The first stage of the FCC (Future Circular Collider) is a high-luminosity electron-positron collider (FCC-ee) with centre-of-mass energy ranging from 88 to 365 GeV, to study with high precision the Z, W, Higgs and top particles, with samples of $5 \times 10^{12}$ Z bosons, $10^8$ W pairs, $10^6$ Higgs bosons and $10^6$ top quark pairs. A cornerstone of the physics program lays in the precise (ppm) measurements of the W and Z masses and widths, as well as forward-backward asymmetries. To this effect the centre-of-mass energy distribution should be determined with the high precision. This document describes the capacity offered by FCC-ee, starting with transverse polarization of the beams around the Z pole and the W pair threshold. A running scheme based on regular measurements of the beam energy by resonant depolarization of pilot bunches, during physics data taking, is proposed. The design for polarization wigglers, polarimeter and depolarizer is outlined. The $e^\pm$ beam energies will be monitored with a relative precision of $10^{-6}$. The centre-of-mass energy is derived subject to further corrections, related to the beam acceleration, synchrotron radiation and beamstrahlung; these effects are identified and evaluated. Dimuon events $e^+e^- \to \mu^+ \mu^-$, recorded in the detectors, provide with great precision the beam crossing angle, the centre-of-mass energy spread, and the $e^+$ and $e^-$ energy difference. Monitoring methods to minimize absolute error and relative uncertainties are discussed. The impact on the physics measurements is given. High-power multicycle THz radiation is highly sought after with applications in medicine, imaging, spectroscopy, characterization and manipulation of condensed matter, and could support the development of next-generation compact laser-based accelerators with applications in electron microscopy, ultrafast X-ray sources and sub-femtosecond longitudinal diagnostics. Multicycle THz-radiation can be generated by shooting an appropriate laser through a periodically poled nonlinear crystal, e.g. lithium niobate (PPLN). Unfortunately, the manufacturing processes of PPLNs require substantially strong electric fields $\mathcal{O}(10~kV/mm)$ across the crystal width to locally reverse the polarization domains; this limits the crystal apertures to below 1 cm. Damage threshold limitations of lithium niobate thereby limits the laser power which can be shone onto the crystal, which inherently limits the production of high-power THz pulses. Here we show that in the THz regime, a PPLN crystal can be mechanically constructed in-air by stacking lithium niobate wafers together with 180$^{\circ}$ rotations to each other. The relatively long (mm) wavelengths of the generated THz radiation compared to the small gaps ($\sim$10 $\mu$m) between wafers supports a near-ideal THz transmission between wafers. We demonstrate the concept using a Joule-class laser system with $\sim$50 mm diameter wafers and measure up to 1.3 mJ of THz radiation corresponding to a peak power of $\sim$35 MW, a 50 times increase in THz power compared to previous demonstrations. Our results indicate that high-power THz radiation can be produced with existing and future high-power lasers in a scalable way, setting a course toward multi-gigawatt THz pulses. Moreover the simplicity of the scheme provides a simple way to synthesize waveforms for a variety of applications.

Plasma wakefield accelerators are capable of sustaining gigavolt-per-centimeter accelerating fields, surpassing the electric breakdown threshold in state-of-the-art accelerator modules by 3-4 orders of magnitude. Beam-driven wakefields offer particularly attractive conditions for the generation and acceleration of high-quality beams. However, this scheme relies on kilometer-scale accelerators. Here, we report on the demonstration of a millimeter-scale plasma accelerator powered by laser-accelerated electron beams. We showcase the acceleration of electron beams to 130 MeV, consistent with simulations exhibiting accelerating gradients exceeding 100 GV/m. This miniaturized accelerator is further explored by employing a controlled pair of drive and witness electron bunches, where a fraction of the driver energy is transferred to the accelerated witness through the plasma. Such a hybrid approach allows fundamental studies of beam-driven plasma accelerator concepts at widely accessible high-power laser facilities. It is anticipated to provide compact sources of energetic high-brightness electron beams for quality-demanding applications such as free-electron lasers.

Efficiency of self-optimizing systems is heavily dependent on their optimization strategies, e.g., choosing exact or approximate solver. A choice of such a strategy, in turn, is influenced by numerous factors, such as re-optimization time, size of the problem, optimality constraints, etc. Exact solvers are domain-independent and can guarantee optimality but suffer from scaling, while approximate solvers offer a "good-enough" solution in exchange for a lack of generality and parameter-dependence. In this paper we discuss the trade-offs between exact and approximate optimizers for solving a quality-based software selection and hardware mapping problem from the scalability perspective. We show that even a simple heuristic can compete with thoroughly developed exact solvers under condition of an effective parameter tuning. Moreover, we discuss robustness of the obtained algorithm's configuration. This Letter of Intent describes LUXE (Laser Und XFEL Experiment), an experiment that aims to use the high-quality and high-energy electron beam of the European XFEL and a powerful laser. The scientific objective of the experiment is to study quantum electrodynamics processes in the regime of strong fields. High-energy electrons, accelerated by the European XFEL linear accelerator, and high-energy photons, produced via Bremsstrahlung of those beam electrons, colliding with a laser beam shall experience an electric field up to three times larger than the Schwinger critical field (the field at which the vacuum itself is expected to become unstable and spark with spontaneous creation of electron-positron pairs) and access a new regime of quantum physics. The processes to be investigated, which include nonlinear Compton scattering and nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair production, are relevant to a variety of phenomena in Nature, e.g. in the areas of astrophysics and collider physics and complement recent results in atomic physics. The setup requires in particular the extraction of a minute fraction of the electron bunches from the European XFEL accelerator, the installation of a powerful laser with sophisticated diagnostics, and an array of precision detectors optimised to measure electrons, positrons and photons. Physics sensitivity projections based on simulations are also provided.

Modern particle accelerators and their applications increasingly rely on precisely coordinated interactions of intense charged particle and laser beams. Femtosecond-scale synchronization alongside micrometre-scale spatial precision are essential e.g. for pump-probe experiments, seeding and diagnostics of advanced light sources and for plasma-based accelerators. State-of-the-art temporal or spatial diagnostics typically operate with low-intensity beams to avoid material damage at high intensity. As such, we present a plasma-based approach, which allows measurement of both temporal and spatial overlap of high-intensity beams directly at their interaction point. It exploits amplification of plasma afterglow arising from the passage of an electron beam through a laser-generated plasma filament. The corresponding photon yield carries the spatiotemporal signature of the femtosecond-scale dynamics, yet can be observed as a visible light signal on microsecond-millimetre scales.

Architectures for sparse hierarchical representation learning have recently been proposed for graph-structured data, but so far assume the absence of edge features in the graph. We close this gap and propose a method to pool graphs with edge features, inspired by the hierarchical nature of chemistry. In particular, we introduce two types of pooling layers compatible with an edge-feature graph-convolutional architecture and investigate their performance for molecules relevant to drug discovery on a set of two classification and two regression benchmark datasets of MoleculeNet. We find that our models significantly outperform previous benchmarks on three of the datasets and reach state-of-the-art results on the fourth benchmark, with pooling improving performance for three out of four tasks, keeping performance stable on the fourth task, and generally speeding up the training process., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted as a DLG 2019 workshop paper at KDD 2019

Vortices are topological objects representing the circular motion of a fluid. With their additional degree of freedom, the 'vorticity', they have been widely investigated in many physical systems and different materials for fundamental interest and for applications in data storage and information processing. Vortices have also been observed in non-equilibrium exciton-polariton condensates in planar semiconductor microcavities. There they appear spontaneously or can be created and pinned in space using ring-shaped optical excitation profiles. However, using the vortex state for information processing not only requires creation of a vortex but also efficient control over the vortex after its creation. Here we demonstrate a simple approach to control and switch a localized polariton vortex between opposite states. In our scheme, both the optical control of vorticity and its detection through the orbital angular momentum of the emitted light are implemented in a robust and practical manner.

Unique structural and optical properties of atomically thin two-dimensional semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides enable in principle their efficient coupling to photonic cavities with optical modes volumes close to or below the diffraction limit. Recently, it has become possible to make all-dielectric nano-cavities with reduced mode volumes and negligible non-radiative losses. Here, we realise low-loss high-refractive-index dielectric gallium phosphide (GaP) nano-antennas with small mode volumes coupled to atomic mono- and bilayers of WSe$_2$. We observe a photoluminescence enhancement exceeding 10$^4$ compared with WSe$_2$ placed on planar GaP, and trace its origin to a combination of enhancement of the spontaneous emission rate, favourable modification of the photoluminescence directionality and enhanced optical excitation efficiency. A further effect of the coupling is observed in the photoluminescence polarisation dependence and in the Raman scattering signal enhancement exceeding 10$^3$. We present detailed chemical abundances, radial velocities and orbital parameters for FSR 1758, a recently discovered star cluster in the direction of the Galactic Bulge. High resolution (R~42,000) spectra were obtained using the Magellan/Clay telescope instrumented with MIKE echelle spectrogragh, wavelength range 4900-8700 \AA. Cluster membership was determined using Gaia DR2 proper motions and confirmed with our radial velocity measurements. We find metallicity consistent with previous photometric estimates for this cluster, [Fe/H] = -1.58+-0.03 dex, with a small, 0.08 dex, spread. While other studies have suggested this massive object may be the result of a previous accretion event, our results are consistent with Milky Way Halo globular clusters with characteristic Na-O anti-correlations found for the metal-poor cluster members. The mean radial velocity of the cluster, +226.8+-1.6 km/s with a small velocity dispersion, 4.9+-1.2 km/s, is typical for globular clusters. A workshop, "Probing strong-field QED in electron--photon interactions", was held in DESY, Hamburg in August 2018, gathering together experts from around the world in this area of physics as well as the accelerator, laser and detector technology that underpins any planned experiment. The aim of the workshop was to bring together experts and those interested in measuring QED in the presence of strong fields at and above the Schwinger critical field. The pioneering experiment, E144 at SLAC, measured multi-photon absorption in Compton scattering and $e^+e^-$ pair production in electron--photon interactions but never reached the Schwinger critical field value. With the advances in laser technology, in particular, new experiments are being considered which should be able to measure non-perturbative QED and its transition from the perturbative regime. This workshop reviewed the physics case and current theoretical predictions for QED and even effects beyond the Standard Model in the interaction of a high-intensity electron bunch with the strong field of the photons from a high-intensity laser bunch. The world's various electron beam facilities were reviewed, along with the challenges of producing and delivering laser beams to the interaction region. The maximum energy loss (Bragg peak) located near the end of range is a characteristic feature of ion stopping in matter, which generates an acoustic pulse, if ions are deposited into a medium in adequately short bunches. This so-called ionoacoustic effect has been studied for decades, mainly for astrophysical applications, and it has recently found renewed interest in proton therapy for precise range measurements in tissue. After detailed preparatory studies with 20 MeV protons at the MLL tandem accelerator, ionoacoustic range measurements were performed in water at the upgraded SIS18 synchrotron of GSI with 238U and 124Xe ion beams of energy about 300 MeV/u, and 12C ions of energy about 200 MeV/u using fast beam extraction to get 1 microsecond pulse lengths. Acoustic signals were recorded in axial geometry by standard piezo-based transducers at a 500 kHz mean frequency and evaluated in both the time and frequency domains. The resulting ranges for the different ions and energies were found to agree with Geant4 simulations as well as previous measurements to better than 1%. Given the high accuracy provided by ionoacoustic range measurements in water and their relative simplicity, we propose this new method for stopping power measurements for heavy ions at GeV energies and above. We present a conceptual design for a hybrid laser-to-beam-driven plasma wakefield accelerator. In this setup, the output beams from a laser-driven plasma wakefield accelerator (LWFA) stage are used as input beams of a new beam-driven plasma accelerator (PWFA) stage. In the PWFA stage a new witness beam of largely increased quality can be produced and accelerated to higher energies. The feasibility and the potential of this concept is shown through exemplary particle-in-cell simulations. In addition, preliminary simulation results for a proof-of-concept experiment at HZDR (Germany) are shown.

Movement experience and the coordination of perception and action are the basis of developing body awareness, emotion, motivation and cognition and the sense of self. The four limbs play a key role in the developing sense of body ownership, agency and peripersonal space. Neonatal limb movements were investigated respective processes of self-organization and developing body awareness. Application of symbolic dynamics to kinematic data of radial distance trajectories of the hands and feet determined 16 coordination patterns according to the distance of the effectors to the body center. From time series analysis of occurrence and recurrence of these configurations of 25 movement episodes of 14 infants both characteristics of self-organization as well as features assumed to provide neonates with experiences involved in the development of body awareness were found. With increasing age a shift from configurations with proximal to distal positions suggests a role of the proximal-distal dimension in movement development. We conclude that self-organization in spontaneous movements provides neonates with perceptual body- and self-specifying stimuli involved in developing body awareness and postulate the involvement of emotional and cognitive processes., Comment: 29 pages, 9 figures

It is shown that electron injection into a laser-driven plasma bubble can be manipulated by applying an external magnetic field in the presence of a plasma density gradient. The down-ramp of the density-tailored plasma locally reduces the plasma wave phase velocity, which triggers injection. The longitudinal magnetic field dynamically induces an expanding hole in the electron density distribution at the rear of the wake bubble, which reduces the peak electron velocity in its vicinity. Electron injection is suppressed when the electron velocity drops below the phase velocity, which depends on the size of the density hole. This enables the start and end of electron injection to be independently controlled, which allows generation of sub-femtosecond electron bunches with peak currents of a few kilo-Ampere, for an applied magnetic field of $\sim 10$ Tesla., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

The extreme electromagnetic fields sustained by plasma-based accelerators allow for energy gain rates above 100 GeV/m but are also an inherent source of correlated energy spread. This severely limits the usability of these devices. Here we propose a novel compact concept which compensates the induced energy correlation by combining plasma accelerating stages with a magnetic chicane. Particle-in-cell and tracking simulations of a particular 1.5 m-long setup with two plasma stages show that 5.5 GeV bunches with a final relative energy spread of $1.2\times10^{-3}$ (total) and $5.5\times10^{-4}$ (slice) could be achieved while preserving sub-micron emittance. This at least one order of magnitude below current state-of-the-art and paves the way towards applications such as Free-Electron Lasers.

We present an approach for measuring the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light tailored towards applications in spectroscopy and non-integer OAM values. It is based on the OAM sorting method (Berkhout et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 153601 (2010)). We demonstrate that mixed OAM states and fractional OAM states can be identified using moments of the sorted output intensity distribution and OAM states with integer and non-integer topological charge can be clearly distinguished. Furthermore the difference between intrinsic OAM and total OAM for fractional OAM states is highlighted and the importance of the orientation of the fractional OAM beam is shown. All experimental results show good agreement with simulations. Finally we discuss possible applications of this method for spectroscopy of semiconductor systems such as exciton-polaritons in microcavities., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures
