Abstract Medium‐to‐high elevation grasslands provide critical services in agriculture and ecosystem stabilization, through high biodiversity and providing food for wildlife. However, these ecosystems face elevated risks of disruption due to predicted soil and climate changes. Separating the effects of soil and climate, however, is difficult in situ, with previous experiments focusing largely on monocultures instead of natural grassland communities. We experimentally exposed model grassland communities, comprised of three species grown on either local or reference soil, to varied climatic environments along an elevational gradient in the European Alps, measuring the effects on species and community traits. Although species‐specific biomass varied across soil and climate, species' proportional contributions to community‐level biomass production remained consistent. Where species experienced low survivorship, species‐level biomass production was maintained through increased productivity of surviving individuals; however, maximum species‐level biomass was obtained under high survivorship. Species responded directionally to climatic variation, spatially separating differentially by plant traits (including height, reproduction, biomass, survival, leaf dry weight, and leaf area) consistently across all climates. Local soil variation drove stochastic trait responses across all species, with high levels of interactions occurring between site and species. This soil variability obscured climate‐driven responses: we recorded no directional trait responses for soil‐corrected traits like observed for climate‐corrected traits. Our species‐based approach contributes to our understanding of grassland community stabilization and suggests that these communities show some stability under climatic variation.

In the recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) applications have gained interest in the field of cardiovascular medical imaging, including positron emission tomography (PET). The use of AI in cardiac PET imaging is to date limited, although first, important results have been shown, overcoming technical issues, improving diagnostic accuracy and providing prognostic information. In this review we aimed to summarize the state-of-the-art regarding AI applications in cardiovascular PET.

Cystoseira sensu lato marine forests, which are among the most productive and diverse systems in rocky intertidal and subtidal habitats of the Mediterranean Sea, are experiencing a widespread decline throughout the basin due to increasing human pressures. Yet it is still unclear whether Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) may represent effective tools for conservation of these important habitat formers and their associated assemblages. Here, we compared the biomass of intertidal stands of Ericaria amentacea (C. Agardh) Molinari and Guiry and their understory assemblages between the no-take zone and control sites in two Mediterranean MPAs. We did not find evidence supporting a significant effect of full protection in increasing the biomass of E. amentacea stands and associated assemblages, except for macroalgae of the understory in one of the investigated MPAs, raising concerns on the potential effectiveness of MPAs in mitigating human impacts on these marine forests. Such findings call for major efforts to implement long-term monitoring programs of protected Cystoseira s.l. forests in order to inform an adaptive management of conservation measures within MPAs and eventually to set active interventions of restoration.

Mangroves are carbon-rich ecosystems that store large quantities of carbon, mostly in soils. Early carbon (C) budgets indicated that >50% of mangrove C fixation was unaccounted for. This ‘missing C’ has now been discovered to be a large release (423 Tg C a−1) of porewater dissolved DIC (dissolved inorganic carbon), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), and total alkalinity (17 TMOL a−1) via lateral export derived from bacterial decomposition of soil organic matter. This large export originates from DIC produced over at least a 1.0–1.5 m soil profile (280–420 Tg C a−1) via decomposition of autochthonous and allochthonous inputs and/or likely mineralization in deep (≥1 m) ancient soils. DOC and DIC export from mangroves equate to 41% and ≈100% of export from the world’s tropical rivers, respectively. A newly revised blue carbon budget for the world’s mangroves indicates a mean ecosystem gross primary production (GPPE) to ecosystem respiration (RE) ratio of 1.35 and a net ecosystem production (NEP) of 794 g C m−2 a−1 (= global NEP of 117 Tg C a−1), reflecting net autotrophy. CORG burial is 5% and 9% of GPPE and NEPE, respectively. Mean RE/GPPE is 0.74 and carbon use efficiency averages 0.57, higher than for tropical humid forests (0.35).

Canopy-forming brown algae support highly productive ecosystems whose decline has been attributed to the interplay of several anthropogenic disturbances. Climate change could have disruptive effects on the biology of these species, but the role of temperature in the development of early life stages is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to assess the response of Ericaria giacconei, a winter-reproducing Southern–Mediterranean endemic species, to thermal stress by testing five temperatures (12, 15, 18, 24, and 28°C) on adults and early stages. Chlorophyll a fluorescence of adult plants was measured at 0, 24, 72, and 120 h on nine fronds in each of the three aquaria per treatment. To assess egg release, zygote settlement, and embryo growth rate, approximately 1,200 receptacles were cultured on six Petri dishes per temperature treatment, and 10 random subsections of 2 ×2 mm were examined in three Petri dishes at 0, 20, 44, and 92 h after fertilization. Adult plants showed a plastic physiological response, and thermal stress had no significant effect on PSII efficiency. Embryos fully developed only at 12 and 15°C. Mortality increased at 18 and 24°C, and no zygotes survived at 28°C. In a scenario of further increasing temperatures, the effects of warming could affect the recruitment of E. giacconei and increase its vulnerability to further stresses. These effects on the survival of early stages, which are the bottleneck for the long-term survival of the species, should be taken into account in conservation and restoration measures to maintain canopy-forming macroalgal populations and associated biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Male fin whales sing using 20 Hz pulses produced in regular patterns of inter-note intervals, but little is known about fin whale swimming behavior while they are singing. Even less is known about fin whales in Hawaiian waters because they have rarely been sighted during surveys and passive acoustic monitoring has been limited to sparse hydrophone systems that do not have localization capabilities. We hypothesized that fin whale kinematics may be related to their singing behavior, or external variables such as time and sea state. To investigate this hypothesis, we analyzed 115 tracks containing 50,034 unique notes generated from passive acoustic recordings on an array of 14 hydrophones from 2011 to 2017 at the U.S. Navy Pacific Missile Range Facility off Kauai, Hawaii. Fin whales swam at an average speed of 1.1 m/s over relatively direct paths. We incorporated the whales' speed and turning angle into hidden Markov models to identify different behavioral states based on the whales' movements. We found that fin whale kinematic behavioral state was related to the vocalization rate (also known as cue rate) and time of day. When cue rate was higher, fin whales were more likely to swim slower and turn more than when cue rate was lower. During the night, fin whales were also more likely to swim slower and turn more than during the day. In addition, we examined whether the presence of singing fin whales was related to time and sea state using generalized additive models. Fin whale track presence was affected by day of the year and song season, and possibly also wind speed and wave height. Although the track kinematics from the fin whale tracks presented here are limited to a subset of whales that are acoustically active, they provide some of the only detailed movements of fin whales in the region and can be compared against fin whale swim speeds in other regions. Understanding how fin whale swimming behavior varies based on their vocalization patterns, time, and environmental factors will help us to contextualize potential changes in whale behavior during Navy training and testing on the range.

Abstract Background Public health agencies are responsible for implementing effective, evidence-based public health programs and policies to reduce the burden of chronic diseases. Evidence-based public health can be facilitated by modifiable administrative evidence-based practices (A-EBPs) (e.g., workforce development, organizational climate), yet little is known about how practitioners view A-EBPs. Thus, the purpose of this qualitative study was to understand state health department practitioners’ perceptions about how A-EBPs are implemented and what facilitators and barriers exist to using A-EBPs. Methods Chronic disease prevention and health promotion program staff who were members of the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors were recruited to participate in telephone interviews using a snowball sampling technique. Interviews were transcribed verbatim, and transcripts were analyzed using a common codebook and the a priori method in NVivo. Results Twenty seven interviews were conducted with practitioners in four states (5–8 interviews per state). All practitioners felt that their work unit culture is positive and that leadership encouraged and expected staff to use evidence-based processes. Participants discussed the provision of trainings and technical assistance as key to workforce development and how leaders communicate their expectations. Access to evidence, partnerships, and funding restrictions were the most commonly discussed barriers to the use of A-EBPs and EBDM. Conclusions Results of this study highlight practitioners’ perspectives on promoting evidence-based public health in their departments. Findings can inform the development and refinement of resources to improve A-EBP use and organizational and leadership capacity of state health departments.

Background: To describe the treatment of patients with great saphenous vein (GSV) incompetence and varicose veins (VVs), utilizing an Automated Microfoam Preparation System (AMPS, Varixio®, VB Devices, Barcelona, Spain). Methods: Adults between January and June 2021 were included. The AMPS system was used for foam preparation. Sclerotherapy treatment followed international recommendations. The primary endpoint was GSV closure rate after 36 months. Results: 164 patients were enrolled. During the 7-day follow-up period, all GSVs showed complete closure, which was maintained at the 1-year mark. No major complications were reported. A cumulative complete GSV recanalization rate of 6.1% and a partial recanalization rate of 26.8% after 36 months were noted. Some patients (9.7%) required additional treatment. A higher BMI was associated with complete recanalization. Conclusion: The AMPS offers an easy-to-use and standardized procedure, potentially enhancing treatment outcomes if compared with manual preparation. Caution is advised when treating obese patients. The aquatic ecotoxicity of three α-amino acid-derived polyamidoamines (PAAs) was studied using zebrafish embryos as a viable vertebrate model organism. The PAAs examined were water-soluble amphoteric polyelectrolytes with a primarily negative charge, which were efficient flame retardants for cotton. The fish embryo acute toxicity test performed with PAA water solutions using 1.5–500 mg L−1 concentrations showed that toxicity did not statistically differ from the control. The survival rates were indeed >90%, even at the highest concentration; the hatching rates were >80%; and the numbers of morphological defects were comparable to those of the control. Tests using transgenic zebrafish lines indicated that the numbers of microscopic vascular and musculoskeletal defects were comparable to the control, with one random concentration showing doubled alterations. Sensory–motor tests in response to visual and tactile stimuli were also performed. In the presence of PAAs, embryos exposed to alternating light/dark cycles showed an insignificant mobility reduction during the dark phase. Touch-evoked response tests revealed a mild effect of PAAs on the neuromotor system at concentrations > 10 mg L−1. The cystine/glycine copolymer at 100 mg L−1 exhibited the greatest effect. Overall, the studied PAAs showed a minimal impact on aquatic systems and should be further considered as promising ecofriendly materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Six differently charged amphoteric polyamidoamines, synthesized by the polyaddition of N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide to alanine, leucine, serine, arginine (M-ARG), glutamic acid (M-GLU) and a glycine/cystine mixture, were screened for their short-term phytotoxicity using a seed germination test. Lepidium sativum L. seeds were incubated in polyamidoamine water solutions with concentrations ranging from 0.156 to 2.5 mg mL−1 at 25 ± 1 °C for 120 h. The seed germination percentage (SG%), an indicator of acute toxicity, and both root and shoot elongation, related to plant maturation, were the considered endpoints. The germination index (GI) was calculated as the product of relative seed germination times relative radical growth. The SG% values were in all cases comparable to those obtained in water, indicating no detectable acute phytotoxicity of the polyamidoamines. In the short term, the predominantly positively charged M-ARG proved to be phytotoxic at all concentrations (GI < 0.8), whereas the predominantly negatively charged M-GLU proved to be biostimulating at intermediate concentrations (GI > 1) and slightly inhibitory at 2.5 mg mL−1 (0.8 < GI < 1). Overall, polyamidoamine phytotoxicity could be correlated to charge distribution, demonstrating the potential of the test for predicting and interpreting the eco-toxicological behavior of water-soluble polyelectrolytes. Background: Lymph-nodal prostate cancer oligometastases are differently treated according to their site: pelvic are locoregional lymph nodes; instead, para-aortic lymph nodes are considered as distant metastases. The aim of the study was a comparison between para-aortic and pelvic oligometastases treated with stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). Methods: This is a retrospective analysis. De novo metastatic or extra-nodal disease were excluded. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed; the pattern of recurrence was also evaluated. A propensity score matching (PSM) was applied to create comparable cohorts. The primary end-point was the progression-free survival (PFS). The secondary end-points were biochemical relapse-free survival (BRFS), ADT-free survival (ADTFS), polymetastases-free survival (PMFS), local progression-free survival (LPFS), and pattern of relapse. Results: In total, 240 lymph-nodal oligometastases in 164 patients (127 pelvic and 37 para-aortic) were treated. The median PFS was 20 and 11 months in pelvic and para-aortic patients, respectively (p = 0.042). The difference was not confirmed in the multivariate analysis (p = 0.06). The median BRFS was 16 and 9 months, respectively, in the pelvic and para-aortic group (p = 0.07). No statistically significant differences for ADTFS or PMFS were detected. The cumulative 5-year LPFS was 90.5%. In PSM, no statistically significant differences for all the study end-points were detected. Conclusions: Patients affected by para-aortic disease might have a PFS comparable to pelvic disease; local control is high in both cohorts. Our results also support the use of SBRT for para-aortic metastases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
