold dense heavy ion outflow event observed in Martian-induced magnetotail by Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) on 4 December 2014. In the outflow event, the cold dense heavy ion outflow was observed only in south dusk downward convection electric field (E) lobe. During the event, the strong crustal magnetic field was located on dayside of Mars. It suggests that combination of minimagnetosphere and downward E facilitates the cold dense heavy ion outflow. In order to estimate the CO2+ density, we adopted a fitting method of log-normal distribution to the O2+ time of flight distributions to eliminate O2+ contamination in the CO2+ time of flight data. Contribution of O2+, O+, and CO2+ to the total heavy ions ( 134 cm-3) is about 71%, 26%, and 3%, respectively. Average heavy ion flux was 5.4 × 107 cm-2s-1, assuming the escape velocity at 2,000-km altitude.

Without the shielding of a substantial intrinsic dipole magnetic field, the atmospheres of Mars and Venus are particularly susceptible to similar atmospheric ion energization and scavenging processes. However, each planet has different attributes and external conditions controlling its high altitude planetary ion spatial and energy distributions. This paper describes analogous test particle simulations in background MHD fields that allow us to compare the properties and fates, precipitation or escape, of the mainly O+ atmospheric pick-up ions at Mars and Venus. The goal is to illustrate how atmospheric and planetary scales affect the upper atmospheres and space environments of our terrestrial planet neighbors. The results show the expected convection electric field-related hemispheric asymmetries in both precipitation and escape, where the degree of asymmetry at each planet is determined by the planetary scale and local interplanetary field strength. At Venus, the kinetic treatment of O+ reveals a strong nightside source of precipitation while Mars' crustal fields complicate the simple asymmetry in ion precipitation and drive a dayside source of precipitation. The pickup O+ escape pattern at both Venus and Mars exhibits low energy tailward escape, but Mars exhibits a prominent, high energy ‘polar plume’ feature in the hemisphere of the upward convection electric field while the Venus ion wake shows only a modest poleward concentration. The overall escape is larger at Venus than Mars ( 2.1 × 10 25 and 4.3 × 10 24 at solar maximum, respectively), but the efficiency (likelihood) of O+ escaping is 2–3 times higher at Mars. The consequences of these comparisons for pickup ion related atmospheric energy deposition, loss rates, and detection on spacecraft including PVO, VEX, MEX and MAVEN are considered. In particular, both O+ precipitation and escape show electric field controlled asymmetries that grow with energy, while the O+ fluxes and energy spectra at selected spatial locations show characteristic signatures of the pickup related acceleration and precipitation.

The Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) monitor is an instrument on the NASA Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission, designed to measure the variability of the solar soft x-rays and EUV irradiance at Mars. The solar output in this wavelength range is a primary energy input to the Mars atmosphere and a driver for the processes leading to atmospheric escape. The MAVEN EUV monitor consists of three broadband radiometers. The radiometers consist of silicon photodiodes with different bandpass-limiting filters for each channel. The filters for the radiometers are: Channel A: thin foil C/Al/Nb/C for 0.1–3 nm and 17–22 nm, Channel B: thin foil C/Al/Ti/C for 0.1–7 nm, and Channel C: interference filter for 121–122 nm. A fourth, covered photodiode is used to monitor variations in dark signal due to temperature and radiation background changes. The three science channels will monitor emissions from the highly variable corona and transition region of the solar atmosphere. The EUV monitor is mounted on the top deck of the MAVEN spacecraft and is pointed at the Sun for most of its orbit around Mars. The measurement cadence is 1-second. The broadband irradiances can be used to monitor the most rapid changes in solar irradiance due to flares. In combination with time-interpolated observations at Earth of slower varying solar spectral emissions, the broadband MAVEN EUV monitor measurements will also be used in a spectral irradiance model to generate the full EUV spectrum at Mars from 0 to 190 nm in 1-nm bins on a time cadence of 1-minute and daily averages.

More than 7 years of ion flux measurements in the energy range 10 eV–15 keV have allowed the ASPERA-3/IMA (Analyzer of Space Plasmas and Energetic Ions/Ion Mass Analyzer) instrument on Mars Express to collect a large database of ion measurements in the Mars environment, over a wide range of upstream solar wind (density and velocity) and radiation (solar EUV intensity) conditions. We investigate the influence of these parameters on the Martian atmospheric ion escape rate by integrating IMA heavy ion flux measurements taken in the Martian tail at similar (binned) solar wind density (nsw), velocity (vsw), and solar EUV intensity (IEUV) conditions. For the same solar wind velocity and EUV intensity ranges (vsw and Is constrained), we find a statistically significant decrease of up to a factor of 3 in the atmospheric ion escape rate with increased average solar wind density (5.6 × 1024s−1 to 1.9 × 1024s−1 for 0.4 cm−3 and 1.4 cm−3, respectively). For low solar wind density (0.1–0.5 cm−3) and low EUV intensity, the escape rate increases with increasing solar wind velocity from 2.4 × 1024s−1 to 5.6 × 1024s−1. During high solar EUV intensities the escape fluxes are highly variable, leading to large uncertainties in the estimated escape rates; however, a statistically significant increase in the escape rate is found between low/high EUV for similar solar wind conditions. Empirical-analytical models for atmospheric escape are developed by fitting calculated escape rates to all sufficiently sampled upstream conditions.

It has been known for decades that atmospheric escape is important for the evolution of terrestrial planets in the Solar System, although exactly how atmospheric escape changes the atmospheres of these bodies is still hotly debated. Rapidly increasing numbers of exoplanet observations provide new targets against which atmospheric escape models are tested. In this review we summarize recent studies related to atmospheric escape from exoplanets. The most important conclusions are that (a) escape can significantly influence the volatile contents of low-mass exoplanets (with mass lower than those of Uranus and Neptune) and the atmosphere and climate evolution histories of Solar System terrestrial planets; (b) models including detailed physics and chemistry in planetary upper atmospheres will be important for the interpretation of existing and future observations of exoplanets; and (c) fluid models considering 2D or 3D planetary upper atmospheres and particle models for planetary exospheres will be important not only for comparisons with observations but also for order of magnitude estimates of atmospheric escape rates. Our understanding of how escape shapes planetary atmospheres and influences the climate of low-mass planets can be expected to advance substantially in the coming decade.

We present Venus Express observations of the impact of a slow interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME), which struck Venus on 23 December 2006, creating unusual quasi steady state upstream conditions for the 2 h close to periapsis: an enhanced (∼ nT) interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), radially aligned with the Sun-Venus line; and a dense (∼ cm−3) solar wind. Contrary to our current understanding and expectations, the ionosphere became partially demagnetized. We also find evidence for shocked sheathlike solar wind protons and electrons in the wake of Venus, and powerful (≈ nT2/Hz) foreshock whistler mode waves radiating from the bow shock at an unexpectedly low frequency (0.6 Hz). Given the abnormally high density of escaping heavy ions at the magnetopause boundary (295 cm−3, one of the highest of the whole mission) and the enhanced density of escaping heavy ions in the wake, we find that even weak ICMEs with no driving shocks can increase atmospheric loss rates at Venus and suggests that the Bx component of the IMF may be a factor in atmospheric escape rates.

Current prototypes of quantum-dot intermediate band solar cells suffer from voltage reduction due to the existence of thermal carrier escape. An enlarged subbandgap ${E_L}$ would not only minimize this problem but would lead to a bandgap distribution that exploits more efficiently the solar spectrum. In this study, we demonstrate InAs/InGaP QD-IBSC prototypes with the following bandgap distribution: ${E_G=}$ 1.88 eV, $E_H= 1.26\; {\bf eV}$ , and ${E_L >}$ 0.4 eV. We have measured, for the first time in this material, both the interband and intraband transitions by means of photocurrent experiments. The activation energy of the carrier thermal escape in our devices has also been measured. It is found that its value, compared with InAs/GaAs-based prototypes, does not follow the increase in ${E_L}$ . The benefits of using thin-AlGaAs barriers before and after the quantum-dot layers are analyzed.

The upper atmosphere of Mars is a laboratory for better understanding the planetary atmosphere evolution, and is an example of the interaction of the solar wind with an unmagnetized planet that has only patches of crustal magnetic field. In that context, several space missions were launched to study the Martian environment and its aurorae, notably ESA's Mars Express discovered the first aurora-like structures, and more recently NASA's MAVEN, which is dedicated to understand the atmospheric escape. However, none of the existing missions have spectrometers in the visible spectral range for the observation of the upper atmosphere and the aurorae, but there are UV spectrometer which can be used to infer visible aurora emission. The UV aurorae on Mars have a counterpart in the visible spectral range which should be detectable under the right conditions. We discuss what are the most favorable conditions to observe these aurorae discernible with the naked eye. In this paper, we simulate the Martian aurora in the visible spectral range both with an experimental setup (the Planeterrella, which we use to measure intensity with respect to the naked eye) and with a numerical ionosphere simulation model (Trans⁎/Aeroplanets). We show that the electron impact on CO2 produces strong emissions at 412 nm and 434 nm, i.e., in the blue part of the visible spectrum which are due to the CO2+(A) Fox–Duffendack–Barker bands. The modeling of the electron transport at Mars shows that these blue emissions as well as the emissions of the 630 nm (red) and 557.7 nm (green) lines of atomic oxygen may be observable several times during a solar cycle during strong solar events. The absence of visible spectrometers dedicated to these observations onboard existing space missions and the location of the different Martian rovers, far from the vertically aligned crustal magnetic field lines of Mars, have prevented so far the observations of such an aurora. In the foreseeable future, two missions may help observing these aurorae: the exo-Mars/Trace Gas Orbiter mission will carry a visible spectrometer which could be used to detect these events in the visible spectral range. NOMAD (Nadir and Occultation for Mars Discovery) will carry a UV-visible spectrometer in the 200–650 nm range.
