The article reports that it was the year of victory against the Japanese, and it was a year in which the Communist boss Mao Tse-t'ung's attempts to seize power were at frantic pitch. At that time, leaving the home district of Yung-cheng County in Hunan Province was especially difficult; besides the inconvenience of transportation, the bandits who infested the hills were also an obstacle. Since the bandits holed up by day and came out at night, often showing up where least expected, a traveler who was not careful could be carried off. After being carried off, victims were stripped of every shred of clothing and either beaten half to death or buried alive. The second reason was that the scenic beauty temperate climate abundant natural wealth and greater number of "good friends" in the South made an environment in which attainment in spiritual study was quite easy. For these two reasons, many teachers who held high hopes for their disciples would often encourage them in every way to study in the South, hoping they would become great lights of Buddhist doctrine and so "benefit extensively the worlds of man and heaven."

A response is presented by Alexandra Monroe, an art curator at the Guggenheim Museum, to a round table discussion of the art exhibition "The Third Mind: American Artists Contemplate Asia 1860-1989," presented at the Guggenheim Museum, New York City , in January 2009. The art show focused on the complicated relations between American artists and the philosophy and culture of Asia. Among other issues Monroe advocates for the position that Asian influence on American artists was not erratic or eccentric but steady and continuous.
