Aging causes decrements in information-processing speed, working memory capability and declarative learning in adulthood. A study comparing a cross section of adults on various cognitive tasks reveals that working memory capability and processing speed are the resources mediating age differences in declarative learning. The contribution of working memory capability to declarative learning is much larger than that of processing speed.

Cognitive processes significantly mediate the relationship between spatial abilities and environmental learning. As evidenced in two laboratory experiments, spatial-sequential memory has a mediatory effect on the relationship between general spatial ability and topological knowledge. Perspective-taking latency mediates the interaction between general spatial ability and Euclidean direction knowledge. The study supports a five-factor model involving basic spatial ability and environmental learning factors.

Stringent accuracy specifications required that particular care be taken in the provision of geodetic control for the construction of the Superconducting Super Collider. The design and implementation of the surface geodetic control networks are described. The horizontal network was realized by Global Positioning System measurements, and the vertical network by means of precise geodetic leveling. The highly expansive soils in the project area required that the horizontal and vertical surface monuments be designed to be stable for the duration of the construction of the project. The methodology adopted for the densification of horizontal and vertical control from the surface networks to the shaft area, and an innovative technique used for the transfer of control into the underground facilities are described. The underground networks were designed so as to minimize the geometric weakness inherent in tunnel surveys. In the interests of economy, removable tunnel brackets were developed and used for the large number of horizontal underground monuments. Survey results for five tunnel half-sector breakthroughs are reported.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide aviation has been greatly and negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Right from the outset, organizations, businesses, and individuals within the aviation industries have faced unique and complex challenges. Contingency planning has had to adapt. In this presentation, the author will provide an updated Systematic overview and update to the Aviation Multi- Layered Disease Defense Strategy (AMLDDS) and discuss Emerging risk-mitigations (application of Reason Swiss Cheese Theory to inflight disease transmission/translocation). Strategies will include current and emerging technologies to include the use of airborne Ultraviolet (UV-C) irradiation. Updates on three AsMA AMHP Blue Journal UV-C paper submissions undergoing peer review and AsMA UV-C Resolution 2023-01, as well as feedback from WHO, ICAO, CAPSCA, AHC, ICASM international conference presentations will be discussed. OVERVIEW: The author served as the AsMA representative to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and Collaborative Arrangement for the Prevention and Management of Public Health Events in Civil Aviation (CAPSCA) during the last three years of the COVID-19 pandemic and has formed a unique perspective and best business practices. As the pandemic evolved, so did knowledge, attitudes, and expectations. The pandemic has created unique opportunities for learning and scientific technologic advances. Emerging layers of disease risk mitigation protection including the use of UV-C at safe levels and how they can reduce translocation and transmission of disease in flight will be discussed. DISCUSSION: After a thorough systematic review of subject publications resulting in three AMHP AsMA Blue Journal submissions, the author will discuss existing and emerging infectious diseases risk mitigation strategies critical to aviation - COVID-19 and beyond, and will provide an overview and update to the AMLDDS and discuss Emerging risk-mitigation (evolutionary application of James Reason, Swiss Cheese Model/Theory which was successfully adapted to international COVID-19 pandemic response by ICAO and CAPSCA. Lessons learned and emerging technologies will continue to reduce inflight disease transmission/translocation of disease and enhance future pandemic responses. Learning Objectives 1. The influence of intersublattice covalence on epsilon(sub 1) in {Y2.53Bi0.47}[Fe2](Fe3)O12 specimens is examined. An average decline of 25 percent in the epsilon(sub 1) intensity was found over the spectral band of interest for both diluted specimens.

Examined expressions of spatial knowledge of first-, fourth-, and sixth-grade children who performed model construction, verbal description, and route reversal tasks after mastering a pedestrian maze. Age-related differences were found in rate of learning the maze, and equivalent abilities in sequencing intersections and route reversal. (SAK)

The theory of enhanced magneto-optical effect in YBiFeO12, based on the covalent reactions of Bi(super 3+) and Fe(super 3+) ions, is validated by molecular orbital estimates of excited-state spin-orbit coupling multiplet splitting experiments. The application of self consistent approximation to the bonding-antibonding hybrid helps determine the splitting energies.

The use of the permittivity tensor for the interpretation of magneto-optical spectra was evaluated. The results showed that the technique is accurate to the third order and was far more accurate than conventional resonance approximations. An exact expression for the diamagnetic case was a good approximation for all realistic situations.

The causes of gaint Faraday rotation and ellipticity in Bi-substituted magnetic garnets were investigated. It was proposed that the giant Faraday rotation originated from Fe-O6 molecular complexes of the octahedral sublattice. The strong transition observed at 3.15 eV may have a smaller accompanying peak near 5 eV. Transition bandwidths indicated that strong Bi-covalent interactions were present.
