The critical approach uses case studies instead of using a narrative. The trend away from survey courses and towards problem-oriented studies has raised questions about the interpretation of art. Some professors agree that the critical approach makes sense from an intellectual point of view but some students don't adapt to this method easily.

Yale University Press is to issue a revised and expanded edition of the Pelican History of Art, conceived by Nikolaus Pevsner during the second world war. The first of its 47 volumes were published in 1953 and it has retained considerable influence in the art history world ever since, being credited with a revival of interest in British art. Its tone is apolitical, and it centres on aesthetic discussions of artists and their works without reference to external factors. The present preference, however, is for a variety of critical interpretations which approach their subject from an ideological standpoint, and it may be difficult to marry the two.
