Abstract

The Arewa Atlas Team (AAT) in northern Nigeria has set an example for a robust methodological data collection and made a big impact for the African Bird Atlas Project. To broaden national bird atlas projects and coverage across the continent, this paper reports on the activities and protocols of the AAT. We set out how we have galvanised bird clubs and bird club members to participate in this important monitoring project. We then focus on a bird atlas expedition conducted to the Bauchi State as an example. The outing was carried out from 24 to 28 September 2020 in line with the BirdMap protocol. For the first time, the AAT atlased 100 pentads and recorded 8 591 individual birds of 222 species (24.21% of Nigerian birds) from 67 families. We explore what can be done with these data, by presenting a summary of descriptions of the birds observed. For instance, we recorded 184 resident species, nine intra-African and 24 Palearctic migrants. The highest bird abundance (120 individuals) was recorded at 11°00′26.9″ N, 9°29′46.5″ E, pentad 1105C0925. Furthermore, the Rock Firefinch Lagonosticta sanguinodorsalis was out-of-range from Lumba. The Tawny Eagle Aquila rapax (Vulnerable) and Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus (Near Threatened) were species of conservation concern. Results of this survey shows that citizen science is a powerful tool to make rapid biodiversity assessments of bird species richness and abundance and provides insights into bird occurrence and composition. This can be extended to distribution over time at a local geographic scale. Continuous efforts to map bird distributions are therefore recommended, mostly in regions and countries where atlas projects have not been established or still in the formative stages. It is important that bird atlas teams maximise ways to accomplish more noteworthy coverage in their respective national bird atlas projects and here we outline how we accomplished this as motivation and a model for the African Bird Atlas Project. Abstract

Wolbachia are intracellular endosymbionts of several invertebrate taxa, including insects and nematodes. Although Wolbachia DNA has been detected in ticks, its presence is generally associated with parasitism by insects. To determine whether or not Wolbachia can infect and grow in tick cells, cell lines from three tick species, Ixodes scapularis, Ixodes ricinus and Rhipicephalus microplus, were inoculated with Wolbachia strains wStri and wAlbB isolated from mosquito cell lines. Homogenates prepared from fleas collected from cats in Malaysia were inoculated into an I. scapularis cell line. Bacterial growth and identity were monitored by microscopy and PCR amplification and sequencing of fragments of Wolbachia genes. The wStri strain infected Ixodes spp. cells and was maintained through 29 passages. The wAlbB strain successfully infected Ixodes spp. and R. microplus cells and was maintained through 2–5 passages. A novel strain of Wolbachia belonging to the supergroup F, designated wCfeF, was isolated in I. scapularis cells from a pool of Ctenocephalides sp. cat fleas and maintained in vitro through two passages over nine months. This is the first confirmed isolation of a Wolbachia strain from a flea and the first isolation of any Wolbachia strain outside the “pandemic” A and B supergroups. The study demonstrates that tick cells can host multiple Wolbachia strains, and can be added to panels of insect cell lines to improve success rates in isolation of field strains of Wolbachia.

Abstract

Background Multidrug resistance (MDR) is a major clinical problem in tertiary hospitals in Tanzania and jeopardizes the life of neonates in critical care units (CCUs). To better understand methods for prevention of MDR infections, this study aimed to determine, among other factors, the role of MDR-Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) contaminating neonatal cots and hands of mothers as possible role in transmission of bacteremia at Bugando Medical Centre (BMC), Mwanza, Tanzania. Methods This cross-sectional, hospital-based study was conducted among neonates and their mothers in a neonatal intensive care unit and a neonatology unit at BMC from December 2018 to April 2019. Blood specimens (n = 200) were sub-cultured on 5% sheep blood agar (SBA) and MacConkey agar (MCA) plates. Other specimens (200 neonatal rectal swabs, 200 maternal hand swabs and 200 neonatal cot swabs) were directly inoculated on MCA plates supplemented with 2 μg/ml cefotaxime (MCA-C) for screening of GNB resistant to third generation cephalosporins, r-3GCs. Conventional biochemical tests, Kirby-Bauer technique and resistance to cefoxitin 30 μg were used for identification of bacteria, antibiotic susceptibility testing and detection of MDR-GNB and screening of potential Amp-C beta lactamase producing GNB, respectively. Results The prevalence of culture confirmed bacteremia was 34.5% of which 85.5% were GNB. Fifty-five (93.2%) of GNB isolated from neonatal blood specimens were r-3GCs. On the other hand; 43% of neonates were colonized with GNB r-3GCs, 32% of cots were contaminated with GNB r-3GCs and 18.5% of hands of neonates’ mothers were contaminated with GNB r-3GCs. The prevalences of MDR-GNB isolated from blood culture and GNB r-3GCs isolated from neonatal colonization, cots and mothers’ hands were 96.6, 100, 100 and 94.6%, respectively. Significantly, cyanosis (OR[95%CI]: 3.13[1.51–6.51], p = 0.002), jaundice (OR[95%CI]: 2.10[1.07–4.14], p = 0.031), number of invasive devices (OR[95%CI]: 2.52[1.08–5.85], p = 0.031) and contaminated cot (OR[95%CI]: 2.39[1.26–4.55], p = 0.008) were associated with bacteremia due to GNB. Use of tap water only (OR[95%CI]: 2.12[0.88–5.09], p = 0.040) was protective for bacteremia due to GNB. Conclusion High prevalence of MDR-GNB bacteremia and intestinal colonization, and MDR-GNB contaminating cots and mothers’ hands was observed. Improved cots decontamination strategies is crucial to limit the spread of MDR-GNB. Further, clinical presentations and water use should be considered in administration of empirical therapy whilst awaiting culture results.

209. Removal of Organic Pollutants from Effluent of Anaerobic Digester Using Hydrochars Produced from Faecal Simulant and Sewage Sludge

Abstract

Hydrochars produced from hydrothermal carbonisation of faecal simulant (FS) at 180 °C for 30 min and sewage sludge treated via CAMBI process at 165 °C for 30 min were used for adsorption of organic pollutants in effluent from an anaerobic digester (AD). The adsorption potential of the hydrochars investigated was compared with that of a commercial powdered activated carbon (PAC). It was found that the CAMBI and FS hydrochars were effective only after chemical activation. KOH activation increased chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal from 33.0 to 59.6% and 75.2% for FS and CAMBI, respectively. Extra activation with HCl improved the adsorption efficiency of FS, increasing COD removal to 79.3%, but not for the CAMBI hydrochar even though its surface area was increased. Acidic pH aided organics removal for both hydrochars. PAC adsorption capacity was the highest (> 90%), and this was not affected by pH. All the adsorbents could successfully remove the organics in a very short time as 30 min. The optimum dosage of the hydrochars to reach a high uptake of organics was 30.0 g/L. The adsorption reaction followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model for all the hydrochars. The adsorption onto the hydrochars correlated well with Temkin isotherm model and followed a type II and IV isotherm type, except PAC which was described by the Langmuir isotherm with a high adsorption capacity of 400.0 mg/g. The study demonstrated that hydrochars of FS and CAMBI activated with KOH are efficient and sustainable adsorbents for the removal of organics from AD effluent.

Abstract

The efficiency of water flooding processes can be improved by installing intelligent wells which are good candidates for control and optimization. Optimal control theory based on adjoint formulations was found to be efficient for reservoir optimization. However, this solution approach is local and may not be suitable for comparing design alternatives. In this work, an approach for determining an optimal starting point for optimal control theory procedure was developed to give near global optima. The performance in terms of net present value (NPV) of two forms of five-spot pattern was compared. The method results to similar performances of the two alternatives because it was formulated to give true optimal solution trajectories. It was found that regular five-spot pattern results to a NPV in excess of $4,900 over inverted design. Respective increase in oil and water productions of 0.23% and 0.22% were recorded for former design against the later.Keywords: intelligent wells; adjoint; optimal control theory; global optimum; water flooding.

Abstract

Monitoring cattle behavior in the grazing field has been a perpetual challenge in animal husbandry and for nomadic herdsmen. Various methods have been used in the past to monitor the behavior of cattle and their grazing patterns. Most of the grazing patterns in the nomadic system demand that both the herdsmen and their cattle cover some distance from dawn to dusk searching for greener pasture, this, and unavailability of the greener pasture sometimes result to tiredness and exhaustion which in turn trigger the change in behavior exhibited by the cattle. The economic implication of such a change in the cattle behavior might be catastrophic if not given the necessary attention. Presented in this paper is a framework for modeling the behavior of cattle grazing patterns including monitoring of their movement and the distribution of grazing events in the paddock. The correlation between the pasture condition and the grazing behavior of cattle in the paddock was analyzed. Global positioning system (GPS) monitoring collar for cattle was used to monitor the behavior and to detect the change in grazing patterns of the cattle.

Abstract

Increasing demand for wood and fossil fuel with limited availability has resulted in environmental pollution. Availability of energy for cooking remains a major concern for average Nigerian. Cooking is an essential daily household activity and it consumes significant quantities of energy and human effort. The hazardous effect of wood and fossil fuel coupled with the cumbersome nature in cooking with wood and fossil fuel make it necessary for search of an alternative means of energy that is renewable. In this research work, design and construction of an improved biogas fuel stove were carried out. The stove comprises of a combustion chamber where the biogas fuel is burned by natural convection mode. The biogas stove consists of the following major components; burner, injector opening, mixing tube, burner support, etc. The biogas stove was constructed from medium carbon steel material. The choice of the selected material has to do with cost, and local availability. The distance between the cooking pot and the stove burner is 40mm, and the gap between each of the port is 5 mm. Mixing tube lengths of 80mm, tube inner diameter of 15mm, and gap diameter of 2.5mm between each ports were adopted in this design. The results obtained show that an average efficiency, minimal efficiency, optimal efficiency of 56.894 %, 46.02 %, and 63.87 % respectively were obtained. Also, an average mass of water of 3.5 kg, an average evaporated mass of water of 0.0208 kg, and an average mass of fuel of 0.0551 kg were obtained. With this designed and adoption of biogas fuel stove as means of cooking, the usage of wood and fossil fuel will be reduce, thus preventing the liberation of hazardous gases to our eco-system.

Abstract

This experiment was conducted over two (2016 and 2017) Cropping Seasons to investigate grass-legume ensiling compatibilities, at National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI) Shika. Field grown forages were harvested at 90 days post planting and ensiled for 21 days at a ratio of 70:30 in a 2 x 3 factorial arrangement laid in a Complete Randomized Design to give six treatments; T1: sole Elephant grass (SE), T2: sole maize (SM), T3: maize/lablab (ML), T4: maize/mucuna (MM), T5: Elephant grass/lablab (EL) and T6: Elephant grass/mucuna (EM), replicated three times. Results showed that the pH value of the compounded silages were moderate to fair, ranging from 3.87 for EL mixed silage to 5.99 dark green putrid silage produced by ML mixed silage. The result showed that effect of legumes in mixed grass-legumes silage significantly (P <0.05) affected chemical compositions of the compounded silages. The CP content ranged from 9.0% in SM silage to 15.36% in ML prepared silage. The study shows that silage compounded from maize/lablab produced dark green silage with high crude protein (15.36 %), ash (19.59%), calcium (0.31 %), magnesium (0.33 %) and sodium (2.13 %). Fiber fraction was significantly different (P<0.05) among the compounded silages. Highest ADF (44.50%), NDF (58.90%) and CNLS (39.30%) were recorded in SE silage. However, SM recorded higher HC (17.89%). ADL content was similar across all the treatments. It can also be concluded from this trial that for higher crude protein and minerals composition, silages should be compounded using Maize/Lablab harvested at 90 days post planting. Elephant grass and Mucuna legume produced good silage but cannot replace Maize and Lablab silage in terms of quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; This declaration, signed by an interdisciplinary task force of 234 experts from 83 different countries with different backgrounds, highlights the threat posed by antimicrobial resistance and the need for appropriate use of antibiotic agents and antifungal agents in hospitals worldwide especially focusing on surgical infections. As such, it is our intent to raise awareness among healthcare workers and improve antimicrobial prescribing. To facilitate its dissemination, the declaration was translated in different languages.

Abstract

This declaration, signed by an interdisciplinary task force of 234 experts from 83 different countries with different backgrounds, highlights the threat posed by antimicrobial resistance and the need for appropriate use of antibiotic agents and antifungal agents in hospitals worldwide especially focusing on surgical infections. As such, it is our intent to raise awareness among healthcare workers and improve antimicrobial prescribing. To facilitate its dissemination, the declaration was translated in different languages.
