Abstract

Parthenium hysterophorus is an invasive weed, produces a lot of non edible biomass that is hazardous to humans. This study provides an insight to its beneficial use by converting the biomass into value-added materials like compost and biochar and subsequent amendment in soil as fertilizer. The biochar was prepared in a locally fabricated charcolator while the compost was prepared in a rolling tumbler. Two-year field experiment was set up using different combinations of biochar (BC), compost (C) and commercial fertilizer (CF) in the rice-wheat cultivation system in Lahore, Pakistan to assess soil health and crops performance after characterizing the products using advanced analyses. GCMS analysis has revealed the presence of stigmasterol and campesterol (plant growth promoters) in prepared compost. Field data showed that the combined application of compost and biochar in rice and wheat fields significantly improved the characteristics of soil like SOM and CEC. Agronomic characteristics such as the number of grains per tiller, grain weight and biological yield were significantly higher in C + CF (half dose of each) and almost equal to CF in the first year. In the second year, both crops agronomic performance was considerably more evident and pronounced following the same pattern. All other agronomic features also followed the same pattern. Thus, mixed application of organic and inorganic fertilizer on recurrent basis is recommended to improve yield of wheat and rice along with soil amelioration in the rice wheat cultivation system. Abstract

Usability is one of the most important characteristics of software applications, especially when it comes to mobile shopping applications. There is a great deal of shift from traditional shopping to online shopping because it benefits both parties i.e., customers as well as businessmen. In such a scenario, the usability factor can play a very vital role in the business industry. If a client stops using a mobile shopping app because it is not user-friendly, it can badly damage the annual revenues especially when hundreds of alternatives are available and there is tough competition. Therefore, to keep existing customers intact and to attract new customers, it is very important to provide a user-friendly mobile app to customers. This paper considers a large variety of online customers with diverse requirements. background and constraints and evaluate the usability of existing mobile e-commerce apps to identify the problems people face with existing applications and do a systematic review of existing shopping apps. Then, we propose a personalized and adaptive usability model for mobile commerce apps considering the neglected user type i.e., illiterates and people with tactile disabilities. The proposed model LRAP is a layered approach from generalization to specification and it can be considered an extension of the famous PACMAD usability model. Besides this, we also suggest a combining score tool which will be helpful in measuring the usability of any app. Participant-based usability evaluation is the major technique used to identify the design problems in existing mobile commerce apps. 229. Chemical composition, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities of P. roxburghii oleoresin essential oils extracted by steam distillation, superheated steam, and supercritical fluid CO2 extraction.

Abstract

Pinus roxburghii is a rich source of high‐quality oleoresin that is composed of resin acids and essential oil (EO). The present research work was planned to study and compare the yield, biological activities, and chemical profiling of P. roxburghii oleoresin EOs extracted through various green extraction methods. Steam distillation (SD), supercritical fluid extraction, and superheated SD (SHSD) at different temperatures (120, 140, and 160°C) were employed to extract EOs from P. roxburghii oleoresin. Antioxidant potential of EOs was determined by total antioxidant content/ferric‐reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), 2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)‐free radical scavenging activity (DPPH‐FRSA), hydrogen peroxide scavenging assays, and percentage inhibition in linoleic acid. Antimicrobial activity of EOs was determined by resazurin microtiter‐plate, disc diffusion, and micro‐dilution broth susceptibility assays. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry was used to determine the chemical composition of EOs. It was observed that extraction methods significantly affected the yield, biological activities, and chemical composition of EOs. The maximum yield (19.92%) was found in EO extracted by SHSD at 160°C. EO extracted by SHSD at 120°C showed the highest DPPH‐FRSA (63.33% ± 0.47%), linoleic acid oxidation inhibition (96.55% ± 1.71%), hydrogen peroxide scavenging activity (59.42% ± 0.32%), and total antioxidant contents/FRAP (134.49% ± 1.34 mg/L of gallic acid equivalent). The antimicrobial activity results showed that superheated steam–extracted EO of 120°C revealed the highest antifungal and antibacterial activity. It is concluded that SHSD is an alternative and effective technique for the extraction of oleoresins EO that improves the EO yield and biological activities. Further research on optimization and experimental parameters for the extraction of P. roxburghii oleoresin EO by SHSD is required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this study, nickel oxide–Y2O3-doped ZrO2 (NiO-YSZ) composite powder as an anode material was synthesized using a cost-effective combustion method for high-temperature solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). Further, the effects of sintering temperatures (1200, 1300, and 1400 °C) were studied for its properties in relation to the SOFC performance. The prepared and sintered NiO-YSZ materials were characterized for their surface morphology, composition, structure, and conductivity. The cubic crystalline nature of NiO and YSZ was sufficed by X-ray diffraction, and SEM images revealed an increase in the densification of microstructure by an increase in the sintering temperature. EDX spectrum confirmed the presence of nickel, yttrium, and zirconia without any impurity. Conductivity measurements, under a hydrogen environment, revealed that NiO-YSZ, sintered at 1400 °C, exhibits better conductivity compared to the samples sintered at lower temperatures. Electrochemical performance of button-cells was also evaluated and peak power density of 0.62 Wcm−2 is observed at 800 °C. The citrate combustion method provided peak performance for cells containing anode sintered at 1200 °C, which was previously reported at higher sintering temperatures.
