Based on a corpus-driven analysis of two translated versions of Hongloumeng (one by David Hawkes and the other by Xianyi Yang and Gladys Yang) in parallel corpora, this article investigates the use of lexical bundles in an attempt to trace the stylistic features and differences in the translations produced by the respective translators. The Hongloumeng corpus is developed at the sentence level to facilitate co-occurrence of the source texts and the two corresponding translations. For this purpose, the three-word and four-word lexical bundles were first extracted and then analyzed with respect to the functional classification proposed by Biber et al. (2004). The results of the study show that Hawkes' translation is embedded with a greater number and variety of lexical bundles than the one by the Yang couple. Background: Optimal supportive end of life care for frail, older adults in long term care (LTC) homes involves symptom management, family participation, advance care plans, and organizational support. This 2-phase study aimed to combine multi-disciplinary opinions, build group consensus, and identify the top interventions needed to develop a supportive end of life care strategy for LTC., Methods: A consensus-building approach was undertaken in 2 Phases. The first phase deployed modified Delphi questionnaires to address and transform diverse opinions into group consensus. The second phase explored and prioritized the interventions needed to develop a supportive end of life care strategy for LTC. Development of the Delphi questionnaire was based on findings from published results of physician perspectives of barriers and facilitators to optimal supportive end of life care in LTC, a literature search of palliative care models in LTC, and published results of patient, family and nursing perspectives of supportive end of life care in long term care. The second phase involved World Café Style workshop discussions. A multi-disciplinary purposive sample of individuals inclusive of physicians; staff, administrators, residents, family members, and content experts in palliative care, and researchers in geriatrics and gerontology participated in round one of the modified Delphi questionnaire. A second purposive sample derived from round one participants completed the second round of the modified Delphi questionnaire. A third purposive sample (including participants from the Delphi panel) then convened to identify the top priorities needed to develop a supportive end-of-life care strategy for LTC., Results: 19 participants rated 75 statements on a 9-point Likert scale during the first round of the modified Delphi questionnaire. 11 participants (participation rate 58 %) completed the second round of the modified Delphi questionnaire and reached consensus on the inclusion of 71candidate statements. 35 multidisciplinary participants discussed the 71 statements remaining and prioritized the top clinical practice, communication, and policy interventions needed to develop a supportive end of life strategy for LTC., Conclusions: Multi-disciplinary stakeholders identified and prioritized the top interventions needed to develop a 5-point supportive end of life care strategy for LTC.

The core objective of current research was determined to nutritional and bioactive profile of maize bran (MB)-enriched flour in relation to its end-use product quality. Furthermore, rheological properties of MB-enriched flour at different levels (5%, 10%, and 15%) were explicated through farinograph and mixograph. Moreover, bread was prepared with the addition of MB-enriched flour and was characterized for nutritional and textural properties. Results showed that MB-enriched flour having high water absorption and water retaining potential up to 4%-7% as compared to wheat flour (WF). Moreover, dough height gradually decreased with the addition of MB due to water-binding ability of bran which causes a decrease in gas retention during fermentation. This resulted in bread volume decrease (4%-7%) as compared to WF. Furthermore, the moisture content and hardness increased with the addition of MB. The water activity of bread slightly increased with the addition of maize bran after 4-day storage. In millennia, much attention has been paid toward agro-industrial waste which consists of lignin and cellulosic biomass. In this perspective, biomass waste which consists of lignocellulosic mass is an inexpensive, renewable, abundant that provides a unique natural resource for large-scale and cost-effective bioenergy collection. In this current scenario, efforts are directed to briefly review the agro-industrial lignocellulosic biomass as a broad spectrum of numerous functional ingredients, its utilization, and respective health benefits with special to wheat straw. Wheat straw is lignocellulosic mass owing to the presence of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. Its microbial culture is the most important and well adjusted, for a variety of applications in the fermentation substrate, feed, food, medicine, industry, and agriculture in order to increase soil fertility. In industrial fermentation, wheat straw can be used as substrates for the production of a wide range of hydrolytic enzymes, drugs, metabolites, and other biofuels as a low-cost substrate or a natural source. Conclusively, wheat straw is the best source to produce bioethanol, biogas, and biohydrogen in biorefineries because it is a renewable, widely distributed, and easily available with very low cost, and its consumption is protected and environment friendly. This study was planned to investigate the effect of replacing milk fat with aloe vera gel addition on yogurt quality. Purposely, yogurt was prepared with different concentration of aloe vera gel and coded as AGY 0,  = Control (3.5% fat and no AG), AGY 1  = (1% fat and 1% AG), AGY 2  = (1% fat and 2% AG), AGY 3  = (1% fat and 3% AG), AGY 4  = (2% fat and 1% AG), AGY 5  = (2% fat and 2% AG), and AGY 6  = (2% fat and 3% AG). Aloe vera gel yogurt was analyzed for physicochemical, microbial, and sensory characteristics with defined interval (0, 7th, 14th, and 21st) days. All attributes of the yogurt were significantly (0.05) affected by the addition of aloe vera gel. Results showed that the pH (4.6-4.05), viscosity (46.4-4.3), WHC (32.8%-26.1%), fat (0.9%-3.48%), protein (3.14%-3.36%), lactose (4.07%-4.23%), ash (0.48%-0.63%), total solids (11.08%-17.18%), SNF (7.69-l5.21%), and TPC (2.36 × 10 7 to 1.02 × 10 7  CFU/ml) values of yogurt samples decreased with storage time. However, acidity and syneresis of yogurt increased with the passage of time ranging from 1.12%-1.67% and 0.9-5 ml, respectively. In conclusion, aloe vera improved the texture of the yogurt which leads to higher consumer acceptability. Addition of 3% aloe vera to 1% fat (AGY 3 ) containing buffalo milk yogurt was found to best for physicochemical as well as organoleptic characteristics as well as organoleptic characteristics., (© 2020 The Authors. The current research was designed to determine the amino acid profile and microbial properties of kachra hareer. For the purpose, kachra hareer was purchased with their brand names coded as S1, S2, S3, and S4 from five towns named as L1, L2, L3, L4, and L5. The samples were analyzed for their amino acid profile and microbial properties, while the water and alcohol extractive values were analyzed to obtain the different levels of purity during processing. The results explained that physicochemical analyses, that is, pH, moisture, acidity, and vitamin C, ranged from 4.67% to 9.44%, 22% to 40%, 0.054% to 1.44%, and 7.67% to 19.36%, respectively. However, essential amino acids histidine, isoleucine, leucine, methionine, phenylalanine, proline, threonine, and valine ranged from 470.3 to 484.5, 516.1 to 527.5, 805.5 to 817.4, 910.1 to 922.5, 240.2 to 250.5, 508.2 to 518.2, 1,160.5 to 1,172.6, 466.9 to 476.3, and 502.5 to 513.4 mg/kg, respectively, whereas nonessential amino acids alanine, arginine, aspartic acid cysteine, glutamic acid, serine, tyrosine, and glycine ranged from 612.7 to 628.2, 1,212.3 to 1,225.9, 7,254.2 to 7,258.8, ND, 1,561.2 to 1,575.2, 634.8 to 648.9, 618.4 to 630.4, and 712.8 to 723.7 mg/kg, respectively. Despite the provision of safe and cost-effective chemopreventive cancer approaches, still there are requirements to enhance their efficiency. The use of dietary agents as phytochemicals plays an imperative role against different human cancer cell lines. Among these novel dietary agents, fisetin (3,3',4',7-tetrahydroxyflavone) is present in different fruits and vegetables such as apple, persimmon, grape, strawberry, cucumber, and onion. Being a potent anticancer agent, fisetin has been used to inhibit stages in the cancer cells (proliferation, invasion), prevent cell cycle progression, inhibit cell growth, induce apoptosis, cause polymerase (PARP) cleavage, and modulate the expressions of Bcl-2 family proteins in different cancer cell lines (HT-29, U266, MDA-MB-231, BT549, and PC-3M-luc-6), respectively. Further, fisetin also suppresses the activation of the PKCα/ROS/ERK1/2 and p38 MAPK signaling pathways, reduces the NF-κB activation, and down-regulates the level of the oncoprotein securin. Fisetin also inhibited cell division and proliferation and invasion as well as lowered the TET1 expression levels. The current review article highlights and discusses the anticancer role of fisetin in cell cultures and animal and human studies. Conclusively, fisetin as a polyphenol with pleiotropic pharmacological properties showed promising anticancer activity in a wide range of cancers. The main objective of current study was to evaluate the antioxidant potential and nutritional composition of milk thistle with special reference to silymarin. For the purpose, different varieties of milk thistle were procured from three different cities of Pakistan. The study was comprised of three different phases. In 1st phase, nutritional composition, that is, moisture, fat, protein, fiber, and nitrogen free extract, was determined according to their respective methods. Moreover, antioxidant potential and quantification of silymarin content were explored in 2nd phase. Furthermore, in last phase, milk thistle seeds tea was developed and evaluated for nutritional and sensorial characteristics. At last, data obtained from each parameter was subjected to appropriate statistical design to determine the level of significance. Results showed significant difference in the nutritional and chemical composition of different milk thistle varieties as well as locations. Moreover, moisture content, ash content, fat content, fiber content, protein content, and NFE varied from 6.27% to 5.01%, 2.37 to 1.25%, 23.19 to 19.74%, 7.4 to 4.39%, 30.09 to 20.74%, and 45.42 to 34.13%, respectively. Furthermore, silymarin content quantified though HPLC ranged from 1669.5 mg/g to 1607.6 mg/g for soxhlet extract whereas, 1,840.6 mg/g to 1765.9 mg/g for microwave-assisted extraction extract. The objective of the current study was to explore the probiotics carrier potential of apple dried snacks and improve the survival of probiotics under simulated gastrointestinal conditions. Purposely, the probiotics were encapsulated using two hydrogel materials (sodium alginate and carrageenan) by using encapsulator. Briefly, slices of apple were immersed in solution containing free and encapsulated probiotics and then dried by conventional drying method. The dried apple snack was analyzed for different characteristics (physiochemical and microbiological) during storage. The viability of the free and encapsulated probiotics was accessed in apple snack and under simulated gastrointestinal conditions. Apple snack rich with encapsulated probiotics showed a significant result ( p  < .05) regarding the survival and stability. The encapsulated probiotics decreased from 9.5 log CFU/g to 8.83 log CFU/g as compared to free probiotics that decreased to 5.28 log CFU/g. Furthermore, encapsulated probiotics exhibited a better stability under simulated gastrointestinal conditions as compared to free. During storage, an increase in phenolic content and hardness was observed while decrease in pH was noted. Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted ongoing challenges to optimal supportive end-of-life care for adults living in long-term care (LTC) facilities. A supportive end-of-life care approach emphasises family involvement, optimal symptom control, multidisciplinary team collaboration and death and bereavement support services for residents and families. Community-based and palliative care specialist physicians who visit residents in LTC facilities play an important role in supportive end-of-life care. Yet, perspectives, experiences and perceptions of these physicians remain unknown. The objective of this study was to explore barriers and facilitators to optimal supportive end-of-life palliative care in LTC through the experiences and perceptions of community-based and palliative specialist physicians who visit LTC facilities., Design: Qualitative study using semi-structured interviews, basic qualitative description and directed content analysis using the COM-B (capability, opportunity, motivation - behaviour) theoretical framework., Setting: Residential long-term care., Participants: 23 physicians who visit LTC facilities from across Alberta, Canada, including both in urban and rural settings of whom 18 were community-based physicians and 5 were specialist palliative care physicians., Results: Motivation barriers include families' lack of frailty knowledge, unrealistic expectations and emotional reactions to grief and uncertainty. Capability barriers include lack of symptom assessment tools, as well as palliative care knowledge, training and mentorship. Dietary fiber is a nondigestible constituent of vegetal foods, formed by insoluble and soluble dietary fiber. The intake of dietary fiber, especially soluble dietary fiber, is limited and demands researcher's attention. The modification of cereal's dietary fiber, predominantly insoluble fiber, could be one possible solution. The current study evaluated the comparative effects of several thermal treatments on the modification of insoluble dietary fiber in barley and explored their therapeutic potential in vivo against hypercholesterolemia. The two cultivars of barley, Haider-93 and Jau-87, were thermally treated using different techniques, and dietary fiber was extracted. Successively, the intake of these dietary fibers was evaluated for its antilipidemic activity in normal and hypercholesterolemic rats. In the first phase, thermal treatments especially cooking without soaking increased the soluble fiber (68.08%). The roasting all increased the soluble fiber contents, however, at relatively lower rate (53.91%). The results of efficacy study revealed that biochemical parameters in control animals were within the normal clinical ranges, thus appraising the safe status of the experimental diets. The thermally treated barley fiber decreased total cholesterol (12.14%-12.63%), low-density lipoprotein (14.12%-14.85%), and triglycerides (2.25%-4.32%). The study recorded increasing trends for high-density lipoprotein in both normal and hypercholesterolemic rats. In the nutshell, thermal modification of dietary fiber increased the ratio of soluble to insoluble dietary fiber that improved its hypocholesterolemic potential. The present study was designed with the objective to compare the viability and stability of free and encapsulated probiotics under simulated technological and human gastrointestinal conditions. L. acidophilus was encapsulated using two wall materials (sodium alginate, soy protein isolate, and SA-SPI) by extrusion method for enhanced viability under stressed conditions. Free and encapsulated probiotics were subjected to some simulated technological and gastrointestinal conditions. Furthermore, free and encapsulated probiotics were also incorporated in dairy dessert to evaluate the viability and stability during storage. Encapsulation using sodium alginate and SPI as a coating materials significantly ( p  < .05) improved the survival of probiotics under simulated gastrointestinal and thermal conditions. The buffering effect of microbeads prolonged their survival and stability of under simulated conditions. The number of surviving probiotic cells encapsulated with sodium alginate, SPI, and SA-SPI over 120 days of product storage was 7.85 ± 0.39, 7.45 ± 0.37, and 8.50 ± 0.43 cfu/ml, respectively. In case of free cells, the surviving cells were just 3.5 ± 0.18 cfu/ml over the period of storage. The current study was conducted to elucidate the impact of encapsulation on the stability and viability of probiotic bacteria ( Bifidobacterium bifidum ) in cheddar cheese and in vitro gastrointestinal conditions. Purposely, probiotics were encapsulated in two hydrogel materials (kepa carrageenan and sodium alginate) by using an internal gelation method. Cheddar cheese was supplemented with unencapsulated/free and encapsulated probiotics. The product was subjected to physicochemical (pH, titrable acidity, moisture, and protein) and microbiological analysis for a period of 35 days of storage. Furthermore, the probiotics (free and encapsulated) were subjected to simulated gastrointestinal conditions. The initial probiotic count in cheese containing encapsulated probiotic was 9.13 log CFU/g and 9.15 log CFU/g which decreased to 8.10 log CFU/g and 7.67 log CFU/g while cheese containing unencapsulated probiotic initially 9.18 log CFU/g decreased to 6.58 log CFU/g over a period of 35 days of storage. The incorporation of unencapsulated and encapsulated probiotic affected the physicochemical, microbiological, and sensory attributes of the cheese. The encapsulated probiotic bacteria exhibited better survival as compared to unencapsulated probiotic. A 2.60 CFU/g log reduction in unencapsulated cells while just 1.03 CFU/g and 1.48 CFU/g log reduction in case of sodium alginate and K-carrageenan, respectively, was recorded. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the upshot of microencapsulation on the stability and viability of probiotics in carrier food (ice cream) and simulated gastrointestinal (GIT) conditions. Purposely, Lactobacillus casei was encapsulated with two different hydrocolloids, that is, calcium alginate (Ca-ALG) and whey protein concentrate (WPC) by using encapsulator. The obtained microbeads were characterized in terms of encapsulation efficiency and morphological features. Afterward, the probiotics in free and encapsulated form were incorporated into ice cream. The product was subjected for physicochemical, microbiological, and sensory attributes over a storage period of 80 days. Microencapsulation with both hydrogels significantly ( p  < .05) improved the viability of probiotics in both carrier food and simulated GIT conditions.The initial viable count of probiotics encapsulated with Ca-ALG and WPC was 9.54 and 9.52 log CFU/ml, respectively, that declined to 8.59 and 8.39 log CFU/ml, respectively, over period of 80 days of storage. While nonencapsulated/free cells declined from 9.44 to 6.41 log CFU/ml during same storage period. Likewise, during in vitro GIT assay, encapsulated probiotic with Ca-ALG and WPC showed 0.95 and 1.13 log reduction, respectively. On other hand, free probiotics showed significant 3.03 log reduction. Overall, microencapsulated probiotic exhibited better survival as compared to free cells. The objective of this work was to explore the effect of two encapsulating polysaccharides (sodium alginate and carrageenan) on the viability of probiotic bacteria (L. acidophilus) in ice cream and under simulated gastrointestinal (GIT) conditions. For the purpose, probiotic cells were encapsulated in sodium alginate and carrageenan by an encapsulator using standard operating conditions. Ice cream was manufactured by adding free and microencapsulated probiotics. The survival of free and encapsulated probiotics was monitored over a period of 120 days at - 20 °C. Furthermore, the survival of free and encapsulated probiotic bacteria under the simulated GIT conditions was investigated. The results of the study showed that encapsulation significantly (p < 0.05) improved the cell survival of probiotics in ice cream compared to free cells (non-encapsulated). The viable cell count of probiotic bacteria in the free-state in ice cream was 9.97 log cfu/ml at 0 day that decreased to 6.12 log cfu/ml after 120 days. However, encapsulation improved the viability of the probiotics in the prepared ice cream and GIT. The cell count of probiotics encapsulated with sodium alginate and carrageenan was 9.91 log cfu/ml and 9.89 log cfu/ml respectively at 0 day that decreased to 8.74 log cfu/ml and 8.39 log cfu/ml respectively after 120 days. Similarly, during simulated gastrointestinal assay, the survival rate of encapsulated probiotic bacteria in simulated gastric solution and intestinal solutions was higher than that of free cells. In the case of encapsulated bacteria, only three log while for free cells seven log reduction was recorded. Sodium alginate microcapsules exhibited better release profile than carrageenan. Conclusively, the incorporation of encapsulated probiotics had a significant effect on quality parameters and sensorial characteristics of ice cream.

Encapsulation and storage exhibited a significant ( p  < .05) effect on different parameters of yogurt. An increasing trend in syneresis and acidity while a decreasing trend in viscosity, pH, viability, and stability were observed. The value of syneresis increased from 2.27 ± 0.17 to 2.9 ± 0.14 and acidity from 0.48 ± 0.04 to 0.64 ± 0.01 during 4 weeks of storage. The value of viscosity decreased from 3.68 ± 0.21 to 2.42 ± 0.09 and pH from 4.88 ± 0.31to 4.43 ± 0.36 during 28 days of storage. Unencapsulated (free) cells exhibited poor survival. The viable cell count of probiotic bacteria in the free-state in yogurt was 9.97 logs CFU/ml at zero-day that decreased to 6.12 log CFU/ml after 28 days. However, encapsulation improved the viability of the probiotics in the prepared yogurt and GIT. The cell count of probiotics encapsulated with sodium alginate and carrageenan was 9.91 logs CFU/ml and 9.89 logs CFU/ml, respectively, at zero-day that decreased to 8.74 logs CFU/ml and 8.39 log CFU/ml, respectively. Lactobacillus plantarum are amongst the diversified lactic acid bacteria (LAB) species which are being utilized abundantly in the food industry. Numerous L. plantarum strains have been reported to produce several antimicrobial compounds. Diacetyl, hydrogen peroxide, organic acids, as well as bacteriocins can also be exemplified by a variable spectrum of actions. The current study was intended to conduct the screening and characterization of antimicrobial prospective of L . plantarum from traditional Inner Mongolian fermented hard cheese. Foodborne pathogens , Salmonella t yphimuri um , Esch erichia coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes , and Staphylococcus aureus , were examined by using the Oxford cup technique and the mixed culture inhibition assays. The resulting analyses disclosed that L. plantarum KLDS1.0344 indicated broad antimicrobial spectrum against all selected pathogens as compared to other LAB used in this study. Additionally, the decrement of the pathogen population was observed up to 3.47 logs in mixed culture inhibition assays. L. plantarum KLDS 1.0344 acid production was recorded up to 71.8 ± 3.59 °D in mixed culture while antimicrobial particles released in cell free supernatants demonstrated bacteriocin-like characteristics showing substantial pH stability (2.0-6.0), proteolytic enzyme reduced the antibacterial activity (15.2 ± 0.6 mm-20.4 ± 0.8 mm), heat stability (20 min at 120 °C) against selected pathogens. Moreover, the spectrum range of antimicrobial peptides after the partial purification was decreased as compared to the crude bacteriocin-like compound. The SDS-PAGE analysis showed the molecular weight range of partially purified bacteriocin from 12 to 45 kDa. After analyzing the obtained data from the current experimentation showed that the capability of L. plantarum KLDS 1.0344 to oppose the pathogen growth in vitro relies on the occurrence of organic acids along with bacteriocin-like compounds proving L. plantarum KLDS 1.0344 as a potentially appropriate candidate as an alternative bio-control agent against foodborne pathogens., Competing Interests: All of the authors solemnly declare that, there is no conflict of interest in the present research work.

Aerosol-assisted chemical vapour deposition (AACVD) of Cd[(SPiPr2)(SePiPr2)N]2 yields hexagonal cadmium selenide and monoclinic cadmium phosphide films on glass substrates between 475 and 525 °C at different argon flow rates. The films were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). All the results of XRD, EDAX and XPS are in agreement with our previous investigations on Cd[(SePiPr2)2N]2. A breakdown mechanism is proposed based on mass spectra and density functional theory calculations. A large peak at m/z 207 in the mass spectra, previously assigned by us as a new aromatic species, is also observed for this complex.

Background: Spices and their bioactive components are more promising attractions for their inclusion in diet-based regimes to improve human health. These are sources of natural antioxidants and play an important role in the chemoprevention of diseases and aging. The aim of the current study was to explore the antioxidant potential of cinnamon; a widely used spice throughout the world., Methods: The current research was aimed to investigate the antioxidant potential of cinnamon extract. For the purpose, cinnamon sticks were procured from local super market, while palm oil was obtained from local oil industry. The resultant extract was analyzed for its antioxidant activity through total phenolic content (TPC), free radical scavenging activity (DPPH assay), and total antioxidant activity was measured by ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) test. The shelf life of palm oil was checked by adding cinnamon extract in oil at different levels i.e. , 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20 and 0.25%, to compare the antioxidant potential of the extract whereas, T o acted as control and T BHA @ 0.1% was used as synthetic antioxidant in the oil samples. The oil samples were analyzed for rancidity check during storage (after every seven days for a storage period of four weeks)., Results: The results indicated that total phenolic contents (TPC); 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) values of cinnamon extract were as 355.01 ± 8.34 gallic acid equivalent per gram (mg GAE/g), 90.18 ± 2.12 (%) and 132.82 ± 3.12 (μmol/g), respectively. The oxidative parameters for treatments i.e., T o , T BHA , T 1 , T 2 , T 3 , T 4 , T 5 were recorded as peroxide value (2.61 ± 0.07, 2.42 ± 0.08, 2.57 ± 0.05, 2.56 ± 0.03, 2.54 ± 0.02, 2.54 ± 0.01, 2.46 ± 0.06 meq/kg, respectively), free fatty acids (0.601 ± 0.05, 0.522 ± 0.02, 0.580 ± 0.07, 0.572 ± 0.03, 0.56 ± 00.07, 0.552 ± 0.03, 0.536 ± 0.05%, respectively), TBA value (22.4 ± 1.45, 20.1 ± 0.73, 21.8 ± 0.42, 21.2 ± 1.56, 20.7 ± 0.48, 20.5 ± 0.59, 20.2 ± 0.91 μg/kg, respectively) and iodine value (52.82 ± 2.12, 52.71 ± 2.38, 52.68 ± 2.96, 52.97 ± 2.14, 52.93 ± 2.12, 53.15 ± 2.38, 52.71 ± 2.96, respectively). Overall, the statistical analysis indicated that all parameters regarding oil stability i.e., peroxide value (PV), free fatty acid content, (FFA) thiobarbituric acid (TBA) value and iodine value (IV) were significant with respect to treatments and storage., Conclusion: From the present study, it can be concluded that the cinnamon extract proved effective in reducing the lipid oxidation of palm oil and it can be successfully used in place of synthetic antioxidants in food preparations.

Aerosol-assisted chemical vapour deposition (AACVD) of Cd[(SeP i Pr 2 ) 2 N] 2 is shown to deposit cadmium selenide and/or cadmium phosphide on glass substrates, depending upon the growth conditions. The phase, structure, morphology and composition of the films were characterised by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The XRD indicated a hexagonal phase for cadmium selenide, whilst cadmium phosphide was monoclinic. Pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and density functional theory were used to deduce a breakdown mechanism for the deposition that favoured the formation of a new aromatic i Pr 2 N 2 P 3 + ion.

A room temperature solid-state reaction has been used to prepare crystalline tin-doped ZnO. Zinc nitrate hexahydrate, cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide, stannic chloride pentahydrate and sodium hydroxide with proper ratios were ground together. As-synthesized samples were characterized by inductively coupled plasma analysis (ICP), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD); The products were of different morphologies, well dispersed and exhibited good crystallinity, it is also found that the growth direction and morphology of ZnO depend on the amount of Sn doped, which is mainly caused by the difference in sizes between Zn and Sn atoms as well as the change of pH value. Moreover, gas sensing and photocatalytic properties of the obtained products were studied. The materials showed a high gas response to ethanol vapor, and the gas response can reach a maximum of R(a)/R(g) = 124. In addition, tin-doped ZnO materials exhibited improved photocatalytic performance toward methyl orange (MO) solution under a current density of 0.03 mg L(-1) comparison with undoped ZnO., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Truly alloyed PbS(x)Se(1-x) (x = 0-1) nanocrystals (∼5 nm in size) have been prepared, and their resulting optical properties are red-shifted systematically as the sulfur content of the materials increases. Their optical properties are discussed using a modified Vegard's approach and the bowing parameter for these nanoalloys is reported for the first time. The alloyed structure of the nanocrystals is supported by the energy-filtered transmission electron microscope images of the samples, which show a homogeneous distribution of sulfur and selenium within the nanocrystals. Aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition of Cd[(SP(i)Pr(2))(2)N](2) leads to the growth of cadmium sulfide and/or phosphide thin films on glass. Decomposition of the precursor has been studied by pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and modeled by density functional theory.

The low temperature growth of crystalline PbS films has been achieved on plastic substrates by CVD using a xanthate. The possible mechanism involved in this low temperature deposition has been probed by density functional theory calculations.

The series of nickel dichalcogenoimidodiphosphinates [Ni{(i)Pr(2)P(X1)NP(X2)(i)Pr(2)}(2)]: X1 = S, X2 = Se (1), X1 = X2 = S (2), and X1 = X2 = Se (3) have been successfully used as single-source precursors (SSPs) to deposit thin films of nickel sulfide, selenide or phosphide; the material deposited depended on both temperature and method used for the deposition. Aerosol-assisted (AA) chemical vapour deposition (CVD) and low-pressure (LP) CVD were used. The as-deposited films were characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). A variety of phases including: Ni(2)P, Ni(0.85)Se and NiS(1.03) were deposited under different conditions. The mechanism of decomposition to the phosphide, selenide, or sulfide was studied by pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS) and modelled by density functional theory (DFT).

Keratosis follicularis or Darier's disease (DD), a rare autosomal dominant disorder is characterised clinically by appearance of multiple, prurutic, discrete, scaly papules affecting seborrheic areas coupled with palmar pits, nail changes and mucosal involvement. Histologicaly the lesions show suprabasal clefts with acantholytic and dyskeratotic cells. We report a case of 35 years old woman with typical clinical and histological features of Darier's disease.

Formation of unusual CdTe rods on Si/SiO(2) and gold coated Si/SiO(2) surfaces is reported from chemical vapor deposition of Cd[(TeP(i)Pr(2))(2)N](2).

We report a transient absorption and luminescence study addressing the charge separation, recombination, and regeneration reactions at nanostructured metal oxide/PbS quantum dot/organic hole conductor heterojunctions. We show that yields of charge separation are significantly higher at PbS/SnO(2) interfaces relative to PbS/TiO(2) interfaces, and conclude that this behavior is a result of the ca. 300-500 meV lower conduction band edge in SnO(2) as compared to TiO(2). We also report a correlation between the PbS particle size and the yield of charge separation at PbS/SnO(2) interfaces, with a smaller PbS particle radius resulting a higher yield of charge separation. Finally we investigated the regeneration of the photooxidized PbS by an organic hole transporting material, namely, spiro-OMeTAD. The overall spiro-OMeTAD(+) yield is found to be 27% at a SnO(2)/PbS (approximately 3 nm diameter)/spiro-OMeTAD heterojunction. The addition of a lithium salt was found to raise the overall spiro-OMeTAD(+) yield from its initial value of 27% (where no Li(+) is present) to 50%. We believe this to be a result of an increase in the primary charge injection yield to near unity as the SnO(2) conduction band is lowered (with increasing [Li(+)]), increasing the driving force for electron injection. The present findings are discussed with relevance to the design of PbS-sensitized metal oxide layers for DSSCs.

Group 14 metal complexes of heavy chalcogen-centered anions, M[(TeP(i)Pr(2))(2)N](2) (5, M = Sn; 6, M = Pb) and M(TeP(i)Pr(2)NP(i)Pr(2)Se)(2) (7, M = Sn; 8, M = Pb), were synthesized in 64-89% yields by metathesis of alkali-metal salts of the ligands with group 14 metal dihalides. Crystallographic characterization of the complexes revealed that 5, 6, and 8 engage in metal...chalcogen secondary bonds to generate dimers, whereas 7 is monomeric in the solid state. Multinuclear ((1)H, (31)P, (77)Se, and (125)Te) solution NMR data for these homoleptic complexes evinced dynamic behavior leading to the equivalence of the two ligand environments. The Pb(II) complex 6 was utilized as a single-source precursor to micrometer-scale lead telluride particles via two divergent techniques: aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition of the complex in THF/CH(2)Cl(2) solution onto glass substrates yielded rectangular prisms, while solution injection of 6 in tri-n-octylphosphine onto Si/SiO(2)(100) substrates heated to 200-220 degrees C resulted in the formation of wires. PXRD and EDX analysis of the products confirmed the phase purity of the PbTe materials.

ZnO hexagonal single-crystal slices with predominant (0001) and (0001) facets have been fabricated by poly(ethylene glycol)-assisted chemical bath deposition.

The title compound, {(C(6)H(16)NO)[Cu(2)(CH(3)COO)(5)]·CH(2)Cl(2)}(n), consists of acetate-bridged Cu(2)(CH(3)COO)(4) units that are connected via another acetate anion at each terminus to form infinite anionic [{Cu(2)(CH(3)COO)(4)}(CH(3)COO)](n) chains along [100]. The connecting acetate is hydrogen bonded to the dieth-yl(2-hydroxy-ethyl)ammonium cation, and the dichloro-methane solvent mol-ecule fills the remaining voids in the structure. The O-Cu-Cu angles along the polymeric chain are nearly linear [175.49 (5)°], but individual O-Cu-Cu-O units along the chain are bent and rotated against each other at the bridging acetate ion. Translation of each Cu(2)(CH(3)COO)(4) unit along the chain, represented by the least-squares plane of the two copper ions along with four of the acetate O atoms, rotated these units by 35.16 (3)°.

The reaction of two equivalents of (TMEDA)Li[(EP(i)Pr(2))(TeP(i)Pr(2))N] (E = S, Se) with NiBr(2)(DME) in THF at 23 degrees C yields homoleptic complexes of heterodichalcogenido PNP ligands Ni[(EP(i)Pr(2))(TeP(i)Pr(2))N](2) (2, E = S; 3, E = Se). Similarly, the complexes Ni[(P(i)Pr(2))(EP(i)Pr(2))N](2) (4, E = Se; 5, E = Te) are obtained by in situ deprotonation of the neutral monochalcogenides E=P(i)Pr(2)NP(H)(i)Pr(2) (E = Se, Te) with (n)BuLi in THF at -78 degrees C followed by addition of NiBr(2)(DME). The complexes 2-5 have been characterised by multinuclear ((1)H, (31)P, (77)Se and (125)Te) NMR spectroscopy in solution and by X-ray crystallography in the solid state, the results of which show that they all exist as the square planar, trans isomers. Aerosol-assisted chemical vapour deposition (AACVD) of Ni[(SeP(i)Pr(2))(TeP(i)Pr(2))N](2) yields crystalline Ni(0.51)Te films at 450-500 degrees C, which were analysed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

There is a need for a method to facilitate the development of novel, reproducible colloidal surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates to encourage the use of SERS in applied studies. In this study we show for the first time that by using suitably designed SERS experiments in conjunction with multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), an objective assessment of colloidal SERS reproducibility can be made. This is demonstrated with the analyte cresyl violet, but could be extended to any analyte of interest for which reproducible SERS data are needed.

The enhanced magneto-optical properties of nanoscaled lanthanide chalogenide semiconductors which have a wide energy gap were observed at around 500 nm for the first time. The nanoscaled semiconductors, Eu(1-x)Se nanoparticles 1 (cubic shapes) and 2 (spherical shapes), were synthesized by the thermal reduction of Eu(III) ion with organic ligands containing Se atoms. The resulting Eu(1-x)Se nanoparticles were characterized by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, superconducting quantum interference devices magnetometer, and microwave induced plasma atomic emission spectroscopy measurements. The particle grain sizes of 1 and 2 were estimated to be 11 and 20 nm, respectively. The concentration-normalized Veldet constants (the magnitude of the Faraday effect) of Eu(1-x)Se nanoparticles were much larger than those of corresponding bulk EuSe and EuS nanoparticles.

Interest in metal telluride thin films as components in electronic devices has grown recently. This tutorial review describes the use of single-source precursors for the preparation of metal telluride materials by aerosol-assisted chemical vapour deposition (AACVD) and acquaints the reader with the basic techniques of materials characterization. The challenges in the design and synthesis of suitable precursors are discussed, focusing on metal complexes of the recently-developed imino-bis(diisopropylphosphine telluride) ligand. The generation of thin films and nanoplates of CdTe, Sb(2)Te(3) and In(2)Te(3) from these precursors are used as illustrative examples.

Reactions of Na(tmeda)[N((i)Pr(2)PTe)(2)] with CuCl, AgI or AuCl (in the presence of PPh(3)) in THF produced the coinage metal ditelluroimidodiphosphinate complexes {Cu[N((i)Pr(2)PTe)(2)]}(3), (5), {Ag[N((i)Pr(2)PTe)(2)]}(6) (6) and Au(PPh(3))[N((i)Pr(2)PTe)(2)] (7), respectively. Complexes 5, 6 and 7 were characterized in the solid state by X-ray crystallography. Complex 5 is trimeric and exhibits a highly distorted Cu(3)Te(3) ring. In contrast, the Ag(I) complex 6 is a hexamer, and forms a twelve-membered Ag(6)Te(6) ring. The replacement of the (i)Pr groups on phosphorus by Ph results in an intriguing structural change to a tetramer with a boat-shaped Ag(4)Te(4) ring in {Ag[N(Ph(2)PTe)(2)}(4).2THF (8). The gold(I) complex 7 is monomeric. Aerosol-assisted chemical vapour deposition (AACVD) of compounds 5, 6 and 7 yields CuTe, Ag(7)Te(4), AuTe(2) and Au films, respectively. The films were grown at temperatures of 300-500 degrees C and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX).

A series of N-alkyldithiocarbamato complexes [M(S2CNHR)2] (M=Cd(II), Zn(II); R=C2H5, C4H9, C6H13, C12H25) have been synthesised and characterized. The decomposition of these complexes to sulfates has been investigated, and a mechanism proposed. The structures of [Zn(S2CNHHex)2], [Cd(SO4)2(NC5H5)4)]n and [Cd(SO4)2(NC5H5)2(H2O)2)]n have been determined by X-ray single crystal method. The cadmium complex [Cd(S2CNHC12H25)2] and zinc complex [Zn(S2CNHC6H13)2] were used as single-source precursors to synthesize CdS and ZnS nanoparticles, respectively. The synthesis of CdS nanoparticles was carried under various thermolysis conditions and changes in the shape of derived nanoparticles were studied by transmission electron microscope (TEM).

Facile and reproducible methods for the syntheses of bis(di-iso-propylselenophosphinyl)selenide ((i)Pr2PSe)2Se (1), bis(di-iso-propylselenophosphinyl)diselenide ((i)Pr2PSe)2Se2 (2) and bis(di-phenylselenophosphinyl)selenide (Ph2PSe)2Se (3) is reported.

The reactions of bis(dialkylselenophosphinyl)selenide with a series of metals have been investigated: synthesis of several metal selenophosphinate complexes and their structures are reported.

Aerosol-assisted chemical vapor deposition (AACVD) of Sb[(TePiPr2)2N]3 results in pure hexagonal Sb2Te3 nanoplates between 375 and 475 degrees C on glass substrates, with a potential for enhanced thermoelectric properties for novel nanodevices.

EuS nanocrystals, with an average diameter of 9 nm, have been synthesized by the photolysis of Na[Eu(S2CEt2)4].3.5H2O; the first quantum confined particles of EuS to be reported.

Compounds of type [(Ph3P)2AgIn(SC(O)R)4] (R = Me (1), Ph (2)) are excellent single-source precursors for AgInS2 bulk materials by pyrolysis and AgIn5S8 films by aerosol assisted chemical vapour deposition (AACVD).
