Dubininia africana Gaud, 1980 (Figs. 10, 12 E���H) Dubininia africana Gaud 1980: 10 ���13, figs. 1a���c; Gaud and Atyeo 1981a: 68. Material examined. 1 male (AMU01759) from Poicephalus rufiventris (Ruppell) (Psittacidae) (UMB 1638), East Africa, no other data; 1 male (AMU01760) from P. cryptoxanthus (Peters) (Psittacidae) (UMB 16235), Tanzania, Mbinga District, Matengo Highlands, Ugano, 1 April 1936, coll. unknown. Dubininia africana was recorded by Gaud (1980) from various parrots in Africa: Poicephalus senegalus (Linnaeus) (type host) in Cameroon, P. gulielmi (Jardine) and P. rufiventris (Ruppell) in Kenia, P. robustus (Gmelin) in Zaire, Psittacus erythacus Linnaeus (Psittacidae) in Cameroon, and Agapornis pullarius (Linnaeus) (Psittaculidae) in Cameroon and Zaire. Associations of this mite with the two latter hosts look questionable and most probably these records were the results of contamination, since Gaud collected this material from museum skins. Materials of Gaud were not available for our study. Male lectotype, 2 female paralectotypes (MNHN 30 F7) from Lorius domicella (Linnaeus) (Psittaculidae), Indonesia, Moluccas, no other data (lectotype and paralectotypes designated here); 2 males (AMNH 617962, YSU 2280), same host and location, Ceram 19 July, 1911, E. Streseman; 1 male, 1 female (AMNH 617967, YSU 2278), same host and location, Amboina, 3 April 1906, H. K��hn. 1 male (AMNH 618009, YSU 2292) from Lorius garrulus flavopalliatus Salvadori (Psittaculidae), Indonesia, Moluccas, Obi Island, September 1897, W. Doherty. 1 male (AMU01761) from Lorius garrulus (Linnaeus) (Psittaculidae) (UMB1732), no other collection data. Description. Male (lectotype). Idiosoma, length �� width, 310 �� 220, length of hysterosoma 210. Prodorsal shield shaped as narrow trapezium, with a pair of median ridges, posterior margin straight, with short truncate median extension, length along midline 73, greatest width 70 (Fig. 17 A). Scapular setae se, si situated in posterolateral angles of the shield, bases of setae se separated by 55. Hysteronotal shield completely fused with humeral shields, anterior margin convex, greatest length from anterior margin to level of setae h3 235, surface with poorly expressed striated patches mesal to area of humeral shields (striation indistinct in several non-type specimens). Setae c2 situated on hysteronotal shield near its anterior margin. Outer margins of opisthosoma slightly convex, width of opisthosoma at level of setae f2 95. Opisthosomal lobes long and almost straight; terminal cleft semi-circular, with strongly divergent margins at lobar apices; interlobar septa extending to level of setae e2; length of cleft from anterior end to bases of h3 40, length of cleft including septa 95. Interlobar membrane welldeveloped, incision in this membrane triangular, 52 long; terminal extensions of interlobar membrane acute, length of these extension from bases of setae h3 to tips 32. Lateral membranes with smooth lateral margins and acute posterior extensions (Fig. 17 B). Setae d2 extending to anterior end of terminal cleft; setae e2 (broken in lectotype) extending to lobar apices (in additional specimens). Setae h2, h3, f2 situated on lobar apices, their bases arranged in slightly oblique row, setae ps1 situated at level of setae f2. Setae f2 lanceolate, 70 long, 10 wide, extending beyond apices of tarsi IV. Setae ps2 situated on lateral margins of terminal extensions of interlobar membrane. Distance between dorsal setae: c2:d2 50, d2:e2 64, e2:h3 100, h2:h2 80, h3: h3 68, ps1:ps1 44, ps1:h3 7, h3:ps2 17. Epimerites I fused as a Y, sternum about 1/4 the total length of epimerites, area between anterior parts not sclerotized (Fig. 17 B). Rudimentary sclerites of epimerites IIa present. Epimerites IIIa long, with wide sclerotized area. Coxal fields IV open. Genital apparatus enlarged basally 22 �� 12; paragenital apodemes present, fused at anterior ends into horseshoe-shaped sclerite; genital shield absent, setae g on soft tegument. Adanal shield entire, bow-shaped, bearing setae ps3, with tips not extending to level of adanal suckers. Adanal suckers circular, diameter 18. Setae 3a and 4b situated at same transverse level. Setae 1a filiform, extending to midlevel of trochanters III; setae 4b reaching the level of setae g; setae 3a lanceolate in basal part, extending to midlevel of opisthosomal lobes. Distance between ventral setae: 4b:g 30, g:ps3 42, ps3:h3 108. Tarsus I with ventral setae la, ra, wa and s filiform, (Fig. 18 A). Genual solenidia: �� 1 I 35, �� III 28 long. Tarsus II with semi-circular ventral extensions, seta wa and s slightly thickened at base (Fig. 18 B). Ambulacral disc I normally developed, oval with long triangular central sclerite; ambulacral disc II slightly smaller, central sclerite triangular; ambulacral discs III and IV much smaller, 2.5���3 shorter than disc I. Legs III extending beyond lobar apices by tarsus and distal part of tibia. Tibia III with spine-like apical extension, 82 in length including extension, seta kT extending to midlevel of tarsus III (Figs. 17, 18 C). Tarsus III 77 long, with flattened apical process; setae w longer than half the length of this segment; setae e, f situated approximately at midlevel of this segment, subequal in length. Tibia IV 54 long, with dorsal ridge; tarsus IV 28 long, with tridentate apical extension (Fig. 18 D). Length of ambulacral discs: I���19, disc II���15, discs III, IV���5���7. Female (range for 2 paralectotype). Idiosoma, length �� width, 310���315 �� 190���195, length of hysterosoma 200���210. Prodorsal shield shaped as a longitudinal plate with blunt-angular lateral margins, short lateral extensions touching supracoxal sclerites, posterior margin straight and extending beyond level of scapular setae se, surface with a pair of median ridges, median area with larger dots than in lateral areas, length along midline 78���83, greatest width 60���64 (Fig. 19 A). Scapular setae se, si situated on small roughly triangular fragments of prodorsal shield, setal bases se separated by 68���72. Opisthosoma bluntly rounded. Hysteronotal shield represented by median narrow band sclerotized stronger (of dark yellow color) than remaining soft tegument of the body. Distance between dorsal setae c2:d2 68���70, d2:e2 85���88, e2:h3 40���45, h2:h2 57���60, h3:h3 44���46. Setae c2 short filiform, about 15 long, setae d2 and e2 strongly thickened, spiculiform, 85���90 and 54���60 long, respectively. Epimerites I free, posterior ends almost contiguous, area between free parts of epimerites not sclerotized (Fig. 19 B). Epigynum bow-shaped, 16���17 �� 45���48, its tips extending to level of genital papillae, setae 4b situated on epigynum. Apodemes of oviporus very long, extending to midlength between levels of trochanters III and IV. Epimerites IIIa, IVa absent. Setae 1a short filiform, not reaching the epigynum. Setae g and 3a situated at same transverse level. Setae 3a 15���16, 4a 18���20, 4b about 10, g 10���12 long. Distance between ventral setae: 4b:g 22��� 24, g:4a 55���60. Legs I, II as in male. Genual solenidia: ��1 I 28���30, �� III 8���11 long. Length of leg segments: tibia III 31���33, tarsus III 40 ���45, tibia IV 38 ���40, tarsus IV 54 ���56. Tarsi III, IV without ventral extensions. Setae sR III filiform, about 17���22 long; setae kT III filiform, shorter than corresponding tibiae (Fig. 19 B); tibial solenidia: �� III 1 8���20, �� IV 20���22 long. Setae w III, w IV, r IV thickened basally, with filiform apex; remaining setae of tarsi III, IV filiform. Ambulacral discs: I���14���15, II���12���13, III and IV���10���11 long. Ambulacral stalks of tarsi III, IV two times longer than corresponding discs. Setae d of tarsi III, IV about 1/3 the length of corresponding tarsi. Remarks. Describing Dubininia lorina, Trouessart (1885) reported two host species, Lorius garrulus (Linnaeus) and L. domicella (Linnaeus), from New Guinea and Moluccas. In studying Trouessart���s slides, we have found only a slide from L. domicella containing this mite species with the remark ���cotypes��� made by W.T. Atyeo. Proctophyllodes vesicularis Mironov sp. n. (Figs. 52–54) Type material. Male holotype (ZISP 6387), 7 male and 9 female paratypes from Euphonia anneae Cassin, 1865 (Fringillidae), COSTA RICA, Tapantí National Park, Sector Tapantí, Cordillera de Talamanca Mts., 09°46'N, 83°47′W, 31 July 2009, collectors I. Literak, O. Sychra and M. Capek. Depositories. Holotype, 5 male and 7 female paratypes (ZISP 6 387–6399)—ZISP; 1 male and 1 female paratype—UMMZ (BMOC-15-1028-002), 1 male and 1 female paratype—IMUCR. Additional material. 7 males and 10 females (ZISP 6432–6448), same collection data as for the type material, except date, 5 August 2009. Description. MALE (holotype, range for 7 paratypes in parentheses). Idiosoma, length × width, 240 (240– 250) × 130 (120–130), length of hysterosoma 150 (145–160). Prodorsal shield: antero-lateral extensions rounded, lateral margins entire, posterior margin straight, posterior angles roughly rounded, length 80 (80–82), width 100 (90–100), surface without ornamentation, setae ve rudimentary (Fig.52 A). Scapular setae se separated by 53 (52– 54). Humeral shields well developed, fused with epimerites III, encompassing bases of setae cp. Setae c2 on narrow anteromedial extensions of humeral shields. Subhumeral setae c3 lanceolate, 17 (15–18) × 5 (4.5–5). Hysteronotal shield: anterior margin straight anterior angles nearly right-angular, length 150 (145–150), width at anterior margin 93 (90–100), surface without ornamentation. Supranal concavity opened terminally, anterior end extending to midlevel between setae e1 and e2, length 38 (35–40). Posterior margin of opisthosoma between setae h2 slightly concave, shaped as blunt angle. Terminal lamellae narrow, tongue-shaped, not overlapping, with pennate venation; length 31 (26–32), maximal width 12 (12–13). Distances between hysteronotal setae: c2:d2 55 (50–55), d2:e2 64 (60–65), e2:h3 33 (32–35), d1:d2 22 (20–25), e1: e2 28 (26–28), h1:h3 13 (13–15), h2:h2 47 (45–50), h3:h3 31 (30–32), ps2:ps2 62 (60–62). Epimerites I fused into a narrow U, without lateral extensions. Setae 4b situated at level of inner tips of epimerites IIIa. Epimerites IVa well developed, extending to and encompassing bases of setae 4a. Genital arch long and narrow, 38 (36–38) in length, 22 (20–22) in width, its base situated at midlevel of trochanters IV. Genital organ shaped as large and thin hook curved immediately rearward from genital arch apex, 39 (38–40) in length, 7 (6.5– 7.5) in width at base (in exactly frontal position it looks sword-shaped, Figs. 52 B, 54A, B), extending to level of genital arch base; genital sheath monotonously tapering apically, extending to apex of aedeagus. Setae 4a at level of anterior one third of genital arch apex. Pregenital apodeme absent. Genital papillae of each side on small elongated plate (rudimentary paragenital apodemes), not touching at bases. Opisthogastric shield H-shaped, transverse bridge narrow, without incisions; anterior branches adjoining to genital arch with long and acute lateral extensions; lateral margins convex; posterior branches long attenuate, slightly curved medially, flanking anal field from anterior and lateral sides. Accessory sclerites reniform. Postanal sclerites present, bow-shaped, encompassing adanal suckers postero-laterally. Setae g and ps3 filiform, their bases arranged in low trapezium, setae g on anterior margin of transverse bridge, setae ps3 on lateral parts of opisthogastric shield; distances between these setae: g:g 7 (7–9), g:ps3 3 (3–4.5), ps3:ps3 29 (28–31). Distance from genital arch apex to setae ps1 106 (104–110). Adanal suckers cylindrical, 14 (13–15) in length, 10 (10–12) in width apically; corolla with 8–10 small denticles on anterior part, posterior part smooth. Femora I, II with ventral crest. Solenidion σ 1 I slightly shorter than genu I, situated at midlevel of segment (Fig. 54 C, D), solenidion σ III situated closer to distal margin of genu III. Tarsus IV 22 (22–25) long, button-like seta d situated in proximal half of this segment, button-like seta e with minute nipple (Fig. 54 E). Solenidion φ IV extending to midlevel of ambulacral disc. Length of solenidia: σ 1 I 40 (38–42), σ III 21 (20–21) φ IV 0 0 0 (35–37). FEMALE (range for 9 paratypes). Idiosoma, length × width, 380–390 × 150–160, length of hysterosoma 265– 275. Prodorsal shield: shape and surface as in males, length 100–105, width 120–125. Scapular setae se separated by 70-75. Scapular shields narrow. Humeral shields fused with epimerites III, encompassing bases of setae cp. Setae c2 on anterior end of humeral shields. Subhumeral setae c3 narrowly lanceolate, 20–22 × 5–6. Lobar region of opisthosoma distinctly separated from remaining part of hysterosoma, hysteronotal shield split dorsally into anterior and lobar parts by narrow transverse furrow and remains connected ventro-laterally by narrow sclerotized bands. Anterior hysteronotal shield: 210–215 in length, 110–115 in width, anterior margin straight, posterior margin slightly concave with a pair of small extensions bearing setae h1, surface without ornamentation (Fig. 53 A). Lobar shield entire, 60–65 in length, 80–85 in width, anterior margin with shallow median concavity. Opisthosomal lobes relatively short, their length approximately equal to width at base. Terminal cleft narrow U-shaped, 32–34 in length, 16–18 in width at midlevel. Setae h1 situated on posterior margin of anterior hysteronotal shield, on small extensions. Setae ps1 on lateral margins of terminal cleft, close to level of lobar apices. Setae h2 enlarged in basal part, approximately half the length of terminal appendages, 70–75 long; setae h3 38–40 long, about 1/4 of terminal appendages. Distance between dorsal setae: c2:d2 74–78, d2:e2 85–100, e2:h2 60–66, h2:h 3 25–28, d1:d2 33–38, e1: e2 32–35, h1:h 2 28–30, h2:ps 1 23–25, h1:h1 38–44, h2:h2 70–72. Epimerites I shaped as in males, with very thin connecting commissure. Epimerites IVa small. Epigynum semicircular, tips not extending to level of anterior genital papillae, lateral extensions absent, length 38–42, greatest width 64–68. Genital papillae situated on small ovate plates (Fig. 53 B). Genital setae g anterior to level of setae 3a. Translobar apodemes wide, connected each other anterior to terminal cleft. Setae ps2 situated at level of posterior end of anal opening. Distance between pseudanal setae: ps2:ps2 44–50, ps3:ps 3 18–21, ps2:ps 3 31–33.Flaps of anal opening not protruding into terminal cleft. Copulatory opening large, with sclerotized margin, covered with posterior ends of anal opening flaps. Head of spermatheca simple cone-like; distal part of primary spermaduct near copulatory opening with large ovate enlargement 31–36 × 20–22; secondary spermaducts extremely short, 2–3 long (Fig. 54 F). Legs I, II as in males. Solenidion σ III situated in basal half of genu III. Legs IV with ambulacral disc extending to level of setae f2. Length of solenidia: σ 1 I 15–16, σ III 7–9, φ III 34 –36, φ IV 20–22. Differential diagnosis. As with the previous species, Proctophyllodes vesicularis sp. n. belongs to the thraupis species group in having, in males, the genital arch narrow and the opisthogastric shield with a narrow anterior incision and with claw-shaped posterior branches. Among the three species previously known in this group, P. vesicularis is most similar to P. thraupis Atyeo and Braasch, 1966 and P. megathraupis Atyeo and Braasch, 1966 in having the opisthogastric shield with convex lateral margins and claw-shaped posterior branches in males. Males of P. vesicularis differ from P. thraupis and P. megathraupis by the following features: the terminal lamellae are shorter and narrower, 26–32 × 12–13 µm (vs. 42 × 22 µm in P. thraupis and 80 × 28 µm in P. megathraupis), the aedeagus extends to the level of the genital arch base (vs. distinctly extending beyond in P. thraupis and not extending in P. megathraupis), and epimerites IVa extend to setae 4a (vs. not extending in both the species). Females of P. vesicularis differ from those of P. thraupis (females of P. megathraupis are unknown) by the following features: the dorsal shields lack any ornamentation (vs. with numerous circular lacunae), the length of macrosetae h2 are half the length of the terminal appendages (vs. subequal in length), and the length of setae h3 are about 1/4 of the terminal appendages (vs. half the length or more). Etymology. The specific epithet is derived from vesicle (L., little bladder) to refer to the ovate enlargement of the primary spermaduct in females.

Platyacarus sittasomi Hernandes, Valim and Mironov, 2007 Platyacarus sittasomi Hernandes et al. 2007: 2675, figs. 41–51. Material examined. 5 males and 4 females (ZISP 6415–6423) from Sittasomus griseicapillus (Vieillot, 1818) (Furnariidae), COSTA RICA, Tapantí National Park, Sector Tapantí, Cordillera de Talamanca Mts., 09°46'N, 83°47'W, 2 August 2009, collectors I. Literak, O. Sychra and M. Capek; 10 males and 5 females (ZISP 6166– 6181), same host, COSTA RICA, Rincón de la Vieja National Park, Cordillera de Guanacaste Mts., 10°46'N, 85°18'W, 800 m, 21 August 2009, collectors I. Literak, O. Sychra and M. Capek. This species was previously known only from the type host, Sittasomus griseicapillus, in Brazil (Hernandes et al. 2007). Genus Atrichophyllodes Valim, Hernandes and Mironov, 2007 Type species: Atrichophyllodes delalandi Hernandes, Valim and Mironov, 2007, by original designation. Diagnosis. BOTH SEXES. Moderately elongated proctophyllodines. Prodorsal shield covering nearly the entire prodorsum, with antero-lateral extensions, and rounded posterior angles. Vertical setae vi rudimentary, represented by alveoli. Scapular setae si and se situated on prodorsal shield and arranged in transverse line. Humeral shields well-developed dorsally, encompassing bases of setae c2 and cp. Subhumeral setae c3 lanceolate. Epimerites I free, bow-shaped, with posterior ends slightly divergent. Hysteronotal setae d2 and e2 absent. Solenidion ��1 of genu I slightly longer than solenidion ��3 of tarsus I. Tarsi I, II with 3 ventral setae, setae wa anterior to setae la and ra on these tarsi. Segments of legs I and II without processes or other modifications. MALE. Hysteronotal shield covering almost all hysterosoma. Opisthosoma wide, opisthosomal lobes short and wide; posterior margin of lobes with semicircular terminal lamellae, striated or punctated dorsally. Supranal concavity well expressed. Setae h3 shorter than macrosetae h2. Setae h1 anterior to the level of setae ps2. Coxal fields I���IV open, without extensive sclerotized areas. Genital organ at level of trochanters IV; genital arch wide and low, aedeagus in sheath approximately twice as long as genital arch. Adanal shields present, variable in form, situated between adanal suckers and setae ps3, connected each other anterior to anal opening or free. Genital papillae situated at level of genital arch apex, surrounded by ovate plates or these plates absent. Pregenital and paragenital apodemes absent. Adanal apodemes present or absent. Opisthoventral shields poorly developed. Adanal suckers cylindrical, corolla dentate. Legs III and IV subequal, not hypertrophied. Tarsus IV without apical claw-like process, with or without ventral extension, modified setae d and e button-like. FEMALE. Lobar region of opisthosoma clearly separated from remaining part of hysterosoma, opisthosomal lobes well developed, with terminal appendages. Anterior hysteronotal and lobar shields separated by narrow band of striated tegument. Lobar shield entire or split longitudinally. Supranal concavity absent. Macrosetae h2 thickened basally, with filiform apex. Epigynum large, semicircular or horseshoe-shaped. Translobar apodemes present, fused with each other anterior to terminal cleft or free. Copulatory opening terminal or subterminal. Legs III and IV subequal in size; segments without modifications; solenidia �� of tibiae III and IV subequal or solenidion �� IV noticeably shorter. Hosts. Thamnophilidae, Tyrannidae. Remark. The genus Atrichophyllodes is close to Nycteridocaulus, in particular, by the form of the opisthosomal lobes, the terminal lamellae and the shape of the genital apparatus in males. It is readily differentiated from that genus by the lack of lateral idiosomal setae d2 and e 2 in both sexes. The genus previously included three species (Hernandes et al. 2007; Hernandes 2014). Key to Nycteridocaulus species (Males) 1. Hysteronotal shield fused laterally with humeral shields, anterior margin slightly convex, greatest length from anterior margin to level of setae h3 240���245, surface with a pair of longitudinally striated patches mesal to area of humeral shields. Setae c2 situated on anterior margins of humeral shields. Lateral margins of opisthosoma converging posteriorly and slightly concave, width of opisthosoma at level of setae f2 115���120. Scapular setae se, si situated on small circular fragments of prodorsal shield, setae se separated by 73���75. Opisthosoma widely rounded. Hysteronotal shield absent. Anisophyllodes pipromorphae, the type species of the genus Anisophyllodes, was originally described from heteromorph and homeomorph males from Mionectes oleagineus (Tyrannidae) from Trinidad (Atyeo 1967a), while its female remained unknown. This species displays several unique morphological characteristics within the family Proctophyllodidae. It is one of rarest cases with two discretely different forms of males. The only other case known in this family is represented by the monobasic genus Ptyctophyllodes Atyeo, 1967. Additionally, females of A. pipromorphae, described herein, have the epigynum fused with the tips of epimerites IIIa (Fig. 41 B). This morphological feature is the main and unconditional diagnostic characteristic of the subfamily Pterodectinae (Park & Atyeo 1971a; Gaud & Atyeo 1996). No doubt, this character state arose independently in A. pipromorphae and the subfamily Pterodectinae. Nycteridocaulus pectinatus is a remarkable species within the genus Nycteridocaulus in having a unique structure of terminal lamellae in males, which are strongly indented and resemble a hair comb. The species was previously known from Tolmomyias flaviventris (zu Wied-Neuwied) (Tyrannidae) in Trinidad (Atyeo 1966a). The mite fauna inhabiting nests of various birds in Bulgaria and the world as a whole not yet been insufficient studied. Data of mites of many species of birds, one of which is Ficedula semitorquata are still scarce. The aim of the present paper is to describe the taxonomic diversity and distribution of astigmatic, prostigmatic and mesostigmatic mites in nests of semi-collared flycatcher in North-East Bulgaria. Differences in the species richness and abundance of mites at studied nest-box plots were assessed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Pairwise comparisons were performed using Tukey´s tests. Twelve species, belonging to seven families of mites (Dermanyssidae, Macronyssidae, Laelapidae, Myonyssidae, Macrochelidae, Cheyletidae and Acaridae) were recorded. 157 (83.51%) of investigating 188 nests were infested with mites and the average abundance per nest was 21.24. The distribution of the found species in the nests and nest-box plots is uneven. Comparisons of species richness and abundance at studied nest-box plots show statistically significant differences. The analysis of the results shows that none of the identified 12 species not found at all seven plots. Only two species – Dermanyssus gallinae and Androlaelaps casalis were present in six of the sites, and three other – Androlaelaps fahrenholzi, Cheyletus malaccensis and Eucheyletia bakeri were found only at one of the nest-box plots. The mite fauna in the nests of semi-collared flycatcher seem to be influenced from the quantity and quality of the imported from the outside mites, as well as from the microclimate in the different nests and plots. Two new feather mite species of the superfamily Analgoidea are described from the hairy woodpecker Leuconotopicus villosus (Linnaeus, 1766) (Piciformes: Picidae) in Panama: Pterotrogus panamensis sp. n. (Pteronyssidae) and Trouessartia hernandesi sp. n. (Trouessartiidae). Pterotrogus panamensis belongs to the simplex species group and most clearly differs from the other species of this group in having the pregenital sclerite paired in males, and the hysteronotal shields strongly narrowed posteriorly in females. Trouessartia hernandesi is close to T. picumni Hernandes, 2014, the only previously known species of this genus from woodpeckers, and differs from the latter by having the following features: in both sexes, setae d1 and d2 are present and genual setae cGI, cGII and mGI are spiculiform; in males, epimerites IVa are long, bow-shaped and extend to the base of the genital apparatus; in females, the external copulatory tube is long and spiculiform.

Aims Carpoglyphus lactis is a stored product mite infesting saccharide-rich stored commodities including dried fruits, wine, beer, milk products, jams and honey. The association with micro-organisms can improve the survival of mites on dried fruits. Methods and Results The microbial communities associated with C. lactis were studied in specimens originating from the packages of dried apricot, plums and figs and compared to the laboratory strain reared on house dust mite diet (HDMd). Clone libraries of bacterial 16S rRNA gene and fungal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region were constructed and analysed by operational taxonomic unit (OTU) approach. The 16S rRNA gene libraries differed among the compared diets. The sequences classified to the genera Leuconostoc, Elizabethkingia, Ewingella, Erwinia, Bacillus and Serratia were prevailing in mites sampled from the dried fruits. The ITS library showed smaller differences between the laboratory strain on HDMd and the isolates from dried fruits packages, with the exception of the mite strain from dried plums. The population growth was used as an indirect indicator of fitness and decreased in the order from yeast diet to HDMd and dried fruits. Conclusions The treatment and pretreatment of mites by antibiotics did not reveal the presence of antagonistic bacteria which might slow down the C. lactis population growth. The shifts of the microbial community in the gut of C. lactis were induced by the diet changes. The identified yeasts and bacteria are suggested as the main food source of stored product mites on dried fruits. Significance and Impact of the Study The study describes the adaptation of C. lactis to feeding on dried fruits including the interaction with micro-organisms. We also identified potentially pathogenic bacteria carried by the mites to dried fruits for human consumption.

Among acarid mites, a number of species are characterised by the presence of discontinuous morphologies (armed heteromorphs vs. unarmed homeomorphs) associated with alternative mating tactics (fighting vs. scramble competition). In Rhizoglyphus echinopus, expression of the fighter morph is suppressed, via pheromones, in large, dense colonies. If this mechanism is adaptive, fighters should have relatively lower fitness in large and/or dense colonies, due to costs incurred from fighting, which is often fatal. In order to test these predictions, we quantified the survival and mating success of fighters and scramblers in colonies of equal sex and morph ratios; these colonies either differed in size (4, 8, or 32 individuals) but not density or differed in density but not size (all consisted of 8 individuals). We found that the relative survival and mating success of fighters was inversely related to colony size, but we did not find a significant effect of colony density. The higher mating success of fighters in small colonies was due to the fact that, after killing rival males, these fighters were able to monopolise females. This situation was not found in larger colonies, in which there was a larger number of competitors and fighters suffered relatively higher mortality. These results indicate that morph determination, guided by social cues, allows for the adaptive adjustment of mating tactics to existing demographic conditions. The article describes a new species of the feather mite subfamily Pterodectinae from the Little Spiderhunter Arachnothera longirostra Temminck, 1826 (Passeriformes, Nectariniidae) in India. Pedanodectes angustilobus sp. n. differs from all known Pedanodectes species byopisthosomal lobes short, at base wider than long, roughly rounded apically in males, and strongly elongated and narrowed lobar region with wide terminal appendages in females. A key to species of the genus Pedanodectes is presented.

Setae c 2 situated on humeral shields, lanceolate, with acute apex, 20 long. Setae c 3 narrowly lanceolate with acute apex, 16 long. Dorsal hysterosoma with prohysteronotal shield and lobar shield completely separated. Prohysteronotal shield length 140, width at anterior margin 105, lateral margins with shallow incisions at level of trochanters III, dorsal hysterosomal apertures (DHA) absent. Dorsal setae d 1, d 2 present, minute. Length of lobar shield excluding lamellae 40. Apical parts of opisthosomal lobes approximate, separated by narrow terminal cleft; length of this cleft from anterior end to apices of lamellae 18, width in anterior part 4. The male of the new species, Trouessartia longidenticulata Constantinescu sp. n., shows a unique character state within the genus Trouessartia, in having the lamellae of the opisthosomal lobes with long and sharp denticles. The new species is very similar to T. latisetata Gaud, 1952, described from Hypsipetes (=Ixocincla) madagascariensis (M��ller) (Passeriformes, Pycnonotidae) in Madagascar (Gaud 1952) in having the following features: in both sexes, the external scapular setae se are situated near the lateral margins of the prodorsal shield, the hysteronotal shield has a similar ornamentation and its lateral margins are with shallow incisions at the level of trochanters III, setae sRIII and si are filiform, setae c 3 are narrowly lanceolate, with acute apex. Males of both species have setae g spaced apart at the bases, the anterior ends of epimerites IVa extend beyond the level of setae g and 4 a, the adanal apodemes are without apophyses and the translobar apodeme is present. Females of both species have setae h 1 filiform, setae ps 1 closer to base of h 3 setae, the supranal concavity is open posteriorly into the terminal cleft and the external copulatory tube is absent. Trouessartia longidenticulata Constantinescu sp. n. differs from T. latisetata by the following character states: in both sexes, setae c 2 are lanceolate; in males the prohysteronotal shield and the lobar shield are completely separated. The specific epithet derives from the generic name of the host and is a noun in apposition. Hosts and distribution. This species is known from shrews of the genus Sylvisorex, S. granti (type species), S. lunaris, S. vulcanorum and the genus Crocidura, C. denti, C. cf. niobe, and Crocidura sp. in DR of Congo (present paper). Differential diagnosis. The new species, Soricilichus sylvisorex sp. nov., differs from the two other species of this genus by following features. In both sexes of S. sylvisorex, setae cp are shorter 55 (vs. longer than 70 in both other species); in males, the adanal sclerite is small and without median concavity (vs. large and with deep median concavity). Additionally, this species differs from S. scutisorex by the following character states. In both sexes of S. sylvisorex, setae cp and c 3 are situated off the sclerotized parts of coxal fields III (vs. on these parts in S. scutisorex); in males, the anterior margin of the hysteronotal shield is roughly triangular (vs. almost straight), setae d 1 are situated far anterior from the anterior margin of this shield (vs. almost at level of this margin), the ventrolateral membrane has a triangular posterior edge (vs. with widely rounded edge); in females, setae h 2 are 30–40 long (vs. 9–10 long). Females of S. sylvisorex differ from those of S. kivuensis in having shorter setae h 2 30–40 long (vs. 75–90 in S. kivuensis).

Genus Xynonodectes Park & Atyeo, 1971a Type species: Proctophyllodes (Pterodectes) gracilior Trouessart, 1885, by original designation. Males of this genus have setae ps3 lateral or posterolateral to the adanal suckers, and these suckers are weakly sclerotized (corolla smooth); females have the anterior portion of the epigynum straight (or ���square���), and epimerites I without diverging tips. Rudimentary sclerites rEpIIa present, small, close to tips of epimerites III. Coxal fields I closed, II–IV closed. Epimerites IVa bearing 4a and connected anterior to genital apparatus. Genital arch 26 (24–28) in width; aedeagus 45 (41–49) long from anterior bend to tip, extending to midlevel between setae g and ps3. Genital papillae not connected at bases. Genital shields absent; adanal shield represented by a pair of thin, oblique sclerites between the levels of setae g and ps3. Scapular shields narrow, poorly developed dorsally. Humeral shields present, with antero-lateral angles bearing setae c2. Setae cp situated ventrally on humeral shield. Subhumeral setae c3 lanceolate, 21–25 × 5–7. Anterior and lobar parts of hysteronotal shield separated, with narrow band of integument between those shields (Fig. 11 A). Distance between prodorsal and anterior hysteronotal shields 22–36. Anterior hysteronotal shield roughly rectangular, anterior margin slightly concave, greatest length 178–197, width at anterior margin 102–114, surface smooth. Length of lobar region 72–88, greatest width 87–102. Terminal cleft narrow, 43–56 long. Supranal concavity present; lobar shield surface without ornamentation. Setae h1 piliform, at same level as supranal concavity. Setae h2 lanceolate with round apex, 49–59 × 7–8. Setae ps1 situated near inner margins of opisthosomal lobes, approximately equidistant between h3 and h2. Setae h 3 19–30 long. Distances between dorsal setae: c1: d2 89–104, d2: h1 109–121, h2: h2 69–79, h3: h3 35–48. Epimerites I fused as an inverted π (Fig. 11 B). Coxal fields I–II, IV open. Epimerites IVa present. Translobar apodemes of opisthosomal lobes present, thin, fused to each other anterior to terminal cleft. Epigynum horseshoe shaped, greatest width 71–84; apodemes of ovipore separated from epimerites IIIa. Primary spermaduct with slight enlargement near head of spermatheca; secondary spermaducts 13–21 long (Fig. 12 G). Pseudanal setae filiform, setae ps2 situated at level of posterior half of anal opening; distance between pseudanal setae: ps2: ps2 51–62, ps3: ps 3 19–26, ps2: ps 3 11–19. Femora II with ventral crest, other segments of legs I, II without processes. Solenidion σ1 of genu I, 24–39 long, situated at midlevel of segment. Solenidion σ of genu III inserted basally. Genual setae cG I, II, mG I, II as in male. Seta d of tarsi I, II slightly shorter than corresponding seta f, setae d of tarsi III, IV 3–4 times shorter than corresponding setae f. Genu IV not inflated. Differential diagnosis. Trochilodectes willisi sp. nov. resembles T. brevicaulus Černý, 1974 and T. ramphodonis Park & Atyeo, 1974 in having the aedeagus reaching the midlevel between setae g and ps3. In T. brevipenis Hernandes, 2013 it reaches only the level of setae g, in T. trochilidarum (Trouessart, 1885) it extends to the level of ps3, and in all the remaining species the aedeagus is much longer and always extends beyond the level of setae ps3 (Park & Atyeo 1974). The new species is distinguished from the two closest species, T. brevicaulus and T. ramphodonis, in having a pair of thin, oblique adanal shields between setae g and ps 3 in males. These sclerites are absent in T. brevicaulus and T. ramphodonis, and also in T. bicuspidus, T. latifoliatus, and T. ramphodonis, albeit present in five other species of the genus (T. abbreviatus, T. alloptinus, T. buconvexus, T. mucronatus, T. tenuifolia). It also is distinguished from T. brevicaulus in having much shorter setae h 3 in males, approximately equal to the width of each opisthosomal lobe. In T. brevicaulus setae h3 are about twice as long as each lobe’s width. Females of Trochilodectes willisi are distinguished from those of T. brevicaulus in having the length and greatest width of lobar shield (at level of h2) subequal, setae h1 situated posterior to the level of setae f2, and the anterior hysteronotal shield without any ornamentation. In females of T. brevicaulus, the lobar shield is 1.3–1.4 times wider than long, setae h1 are anterior to the level of setae f2, and the posterior part of anterior hysteronotal shield is ornamented with several circular lacunae. Females of the new species differ from T. ramphodonis in having the bases of setae f2 situated on the very margin of lobar shield, and a narrower terminal cleft with the length exceeding about 6 times the width at level of setae ps1. In females of T. ramphodonis, the bases of setae f2 are moved mesal from the lateral margins of lobar shield, and the terminal cleft is 3–4 times the width at level of ps1. Etymology. The species is named in memory of the late professor Edwin O’Neill Willis (1935–2015), who has greatly contributed to the improvement and understanding of ornithology in Brazil (Ragusa-Netto 2015).

The fur-mite genus Soricilichus Fain, 1970 (3 species) (Acariformes: Chirodiscidae) represented by permanent symbionts of the African shrews of the subfamily Crocidurinae (Soricomorpha: Soricidae) is revised. The external morphology of these species was investigated with light and scanning electron microscopy. Based on the type specimens and newly obtained samples, 2 recognized species, S. scutisorex Fain, 1970 from Scutisorex somereni Thomas and S. kivuensis Fain, 1981 from Crocidura sp.-both are from DR of Congo-are redescribed. A new species S. sylvisorex sp. nov. found on shrews of the genera Sylvisorex (S. granti Thomas (type host), S. lunaris Thomas, S. vulcanorum Hutterer and Verheyen) and Crocidura (C. denti Dollman, C. cf. niobe, Crocidura sp.), collected in the DR Congo is also described. An amended generic diagnosis, including description of female immature stages, and a key to species are provided.

Differential diagnosis. Xynonodectes phaethornis sp. nov. is most similar to X. glaucalis Park & Atyeo, 1975 in having setae h1, in males, inserted at the midline of the opisthosomal lobes (rather than on their inner margins as in X. gracilior (Trouessart, 1885), and by the shape of opisthosomal lobes, with the terminal cleft well-spaced (and not narrow with inner margins of lobes almost touching, as in X. serratus). The new species can be distinguished from X. glaucalis by the following features: in males, the adanal shields are absent, the aedeagus does not reach the level of the anterior end of anal opening; in females, epimerites I are free, and the supranal concavity is situated posterior to the level of setae h1 and is almost continuous with the terminal cleft. In males of X. glaucalis, a pair of adanal shields is present anterior to the adanal suckers, the aedeagus reaches the level of the adanal suckers; in females, the supranal concavity is situated approximately at the same level as setae h1, clearly detached from the terminal cleft. Thyreophagus cracentiseta n. sp. (Figs. 1���5) Diagnosis. Females and homeomorphic males with tarsi III bearing 7 apical spine-like setae [1 dorso-apical and 6 ventral (4 apical, 1 subapical and 1 median)]; prodorsal sclerite ornamented with broken striae on most of its extent, with slightly longer sections near posterior margin, punctate near anterior margin and over rounded anterolateral extensions; dorsal setae cp, e2, h2 and h3 smooth, filiform and slender; ro and ex slightly longer and thicker. Grandjean��s organ anteriorly expanded into membranous finger-like extensions. Base of spermathecal sclerite arched. Description. FEMALE (Figs. 1���4; n= 6). Dorsum (Figures 1 A; 2A���2B): Idiosoma elongate, 485 (460���515) long, 195 (170���220) wide at coxa III level; cuticle smooth. Prodorsal sclerite 84 (78���87) long and 75 (68���78) wide at anterior margins, with lateral incisions; ornamented with broken striae on most of its extent, with sections slightly longer near posterior margin and punctate near anterior margin and over rounded anterolateral extensions. Grandjean��s organ anteriorly expanded in 9���10 membranous finger-like extensions; supracoxal seta (elc I) smooth and arched, 16 (12���19) long. Dorsal idiosomal setae smooth, filiform and slender, except rostral (ro) and exobothridial (ex), setiform, thicker than other dorsal setae, tapering from base to tip). Spermatheca, composed of sclerotized, arched base, 15 (13���19) wide, and elliptical vesicle where sperm is stored. Ovaries, where fertilization taking place, paired and connected to sclerotized structure of spermatheca by efferent ducts. Oviducts trident-shaped near ovaries and continuing as thick tube. Considering reduced diameter of visible part of oviducts, especially tube, it seeming that fertilized egg cells rather than developed eggs move through oviducts to uterus. Uterus and final portion of oviduct indistinguishable. Gnathosoma (Fig. 2 E, F): Chelicera chelate, 79 (72���83), fixed digit 23 (19���27), with 3 teeth in addition to apical tooth; movable digit 25 (23���27) long, with 2 teeth in addition to apical tooth; cheliceral seta (cha) spine-like, 3 (2���4) long. The name cracentiseta is a compound of cracentis (Latin for slender) and seta (Latin for hair), referring to the very thin form of most dorsal setae. The name is a noun in apposition. Remarks. The genus Thyreophagus is known from adults and heteromorphic deutonymphs. Thyreophagus cracentiseta n. sp. is the second species of this genus reported from Brazil and the first described as new from this country. This new species strongly resembles T. tridens (Fain & Lukoschus 1986) by having similar body length, prodorsal sclerite and having most dorsal setae similar in length. In addition, T. tridens has the spermathecal sclerite arched and the same number of spines on tarsi of legs I���IV as T. cracentiseta. However, T. tridens differs from T. cracentiseta by having a different pattern of punctation on the prodorsal sclerite (punctulate on its anterior two thirds or three quarters and fine striations on the rest of the sclerite) and smaller �� III and �� IV (1.7 and 3.5 times smaller, respectively). This new species resembles Thyreophagus spinitarsis (Fain, 1982) by having similar patterns on the prodorsal sclerite. The latter differs from T. cracentiseta n. sp. by having the idiosoma about 1.9 times as long, most of the dorsal idiosomal setae about 1.5 times as long and by having the sclerotized base of the spermatheca approximately bell-shaped. Thyreophagus australis Clark, 2009 is similar to this new species by having Grandjean��s organ anteriorly expanded in membranous finger-like extensions and the male without any projection or sclerite on the posterior opisthosomal region. However, T. australis differs by having females with the idiosoma globose instead of elongate, setae ro and ex more than four times longer and the sclerotized base of the spermatheca as a transverse band. Thyreophagus gallegoi gallegoi Fain, 1982 resembles this new species by having the idiosoma and dorsal setae of about the same lengths, similar shape of sclerotized base of spermatheca and by producing heteromorphic males. Genus Trochilodectes Park & Atyeo, 1971a Type species: Proctophyllodes (Pterodectes) trochilidarum Trouessart, 1885, by original designation. Males of this genus have setae ps3 inserted anterior to the adanal suckers, and females have setae h2 dagger-like, without a terminal filament. A key to the nine species known up to the time was provided by Park & Atyeo (1974); two more species were subsequently described (Čern�� 1974; Hernandes 2013). The specific epithet derives from generic name of the type host and is a noun in genitive case. Differential diagnosis. The new species, Trouessartia dicruri Constantinescu sp. n., is most similar to T. delicatula Gaud, 1952 described from Dicrurus forficatus (Linnaeus) (Passeriformes, Dicruridae) in Madagascar (Gaud 1952). In both sexes of these species, setae d 1 are present, setae c 2 are spiculiform and setae sR of trochanters III are lanceolate with acute apex; in males, the translobar apodeme is present, setae g are long and contiguous at bases, the postgenital plaque is present; in females, the supranal concavity is open posteriorly into the terminal cleft, setae ps 1 are positioned on the mesal margins of the opisthosomal lobes and the external copulatory tube is present. The new species differs from T. delicatula in the first instance being a smaller species (T. dicruri males are 420���452 long, females 500���532 long, vs. c. 575 and 595, respectively in T. delicatula). In males of the new species, the adanal apodemes are without apophyses, the terminal lamellae have a shape of a parallelogram and do not touch each other at the inner margins, and the posterior genital papillae are more distant from the midline than the anterior ones. In males of T. delicatula, the adanal apodemes have a pair of apophyses, the terminal lamellae are semi-ovate, their inner margins touch each other at the level of setae h 3, and the anterior and posterior genital papillae are equidistant from the midline. In females of the new species, the setae h 1 are lanceolate, with acute apex, the interlobar membrane occupies the anterior 1 / 5 of the terminal cleft, and the ornamentation of hysteronotal shield does not exceed the level of setae d 2. GENUS Michaelia TROUESSART, 1884 Type species: Freyana (Canestrinia) bihamata MØgnin and Trouessart, 1884 (= Dermaleichus heteropus Michael, 1881, synonymy by Trouessart, 1884: 527), originally described from Phalacrocorax aristotelis (Linnaeus, 1761) (= P. cristatus [Gmelin, 1798]). Males of the feather mite genus Michaelia are so bizarrely distorted that, when the first species " Dermaleichus heteropus Michael, 1881 " was discovered, the author was reluctant to describe it based on a single male found, fearing it might be an abnormally distorted specimen (Michael 1881). He was only encouraged to describe the odd mite after he collected more specimens in the next year, and realized that all were identically asymmetrical. Michaelia species are large sized freyanids (females 600 – 750 µm, males 800 – 1090 µm in length). There are two male morphs in these mites, homeomorphs and heteromorphs; both morphs have asymmetrical anterior legs, but the opisthosomal lobes are asymmetrical only in heteromorphs. Females and immatures are absolutely symmetrical and are relatively wider and shorter than both male morphs. All five species of Michaelia including a new species described herein are associated with cormorants (Pelecaniformes, genus Phalacrocorax) (Dubinin, 1953; Gaud, 1970; Gaud and Atyeo, 1982). Besides all these valid species included in the key below, Dubinin (1953) recognized three more species without formal descriptions of them (Michaelichus americanus, M. javanicus and M. malaicus). These species, as noted by Gaud and Atyeo (1982), are nomina nuda. Taxonomic remarks — Gaud and Atyeo (1982) correctly indicated that Michaelia Trouessart, 1884 preceded Michaelichus Trouessart and MØgnin, 1885 and therefore the former genus name has priority. They also emended the spelling of the subfamily from Michaelichinae Gaud and Mouchet 1959 to Michaeliinae, which was an unjustified emendation. According to article 40.1 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN), the junior synonymy of a type genus should not affect the subfamily name. A survey was carried out to investigate astigmatid mites associated with four unrelated insect species, belonging to four families. The four insect species, Musca domestica (Linnaeus, 1785) (Diptera: Muscidae), Labidura riparia (Pallas, 1773) (Dermaptera: Labiduridae), Gryllus bimaculatus (DeGeer, 1773) (Orthoptera: Gryllidae), and Periplaneta americana (Linnaeus, 1758) (Blattaria: Blattidae), collected from different localities in Riyadh, were observed. Four astigmatid mites (Caloglyphus csibbii Eraky, Histiostoma camphori Eraky, Histiostoma pickaxei Eraky and Shoker, and Myianoetus lili Eraky) belonging to two families, Acaridae and Histiostomatidae, were recorded on G. bimaculatus, L. riparia, P. americana, and M. domestica, respectively. All recorded mites are considered new to Saudi Arabian mite fauna. One individual of Copronomoia sphaerocerae (Vitzthum) (Histiostomatidae) mite, previously recorded in Saudi Arabia, was found on M. domestica. For each mite species found, notes on density and attachment sites are given. An identification key, based on deutonymphal stages, for the five mite species reported in this study and other phoretic astigmatid mites previously recorded on insects in Saudi Arabia is provided.

A partir do atendimento veterinário dos criadouros de coelhos, o objetivo do trabalho científico foi descrever as infestações por Leporacarus gibbus, induzindo quadros de dermatite, com alopecia ou não, em coelhos domésticos criados zootecnicamente em Vigia, Estado do Pará, e Mogi, Estado de São Paulo, Brasil. Foram avaliados dois criadores por demanda espontânea, um em cada Estado, que exploravam comercialmente os coelhos. Em São Paulo, dos 250 animais do plantel, 23 estavam com manifestações visíveis de dermatite com alopecia, mas 89 coelhos estavam parasitados; no Pará, dos 120 animais que compunham o plantel, 82 estavam com ácaros aderidos ao pêlo, e sete tinham dermatite; outro animal do mesmo plantel que fora vendido como animal de companhia, foi atendido no Hospital Veterinário da UFRA, com diagnóstico final de dermatite por ácaros. A coleta das amostras para exame laboratorial foi realizada tricotomia com auxilio de uma tesoura, transporte dos pêlos para o laboratório, isolamento manual dos ácaros por remoção dos pêlos, colocados em etanol 70%, e posterior montagem entre lâmina e lamínula com meio de Hoyer. A identificação dos ácaros foi feita por microscopia. Na intervenção medicamentosa foi usada a ivermectina, em dose única na concentração de 300 mg/ kg, via subcutânea, com 100% de eficiência em até 30 dias pós-tratamento.

Two vertical setae vi present, long filiform, their bases close to each other. Scapular shields as narrow oblique bands. Humeral shields well developed, encompassing bases of setae c 2, c 3 and cp. Hysterosoma with extensive hysteronotal shield. Lateral sclerotized bands of hysterosoma absent. Full set of hysteronotal setae occurring in pterolichids present. Scapular setae si well developed, spiculiform, close to bases of corresponding se; both pairs distant from body midline. Tarsus IV elongated, similar in form and size to tarsus III; modified setae d button-like, seta e shaped as small spine. FEMALE. Spiculiform setae si with several additional subapical spines. Hysteronotal shield entire, covering almost entire dorsal surface of hysterosoma. Setae d 2 filiform minute; e 2 spiculiform; setae f 2, ps 1, ps 2 filiform minute; setae h 1 spiculiform. Supranal concavity present. Oviporus situated at level of humeral shields and epimerites III. Epigynum present, horseshoe-shaped. Copulatory opening subterminal. Differential diagnosis. The new genus Ciganalichus gen. n. resembles Coccylichus Gaud, 1966 associated with African cuckoos in general appearance and several other morphological features. In both sexes of these genera, the idiosoma is distinctly elongated (2���2.5 times longer than wide), epimerites I are fused into a Y, epimerites I, II are simple and lack basal inflations, subhumeral setae c 3 are lanceolate; segments of legs I���IV are not modified, tarsi of all legs are longer than corresponding tibiae; in males, the opisthosomal lobes are small and without any membranous structures, legs III and IV are not modified, and the paragenital apodemes are absent. Ciganalichus can be readily differentiated from Coccylichus by the following characters: in both sexes, setae si are thick spiculiform, the humeral shields are well developed, and the humeral setae cp are extremely short (not exceeding half the greatest width of hysterosoma); in males, the genital papillae are anterior to the genital organ, and setae f 2 are anterior to the bases of setae ps 2; in females, the hysteronotal shield is entire, and setae e 2 are spiculiform. In both sexes of Coccylichus, setae si are minute filiform, the humeral shields are absent, and the humeral setae cp are normally developed, about half the greatest width of hysterosoma; in males, the genital papillae are situated lateral to the genital apparatus, bases of setae f 2 and ps 2 adjacent in females, the hysteronotal shield is split transversely at the level of setae e 1, and setae e 2 are minute filiform. Remark. The genus Ciganalichus gen. n., in spite of a number of superficial similarities to Coccylichus, is most closely related to the genera Opisthocomacarus, Stakyonemus and a new genus Hoazinacarus gen. n. described below from the hoatzin. Adults of all four genera from this bird, except males of Ciganalichus, have one or more pairs of modified idiosomal setae with spines and barbs, while in Coccylichus all idiosomal setae are smooth and setiform. Within this group of genera, Ciganalichus is apparently the least morphologically derived genus, because the females have only one pair of setae with barbs (si), while six modified setae are spine-shaped; in males, six modified idiosomal setae, including setae si, are also spine-shaped (Figs 18 A, 19 A). In both sexes of these two species, setae d 2 are absent and the humeral shields lack bent extensions, setae se are long, extending beyond the anterior margin of hysteronotal shield, at least five times longer than si, and tarsi IV are straight, without apices; in males, the hysteronotal shield is not transversely separated, but has a pair of deep lateral incisions at level of femora IV, femur IV has one ventral and one dorsal retrorse processes (an unique feature shared by both these species), the shape of the lateral incisions of the hysteronotal shield is simple, the opisthosomal lobes, including the interlobar membrane, are not overlapping; in females, femora III and IV each bear one dorsal and one ventral moderately developed retrorse process. The new species differs from P. hippolais by following features. In both sexes of P. motacillae sp. nov., setae ba I, II are absent, and coxal fields II to IV are completely opened; in males, cupules ih are situated posterolateral to adanal suckers, and the aedeagus is about 20 long, extending beyond the genital arch; in females, the posterior margin of the hysteronotal shield is straight. Setae si short setiform, 12 (16���20) in length, separated by 49 (50���53); setae se long, about 160 long. Humeral shield with setae c 2 lanceolate, 41 (36���41) in length. Hysteronotal shield length 240 (230���240), width 140 (130���140), surface with some almost transparent lightly sclerotized patches, number and shape of patches not consistent among individuals. Among known species of the genus Neocalcealges, the new species is closest to N. emarginatus Orwig, 1968 from the Chestnut-capped Laughingthrush Ianthocincla mitrata (M��ller) (Passeriformes: Leiothrichidae) (Orwig 1968). In both sexes of the two species, setae d 1 and e 2 are present. In males of both species, one pair of narrow curved platelets (~metapodonotal platelets) are present at the level of trochanters III, branching from the lateral margins of the hysteronotal shield, and the terminal lamellae have indentations. The new species differs from N. emarginatus in the following characters: in males of N. davidi sp. nov., the lateral margin of hysteronotal shield has a pair of shallow incisions at the level of coxae IV and a pair of narrow and deep lateral incisions at the level of setae e 2 extending to bases of these setae; the platelets at the level of trochanters III are long and extend to the lateral margins of the hysterosoma; setae f 2 are reduced to alveoli near the base of setae ps 2; the terminal lamellae have six (4���7) indentations; in females, setae h 1 are posterior to the supranal concavity; the opisthosomal lobes are long, 39���47 in length. In males of N. emarginatus, the lateral incisions of the hysteronotal shield at the level of setae e 2 are shallow and not extending to the bases of these setae; the platelets at the level of trochanters III do not extend to the lateral margin of the body; setae f 2 are present; the terminal lamellae have only two indentations; in females, setae h 1 are anterior to the supranal concavity; the opisthosomal lobes are short, about 25 in length. Holotype male [IOZ(E) 227743], 2 male and 2 female paratypes ex Aegithalos iouschistos bonvaloti (Oustalet) (Passeriformes: Aegithalidae), CHINA: Sichuan, 31 ��03'38.35'' N, 103 �� 33 '21.84'' E, 23 April 2014, coll. N. Mu. Etymology. The specific epithet derives from the generic name of the host. Differential diagnosis. The new species is closest to Passeroptes garrulax Fain, 1965 from Garrulax bicolor Hartlaub (Passeriformes: Leiothrichidae) (Fain 1965). In both sexes of these two species, setae d 2 are present, and the humeral shields are well developed and have bent extensions; in males, the hysteronotal shield is not transversely separated and has a pair of deep lateral incisions at the level of femora IV, the shape of the lateral incisions of the hysteronotal shield is simple, the processes on femora III, IV are absent, the opisthosomal lobes, including the interlobar membrane, are separated from each other, the margin of the interlobar membrane is emarginate, cupules ih are situated posterior to the adanal suckers, the aedeagus is short, and coxal apodeme IVa is smaller than the adanal shields; in females, femora III and IV each bear one dorsal and one ventral moderately developed retrorse process. The new species differs from P. garrulax in the following features. In both sexes of P. aegithalos sp. nov., setae se are long, being six times longer than si, extending beyond the anterior margin of the hysteronotal shield; in males, coxal apodemes II to IV are free, and coxal apodemes IVa are less developed, only about 12 long; in females, coxal fields III are opened only in the anterior third, and setae d 2 are long, being 15, 18 long. Genus Temnalges Gaud and Atyeo, 1967 Type species: Temnalges mesalgoides Gaud & Atyeo, 1967, by original designation. The genus Temnalges was established by Gaud and Atyeo (1967) and originally included a single species, Temnalges mesalgoides from Porphyrio madagascariensis (Latham) (Gruiformes: Rallidae). Soon after, Gaud (1968) described one more species, T. megalonyx Gaud, 1968, also from a rallid host, Amaurornis flavirostra (Swainson). Gaud (1976) moved Psoroptoides bothrioplax Gaud, 1958 described from Chlidonias niger (Linnaeus) (Charadriiformes: Laridae) to the genus Temnalges. Further, Shereef and Rakha (1981) described two species from two more aquatic bird orders: T. amalichus Shereef and Rakha, 1981 from Plegadis falcinellus Linnaeus (Pelecaniformes: Threskiornithidae) and T. mahranus Shereef and Rakha, 1981 from Anas querquedula Linnaeus (Anseriformes: Anatidae).
