Integrated photonics on Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) substrates is a well developed research field that has already significantly impacted various fields, such as quantum computing, micro sensing devices, biosensing, and high-rate communications. Although quite complex circuits can be made with such technology, everything is based on a few ’building blocks’ which are then combined to form more complex circuits. This review article provides a detailed examination of the state of the art of integrated photonic building blocks focusing on passive elements, covering fundamental principles and design methodologies. Key components discussed include waveguides, fiber-to-chip couplers, edges and gratings, phase shifters, splitters and switches (including y-branch, MMI, and directional couplers), as well as subwavelength grating structures and ring resonators. Additionally, this review addresses challenges and future prospects in advancing integrated photonic circuits on SOI platforms, focusing on scalability, power efficiency, and fabrication issues. The objective of this review is to equip researchers and engineers in the field with a comprehensive understanding of the current landscape and future trajectories of integrated photonic components on SOI substrates with a 220 nm thick device layer of intrinsic silicon.

Integrated photonic platforms have rapidly emerged as highly promising and extensively investigated systems for advancing classical and quantum information technologies, since their ability to seamlessly integrate photonic components within the telecommunication band with existing silicon-based industrial processes offers significant advantages. However, despite this integration facilitating the development of novel devices, fostering fast and reliable communication protocols and the manipulation of quantum information, traditional integrated silicon photonics faces inherent physical limitations that necessitate a challenging trade-off between device efficiency and spatial footprint. To address this issue, researchers are focusing on the integration of nanoscale materials into photonic platforms, offering a novel approach to enhance device performance while reducing spatial requirements. These developments are of paramount importance in both classical and quantum information technologies, potentially revolutionizing the industry. In this review, we explore the latest endeavors in hybrid photonic platforms leveraging the combination of integrated silicon photonic platforms and nanoscale materials, allowing for the unlocking of increased device efficiency and compact form factors. Finally, we provide insights into future developments and the evolving landscape of hybrid integrated photonic nanomaterial platforms.

Aim: This study was designed to recommend strategies to improve prostate patients’ access to radiotherapy treatment in the Brazilian Unified Health System, along with a cost-tool to support radiotherapy care pathways’ lead times and costs. Methods: Data was collected prospectively from patients with prostate cancer receiving radiotherapy in two Brazilian centers to provide data to apply design thinking and process reengineering techniques. The current status of the radiotherapy pathway was determined and the length of time taken for in-hospital activities was measured using data exported from ARIA R . Interviews with patients were used to estimate their waiting periods. This provided the data used to provide recommended strategies and the cost tool based on time-driven activity-based costing. The strategies were classified according to priority. Results: Data from 47 patients were analyzed. The mean interval from diagnosis to start of radiotherapy was 349 days (SD581), and the mean interval from seeking medical attention to starting treatment was 635 days (SD629). Twelve strategies affecting in hospital processes and 11 impacting patients’ care pathways and experiences are recommended, mostly focused on system improvement opportunities. A time-driven activity-based costing monitoring using data extracted from ARIA was coded and can be used by centers as a cost assessment guide. Conclusion: This study uses reengineering and design techniques to introduce priority strategies to allow more efficient and patient-centered radiotherapy.

Lysophosphatidic acid (LPA) is a bioactive phospholipid that acts as an agonist of six G protein-coupled receptors named LPA receptors (LPA1-6). LPA elicits diverse intracellular events and modulates several biological functions, including cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. Overactivation of the LPA–LPA receptor system is reported to be involved in several pathologies, including cancer, neuropathic pain, fibrotic diseases, atherosclerosis, and type 2 diabetes. Thus, LPA receptor modulators may be clinically relevant in numerous diseases, making the identification and pharmacodynamic characterization of new LPA receptor ligands of strong interest. In the present work, label-free dynamic mass redistribution (DMR) assay has been used to evaluate the pharmacological activity of some LPA1 and LPA2 standard antagonists at the recombinant human LPA1 and LPA2 receptors. These results are compared to those obtained in parallel experiments with the calcium mobilization assay. Additionally, the same experimental protocol has been used for the pharmacological characterization of the new compound CHI. KI 16425, RO 6842262, and BMS-986020 behaved as LPA1 inverse agonists in DMR experiments and as LPA1 antagonists in calcium mobilization assays. Amgen compound 35 behaved as an LPA2 antagonist, while Merck compound 20 from WO2012028243 was detected as an LPA2 inverse agonist using the DMR test. Of note, for all the compounds, similar potency values were estimated by DMR and calcium assay. The new compound CHI was found to be an LPA1 inverse agonist, but with potency lower than that of the standard compounds. In conclusion, we have demonstrated that DMR assay can be successfully used to characterize LPA1 and LPA2 ligands. Compared to the classical calcium mobilization assay, DMR offers some advantages, in particular allowing the identification of inverse agonists. Finally, in the frame of this study, a new LPA1 inverse agonist has been identified.

The present study aimed at assessing the effects of combining 20 mg/kg S(+) ketamine with 25 μg/kg dexmedetomidine and 0.4 mg/kg butorphanol on the physiological parameters and anesthetic recovery time and score of eight captive scarlet macaw (Ara macao) specimens. These specimens were captured at the Marabá Zoobotanic Foundation (Fundação Zoobotânica de Marabá), Pará, using butterfly and mist nets, and subsequently subjected to the proposed protocol. The following physiological parameters were evaluated: heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), saturation of peripheral oxygen (SpO2), body temperature (BT), and non-invasive blood pressure 5 min after drug administration (M0) and every 10 min thereafter (M1‒M5), with a total of 55 min of analysis of anesthetic effects. Glycemia was measured 5 min after drug administration and every 30 min thereafter. Anesthetic induction and recovery times were also determined. Among the parameters evaluated in this study, both HR and BT significantly decreased throughout the anesthetic period, with the lowest levels at 55 min after drug administration (M5). In contrast, RR did not significantly differ, and all animals remained stable, maintaining an RR close to a mean of 20 ± 8 cpm. Throughout the anesthetic period, SpO2 was 92 ± 5%, with no significant difference. The birds remained under spontaneous ventilation and without oxygen supplementation. Systolic, diastolic, and mean blood pressures remained stable, with no significant differences in any of these measurements. At M0 and M3, the glycemia decreased slightly, albeit with no significant difference justifying an adverse effect or even hypoglycemia. The anesthetic induction time, from M0 to decubitus, was 2.4 ± 0.7 min. The anesthetic recovery time, from M0 to effortless bipedal position and adequate phalangeal flexion, was 99.3 ± 32.4 min. The sedation was assessed as intense, and the anesthetic recovery was rated excellent in 62.5% and good in 37.5% of the animals.

As atividades extensionistas possibilitam a aproximação da universidade com a comunidade externa, articulando teoria e prática, ensino e pesquisa. Durante pandemias que obrigam ao afastamento social, alguns projetos de extensão ficam comprometidos, porque dependem do contato entre as pessoas. O trabalho que apresentamos tem como objetivo relatar as atividades desenvolvidas em um projeto de extensão em Pedagogia Hospitalar em uma Faculdade de Educação de uma universidade pública mineira, durante os anos de 2020 e 2021, em situação pandêmica derivada do COVID-19 e consequente afastamento social. Utilizaram-se como referencial teórico estudos de autoras que debatem a temática da Pedagogia Hospitalar, entre elas Rejane Fontes, Ercília de Paula e Giuseppinna Sandroni. Metodologicamente, apresentamos aqui processos e procedimentos adotados na organização e no funcionamento do grupo de extensão no período. Os resultados demonstram que a proposta efetivada colaborou com o aprendizado das discentes envolvidas, contribuiu indiretamente com as crianças hospitalizadas e promoveu intervenções na comunidade externa, como previsto, seguindo metas e objetivos. During pandemics that force social distancing, some extension projects are compromised because they depend on contact between people. The aim of this paper is to report on the activities developed in an extension project in Hospital Pedagogy at a Faculty of Education of a public university in Minas Gerais during the years 2020 and 2021, in a pandemic situation resulting from COVID-19 and consequent social distancing. As a theoretical reference, we used authors who debate the theme of Hospital Pedagogy, such as Rejane Fontes, Ercília de Paula and Giuseppinna Sandroni. Methodologically, we present the processes and procedures adopted in the organization and operation of the extension group during the period. The results show that the proposal collaborated with the learning of the students involved, contributed indirectly to the hospitalized children, and promoted interventions in the external community, as planned, following goals and objectives.
