Abstract

The aim of the study was to compare the measurements of optical (AL-Scan; Nidek Co., Ltd.) and ultrasonic (Echo Scan US-800; Nidek Co., Ltd.) biometry devices and to assess refractive results after cataract surgery. Eighty-one cataractous eyes of 81 patients were included in this study. Biometry was performed using the AL-Scan and an ultrasonic biometer (USB). Axial length (AL), keratometry (K) data, and intraocular lens (IOL) power calculations using the SRK/T formula were compared. Bland-Altman analysis was used to assess the extent of agreement between AL-Scan and USB data in terms of AL measurement and IOL power calculation. 204. Tear function alterations in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Complaints of dry eye are prevalent worldwide and are known to be associated with insulin resistance (IR) and hyperandrogenism. However, dry eye is often overlooked in the context of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether or not there is any relation between tear functions and PCOS, which is a multifaceted disorder associated with IR or hyperandrogenism. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 35 women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) were enrolled in this study, along with 27 healthy controls. Body mass index (BMI), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and free testosterone levels on the third day of menstruation were recorded, as well as hirsutism score (using the Ferriman Gallwey scoring system), insulin resistance (homeostasis model assessment), neutrophil-to- lymphocyte ratios (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratios (PLR), and mean platelet volumes (MPV). A complete ocular examination was followed by administration of the ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire and Schirmer and tear break-up time (TBUT) tests. RESULTS: Schirmer and OSDI results were similar between groups, but TBUT was significantly lower in the PCOS group (p = 0.002).There were negative correlations between FG score and TBUT test (r = -0.406, p = 0.001) and between NLR and Schirmer test (r = -0.294, p = 0.025). CONCLUSIONS: Although subjective dry eye symptoms do not present in all patients, these results confirm that tear reduction, which can cause further complications in patients with PCOS, can be detected by careful examination and sensitive tests.

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to determine the effects of treatment with thyroxin and dexamethasone separately and together on I/R injury in newborn rat intestine. Newborn rats were divided into five groups: (1) control (C) group, (2) sham group, (3) thyroxin (T(4)) group, (4) dexamethasone (DEX) group and (5) thyroxin plus dexamethasone (T(4)+DEX) group. Each group consisted of seven pups. Group T(4) received thyroxin I mu g/g BW/day, group DEX received dexamethasone 5 mu g/gBW/day and group T(4)+DEX received 1 mu g/gBW/day thyroxin and 5 mu g/gBW/day dexamethasone i.p. for 7 days. Group C received only physiological saline (NaCl 0.9%). Animals were sacrificed at the end of the reperfusion period and ileum samples were obtained. Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, a product of lipid peroxidation, glutathione (GSH) levels, a key antioxidant were determined in ileum homogenates. In the jejunum, only T(4) caused a significant statistical elevation in GSH compared with control, sham and DEX groups (p < 0.05). There was significant statistical interaction between T(4) and DEX treatment, i.e. the effect of T(4) treatment was greater in both regions. Mucosal damage scores showed statistical significant effect of T(4) in the ileum compared with control and T(4)+DEX group. The same significant statistical effect was seen with T(4)+DEX group compared to the control group in the ileum. Overall, the comparison between the two regions shows a powerful effect of T(4) in both regions. There was statistical significance between the scores of T(4) in the ileum and of DEX and T(4)+DEX in the jejunum. A beneficial effect of thyroxin in all samples was observed in this study supporting its protective effects against I/R injury which was attenuated by glucocorticoid administration.

Abstract

A case of otocephaly with anencephaly and meningomyelocele: Otocephaly is a rare lethal syndrome with microstomia, aglossia, agnathia, and synotia as major clinical features due to arrest in development of the first branchial arch. Some associated anomalies may be present as cyclopia, holoprosencephaly, cerebellar hypoplasia, situs inversus, and other visceral anomalies. We describe a case of fetus, spontaneously aborted in the 14th week of gestation with otocephaly complex (agnathia, synotia, microstomia) and associated anencephaly and meningomyelocele.

222. Silver recovery from waste radiographic films by cementation and reduction.

Abstract

Waste radiographic films can act as potential source materials for the recovery of valuable silver. In this study, a chemical processing scheme was adopted to recover Ag metal from waste radiographic films. The films were dissolved in 1 M nitric acid (HNO3) solution for 3 h at 70 degrees C to convert Ag into silver nitrate (AgNO3(aq)). Subsequently, the AgNo3 solution was treated using two different methods. The first involved cementation with fine iron powder and with fine zinc powder. These two well-known cementators were compared with respect to purity of the final product and the recovery efficiency. The second method was sodium hydroxide (NaOH) precipitation. The treatment with Fe powder and Zn powder resulted in the formation of metallic silver powder in just one step. Ag2O obtained via NaOH precipitation was then treated using two different methods: a treatment with a mixture of glucose (C6H12O6) and NaOH to yield metallic silver and a heat treatment in which Ag2O was converted to silver metal at 500 degrees C. TGA analysis revealed that at 400 degrees C Ag2O decomposes into Ag and O2. With the exception of the powder produced by glucose reduction, all the powders would easily find industrial application. In addition, by using relatively inexpensive chemicals these applied processes show promise for further scaling up. Abstract

The effects of different reaction parameters on silver recovery efficiency were studied in detail and parameters were optimised. The possibility of recovering silver with more than 99% efficiency was demonstrated under both air and argon atmospheres. In the latter case, greater than 99% recovery was achieved at an agitation rate of 875 rpm for 8 min. When cementation was carried out under air, the silver recovery efficiency decreased with increasing time and agitation rate. This decrease can be attributed to the redissolution of cemented silver into the solution.
