The relevance of the building sector in the global energy use as well as in the global carbon emissions makes the improvement of the overall energy performance of existing buildings an important part of the actions to mitigate climate changes. Regardless of this potential, large-scale building renovation has been found hard to trigger, with present standards mainly focused on new buildings, not responding effectively to the technical, functional and economic constraints of the existing ones. One of the common problems in the assessment of building renovation scenarios is that only energy savings and costs are normally considered, despite the fact that the investment on energy efficiency yield several benefits beyond the value of saved energy (the so-called co-benefits). To demonstrate and highlight the relevance of co-benefits achieved in the renovation process, a Portuguese neighbourhood with nearly 17.000 inhabitants that has been recently renovated is analysed in search for evidences of the existence of these co-benefits and their relevance. Indoor temperature, humidity and noise insulation were monitored and a survey to the residents was carried out. Results clear indicate the achievement of co-benefits at the building level such as increased user comfort and reduced problems with building physics (mould and water infiltrations), but also the elimination of the feeling of gentrification by outside people to the neighbourhood. The analysis demonstrates that the decision-making process canâ t only be based on investment costs and energy savings, being necessary that owners, investors, promoters, but also policy makers adapt their reasoning to include these additional benefits.

Many regulations and initiatives to promote the reduction of the energy consumption and carbon emissions have been implemented in the building sector. However, they are mostly targeted for new buildings. In order to have an effective impact and reach the goals that are being established, it is necessary to act in new but especially in the existing buildings, which correspond to the majority of the European building stock. Building renovation improves the buildings’ energy performance, reducing the carbon emissions related to the operation of the building but the renovation involves adding new materials and technical systems. The production process of these new materials uses energy (embodied energy) and releases carbon emissions. In this sense, after a certain level of energy efficiency, the materials added to the building may have more embodied energy than the energy savings they will lead to. To evaluate the relevance of the embodied energy in building renovation, IEA EBC project Annex 56, developed a methodological framework to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of building renovation solutions which include a life-cycle impact assessment. In this context and using a particular case study, different renovation solutions are compared with and without considering the embodied energy. The results have shown that the embodied energy do not have a major impact on the evaluation of the cost-effectiveness of the renovation solutions, but as the renovation approach gets closer to zero non-renewable energy level, its relevance increases.

The social and environmental urgency of large-scale integrated retrofitting of the European residential building stock is widely acknowledged and supported by all Member States. However, the European building sector is currently still not able to offer an integral solution for deep renovation toward nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) for reasonable costs. MORE-CONNECT project aims to tackle this issue by developing cost optimal solutions to renovate buildings towards nZEB. In this project, the optimal solutions include the development of prefabricated, multifunctional renovation elements for the total building envelope (façade and roof) and installation/building services. This paper presents the first stage of the project, namely the analysis and comparison of three scenarios following the current national requirements in Portugal i) 80% reduction of the current primary energy consumption of the building, ii) cost optimal solution (nZEB) and iii) net zero energy (NZEB). The optimization of the building envelope will be the main driver for the three scenarios as well as the inclusion of renewable energy strategies. Overall, results suggest that it is possible to achieve cost-effective solutions for the renovation of Portuguese residential buildings. Introduction: Malignancy management in renal transplant recipients is becoming a major factor affecting long‑term patient survival. Thus, we intended to evaluate both incidence and prognosis of malignant diseases following renal transplantation at a single centre in Portugal. Methods: We studied retrospectively the 2,358 patients who underwent kidney transplantation (KT) between 1983 and 2014. Apart from descriptive analysis, both demographic and clinical characteristics of cancer and non‑cancer cancer patients were compared. Results: During a median follow‑up of 118 (IQR 57‑179) months, 139 patients (5.8%) developed 158 de novo malignancies, with a median time from KT to diagnosis of 76..5 (IQR 21.0‑132.0) months. When compared to non‑cancer patients, they were older at KT date, had longer graft survival and a lower living donor recipients’ prevalence. As for post-transplant malignancies analysis, the most common were non‑cutaneous non‑lymphomatous cancers (49.4%, n=78), skin cancers (35.4%, n=56) and post‑transplant lymphoproliferative disorders (9.5%, n=15). Considering specific diagnosis, squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma with 17.1% and 16.5% respectively, and non‑Hodgkin lymphomas with 7.6%, were the most frequent. Global mortality among cancer patients was 36.0%, with a median time of 9.7 (IQR 1.9‑17.5) months from time of diagnosis to death. As for survival analysis, cancer patient survival was significantly lower while censored graft survival was significantly higher in this group. Conclusion: Incidence and characteristics of malignancy following renal transplantation in our unit are similar to those globally described, despite some traits probably a result of specific ethnic and environmental characteristics. info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersion

The Portuguese socio-economic context of the last decades of XX century led to a great investment by the construction industry in new construction. This tendency continued even after the number of buildings had largely overcome the number of families. Nowadays, there are in Portugal more 45% of dwellings than families. On the other hand, the existing buildings were several times built without a proper consideration of important issues, such as thermal comfort, acoustic comfort, ventilation needs, natural lighting, among many others. For these reasons, many Portuguese buildings have big retrofitting needs. This study intends to present a statistical analysis of the Portuguese residential buildings retrofitting needs. Additionally, it was intended to study in what extent the retrofitting works currently being carried out overcome these needs. ISBN 978-85-92631-00-0, Glazing contributes significantly to heat transfer between outdoor and indoor spaces and these surfaces act directly on daylighting and thermal comfort. Based on these aspects, spectrophotometric characterization of double glazings was accomplished to study components for a modular facade system for the climate of Portugal. This study focused on results of spectrophotometric measurements of optical behavior in the different solar spectrum intervals ultraviolet, visible and near infrared, specifically transmittance of two types of double glazings. The first double glazing presents a single pane of green glass with a solar control foil and a single pane of a glass with an extremely low-emissivity foil; the second one presents a single pane of self-cleaning glass and a float clear annealed glass. Results show the percentage of transmission to spectrum intervals, which enabled the verification of the efficiency of the glazing in terms of daylighting and the correlation to thermal performance. O sector dos edifícios é o maior consumidor de energia final na União Europeia. Isto deve-se ao facto de a maioria dos edifícios apresentar um fraco desempenho térmico da envolvente. O parque edificado da União Europeia é, na sua maioria, anterior a 1960, de uma época pautada pela ausência de regulamentos de eficiência energética e em que as questões relacionadas com o consumo de energia e as emissões de carbono não assumiam a premência que apresentam na atualidade. A reabilitação energética apresenta-se hoje como a ferramenta mais eficaz para fazer face ao desafio de melhorar o desempenho energético do parque edificado existente. Servirá não só para atingir as ambiciosas metas de redução de consumo energético até 2020 e 2050 como para garantir um ambiente construído de qualidade e sustentável. Com taxas de construção nova muito reduzidas, a reabilitação é uma solução alternativa que apresenta inúmeras vantagens e é cada vez mais reconhecida como o futuro no sector dos edifícios. A revisão da diretiva Europeia relativa ao desempenho energético dos edifícios introduziu o conceito de edifício de necessidades quase nulas de energia (nZEB) e a obrigatoriedade de todos os edifícios novos após 2020 serem nZEB. Da mesma forma, também o conceito deverá ser aplicado aos edifícios existentes, adaptando-os para nZEB, através da reabilitação energética. Estes edifícios apresentam um desempenho energético muito elevado, sendo que as reduzidas necessidades energéticas que apresentam devem ser asseguradas em grande parte por energia proveniente de fontes renováveis, produzida no local ou nas proximidades. Complementarmente, as soluções nZEB devem obedecer a critérios de racionalidade económica. Para tal, a Comissão Europeia desenvolveu um quadro metodológico aplicável a todos os Estados Membros, que permite a identificação e análise dos níveis ótimos de rentabilidade do desempenho energético dos edifícios. O presente estudo enquadra-se no âmbito do projeto Europeu More-Connect que se centra no desenvolvimento de elementos modulares prefabricados de reabilitação energética para atingir edifícios nZEB. A revisão da diretiva europeia relativa ao desempenho energético dos edifícios (EPBD recast), publicada em 19 de maio de 2010, introduziu a obrigatoriedade de todas as novas construções a erigir após 31 de dezembro de 2020 serem edifícios de necessidades quase nulas de energia (nZEB). Devem ainda todos os Estados Membros preparar planos que permitam também aumentar o número de edifícios existentes que se adaptem ao mesmo conceito. De acordo com a diretiva, estes edifícios apresentam um desempenho energético muito elevado e a reduzida energia de que necessitam deverá ser assegurada em grande parte por energia de fontes renováveis, incluindo energia de fontes renováveis produzida no local ou nas proximidades. A significativa indefinição dos vários parâmetros que compõem a redação dada pela diretiva ao conceito deverá ser clarificada por cada Estado Membro. A transposição da diretiva para a regulamentação nacional foi realizada através do regulamento de desempenho energético dos edifícios de habitação, no qual os edifícios com necessidades quase nulas de energia são definidos como sendo aqueles dotados de uma componente eficiente compatível com os resultados decorrentes da aplicação da metodologia de custo ótimo e de formas de captação local de energias renováveis, preferencialmente no edifício ou na parcela de terreno onde está construído, que cubram grande parte do remanescente das necessidades energéticas previstas. Ambas as definições, da diretiva e da regulamentação nacional, apresentam ainda um elevado grau de indefinição, cenário que se verifica repetido em muitos dos restantes Estados Membros da União Europeia. Cumulativamente, as definições não perspetivam qualquer diferenciação entre os edifícios novos e os edifícios existentes, sendo que, para estes últimos, os constrangimentos do ponto de vista técnico e de rentabilidade económica, poderão dificultar de forma relevante a adaptação ao novo conceito. Neste contexto, tendo por base os estudos elaborados para a identificação dos níveis ótimos de rentabilidade do desempenho energético dos edifícios residenciais em Portugal utilizando o quadro metodológico comparativo desenvolvido pela Comissão Europeia, são identificados os níveis ótimos de rentabilidade dos requisitos energéticos aplicáveis na reabilitação do parque residencial português e explorados os conjuntos de medidas que permitem converter esses edifícios em edifícios com necessidades quase nulas de energia. Estas análises permitem dar um contributo para a futura clarificação da definição de edifícios de necessidades quase nulas de energia, com base em critérios de racionalidade económica.

Following the impact of the climate changes and their causes, buildings proved to be one of the main responsible for the greenhouse effect due to the carbon emissions related with their construction and use. The recent changes in the European regulations, in a tentative to improve buildings energy performance, are mostly suited to new buildings. However, the majority of the building stock has more than twenty years and renovating it, in accordance with the current standards, can lead to difficult and expensive procedures. Considering the main goals of reducing the use of fossil fuels and the related emissions, the use of renewable energy sources offers an alternative to these deep interventions in the buildings envelope. In a search for the right balance between energy conservation and energy efficiency measures and technologies that require the use of renewable energy, IEA EBC launched Annex 56. The main purpose of the project is the development of a methodological framework that allows comparing renovation scenarios that deeply reduce energy and carbon emissions combining energy efficiency measures and the use of renewable energy. It takes into consideration not only the reduction of the energy use, carbon emissions reductions and costs, but also embodied energy and co-benefits that arise from the renovation procedure. The methodology was applied to a Portuguese case-study that has gone under renovation. The results allow comparing the chosen renovation scenario with other scenarios and justify the option of going beyond the cost optimal solutions in order to have more effective reduction of the carbon emission while still being cost effective.

Na Europa, o uso de energia para arrefecimento dos edifícios residenciais, apesar de ainda apresentar uma relevância limitada, tem vindo a crescer nos últimos anos. Em Portugal, também corresponde a uma pequena fração do total da energia usada em edifícios residenciais, mas a expansão da instalação de sistemas técnicos para fornecer arrefecimento é esperada devido à combinação de diferentes razões. Além disso, cenários para a evolução das temperaturas durante as próximas décadas devido às mudanças climáticas indicam que Portugal será um dos países mais afetados na Europa com um aumento de 3,5 a 4 ° C na temperatura média do ar em 2080. Apesar destes dados que fomentam o crescimento contínuo da instalação de sistemas técnicos para fornecer arrefecimento, Portugal apresenta características naturais que podem ser utilizadas para evitar a sua necessidade.

The concepts about sustainable development include the environmental, economic and social sustainability, emphasizing the quality of life of people and communities. In the case of Brazil, the investment in this field can be considered as being recent in what to the scientific research is concerned. The country does not have a wide database regarding its five regions, capable of covering aspects such as climate, along with the social, cultural and economic reality. Furthermore, in Brazil does not yet exist an assessment tool that may be able to answer to all the country's questions. In this context, this paper aims to contribute to the development of new assessment strategies by introducing the national panorama of certified buildings and taking into account the current conditions and the differences between the five main regions in which the country is divided: Midwest, Northeast, North, South and Southeast. It is intended to help the professionals that work on this subject and to support sustainable development in the Construction Industry in Brazil.

Introduction: End-stage renal disease in children is associated with numerous comorbidities and with age-specific mortality rates approximately 30 times higher than in healthy children. The first kidney transplantation in children was performed successfully in 1954. Surgical advances and new immunosuppressive medications have greatly improved patient’s and graft’s survival in the last years.Aim: Report Centro Hospitalar do Porto experience in pediatric renal transplantation in the last 30 years.Methods: Epidemiological and clinical data of all patients younger than 18 years, transplanted between January 1984 and August 2013, were collected from our database. In order to analyze the transplantation outcome in our center we compare graft survival between decades (1984-89 / 1990-99 / 2000-09 / 2010-13). We also compare graft survival between two age groups of patients (0-10 years ; 11-17 years) at the time of surgery.Results: One hundred thirty-nine patients (58.3% male) underwent 147 renal transplants (6.8% live donors). Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (56.5%) and glomerulonephritis (18.4%) were the major causes of renal disease. Uncensored graft survivals rates at 5, 10, 15 and 20 years were 84.7%, 71.1%, 60.0% and 51.0%, while patient survivals were 97.9%, 95.9%, 94.7% and 94.7% respectively. Graft survival improved over time and the difference between the decades was statistically significant (p=0.004). Despite the better survival in the group of patients older than 11 years, graft’s survival difference between the two age groups was not statistically significant (p=0.697).Conclusion: The results of our hospital are comparable to other international centers. Significant improvement in survival was observed over the time. O sucesso de um sistema produtivo depende indubitavelmente da qualidade das condições de trabalho que proporciona aos trabalhadores que nele colaboram. Nesta perspetiva, a melhoria da produtividade e da competitividade das empresas portuguesas passa, necessariamente, por uma intervenção no sentido da melhoria das condições de trabalho. No nosso País estão legalmente estabelecidas diversas medidas destinadas a promover e garantir a melhoria das condições da segurança e saúde dos trabalhadores nos seus locais de trabalho. Essas medidas estabelecem também os deveres dos trabalhadores e das entidades patronais impondo, em certas condições, a adoção de iniciativas de organização das atividades de prevenção e proteção contra os riscos profissionais. Mas, mesmo estando preconizado e ser considerado fulcral para o desenvolvimento e crescimento empresarial, nem sempre tem merecido a atenção devida pelos empregadores por se tratar, muitas vezes, de um processo moroso e dispendioso. Perante esta realidade, pretendeu-se com este projeto aplicado fazer uma avaliação de riscos profissionais, utilizando para tal o Método de Avaliação de Acidentes de Trabalho (MARAT) para se ter a noção clara de quais são e de que forma os trabalhadores da LIN estão expostos diariamente. A maioria das tarefas potenciam as lesões músculo-esqueléticas devido a movimentos repetitivos e manuseamento manual de cargas houve a necessidade de se avaliar o risco de LMERT (Lesões Músculo-esqueléticas Relacionadas com o Trabalho) utilizando o Método REBA (Rapid Entire Body Assessment). A recolha da informação relativa às LMERT foi realizada através de um questionário que se aplicou aos trabalhadores da lavandaria cujos resultados evidenciaram uma frequência elevada de sintomas músculo-esqueléticos em diferentes zonas anatómicas. Devido ao número de tarefas conclui-se que as posturas que estes profissionais adotam implicam adotar medidas de prevenção, de forma a melhorar as condições de trabalho e favorecer a qualidade de vida dos trabalhadores da lavandaria, pelo que este projeto aplicado apresentadas Propostas Estratégicas na área de Segurança no Trabalho e Ergonomia.

Os ensaios em túnel de vento são uma ferramenta confiável para determinar o efeito da ventilação natural em edifícios. Por meio do presente estudo são analisadas as condições de ventilação de um modelo, de acordo com o posicionamento de módulos de ventilação num sistema de fachadas. Os ensaios foram realizados em túnel de vento, variando a posição dos módulos de ventilação na configuração fachada. Os casos apresentados serão dois, um deles com seis módulos de ventilação posicionados no peitoril da janela (peitoril ventilado) e outro com três módulos de ventilação posicionados acima e abaixo na fachada. Trata-se de um sistema de fachadas móvel e intercambiável, de forma que o mesmo modelo básico fosse utilizado para testar as diferentes possibilidades de ventilação. Medições da velocidade do ar foram obtidas para o interior e exterior do modelo para as diferentes configurações de fachadas, de modo a avaliar o melhor desempenho em relação à ventilação natural. Casos com e sem ventilação cruzada foram considerados para medição da velocidade do ar. Os resultados indicaram que o uso de módulos de ventilação posicionados abaixo do peitoril da janela, formando um peitoril ventilado foi a melhor solução em termos de ventilação natural., Wind tunnel tests are a reliable tool to determine the effect of natural ventilation on buildings. This paper discusses the ventilation conditions of a model, according to the ventilation modules positioning in a façade system. The tests were carried out in a wind tunnel, varying the position of the ventilation modules in the façade configuration. The cases presented were two, one with six ventilation modules positioned below the window-sill (ventilated window-sill), and another with three ventilation modules positioned above and below the façade. The façade system proposed was movable and interchangeable so that the same basic model could be used to test the possibilities for ventilation. Air speed measurements were taken inside and outside the model for the different façades configurations to evaluate the best performance in relation to natural ventilation. Single-sided and Cross ventilation were considered for air speed measurements. The analysis of skeletal muscle mass (SM), either total (TSM) or appendicular (ASM) mass, in the elderly, is important, in order to monitor this component along aging, and these values are more associated with disability when adjusted for height, thus enabling the analysis of total (TSMI) and appendicular muscle mass indexes (ASMI). The purpose of this study was to present standard mean and percentile values of TSM, ASM, TSMI and ASMI, from elderly of São Paulo city, according to gender and age groups. The sample consisted of 1203 elderly, men and women, from the 2006 cohort of the SABE Study: Health, Well-being and Aging, held in São Paulo, Brazil. Variables TSM and ASM were identified by predictive equations, while the respective indexes, by the ratio between the values of SM and height to the squared (in kg.m-2). The mean values and standard deviation of TSM, of women and men, younger and older than 80 years old, were, in kg, 17.7±3.6, 14.4±3.2, 26.9±3.8 and 24.1±2.9, respectively, while the values for ASM were 14.4±2.1, 13.0±2.0, 21.0±2.8 and 19.4±2.3, respectively. When adjusted by height to the square, the values of TSMI were, in kg.m-2, 7.6±1.4, 6.3±1.2, 9.8±1.1 and 8.9±0.9, and the values of ASMI were 6.1±0.7, 5.7±0.7, 7.6±0.8 and 7.2±0.7, respectively. All the variables were correlated among themselves (r>0,84). Men and younger elderly presented higher values, with statistical significance, in relation to their peers, and the differences between age groups were higher among women. A análise da massa muscular (MM) em idosos, seja total (MMT) ou apendicular (MMA), é importante para o acompanhamento deste componente ao longo do envelhecimento, sendo que estes valores são mais associados à incapacidade funcional quando ajustados pela estatura, possibilitando, assim, a análise dos índices de massa muscular total (IMMT) e apendicular (IMMA). O objetivo deste estudo foi apresentar valores normativos, expressos em médias e percentis, de MMT, MMA, IMMT e IMMA, de idosos do município de São Paulo, segundo sexo e grupos etários. A amostra foi composta por 1203 idosos de ambos os sexos, da coorte de 2006 do Estudo SABE: Saúde, Bem-estar e Envelhecimento, realizado no município de São Paulo, Brasil. As variáveis MMT e MMA foram identificadas a partir de equações preditivas, enquanto os respectivos índices, pela razão entre os valores de MM e altura, ao quadrado (em kg.m-2). Os valores médios e os desvios-padrão de MMT, de mulheres e homens, com menos de 80 e 80 anos e mais, foram, em kg, 17,7±3,6, 14,4±3,2, 26,9±3,8 e 24,1±2,9, respectivamente, enquanto os valores de MMA foram 14,4±2,1, 13,0±2,0, 21,0±2,8 e 19,4±2,3, respectivamente. Quando ajustados pela altura, os valores de IMMT foram, em kg.m-2, 7,6±1,4, 6,3±1,2, 9,8±1,1 e 8,9±0,9, e os valores de IMMA foram, 6,1±0,7, 5,7±0,7, 7,6±0,8 e 7,2±0,7, respectivamente. Todas as variáveis apresentaram alta correlação entre si (r>0,84). Homens e idosos mais jovens apresentaram maiores valores, com significância estatística, em relação aos seus pares e as diferenças entre os grupos etários são maiores entre as mulheres.

A urbanização de Vila d’Este é uma das mais importantes urbanizações de “habitação de custos controlados” em Portugal, com um total de 109 edifícios, alojando cerca de 17 mil habitantes. Tendo por base o processo de reabilitação em curso, é realizada uma análise de custos de ciclo de vida. O objetivo é identificar os níveis ótimos de rentabilidade dos requisitos energéticos aplicáveis na reabilitação dos edifícios e em cada um dos seus componentes com relevância no desempenho energético, bem como identificar os níveis de desempenho energético compatíveis com o conceito de edifícios de necessidades quase nulas de energia. Os resultados desta avaliação serão de utilidade relevante para o desenvolvimento do plano nacional para a reabilitação do parque edificado existente como previsto na Diretiva Europeia para o Desempenho Energético dos Edifícios de 2010.

This document reports the importance of the category of consciousness and education for sustainability in the school environment. Education in school has a potential to make the benefits of the building construction visible for society and media, showing to the students, parents and communities how sustainability in built environment could improve the people life in economic, social and environment aspects. Thus, this paper addresses the main events related to sustainability, such as the Stockholm Conference, the Brundtland report, United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) and Agenda 21, until reaching the necessity of the elaboration of Methodologies for environmental assessment of building, and later, the development of the specific methodologies according to the buildings. It is also described some examples of sustainability in schools in Germany, Finland and Italy and what kind of sustainable systems those countries are currently using.

The recast of the energy performance of buildings directive stipulates that by 2020 all new buildings should reach nearly zero energy levels (2019 for buildings owned or occupied by public authorities). Therefore technicians involved in the design, conception and approval of such buildings should be able to understand and apply nearly zero energy buildings (nZEB) concepts both towards new buildings and the refurbishment of existing ones. However the number of architects and engineers that are able to deal with new technologies and standards might not be adequate to the increasing market demand. Additionally, at European Union (EU) level there are differences in commitment to the EU targets and the construction of nZEB. In this context, arose the SouthZEB project, that is an Intelligent Energy Europe (IEE) funded project, that aims to fill this gap and address the need to develop training schemes to professionals involved in nZEB building process, transferring successful practices and knowledge from front runners to target Southern EU countries that are less advanced in this area. This paper presents the project aims and overview.

Nowadays, the sustainability of buildings has an extreme importance. This concept goes towards the European aims of the Program Horizon 2020, which concerns about the reduction of the environmental impacts through such aspects as the energy efficiency and renewable technologies, among others. Sustainability is an extremely broad concept but, in this work, it is intended to include the concept of sustainability in buildings. Within the concept that aims the integration of environmental, social and economic levels towards the preservation of the planet and the integrity of the users, there are, currently, several types of tools of environmental certification that are applicable to the construction industry (LEED, BREEAM, DGNB, SBTool, among others). Within this context, it is highlighted the tool SBTool (Sustainable Building Tool) that is employed in several countries and can be subject to review in institutions of basic education, which are the base for the formation of the critical masses and for the development of a country. The main aim of this research is to select indicators that can be used in a methodology for sustainability assessment (SBTool) of school buildings in Portugal and in Brazil. In order to achieve it, it will also be analyzed other methodologies that already incorporate parameters directly related with the schools environment, such as BREEAM or LEED.

The importance of implementing sustainable practices in buildings is duly proved and understood by the majority of the population. However, its implementation is not yet a reality. Some studies have been performed with the goal of understand this lack of use of sustainable solutions, among building sector stakeholders. The conclusion is that one of the main factors contributing to this is related with economic constraints. Several studies have proven that many sustainable practices correspond to minor costs than traditional practices in a life cycle perspective. However, the building sector stakeholders are not aware of this and do not implement sustainable practices commonly. In this paper a costâ benefit methodology willing to cross this barrier and promote the sustainable practices implementation is presented., Apesar da importância da implementação de práticas sustentáveis estar devidamente comprovada e ser compreendida por grande parte da população, a ampla aplicação e implementação dos conceitos de construção sustentável ainda não é uma realidade. Diversos estudos têm sido realizados com o objetivo de compreender o porquê desta fraca aplicação tendo concluído que um dos principais fatores para tal é o facto de as práticas sustentáveis serem consideradas mais caras. Vários estudos provaram que muitas das medidas de sustentabilidade possuem custos inferiores às tradicionais numa perspetiva do ciclo de vida. Contudo, os profissionais do sector ainda não estão consciencializados deste facto e por isso não implementam medidas de construção sustentável. Neste artigo é apresentada uma metodologia de análise de custoͲbenefício de medidas de reabilitação sustentável, que pretende ultrapassar esta barreira e promover a implementação de práticas sustentáveis.

The Portuguese housing sector experienced a significant growth throughout the 20th century, particularly in the last quarter, after the democratic revolution in 1974. In fact, the number of buildings built between 1970 and 1990 is more than one third of the buildings actually existing in Portugal. Therefore most of them were built before the publication of the first regulation concerning the energy efficiency in buildings. Regarding this scenario, it would be expected that rehabilitation activities would represent most of the current construction activities. However, given some remaining barriers from old social policies, this situation is not observed; actually building retrofitting is the least significant sector, accentuating the degradation level of major part of the Portuguese housing stock. Several studies show that the main problems are found in the buildings envelope elements, such as roofs and façades. Based on this context, the aim of this paper is to introduce some examples of building retrofitting systems that, adapted to the Portuguese main needs and requirements may represent sustainable solutions to overcome the identified needs of Portuguese buildings' envelope.

Buildings are one of the major consumers of energy in Europe. This makes them an important target when aiming to reduce the energy consumptions and carbon emissions. The majority of the European building stock has already some decades and so it needs renovation in order to keep its functionality. Taking advantage of these interventions, the energy performance of the buildings may also be improved. In Portugal the renovation techniques, both regarding energy efficiency measures as well as measures for the use of renewable energy sources, are normally planned at the building scale. It is important to explore the possibility of having large scale interventions, has it has been done in other countries, namely at neighbourhood scale with district energy system in order to optimize the results in terms of costs and environmental impact.

A produção e consumo dos vários tipos de energia são dos grandes responsáveis pelas emissões de gases com efeito de estufa que contribuem para as alterações climáticas. No sentido de reduzir as emissões tendo em vista a mitigação das alterações climáticas, o setor dos edifícios, enquanto um dos grandes consumidores de energia, é um alvo de intervenção importante no que concerne à redução dos consumos e consequentes emissões de CO2. Neste contexto, nos últimos anos a Comissão Europeia tem vindo a publicar Diretivas com um grau de exigência crescente em relação ao desempenho dos edifícios, de modo a torna-los mais eficientes , ainda que de uma forma que seja rentável no ciclo de vida do edifício. De modo a perceber o potencial de melhoria de desempenho energético dos edifícios do parque habitacional português, analisaram-se alguns edifícios representativos do mesmo, com e sem medidas de melhoria de desempenho energético, avaliando a rentabilidade do investimento ao Soluções otimizadas de reabilitação de edifícios residenciais para atingir os nZEB 104 longo do ciclo de vida do edifício. Os resultados permitem verificar que as medidas que têm maior impacto são a alteração dos sistemas de climatização e preparação de águas quentes sanitárias e a melhoria do desempenho das fachadas e coberturas. O presente documento foca-se especificamente nas componentes opacas das fachadas, apresentando os níveis ótimos de rentabilidade para o seu desempenho energético em operações de reabilitação de edifícios existentes de diferentes épocas e em diversas zonas climáticas, e mostrando como estes elementos podem contribuir para a obtenção de edifícios de energia quase-zero.

The building sector is one of the Europeâ s main energy consumer, making buildings an important target for a wiser energy use, improving indoor comfort conditions and reducing the energy consumption. To achieve the European Union targets for energy consumption and carbon reductions it is crucial to act in new, but also in existing buildings, which constitute the majority of the building stock. In existing buildings, the significant improvement of their efficiency requires important investments. Therefore, costs are a major concern in the decision making process and the analysis of the cost effectiveness of the interventions is an important path in the guidance for the selection of the different renovation scenarios. The Portuguese thermal legislation considers the simple payback method for the calculations of the time for the return of the investment. However, this method does not take into consideration inflation, cash flows and cost of capital, as well as the future costs of energy and the building elements lifetime as it happens in a life cycle cost analysis. In order to understand the impact of the economic analysis method used in the choice of the renovation measures, a case study has been analysed using simple payback calculations and life cycle costs analysis. Overall results show that less far-reaching renovation measures are indicated when using the simple payback calculations which may be leading to solutions less cost-effective in a long run perspective.

With the objective of fostering the energy efficiency of the building sector as well as of the integration of renewable energy sources, the adoption of near Zero Energy Buildings ( nZEB) concepts (buildings that have a very high energy performance) in new and in existing buildings, is currently being promoted by the SouthZEB project. This Project, initiated in March 2014, is developing, in 30 months, certified training modules targeted towards engineers, architects, municipality technicians and decision makers in Southern European countries, including Portugal. Training modules definition considers the experience and know-how of the front-runner countries (Austria, UK and Northern Italy) participating in the project, but are also based on the counselling of representatives of the main nZEB stakeholders in each of the Southern European countries partnering the SouthZEB project (Portugal, Italy, Greece and Cyprus), the so-called SouthZEB National Support Groups. This paper, first, elaborates on the nZEB concept and its adoption evolution in Europe. Secondly, it focuses on the need for professional training, which has been a barrier encountered in nZEB progress in Southern European countries. A Comissão Europeia tem criado e atualizado diversas diretivas que promovem a eficiência energética, sendo necessário atuar nos diversos setores de atividade. O sector dos edifícios é preponderante, sendo responsável por cerca de 40% dos consumos finais de energia. Nos edifícios públicos, a melhoria da eficiência pode contribuir para reduzir as despesas assumidas pelos órgãos de poder e melhorar as condições de conforto dos utilizadores. Alguns municípios têm vindo a realizar intervenções de melhoria no parque escolar, não só para proporcionarem melhores condições de conforto aos alunos, mas também para melhorarem o desempenho energético e reduzirem os encargos. Com base no caso de estudo de uma escola básica de tipologia P3, através de uma análise de custos de ciclo de vida, são identificadas as medidas de melhoria do desempenho energético com melhores resultados na redução do custo global. As medidas com impacto mais relevante quer ao nível da redução de custos quer na redução dos consumos energéticos, foram a substituição da iluminação e dos envidraçados. A introdução de isolamento nas paredes e cobertura, apesar do impacto reduzido tanto ao nível dos custos como na energia, afiguram-se, em algumas das soluções testadas, também rentáveis. Tendo em vista o objetivo final de transformar estes edifícios em edifícios de emissões nulas de CO2 eq. até 2020, é possível aferir que: -As medidas de melhoria da envolvente opaca, apesar de pouco relevantes, podem ser, ainda que marginalmente, rentáveis; -A melhoria do desempenho energético de envidraçados e da iluminação são medidas essenciais; -A aproximação ao objetivo de emissões nulas só é atingível com a introdução de sistemas

The aim is to identify research needs from a review of the state of the art of three aspects related to adaptive facade systems: (1) dynamic performance requirements; (2) facade design under stochastic boundary conditions and (3) experiences with adaptive facade systems and market needs.
