Background and Objective: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is highly prevalent in the group of autoimmune and inflammatory patients. Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) plays an important role in regulating complex interactions between pancreatic beta cells and immune cells in the development of T1D. This study was performed to determine the simultaneous effect of resistance training and endothelial progenitor cell injection on blood glucose levels and protein expression of proinflammatory factors TNF-a and IL-10 in muscle tissue of streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic male rats. Methods: In this experimental study, 36 male Wistar rats weighing approximately 200±20 g and six weeks old were randomly divided into six groups. Induction of diabetes was performed by intraperitoneal injection of STZ at a dose of 45 mg/kg body weight. Groups included diabetes + stem cell injection + resistance training group, diabetes + resistance training group, diabetes + stem cell injection group, control diabetic group to control the passage of time, and healthy basal and diabetic groups for defaults. Exercises were performed for 17 sessions of resistance training, including climbing ladders with increasing weight three days a week in the same laboratory conditions. Endothelial progenitor cells were cultured by femoral bone marrow aspiration and culture and then injection into the tail vein. 68 hours after the last training session, blood glucose levels were assessed by ELISA and the expression of TNF-a and IL-10 protein in muscle tissue was assessed by Western blotting. Abstract Babesiosis is a globally distributed zoonotic parasitic disease in a broad range of vertebrates with great importance in the veterinary field. The standard diagnostic test for Babesiosis in animals is microscopic identification of the parasite in a venous blood smear stained with Giemsa combined with assessment of clinical manifestations throughout the acute phase of the disease. The present study was planned to determine the presence of Babesia species in camels from the southeastern regions of Iran. A total of 140 blood samples of camels were randomly collected in four selected cities including Qaen, Nehbandan, Iranshahr, and Zahedan from March to August 2019. Blood smears of each case were also examined by the Giemsa staining method and extracted DNA samples were subjected to internal transcribed spacers (ITS1) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification. The prevalence rates using microscopically and molecular examinations were 10% and 19.28%, respectively. The prevalence rates significantly vary between the selected regions (p = 0.003). PCR technique showed higher sensitivity than microscopy. We found that all infected camels were positive for Babesia caballi. The rate of infection with Babesia among the camel in Zahedan is remarkable. Early diagnosis and early treatment can prevent further spread of the disease in this area.

This study optimized the operational parameters of removing SO2 from flue gas via a polymeric hollow fiber membrane contactor (HFMC) using the response surface methodology (RSM). The distilled water and polypropylene hollow fibers were applied as the adsorbent and membrane material, respectively. Three experimental parameters were chosen as independent variables: liquid flow rate, gas flow rate, and initial SO2 concentration. The SO2 removal efficiency was significantly affected by the initial SO2 concentration. The optimal ratio of liquid-to-gas flow rate was found to be 0.25 to reach maximum separation efficiency (98.81%). The optimal value of the liquid flow rate was 33 l/h, and the optimal gas flow rate was 131 l/h. The effect of CO2 presence, module length, fibers number, temperature, and the adsorbent nature were also investigated under optimal values obtained for the ratio of liquid-to-gas flow rate. Results indicated that CO2 presence in the flue gas slightly affects SO2 removal using water as an absorbent in HFCM. Furthermore, it was indicated that the SO2 removal efficiency was a function of the flue gas temperature and number of fibers: it decreased as the temperature rose from 20 to 50°C and the fiber numbers increased from 300 to 1000. This study offers a model to predict the efficiency of SO2 removal using HFMC under different conditions and provides the ground to further explore the industrial applications of this technology.

Environmental factors strongly contribute to shaping the morphology of organisms. The present study mainly aims to examine how some physical factors in a habitat influence morphological variations in Baetis vernus along the Karaj River. Sampling was conducted using a kick net sampling device with a mesh size of 500 μm at 10 sampling sites (three replicates) by recording 11 environmental variables in autumn (2018) and spring (2019). Abstract In this study, a simple and green strategy was reported to prepare bimetallic nanoparticles (NPs) by the combination of zinc oxide (ZnO) and copper oxide (CuO) using Sambucus nigra L. extract. The physicochemical properties of these NPs such as crystal structure, size, and morphology were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission gun scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results suggested that these NPs contained polygonal ZnO NPs with hexagonal phase and spherical CuO NPs with monoclinic phase. The anticancer activity of the prepared bimetallic NPs was evaluated against lung and human melanoma cell lines based on MTT assay. As a result, the bimetallic ZnO/CuO NPs exhibited high toxicity on melanoma cancer cells while their toxicity on lung cancer cells was low.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of pomegranate seed powder on cadmium-poisoned testicular tissue in Japanese quail. A total of 270 day-old Japanese quail chicks were assigned to six treatment groups, control group, cadmium 50 ppm (group II), pomegranate seed powder (1 and 0.5 %; groups III and IV, respectively), pomegranate seed powder 1% + Cd 50 ppm (group V), pomegranate seed powder 0.5% + Cd 50 ppm (group VI). Stereological parameters in testes and TBARS, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels were determined. Testicular components showed a significant reduction in area surface and volume density in the cadmium-exposed groups compared with controls (p < 0.05). It was found that in the cadmium induction group, TBARS, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels were significantly higher compared to the normal level (p < 0.05). The results showed that pomegranate seed powder could increase the area surface and volume density of testicular germinal ingredients and decrease the content of TBARS, cholesterol, and triglyceride (p > 0.05) in cadmium poisoning testis. These results show that cadmium has destructive effects and pomegranate seed powder has prevented the development of these effects on stereological and lipid parameters.

In general, the growing resistance to traditional anti-leishmaniasis drugs and the ineffectiveness of appropriate treatment for leishmaniasis have prompted researchers to investigate the antiparasitic properties of plant-mediated synthesized nanomaterials and nanosystems. Potassium (K)-doped zinc oxide (ZnO) nanostructures with unique physicochemical properties can be employed as attractive candidate against this parasitic disease. In this study, K-doped zinc oxide (KdZ) nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized using Artemisia annua extracts via an eco-friendly method with the advantages of simplicity, low cost, and up-scalability. A. annua extracts were deployed due to their antiparasitic effects. The synthesized NPs were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The toxicity of these nanostructures was evaluated on Leishmania tropica and normal macrophage cells. As a result, the K-doped ZnO NPs could inhibit the L. tropica cells growth, in vitro.

Background and Aim: In patients with spondylolisthesis, both conservative and surgical approaches are considered based on the stage of the disease. However, in addition to the technical characteristics of the surgery and the stage of the disease, the underlying characteristics of the patients may also affect the therapeutic prognosis. In this regard, some studies have indicated that the surgical prognosis is worse in diabetic and hypertensive patients and also preoperative medical treatments, such as anticoagulants may be effective in the prognosis of the disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of underlying risk factors, such as diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and anticoagulant conditions (such as aspirin) in worsening outcomes after surgery in patients with spondylolisthesis. Methods and Materials/Patients: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 130 patients suffering from spondylolisthesis and scheduled for surgery. According to baseline characteristics, 65 patients with a history of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and receiving aspirin were categorized as the case group, and 65 sex- and age matched individuals without such comorbidities as the control group. Preoperative and postoperative radicular pain intensity, wound healing, and discharge from the surgical site were considered the study outcomes. Results: The two groups with and without comorbidities were matched for gender, mean age, mean body mass index, and time of operation. Preoperative pain intensity was similar in the groups, but those with comorbidities experienced higher radicular pain severity postoperatively. We showed no difference in the rate of surgical site discharging, but the lack of wound healing was significantly higher in those with comorbidities. Conclusion: In patients with spondylolisthesis and candidates for surgical treatment, a history of diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and aspirin can be associated with a worse prognosis, including no improvement in pain and lack of wound healing.

Background and Aim: The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) after acute spinal cord injury on increasing a grade of improvement entitled American spinal cord injury association impairment scale (AIS) as an individual participant data (IPD) meta-regression analysis of clinical trials. Methods and Materials/Patients: According to our search strategy, four studies were selected. Multilevel ordered logistic regression modeling was used to predict AIS grade with G-CSF administration and time variable (first day and a 3-month follow-up). The IDs of the studies as well as the time series variable were imported to the random part of the model. Odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were reported. Results: A total of 277 samples were studied. A fixed effect model was performed at first. Accordingly, using G-CSF was associated with increased AIS grade (lower impairment) (OR=1.503, 95% CI=1.110-2.035) adjusted with time series (OR=1.868, 95% CI=1.378-2.532). In the mixed effect model, G-CSF was again associated with increased AIS grade (OR=1.780, 95% CI=1.301- 2.436) adjusted with time series (OR=2.152, 95% CI=1.406-3.294). Conclusion: The present meta-analysis showed the protective effect of GCS-F observed as an improvement in AIS grade. This protecting effect was further after adjusting the random effects of time series and individual studies. Although multilevel modeling could reduce our limitations, it should be regarded that the number of trials was not enough to establish strong conclusions.

This research is a quantitative research in nature. In terms of control of variables, non-experimental and in terms of purpose is applied research and has been done by descriptive-correlation method. The statistical population of the study included cooperative experts of Ardabil province (N = 144 people). The sample size was determined 104 people using Morgan table. Simple random sampling method was randomly selected. The subjects were questioned and interviewed using a questionnaire. In the present study, the main tool for data collection was a questionnaire. The content validity of the tools used in this study was reviewed and confirmed by professors in the field of cooperation and university professors. In order to determine the reliability of the research tool, a pre-test was performed using 30 questionnaires in the early stages of questioning and its Cronbach's alpha value was calculated using SPSS software version 21. The results of the second type confirmatory factor analysis showed that the most effective factors include development of education, reform and improvement of rural economy, job creation and reduction of migration, improvement of household economy, expansion of participatory culture, development of industry, improvement of welfare services and agricultural development.

Abstract Greener methods for the synthesis of various nanostructures with well-organized characteristics and biomedical applicability have demonstrated several advantages, including simplicity, low toxicity, cost-effectiveness, and eco-friendliness. Spinel nickel ferrite (NiFe2O4) nanowhiskers with rod-like structures were synthesized using a simple and green method; these nanostructures were evaluated by X-ray diffraction analysis, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray energy diffraction spectroscopy. Additionally, the prepared nanowhiskers could significantly reduce the survival of Leishmania major promastigotes, at a concentration of 500 μg/mL; the survival of promastigotes was reduced to ≃ 26%. According to the results obtained from MTT test (in vitro), it can be proposed that further studies should be conducted to evaluate anti-leishmaniasis activity of these types of nanowhiskers in animal models.

Introduction and purpose: Epidemiological research pointed to an association between air pollution and increased mortality from cardiovascular complications. There is a relationship between the incidence of cardiovascular complications and increased levels of C-reactive protein (hs-CRP). The present study aimed to determine the relationship between particulate matter concentration (PM10) and C-reactive protein in healthy youth in Zahedan. Methods: This longitudinal study was performed from February 2016 to October 2017. The concentration of suspended particles (PM10) was measured by the environmental method once every 6 days and on all dusty days. Moreover, in different conditions of air pollution, the amount of C-reactive protein in the blood samples of 40 volunteers aged 18-30 years was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The relationship between biomarkers and different air pollution conditions was investigated using a t-test. Results: The minimum, mean, and maximum concentrations of suspended particles (PM10) were reported as 30.75±9.8, 187.5±183.44, 2366.75±936.38 micrograms per cubic meter, respectively. The lowest rate is in February and the highest in August. Moreover, the minimum, mean, and maximum concentrations of C-reactive protein were obtained at 12±.96, 3.88±1.69, 9.95±2.39 μg/ml, respectively.
