ABSTRACT: Recently, many studies have assessed the carbon footprint of bovine milk production. However, due to the complexity of life cycle assessment, most studies have analyzed research farms or “representative” farms, which do not capture farm variability. Furthermore, the lack of consistency in most studies means that we can seldom compare the footprint between different countries. To address this issue, we performed a systematic review of the literature, removing inconsistencies in life cycle assessment papers, namely the functional unit, allocation to milk, and global warming potential. We analyzed papers that accounted for many farms to address the variability of production systems within the countries. We found 21 papers from 19 countries; footprint recalculations were necessary for 16 papers. New Zealand, Uruguay, the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States had a footprint 2 kg CO2e·kg−1 fat- and protein-corrected milk. The change in functional unit resulted in a small effect on the final footprint, whereas the global warming potential change was dependent in on the greenhouse gas profile for each country. Countries where milk is produced mainly as a pasture-based system had most of their footprint (>50%) associated with the emission of methane from enteric fermentation, whereas other countries (especially from Europe and North America) had a significant share of emissions from manure management, feed production, and fertilizer use. This different greenhouse gas profile allow decision makers to tailor mitigation options specific for each country. The choice of the allocation method had a strong influence in the final footprint. We suggest that for future studies, authors adhere to the International Dairy Federation guidelines. When this is not possible, we suggest a set of extra information to be reported, allowing recalculations as done in this review.

Abstract Background Funds for community-based management of acute malnutrition (CMAM) programs are short-term in nature. CMAM programs are implemented in countries with weak policies and health systems and are primarily funded by donors. Beyond operational expansion, their institutionalisation and alignment with governments’ priorities are poorly documented. The study aimed to identify pathway opportunities and approaches for horizontal and vertical scaling up of CMAM programs in South Sudan. Methods The study was conducted in South Sudan between August and September 2021 using an online qualitative survey with 31 respondents from policy and implementing organisations. The Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance (RE-AIM) framework guided the study’s design. It was self-administered through the Qualtrics platform. We used Qualitative Content Analysis supported by the Nvivo coding process. A deductive a priori template of codes approach was complemented by a data-driven inductive approach to develop the second level of interpretive understanding. Results Findings from the study demonstrate that the emphasis of CMAM programs was horizontal scaling up, characterised by geographic distribution and coverage as well as operational expansion. Main challenges have included unsustainable funding models, the inadequacy of existing infrastructure, high operational costs, cultural beliefs, and access-related barriers. Factor impacting access to CMAM programs have been geographical terrains, safety, and security concerns. Vertical scaling up, which emphasises institutional and ownership strengthening through a sound policy, regulatory, and fiscal environment, received relatively little attention. Nutrition supplies are not part of the government’s essential drug list and there is limited or no budgetary allocation for nutrition programs by the government in national budgets and fiscal strategies. Factors constraining vertical scalability have included weak government systems and capacity, a lack of advocacy and lobbying opportunities, and an apparent lack of exits strategies. Conclusion Addressing the scalability problems of CMAM programs in South Sudan demands a delicate balancing act that prioritises both horizontal and vertical scalability. Government and political leadership that harness multidisciplinary and multi-sectoral coordination are required. There is a need to increase policy commitment to malnutrition and associated budgetary allocation, emphasise local resource mobilisation, and ensure financial sustainability of integrating CMAM programs into the existing health and welfare system.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
Astrophysical sources of gravitational waves, such as binary neutron star and black hole mergers or core-collapse supernovae, can drive relativistic outflows, giving rise to non-thermal high-energy emission. High-energy neutrinos are signatures of such outflows. The detection of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from common sources could help establish the connection between the dynamics of the progenitor and the properties of the outflow. We searched for associated emission of gravitational waves and high-energy neutrinos from astrophysical transients with minimal assumptions using data from Advanced LIGO from its first observing run O1, and data from the ANTARES and IceCube neutrino observatories from the same time period. We focused on candidate events whose astrophysical origin could not be determined from a single messenger. We found no significant coincident candidate, which we used to constrain the rate density of astrophysical sources dependent on their gravitational wave and neutrino emission processes., Comment: 20 pages, 2 figures

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
KM3NeT will be a network of deep-sea neutrino telescopes in the Mediterranean Sea. The KM3NeT/ARCA detector, to be installed at the Capo Passero site (Italy), is optimised for the detection of high-energy neutrinos of cosmic origin. Thanks to its geographical location on the Northern hemisphere, KM3NeT/ARCA can observe upgoing neutrinos from most of the Galactic Plane, including the Galactic Centre. Given its effective area and excellent pointing resolution, KM3NeT/ARCA will measure or significantly constrain the neutrino flux from potential astrophysical neutrino sources. At the same time, it will test flux predictions based on gamma-ray measurements and the assumption that the gamma-ray flux is of hadronic origin. Assuming this scenario, discovery potentials and sensitivities for a selected list of Galactic sources and to generic point sources with an $E^{-2}$ spectrum are presented. These spectra are assumed to be time independent. The results indicate that an observation with $3\sigma$ significance is possible in about six years of operation for the most intense sources, such as Supernovae Remnants RX\,J1713.7-3946 and Vela Jr. If no signal will be found during this time, the fraction of the gamma-ray flux coming from hadronic processes can be constrained to be below 50\% for these two objects., Comment: 32 pages, 9 figures, submitted to Astroparticle Physics

Quantum Physics - Abstract
We study an entanglement transfer protocol in a two-leg ladder spin-1/2 chain in the presence of disorder. In the regime where on-site energies and the intrachain couplings follow aproximately constant proportions locally, we set up a scheme for high-fidelity state transfer via a disorder-protected subspace wherein fluctuations in the parameters do not depend on the global disorder of the system, accounted by $W$. Moreover, we find that the leakage of information from that subspace is actually suppressed upon increasing $W$ and thus the transfer fidelity, evaluated through the entanglement concurrence at the other end of the chain, builds up with the disorder strength., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures; comments welcome

Physics - Space Physics - Abstract
We present Rosetta observations from comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko during the impact of a coronal mass ejection (CME). The CME impacted on 5-6 Oct 2015, when Rosetta was about 800 km from the comet nucleus, \textcolor{black}{and 1.4 AU from the Sun}. Upon impact, the plasma environment is compressed to the level that solar wind ions, not seen a few days earlier when at 1500 km, now reach Rosetta. In response to the compression, the flux of suprathermal electrons increases by a factor of 5-10 and the background magnetic field strength increases by a factor of $\sim$2.5. The plasma density increases by a factor of 10 and reaches 600 cm$^{-3}$, due to increased particle impact ionisation, charge exchange and the adiabatic compression of the plasma environment. We also observe unprecedentedly large magnetic field spikes at 800 km, reaching above 200 nT, which are interpreted as magnetic flux ropes. We suggest that these could possibly be formed by magnetic reconnection processes in the coma as the magnetic field across the CME changes polarity, or as a consequence of strong shears causing Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities in the plasma flow. Due to the \textcolor{black}{limited orbit of Rosetta}, we are not able to observe if a tail disconnection occurs during the CME impact, which could be expected based on previous remote observations of other CME-comet interactions., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
The existence of diffuse Galactic neutrino production is expected from cosmic ray interactions with Galactic gas and radiation fields. Thus, neutrinos are a unique messenger offering the opportunity to test the products of Galactic cosmic ray interactions up to energies of hundreds of TeV. Here we present a search for this production using ten years of ANTARES track and shower data, as well as seven years of IceCube track data. The data are combined into a joint likelihood test for neutrino emission according to the KRA$_\gamma$ model assuming a 5 PeV per nucleon Galactic cosmic ray cutoff. No significant excess is found. As a consequence, the limits presented in this work start constraining the model parameter space for Galactic cosmic ray production and transport., Comment: 5 figures

One of the main objectives of the ANTARES telescope is the search for point-like neutrino sources. Both the pointing accuracy and the angular resolution of the detector are important in this context and a reliable way to evaluate this performance is needed. In order to measure the pointing accuracy of the detector, one possibility is to study the shadow of the Moon, i.e. the deficit of the atmospheric muon flux from the direction of the Moon induced by the absorption of cosmic rays. Analysing the data taken between 2007 and 2016, the Moon shadow is observed with $3.5\sigma$ statistical significance. The detector angular resolution for downward-going muons is 0.73$^{\circ}\pm0.14^{\circ}.$ The resulting pointing performance is consistent with the expectations. An independent check of the telescope pointing accuracy is realised with the data collected by a shower array detector onboard of a ship temporarily moving around the ANTARES location., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
The results of three different searches for neutrino candidates, associated with the IceCube-170922A event or from the direction of TXS 0506+056, by the ANTARES neutrino telescope are presented. The first search refers to the online follow-up of the IceCube alert; the second is based on the standard time-integrated method employed by the Collaboration to search for point-like neutrino sources; the third uses the information from the IceCube time-dependent analysis reporting a bursting activity centered on December 13, 2014, as input for an ANTARES time-dependent analysis. The online follow-up and the time-dependent analysis yield no events related to the source. The time-integrated study performed over a period from 2007 to 2017 fits 1.03 signal events, which corresponds to a p-value of 3.4% (not considering trial factors). Only for two other astrophysical objects in our candidate list, a smaller p-value had been found. When considering that 107 sources have been investigated, the post-trial p-value for TXS 0506+056 corresponds to 87%.

In classical mechanics, external constraints on the dynamical variables can be easily implemented within the Lagrangian formulation. Conversely, the extension of this idea to the quantum realm, which dates back to Dirac, has proven notoriously difficult due to the noncommutativity of observables. Motivated by recent progress in the experimental control of quantum systems, we propose a framework for the implementation of quantum constraints based on the idea of work protocols, which are dynamically engineered to enforce the constraints. As a proof of principle, we consider the dynamical mean-field approach of the many-body quantum spherical model, which takes the form of a quantum harmonic oscillator plus constraints on the first and second moments of one of its quadratures. The constraints of the model are implemented by the combination of two work protocols, coupling together the first and second moments of the quadrature operators. We find that such constraints affect the equations of motion in a highly nontrivial way, inducing nonlinear behavior and even classical chaos. Interestingly, Gaussianity is preserved at all times. A discussion concerning the robustness of this approach to possible experimental errors is also presented.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
In the past decade, a new class of bright transient radio sources with millisecond duration has been discovered. The origin of these so-called Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) is still a great mystery despite the growing observational efforts made by various multi-wavelength and multi-messenger facilities. So far, many models have been proposed to explain FRBs but neither the progenitors nor the radiative and the particle acceleration processes at work have been clearly identified. In this paper, the question whether some hadronic processes may occur in the vicinity of the FRB source is assessed. If so, FRBs may contribute to the high energy cosmic-ray and neutrino fluxes. A search for these hadronic signatures has been done using the ANTARES neutrino telescope. The analysis consists in looking for high-energy neutrinos, in the TeV-PeV regime, spatially and temporally coincident with the detected FRBs. Most of the FRBs discovered in the period 2013-2017 were in the field of view of the ANTARES detector, which is sensitive mostly to events originating from the Southern hemisphere. From this period, 12 FRBs have been selected and no coincident neutrino candidate was observed. Upper limits on the per burst neutrino fluence have been derived using a power law spectrum, $\rm{\frac{dN}{dE_\nu}\propto E_\nu^{-\gamma}}$, for the incoming neutrino flux, assuming spectral indexes $\gamma$ = 1.0, 2.0, 2.5. Finally, the neutrino energy has been constrained by computing the total energy radiated in neutrinos assuming different distances for the FRBs. Constraints on the neutrino fluence and on the energy released are derived from the associated null results., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
We have investigated the local low-energy excitations in CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$, a material discussed recently in the framework of strongly correlated Weyl semimetals, by means of Ce $M_5$ resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The availability of both $^2$F$_\frac{5}{2}$ and $^2$F$_\frac{7}{2}$ excitations of the Ce $4f^1$ configuration in the spectra allows for the determination of the crystal-electric field parameters that explain quantitatively the temperature dependence and anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility. The absence of an azimuthal dependence in the spectra indicates that all crystal-electric field states are close to being rotational symmetric. We show further that the non-negligible impact of the $\check A_6^0$ parameter on the ground state of CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$ leads to a reduction of the magnetic moment due to multiplet intermixing. The RIXS results are consistent with inelastic neutron scattering (INS) data and are compared to the predictions from \textsl{ab-initio} based electronic structure calculations., Comment: 9 pages and 7 figures, submitted

Quantum Physics ,Condensed Matter - Statistical Mechanics - Abstract
Mobility edge transitions from localized to extended states have been observed in two and three dimensional systems, for which sound theoretical explanations have also been derived. One-dimensional lattice models have failed to predict their emergence, offering no clues on how to actually probe this phenomenon in lower dimensions. This work reports results for a class of tight-binding models with electron-mass position dependence, for which localized-extended wave function transitions can be identified. We show that it is possible to control the density of localized and extended states by tuning the transition-related parameter for a continuous range of energy values. Mathematically exact results for extended or localized states are derived in two extreme conditions of this parameter, as well as an exact energy value for the mobility edge transition in the intermediate regime. Our framework provides a clear point of view on the phenomena and can also be harnessed for setting up experiments to probe to precisely evaluate the associated mobility edges using state-of-the-art technology., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics - Abstract
Cherenkov light induced by radioactive decay products is one of the major sources of background light for deep-sea neutrino telescopes such as ANTARES. These decays are at the same time a powerful calibration source. Using data collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope from mid 2008 to 2017, the time evolution of the photon detection efficiency of optical modules is studied. A modest loss of only 20% in 9 years is observed. The relative time calibration between adjacent modules is derived as well.

Condensed Matter - Soft Condensed Matter - Abstract
When a material surface is functionalized so as to acquire some type of order, functionalization of which soft condensed matter systems have recently provided many interesting examples, the modeller faces an alternative. Either the order is described on the curved, physical surface where it belongs, or it is described on a flat surface that is unrolled as pre-image of the physical surface under a suitable height function. This paper proposes a general method that pursues the latter avenue by lifting whatever order tensor is deemed appropriate from a flat to a curved surface. To produce a specific application, we specialize this method to nematic shells, for which it also provides a simple, but convincing interpretation of the outcomes of some molecular-dynamics experiments on ellipsoidal shells.

We discuss the quantum Hall effect on a single-layer graphene in the framework of noncommutative (NC) phase space. We find it induces a shift in the Hall resistivity. Furthermore, comparison with experimental data reveals an upper bound on the magnitude of the momentum NC parameter $\eta$ in about $\sqrt{\eta}\leq 2.5 \, \mathrm{eV}/c$., Comment: 7 pages

The distributions of migratory species in the ocean span local, national and international jurisdictions. Across these ecologically interconnected regions, migratory marine species interact with anthropogenic stressors throughout their lives. Migratory connectivity, the geographical linking of individuals and populations throughout their migratory cycles, influences how spatial and temporal dynamics of stressors affect migratory animals and scale up to influence population abundance, distribution and species persistence. Population declines of many migratory marine species have led to calls for connectivity knowledge, especially insights from animal tracking studies, to be more systematically and synthetically incorporated into decision-making. Inclusion of migratory connectivity in the design of conservation and management measures is critical to ensure they are appropriate for the level of risk associated with various degrees of connectivity. Three mechanisms exist to incorporate migratory connectivity into international marine policy which guides conservation implementation: site-selection criteria, network design criteria and policy recommendations. Here, we review the concept of migratory connectivity and its use in international policy, and describe the Migratory Connectivity in the Ocean system, a migratory connectivity evidence-base for the ocean. We propose that without such collaboration focused on migratory connectivity, efforts to effectively conserve these critical species across jurisdictions will have limited effect.

Abstract Background There is controversy regarding the treatment of symptomatic synovial cysts, specifically, the need for a concomitant fusion when surgical resection of the synovial cysts is required. We present a retrospective review of a series of patients treated for symptomatic synovial cysts of the lumbar region during the last 20 years by a single surgeon, analyzing the current available literature. Methods Retrospective review. The same surgical technique was applied to all patients. Demographic, clinical, surgical data and synovial cyst recurrence rate were recorded. Postoperative results reported by patients were documented according to the McNab score. Results Sixty nine subjects, with mean follow-up of 7.4 years. 62% (43) were female, with a mean 57.8 years at the time of surgery. In 91.3% (63), the primary management was conservative for a minimum period of 3 months. All subjects underwent surgery due to the failure of conservative treatment. The segment most operated on was L4–L5 (63.77%). 91.3% (63) of the sample reported excellent and good and 6 subjects (8.6%) fair or poor results. There was no evidence of synovial cysts recurrence at the operated level. Conclusion In symptomatic synovial cysts, it seems that conservative treatment is only effective in a limited number of patients and in the short term. Thus, the recommendation of a surgical indication should proceed as soon as the conservative management fails to result in significant symptom relief. Based on our results, we recommend, together with the resection of the cyst, the instrumentation of the segment to avoid its recurrence and the management of axial pain.

Obesity ,Lifestyle ,Disadvantage ,Family ,Children ,Weight gain ,Public aspects of medicine ,RA1-1270 - Abstract
Abstract Background Obesity is an increasing health concern in Australia among adult and child populations alike and is often associated with other serious comorbidities. While the rise in the prevalence of childhood obesity has plateaued in high-income countries, it continues to increase among children from disadvantaged and culturally diverse backgrounds. The family environment of disadvantaged populations may increase the risk of childhood obesity through unhealthy eating and lifestyle practices. The Strong Families Trial aims to assess the effectiveness of a mixed behavioural and lifestyle intervention for parents and carers of at-risk populations, i.e. families from culturally diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds, in preventing unhealthy weight gain among children aged 5 to 11 years. Methods Eight hundred families from low socio-economic areas in Greater Western Sydney, NSW, and Melbourne, VIC, will be recruited and randomised into a lifestyle intervention or control group. The intervention comprises 90-minute weekly sessions for 6 weeks (plus two-booster sessions) of an integrated, evidence-based, parenting and lifestyle program that accounts for the influences of family functioning. Primary (anthropometric data) and secondary (family functioning, feeding related parenting, physical activity, consumption of healthy foods, health literacy, family and household costs) outcome measures will be assessed at baseline, immediately following the intervention, and 12 months post-intervention. Discussion This study will elucidate methods for engaging socially disadvantaged and culturally diverse groups in parenting programs concerned with child weight status. Trial Registration This study is registered with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry ( ACTRN12619001019190 ). Registered 16 July 2019.
