The radioactive isotope In-107 was studied using sub-barrier Coulomb excitation at the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN. Two gamma rays were observed during the experiment, corresponding to the low-lying 11/2(+) and 3/2(-)states. The reduced transition probability of the 11/2(+) state was determined with the semiclassical Coulomb excitation code GOSIA2. The result is discussed in comparison to large-scale shell-model calculations, previous unified-model calculations, and earlier Coulomb excitation measurements in the odd-mass In isotopes. In this article we discuss two aspects related to the 12C + 12C fusion reaction at low energies for carbon burning in supermassive stars. First we present plausible arguments for the notion that the observed resonance structures at the lowest measured energies arise from the relatively large spacing and narrow width of 24Mg compound levels at the corresponding excitation energy region. We thus point out that the Incoming Wave Boundary Condition is inappropriate for calculating the fusion cross section under these situations. Secondly, we report on a particle-γ coincidence technique that has been used for the first time to measure the fusion cross section in the system 12C + 12C at low beam energies. Based on these results, it should be possible to measure this important fusion cross section down to the 10 pb level within a reasonable length of time.

- Abstract
New, low-lying levels in the odd-odd, N=Z nucleus 62Ga have been identified using a sensitive technique, where in-beam γ rays from short-lived nuclei are tagged with β decays following recoil mass identification. A comparison of the results with shell-model and IBM-4 calculations demonstrates good agreement between theory and experiment, with the majority of predicted low-lying, low-spin T=0 states now identified. There is a dramatic change in the level density at low excitation energies for the N=Z nucleus 62Ga when compared with neighbouring odd-odd Ga isotopes where, in contrast, the low-lying level structure is dominated by configurations with T=1 pairing interactions between excess neutrons. This illustrates the distinctively different aspects of nuclear structure exhibited by nuclei with N=Z.

- Abstract
In the present study, B(E2; 2+ → 0+) values have been measured in the 208Rn and 206Po nuclei through Coulomb excitation of re-accelerated radioactive beams in inverse kinematics at CERN-ISOLDE. The resulting B(E2; 2+ → 0+) in 208Rn is ∼0.08 e2b2. These nuclei lie in, or at the boundary of the region where seniority scheme should persist. However, contributions from collective excitations may be present when mov- ing away from the N = 126 shell closure. To date, surprisingly little is known of the transition probabilities between the low-spin states in this region. ispartof: EPJ Web of Conferences vol:63 ispartof: Symposium on Heavy Ion Accelerator location:Canberra: AUSTRALIA date:8 Apr - 12 Apr 2013 status: published

For over a decade there has been a consensus that the diagnosis of schizophrenia should rest upon the presence of positive symptoms. Recently it has been suggested to give negative symptoms, which have played a prominent role in research, more diagnostic importance again. This study investigated the usefulness of that suggestion. In a sample of 489 inpatients covering the whole range of psychiatric diagnoses, the frequencies and prevalences of positive and negative symptoms were determined. Analyses of variance were calculated to assess the diagnostic validity of the different classes of symptoms. The study demonstrates that positive symptoms are of much higher diagnostic value than negative symptoms. A change of diagnostic procedures giving more importance to negative symptoms is discouraged.

A set of B(E2) values for the low-lying excited states in the radioactive isotope 109Sn were deduced from a Coulomb excitation experiment. The 2.87-MeV/u radioactive beam was produced at the REX-ISOLDE facility at CERN and was incident on a secondary 58Ni target. The B(E2) values were determined using the known 2+ → 0+ reduced transition probability in 58Ni as normalization with the semi-classical Coulomb excitation code GOSIA2. The transition probabilities are compared to shell-model calculations based on a realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction and the predictions of a simple core-excitation model. This measurement represents the first determination of multiple B(E2) values in a light Sn nucleus using the Coulomb excitation technique with low-energy radioactive beams. The results provide constraints for the single-neutron states relative to 100Sn and also indicate the importance of both single-neutron and collective excitations in the light Sn isotopes. ispartof: Physical Review C, Nuclear Physics vol:86 issue:3 status: published

- Abstract
The low-spin level scheme of 68Ni was investigated with the Gammasphere array following reactions between a 70Zn beam and 238U, 208Pb, and 197Au targets. Spin assignments for some states have been verified through γ-ray angular correlations, including the 0+ assignment for the 2511-keV level. Two previously unknown states at 3302 and 3405 keV have been identified. No evidence was found for a recently reported 216-ns, 0+ isomer at 2202 keV that was attributed to a proton two-particle, two-hole intruder configuration, despite experimental conditions similar to those used in the measurement reporting its discovery.

- Abstract
The level structure of the neutron-rich Cu-69, Cu-71, and Cu-73 isotopes has been investigated by means of multinucleon transfer reactions. The experiment was performed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro using the AGATA Demonstrator array coupled to the PRISMA magnetic spectrometer. Lifetimes of excited states in Cu nuclei were measured with the recoil-distance Doppler-shift method. The resulting electromagnetic matrix elements for transitions from excited states in Cu-69,Cu-71,Cu-73 nuclei are used to assess the collective or single-particle character of these states. The results are compared with predictions of large-scale shell-model calculations, giving further insight into the evolution of the proton pf shell as neutrons fill the 1g(9/2) orbital.

- Abstract
The IS475 collaboration conducted Coulomb-excitation experiments with post-accelerated radioactive Rn-220 and Ra-224 beams at the REX-ISOLDE facility. The beam particles (E-beam: 2.83 MeV/u) were Coulomb excited using Ni-60, Cd-14, and Sn-120 scattering targets. De-excitation gamma-rays were detected employing the Miniball array and scattered particles were detected in a silicon detector. Exploiting the Coulomb-excitation code GOSIA for each nucleus several matrix elements could be obtained from the measured gamma-ray yields. The extracted <3 parallel to E3 parallel to 0(+)> matrix element allows for the conclusion that, while Rn-220 represents an octupole vibrational system, Ra-224 has already substantial octupole correlations in its ground state. This finding has i(m)plications for the search of CP-violating Schiff moments in the atomic systems of the adjacent odd-mass nuclei.

- Abstract
Background: In neutron-rich nuclei around N = 40 rapid changes in nuclear structure can be observed. While Ni-68 exhibits signatures of a doubly magic nucleus, experimental data along the isotopic chains in even more exotic Fe and Cr isotopes-such as excitation energies and transition strengths-suggest a sudden rise in collectivity toward N = 40. Purpose: Reduced quadrupole transition strengths for low-lying transitions in neutron-rich Cr-58,Cr-60,Cr-62 are investigated. This gives quantitative new insights into the evolution of quadrupole collectivity in the neutron-rich region close to N = 40. Method: The recoil distance Doppler-shift (RDDS) technique was applied to measure lifetimes of low-lying states in Cr-58,Cr-60,Cr-62. The experiment was carried out at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) with the SeGA array in a plunger configuration coupled to the S800 magnetic spectrograph. The states of interest were populated by means of one-proton knockout reactions. Results: Data reveal a rapid increase in quadrupole collectivity for Cr-58,Cr-60,Cr-62 toward N = 40 and point to stronger quadrupole deformations compared to neighboring Fe isotopes. The experimental B(E2) values are reproduced well with state-of-the-art shell-model calculations using the LNPS effective interaction. A consideration of intrinsic quadrupole moments and B-42 ratios suggest an evolution toward a rotational nature of the collective structures in Cr-60,Cr-62. Compared to Cr-58, experimental B-42 and B-62 values for Cr-60 are in better agreement with the E(5) limit. Conclusion: Our results indicate that collective excitations in neutron-rich Cr isotopes saturate at N = 38, which is in agreement with theoretical predictions. More detailed experimental data of excited structures and interband transitions are needed for a comprehensive understanding of quadrupole collectivity close to N = 40. This calls for additional measurements in neutron-rich Cr and neighboring Ti and Fe nuc

- Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major health issue for HIV-positive individuals, associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Development and implementation of a risk score model for CKD would allow comparison of the risks and benefits of adding potentially nephrotoxic antiretrovirals to a treatment regimen and would identify those at greatest risk of CKD. The aims of this study were to develop a simple, externally validated, and widely applicable long-term risk score model for CKD in HIV-positive individuals that can guide decision making in clinical practice. A total of 17,954 HIV-positive individuals from the Data Collection on Adverse Events of Anti-HIV Drugs (D:A:D) study with ≥3 estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) values after 1 January 2004 were included. Baseline was defined as the first eGFR > 60 ml/min/1.73 m2 after 1 January 2004; individuals with exposure to tenofovir, atazanavir, atazanavir/ritonavir, lopinavir/ritonavir, other boosted protease inhibitors before baseline were excluded. CKD was defined as confirmed (>3 mo apart) eGFR ≤ 60 ml/min/1.73 m2. Poisson regression was used to develop a risk score, externally validated on two independent cohorts. In the D:A:D study, 641 individuals developed CKD during 103,185 person-years of follow-up (PYFU; incidence 6.2/1,000 PYFU, 95% CI 5.7–6.7; median follow-up 6.1 y, range 0.3–9.1 y). Older age, intravenous drug use, hepatitis C coinfection, lower baseline eGFR, female gender, lower CD4 count nadir, hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) predicted CKD. The adjusted incidence rate ratios of these nine categorical variables were scaled and summed to create the risk score. The median risk score at baseline was −2 (interquartile range –4 to 2). There was a 1:393 chance of developing CKD in the next 5 y in the low risk group (risk score < 0, 33 events), rising to 1:47 and 1:6 in the medium (risk score 0–4, 103 events) and high risk groups (risk score ≥ 5, 505 events)

A Field-Effect Transistor (FET) is presented that combines the conventional lay-out of the silicon substrate (channel and source and drain connections) with a Si-C linked organic gate insulator contacted via an organic, conducting polymer. It is shown that this hybrid device combines the excellent electrical behavior of the silicon substrate and the ease of use and good properties of organic insulators and contacting materials. Keywords: organic monolayer, FET, conducting polymer

Deliberate ending of life of newborns is an extreme measure that is usually based on hopeless and existing unbearable suffering. There are currently developments that may lead to clarification and refinement of the standards and rules surrounding deliberate ending of life of newborns. This pertains to the phase immediately following the decision to refrain from curative treatment. An important aspect here is that parents and doctors will have to reach agreement on the extent to which the suffering of the newborn can be classified as unbearable. Furthermore, in the case of deliberate ending of life of newborns, consideration must be given not only to current suffering but also the severe suffering that will develop in the near future. The points ofspecial importance that the medical profession had developed in relation to the assessment of future unbearable suffering may provide assistance here and should be implemented.

Effective Primary Care and Public Health [EBP 3] ,Heart, lung and circulation [UMCN 2.1] ,respiratory tract diseases - Abstract
Contains fulltext : 58590.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) BACKGROUND AND AIM: COPD leads to a progressive decline of pulmonary function. Family physicians treat a substantial number of patients with COPD and are encouraged to start treatment at as early a stage as is possible. This study analyzed the effectiveness of early inhaled corticosteroid treatment on the decline of pulmonary function in COPD patients. PATIENTS AND SETTING: Subjects with a rapid decline in lung function (ie, FEV(1) decline, > 80 mL/yr) who had never before received a diagnosis of asthma or COPD. METHODS: Two-year, randomized, controlled, double-blind clinical trial of fluticasone propionate (250 microg bid; 24 patients) or placebo (25 patients), followed by a 7-month open-label study in which all subjects received fluticasone propionate. The primary outcome was the post-bronchodilator therapy FEV(1,) and secondary outcomes were respiratory symptoms, exacerbations, health state, quality of life, and health-care utilization. RESULTS: After 31 months, there were no statistical differences in post-bronchodilator therapy FEV(1) between the intervention group and the control group. No statistical differences were observed for symptoms, exacerbations, or quality of life, although tendencies were consistently in favor of treatment. There was no significant impact on the direct or indirect costs. CONCLUSIONS: There are no indications that early treatment with inhaled corticosteroids modifies a rapid decline in lung function or respiratory symptoms and quality of life.
