The authors discuss a school-based community study by Paul Moran and colleagues regarding self-harm in adolescents. Results of the study show that 8% of adolescents in a sample of almost 2,000 Australian students in Victoria are self-harmed caused by several factors including heavy alcohol use, smoking, and antisocial behavior. They discuss the relevance of their behavior for future mental health. They also explain why self-harm is less common in later adolescence and early adulthood.
