201. $\textit{Who Speaks Matters}$: Analysing the Influence of the Speaker's Ethnicity on Hate Classification

Abstract: Large Language Models (LLMs) offer a lucrative promise for scalable content moderation, including hate speech detection. However, they are also known to be brittle and biased against marginalised communities and dialects. This requires their applications to high-stakes tasks like hate speech detection to be critically scrutinized. In this work, we investigate the robustness of hate speech classification using LLMs, particularly when explicit and implicit markers of the speaker's ethnicity are injected into the input. For the explicit markers, we inject a phrase that mentions the speaker's identity. For the implicit markers, we inject dialectal features. By analysing how frequently model outputs flip in the presence of these markers, we reveal varying degrees of brittleness across 4 popular LLMs and 5 ethnicities. We find that the presence of implicit dialect markers in inputs causes model outputs to flip more than the presence of explicit markers. Further, the percentage of flips varies across ethnicities. Finally, we find that larger models are more robust. 202. Strategic Control of Facial Expressions by the Fed Chair

Abstract: This article investigates whether the Federal Reserve Chair strategically controls facial expressions during FOMC press conferences and how these nonverbal cues affect financial markets. I use facial recognition technology on videos of press conferences from April 2011 to December 2020 to quantify changes in the Chair's nonverbal signals. Results show that facial expressions serve as a separate public signal, distinct from verbal content. Using deepfakes, I find that the same facial expressions expressed by different Fed Chairs are interpreted differentially. As their tenure increases, negative expressions become more frequent, eliciting adverse market reactions. Furthermore, the markets interpretation of these expressions evolves over time, suggesting that investors process facial cues with dual-processing finite-state Markov memory. Abstract: X-ray polarization is a unique new probe of the particle acceleration in astrophysical jets made possible through the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer. Here we report on the first dense X-ray polarization monitoring campaign on the blazar Mrk 421. Our observations were accompanied by an even denser radio and optical polarization campaign. We find significant short-timescale variability in both X-ray polarization degree and angle, including a $\sim90^\circ$ angle rotation about the jet axis. We attribute this to random variations of the magnetic field, consistent with the presence of turbulence but also unlikely to be explained by turbulence alone. At the same time, the degree of lower-energy polarization is significantly lower and shows no more than mild variability. Our campaign provides further evidence for a scenario in which energy-stratified shock-acceleration of relativistic electrons, combined with a turbulent magnetic field, is responsible for optical to X-ray synchrotron emission in blazar jets., Comment: 23 pages, including 8 pages of appendices. 12 figures, 3 tables. 204. MMDocBench: Benchmarking Large Vision-Language Models for Fine-Grained Visual Document Understanding

Abstract: Large Vision-Language Models (LVLMs) have achieved remarkable performance in many vision-language tasks, yet their capabilities in fine-grained visual understanding remain insufficiently evaluated. Existing benchmarks either contain limited fine-grained evaluation samples that are mixed with other data, or are confined to object-level assessments in natural images. To holistically assess LVLMs' fine-grained visual understanding capabilities, we propose using document images with multi-granularity and multi-modal information to supplement natural images. In this light, we construct MMDocBench, a benchmark with various OCR-free document understanding tasks for the evaluation of fine-grained visual perception and reasoning abilities. MMDocBench defines 15 main tasks with 4,338 QA pairs and 11,353 supporting regions, covering various document images such as research papers, receipts, financial reports, Wikipedia tables, charts, and infographics. Based on MMDocBench, we conduct extensive experiments using 13 open-source and 3 proprietary advanced LVLMs, assessing their strengths and weaknesses across different tasks and document image types. Abstract: Foundation models applied to bio-molecular space hold promise to accelerate drug discovery. Molecular representation is key to building such models. Previous works have typically focused on a single representation or view of the molecules. Here, we develop a multi-view foundation model approach, that integrates molecular views of graph, image and text. Single-view foundation models are each pre-trained on a dataset of up to 200M molecules and then aggregated into combined representations. Our multi-view model is validated on a diverse set of 18 tasks, encompassing ligand-protein binding, molecular solubility, metabolism and toxicity. We show that the multi-view models perform robustly and are able to balance the strengths and weaknesses of specific views. We then apply this model to screen compounds against a large (>100 targets) set of G Protein-Coupled receptors (GPCRs). From this library of targets, we identify 33 that are related to Alzheimer's disease. On this subset, we employ our model to identify strong binders, which are validated through structure-based modeling and identification of key binding motifs., Comment: 37 pages including supplement. 10 figures, 8 tables

206. Low-Rank Tensor Learning by Generalized Nonconvex Regularization

Abstract: In this paper, we study the problem of low-rank tensor learning, where only a few of training samples are observed and the underlying tensor has a low-rank structure. The existing methods are based on the sum of nuclear norms of unfolding matrices of a tensor, which may be suboptimal. In order to explore the low-rankness of the underlying tensor effectively, we propose a nonconvex model based on transformed tensor nuclear norm for low-rank tensor learning. Specifically, a family of nonconvex functions are employed onto the singular values of all frontal slices of a tensor in the transformed domain to characterize the low-rankness of the underlying tensor. An error bound between the stationary point of the nonconvex model and the underlying tensor is established under restricted strong convexity on the loss function (such as least squares loss and logistic regression) and suitable regularity conditions on the nonconvex penalty function. By reformulating the nonconvex function into the difference of two convex functions, a proximal majorization-minimization (PMM) algorithm is designed to solve the resulting model. Then the global convergence and convergence rate of PMM are established under very mild conditions. Numerical experiments are conducted on tensor completion and binary classification to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method over other state-of-the-art methods.

207. Revisiting Differentiable Structure Learning: Inconsistency of $\ell_1$ Penalty and Beyond

Abstract: Recent advances in differentiable structure learning have framed the combinatorial problem of learning directed acyclic graphs as a continuous optimization problem. Various aspects, including data standardization, have been studied to identify factors that influence the empirical performance of these methods. In this work, we investigate critical limitations in differentiable structure learning methods, focusing on settings where the true structure can be identified up to Markov equivalence classes, particularly in the linear Gaussian case. While Ng et al. (2024) highlighted potential non-convexity issues in this setting, we demonstrate and explain why the use of $\ell_1$-penalized likelihood in such cases is fundamentally inconsistent, even if the global optimum of the optimization problem can be found. To resolve this limitation, we develop a hybrid differentiable structure learning method based on $\ell_0$-penalized likelihood with hard acyclicity constraint, where the $\ell_0$ penalty can be approximated by different techniques including Gumbel-Softmax. Specifically, we first estimate the underlying moral graph, and use it to restrict the search space of the optimization problem, which helps alleviate the non-convexity issue. Experimental results show that the proposed method enhances empirical performance both before and after data standardization, providing a more reliable path for future advancements in differentiable structure learning, especially for learning Markov equivalence classes.

Abstract: We present a probabilistic ranking model to identify the optimal treatment in multiple-response experiments. In contemporary practice, treatments are applied over individuals with the goal of achieving multiple ideal properties on them simultaneously. However, often there are competing properties, and the optimality of one cannot be achieved without compromising the optimality of another. Typically, we still want to know which treatment is the overall best. In our framework, we first formulate overall optimality in terms of treatment ranks. Then we infer the latent ranking that allow us to report treatments from optimal to least optimal, provided ideal desirable properties. We demonstrate through simulations and real data analysis how we can achieve reliability of inferred ranks in practice. We adopt a Bayesian approach and derive an associated Markov Chain Monte Carlo algorithm to fit our model to data. Finally, we discuss the prospects of adoption of our method as a standard tool for experiment evaluation in trials-based research.

Abstract: In this paper, we present three-dimensional (3D) Particle-In-Cell (PIC) simulations to study the stability of 2D Bernstein-Greene-Kruskal (BGK) modes in a magnetized plasma with a finite background magnetic field. The simulations were performed using the Plasma Simulation Code (PSC) [Germaschewski et al., J. of Comp. Phys. 318, 305 (2016)], as in our recent study using 2D PIC simulations [McClung et al., Phys. Plasmas 31, 042302 (2024)], in order to see if and how the previous results would change with 3D effects. We found that solutions that are stable (unstable) in 2D simulations are still stable (unstable) in the new 3D simulations. However, the instability develops slower in 3D than in 2D and forms an unstable spiral wave structure that is in-phase along the axial direction. We have also simulated cases with an electron density bump (EDB) at the center, in addition to cases with an electron density hole (EDH) considered in our previous study, and found differences in the unstable spiral wave structures between the two cases. Additionally, we have generalized our simulations to have an increased electron thermal velocity, as well as using initial conditions solved from the complete Vlasov-Maxwell system of equations. Abstract: We present the results of a search for gravitational-wave transients associated with core-collapse supernova SN 2023ixf, which was observed in the galaxy Messier 101 via optical emission on 2023 May 19th, during the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA 15th Engineering Run. We define a five-day on-source window during which an accompanying gravitational-wave signal may have occurred. No gravitational waves have been identified in data when at least two gravitational-wave observatories were operating, which covered $\sim 14\%$ of this five-day window. We report the search detection efficiency for various possible gravitational-wave emission models. Considering the distance to M101 (6.7 Mpc), we derive constraints on the gravitational-wave emission mechanism of core-collapse supernovae across a broad frequency spectrum, ranging from 50 Hz to 2 kHz where we assume the GW emission occurred when coincident data are available in the on-source window. Considering an ellipsoid model for a rotating proto-neutron star, our search is sensitive to gravitational-wave energy $1 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2$ and luminosity $4 \times 10^{-5} M_{\odot} c^2/\text{s}$ for a source emitting at 50 Hz. These constraints are around an order of magnitude more stringent than those obtained so far with gravitational-wave data. However, many contemporary applications involve both classification and regression in an interdependent manner. In this work, we introduce a novel Two-Stage Learning-to-Defer framework for multi-task learning that jointly addresses these tasks. Our approach leverages a two-stage surrogate loss family, which we prove to be both ($\mathcal{G}, \mathcal{R}$)-consistent and Bayes-consistent, providing strong theoretical guarantees of convergence to the Bayes-optimal rejector. We establish consistency bounds explicitly linked to the cross-entropy surrogate family and the $L_1$-norm of the agents' costs, extending the theoretical minimizability gap analysis to the two-stage setting with multiple experts. 213. Low-Complexity Minimum BER Precoder Design for ISAC Systems: A Delay-Doppler Perspective

Abstract: Orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation is anticipated to be a promising candidate for supporting integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) systems, which is considered as a pivotal technique for realizing next generation wireless networks. In this paper, we develop a minimum bit error rate (BER) precoder design for an OTFS-based ISAC system. In particular, the BER minimization problem takes into account the maximum available transmission power budget and the required sensing performance. Different from prior studies that considered ISAC in the time-frequency (TF) domain, we devise the precoder from the perspective of the delay-Doppler (DD) domain by exploiting the equivalent DD domain channel due to the fact that the DD domain channel generally tends to be sparse and quasi-static, which can facilitate a low-overhead ISAC system design. To address the non-convex optimization design problem, we resort to optimizing the lower bound of the derived average BER by adopting Jensen's inequality. Subsequently, the formulated problem is decoupled into two independent sub-problems via singular value decomposition (SVD) methodology. We then theoretically analyze the feasibility conditions of the proposed problem and present a low-complexity iterative solution via leveraging the Lagrangian duality approach. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of our proposed precoder compared to the benchmark schemes and reveal the interplay between sensing and communication for dual-functional precoder design, indicating a trade-off where transmission efficiency is sacrificed for increasing transmission reliability and sensing accuracy.

214. Limpeh ga li gong: Challenges in Singlish Annotations

Abstract: Singlish, or Colloquial Singapore English, is a language formed from oral and social communication within multicultural Singapore. In this work, we work on a fundamental Natural Language Processing (NLP) task: Parts-Of-Speech (POS) tagging of Singlish sentences. For our analysis, we build a parallel Singlish dataset containing direct English translations and POS tags, with translation and POS annotation done by native Singlish speakers. Our experiments show that automatic transition- and transformer- based taggers perform with only $\sim 80\%$ accuracy when evaluated against human-annotated POS labels, suggesting that there is indeed room for improvement on computation analysis of the language. We provide an exposition of challenges in Singlish annotation: its inconsistencies in form and semantics, the highly context-dependent particles of the language, its structural unique expressions, and the variation of the language on different mediums. Our task definition, resultant labels and results reflects the challenges in analysing colloquial languages formulated from a variety of dialects, and paves the way for future studies beyond POS tagging.

215. Interaction of the Prominence Plasma within the Magnetic Cloud of an ICME with the Earth's Bow Shock

Abstract: The magnetic cloud within an interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) is characterized by high magnetic field intensities. In this study, we investigate the interaction of a magnetic cloud carrying a density structure with the Earth's bow shock during the ICME event on 24 April 2023. Elevated abundances of cold protons and heavier ions, namely alpha particles and singly charged helium ions, associated with the prominence plasma are observed within this structure. The plasma downstream of the bow shock exhibits an irregular compression pattern which could be due to the presence of heavy ions. Heavy ions carry a significant fraction of the upstream flow energy; however, due to their different charge per mass ratio and rigidity, they are less scattered by the electromagnetic and electrostatic waves at the shock. We find that downstream of the shock, while the thermal ion energy is only a small fraction of the background magnetic energy density, nevertheless increased ion fluxes reduce the characteristic wave speeds in the that region. As such, we observe a transition state of an unstable bow shock layer across which the plasma flow is super Alfv\'enic in both upstream and downstream regions. Our findings help with understanding the intense space weather impacts of such events.

Abstract: Diagnosing and treating skin diseases require advanced visual skills across multiple domains and the ability to synthesize information from various imaging modalities. Current deep learning models, while effective at specific tasks such as diagnosing skin cancer from dermoscopic images, fall short in addressing the complex, multimodal demands of clinical practice. Here, we introduce PanDerm, a multimodal dermatology foundation model pretrained through self-supervised learning on a dataset of over 2 million real-world images of skin diseases, sourced from 11 clinical institutions across 4 imaging modalities. We evaluated PanDerm on 28 diverse datasets covering a range of clinical tasks, including skin cancer screening, phenotype assessment and risk stratification, diagnosis of neoplastic and inflammatory skin diseases, skin lesion segmentation, change monitoring, and metastasis prediction and prognosis. PanDerm achieved state-of-the-art performance across all evaluated tasks, often outperforming existing models even when using only 5-10% of labeled data. PanDerm's clinical utility was demonstrated through reader studies in real-world clinical settings across multiple imaging modalities. It outperformed clinicians by 10.2% in early-stage melanoma detection accuracy and enhanced clinicians' multiclass skin cancer diagnostic accuracy by 11% in a collaborative human-AI setting. Additionally, PanDerm demonstrated robust performance across diverse demographic factors, including different body locations, age groups, genders, and skin tones. Abstract: The Workflows Community Summit gathered 111 participants from 18 countries to discuss emerging trends and challenges in scientific workflows, focusing on six key areas: time-sensitive workflows, AI-HPC convergence, multi-facility workflows, heterogeneous HPC environments, user experience, and FAIR computational workflows. The integration of AI and exascale computing has revolutionized scientific workflows, enabling higher-fidelity models and complex, time-sensitive processes, while introducing challenges in managing heterogeneous environments and multi-facility data dependencies. The rise of large language models is driving computational demands to zettaflop scales, necessitating modular, adaptable systems and cloud-service models to optimize resource utilization and ensure reproducibility. Multi-facility workflows present challenges in data movement, curation, and overcoming institutional silos, while diverse hardware architectures require integrating workflow considerations into early system design and developing standardized resource management tools. The summit emphasized improving user experience in workflow systems and ensuring FAIR workflows to enhance collaboration and accelerate scientific discovery. Key recommendations include developing standardized metrics for time-sensitive workflows, creating frameworks for cloud-HPC integration, implementing distributed-by-design workflow modeling, establishing multi-facility authentication protocols, and accelerating AI integration in HPC workflow management. The summit also called for comprehensive workflow benchmarks, workflow-specific UX principles, and a FAIR workflow maturity model, highlighting the need for continued collaboration in addressing the complex challenges posed by the convergence of AI, HPC, and multi-facility research environments.

Abstract: This paper presents Dual Action Policy (DAP), a novel approach to address the dynamics mismatch inherent in the sim-to-real gap of reinforcement learning. DAP uses a single policy to predict two sets of actions: one for maximizing task rewards in simulation and another specifically for domain adaptation via reward adjustments. This decoupling makes it easier to maximize the overall reward in the source domain during training. Additionally, DAP incorporates uncertainty-based exploration during training to enhance agent robustness. Experimental results demonstrate DAP's effectiveness in bridging the sim-to-real gap, outperforming baselines on challenging tasks in simulation, and further improvement is achieved by incorporating uncertainty estimation.

219. Off-dynamics Conditional Diffusion Planners

Abstract: Offline Reinforcement Learning (RL) offers an attractive alternative to interactive data acquisition by leveraging pre-existing datasets. However, its effectiveness hinges on the quantity and quality of the data samples. This work explores the use of more readily available, albeit off-dynamics datasets, to address the challenge of data scarcity in Offline RL. We propose a novel approach using conditional Diffusion Probabilistic Models (DPMs) to learn the joint distribution of the large-scale off-dynamics dataset and the limited target dataset. To enable the model to capture the underlying dynamics structure, we introduce two contexts for the conditional model: (1) a continuous dynamics score allows for partial overlap between trajectories from both datasets, providing the model with richer information; (2) an inverse-dynamics context guides the model to generate trajectories that adhere to the target environment's dynamic constraints. Empirical results demonstrate that our method significantly outperforms several strong baselines. Ablation studies further reveal the critical role of each dynamics context. Additionally, our model demonstrates that by modifying the context, we can interpolate between source and target dynamics, making it more robust to subtle shifts in the environment.

Abstract: Deploying a safe mobile robot policy in scenarios with human pedestrians is challenging due to their unpredictable movements. Current Reinforcement Learning-based motion planners rely on a single policy to simulate pedestrian movements and could suffer from the over-fitting issue. Alternatively, framing the collision avoidance problem as a multi-agent framework, where agents generate dynamic movements while learning to reach their goals, can lead to conflicts with human pedestrians due to their homogeneity. To tackle this problem, we introduce an efficient method that enhances agent diversity within a single policy by maximizing an information-theoretic objective. This diversity enriches each agent's experiences, improving its adaptability to unseen crowd behaviors. In assessing an agent's robustness against unseen crowds, we propose diverse scenarios inspired by pedestrian crowd behaviors. Our behavior-conditioned policies outperform existing works in these challenging scenes, reducing potential collisions without additional time or travel.

Abstract: Underwater vehicles have seen significant development over the past seventy years. However, bio-inspired propulsion robots are still in their early stages and require greater interdisciplinary collaboration between biologists and roboticists. The octopus, one of the most intelligent marine animals, exhibits remarkable abilities such as camouflaging, exploring, and hunting while swimming with its arms. Although bio-inspired robotics researchers have aimed to replicate these abilities, the complexity of designing an eight-arm bionic swimming platform has posed challenges from the beginning. In this work, we propose a novel bionic robot swimming platform that combines asymmetric passive morphing arms with an umbrella-like quick-return mechanism. Using only two simple constant-speed motors, this design achieves efficient swimming by replicating octopus-like arm movements and stroke time ratios. The robot reached a peak speed of 314 mm/s during its second power stroke. This design reduces the complexity of traditional octopus-like swimming robot actuation systems while maintaining good swimming performance. It offers a more achievable and efficient platform for biologists and roboticists conducting more profound octopus-inspired robotic and biological studies.

Abstract: Previous text-to-SQL datasets and systems have primarily focused on user questions with clear intentions that can be answered. However, real user questions can often be ambiguous with multiple interpretations or unanswerable due to a lack of relevant data. In this work, we construct a practical conversational text-to-SQL dataset called PRACTIQ, consisting of ambiguous and unanswerable questions inspired by real-world user questions. We first identified four categories of ambiguous questions and four categories of unanswerable questions by studying existing text-to-SQL datasets. Then, we generate conversations with four turns: the initial user question, an assistant response seeking clarification, the user's clarification, and the assistant's clarified SQL response with the natural language explanation of the execution results. For some ambiguous queries, we also directly generate helpful SQL responses, that consider multiple aspects of ambiguity, instead of requesting user clarification. To benchmark the performance on ambiguous, unanswerable, and answerable questions, we implemented large language model (LLM)-based baselines using various LLMs. Our approach involves two steps: question category classification and clarification SQL prediction. Our experiments reveal that state-of-the-art systems struggle to handle ambiguous and unanswerable questions effectively. We will release our code for data generation and experiments on GitHub.

Abstract: In the evolving landscape of quantum technology, the increasing prominence of quantum computing poses a significant threat to the security of conventional public key infrastructure. Quantum key distribution (QKD), an established quantum technology at a high readiness level, emerges as a viable solution with commercial adoption potential. QKD facilitates the establishment of secure symmetric random bit strings between two geographically separated, trustworthy entities, safeguarding communications from potential eavesdropping. In particular, data centre interconnects can leverage the potential of QKD devices to ensure the secure transmission of critical and sensitive information in preserving the confidentiality, security, and integrity of their stored data. In this article, we present the successful implementation of a QKD field trial within a commercial data centre environment that utilises the existing fibre network infrastructure. The achieved average secret key rate of 2.392 kbps and an average quantum bit error rate of less than 2% demonstrate the commercial feasibility of QKD in real-world scenarios. Abstract: The magnetar SGR 1935+2154 is the only known Galactic source of fast radio bursts (FRBs). FRBs from SGR 1935+2154 were first detected by CHIME/FRB and STARE2 in 2020 April, after the conclusion of the LIGO, Virgo, and KAGRA Collaborations' O3 observing run. Here we analyze four periods of gravitational wave (GW) data from the GEO600 detector coincident with four periods of FRB activity detected by CHIME/FRB, as well as X-ray glitches and X-ray bursts detected by NICER and NuSTAR close to the time of one of the FRBs. We do not detect any significant GW emission from any of the events. Instead, using a short-duration GW search (for bursts $\leq$ 1 s) we derive 50\% (90\%) upper limits of $10^{48}$ ($10^{49}$) erg for GWs at 300 Hz and $10^{49}$ ($10^{50}$) erg at 2 kHz, and constrain the GW-to-radio energy ratio to $\leq 10^{14} - 10^{16}$. We also derive upper limits from a long-duration search for bursts with durations between 1 and 10 s. Abstract: LLM agents have the potential to revolutionize defensive cyber operations, but their offensive capabilities are not yet fully understood. To prepare for emerging threats, model developers and governments are evaluating the cyber capabilities of foundation models. However, these assessments often lack transparency and a comprehensive focus on offensive capabilities. In response, we introduce the Catastrophic Cyber Capabilities Benchmark (3CB), a novel framework designed to rigorously assess the real-world offensive capabilities of LLM agents. Our evaluation of modern LLMs on 3CB reveals that frontier models, such as GPT-4o and Claude 3.5 Sonnet, can perform offensive tasks such as reconnaissance and exploitation across domains ranging from binary analysis to web technologies. Conversely, smaller open-source models exhibit limited offensive capabilities. 226. GLA-DA: Global-Local Alignment Domain Adaptation for Multivariate Time Series

Abstract: Unlike images and natural language tokens, time series data is highly semantically sparse, resulting in labor-intensive label annotations. Unsupervised and Semi-supervised Domain Adaptation (UDA and SSDA) have demonstrated efficiency in addressing this issue by utilizing pre-labeled source data to train on unlabeled or partially labeled target data. However, in domain adaptation methods designed for downstream classification tasks, directly adapting labeled source samples with unlabelled target samples often results in similar distributions across various classes, thereby compromising the performance of the target classification task. To tackle this challenge, we proposed a Global-Local Alignment Domain Adaptation (GLA-DA) method for multivariate time series data. Data from two domains were initially encoded to align in an intermediate feature space adversarially, achieving Global Feature Alignment (GFA). Subsequently, GLA-DA leveraged the consistency between similarity-based and deep learning-based models to assign pseudo labels to unlabeled target data. This process aims to preserve differences among data with distinct labels by aligning the samples with the same class labels together, achieving Local Class Alignment (LCA). We implemented GLA-DA in both UDA and SSDA scenarios, showcasing its superiority over state-of-the-art methods through extensive experiments on various public datasets. Ablation experiments underscored the significance of key components within GLA-DA.

227. Temperature Optimization for Bayesian Deep Learning

Abstract: The Cold Posterior Effect (CPE) is a phenomenon in Bayesian Deep Learning (BDL), where tempering the posterior to a cold temperature often improves the predictive performance of the posterior predictive distribution (PPD). Although the term `CPE' suggests colder temperatures are inherently better, the BDL community increasingly recognizes that this is not always the case. Despite this, there remains no systematic method for finding the optimal temperature beyond grid search. In this work, we propose a data-driven approach to select the temperature that maximizes test log-predictive density, treating the temperature as a model parameter and estimating it directly from the data. We empirically demonstrate that our method performs comparably to grid search, at a fraction of the cost, across both regression and classification tasks. Finally, we highlight the differing perspectives on CPE between the BDL and Generalized Bayes communities: while the former primarily focuses on predictive performance of the PPD, the latter emphasizes calibrated uncertainty and robustness to model misspecification; these distinct objectives lead to different temperature preferences., Comment: 11 pages (+5 reference, +16 appendix)

Abstract: Variational inference in Bayesian deep learning often involves computing the gradient of an expectation that lacks a closed-form solution. In these cases, pathwise and score-function gradient estimators are the most common approaches. The pathwise estimator is often favoured for its substantially lower variance compared to the score-function estimator, which typically requires variance reduction techniques. However, recent research suggests that even pathwise gradient estimators could benefit from variance reduction. In this work, we review existing control-variates-based variance reduction methods for pathwise gradient estimators to assess their effectiveness. Notably, these methods often rely on integrand approximations and are applicable only to simple variational families. To address this limitation, we propose applying zero-variance control variates to pathwise gradient estimators. Abstract: Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) is a promising technology to empower next-generation mobile communication networks. In this paper, to address the computational complexity associated with conventional fingerprint positioning, we consider a novel cooperative positioning architecture that involves certain relevant access points (APs) to establish positioning similarity coefficients. Then, we propose an innovative joint positioning and correction framework employing multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) to tackle the challenges of high-dimensional sophisticated signal processing, which mainly leverages on the received signal strength information for preliminary positioning, supplemented by the angle of arrival information to refine the initial position estimation. Moreover, to mitigate the bias effects originating from remote APs, we design a cooperative weighted K-nearest neighbor (Co-WKNN)-based estimation scheme to select APs with a high correlation to participate in user positioning. In the numerical results, we present comparisons of various user positioning schemes, which reveal that the proposed MARL-based positioning scheme with Co-WKNN can effectively improve positioning performance. It is important to note that the cooperative positioning architecture is a critical element in striking a balance between positioning performance and computational complexity.

Abstract: Real-world data often violates the equal-variance assumption (homoscedasticity), making it essential to account for heteroscedastic noise in causal discovery. In this work, we explore heteroscedastic symmetric noise models (HSNMs), where the effect $Y$ is modeled as $Y = f(X) + \sigma(X)N$, with $X$ as the cause and $N$ as independent noise following a symmetric distribution. We introduce a novel criterion for identifying HSNMs based on the skewness of the score (i.e., the gradient of the log density) of the data distribution. This criterion establishes a computationally tractable measurement that is zero in the causal direction but nonzero in the anticausal direction, enabling the causal direction discovery. We extend this skewness-based criterion to the multivariate setting and propose SkewScore, an algorithm that handles heteroscedastic noise without requiring the extraction of exogenous noise. We also conduct a case study on the robustness of SkewScore in a bivariate model with a latent confounder, providing theoretical insights into its performance. Empirical studies further validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract: Stock portfolios are often exposed to rare consequential events (e.g., 2007 global financial crisis, 2020 COVID-19 stock market crash), as they do not have enough historical information to learn from. Large Language Models (LLMs) now present a possible tool to tackle this problem, as they can generalize across their large corpus of training data and perform zero-shot reasoning on new events, allowing them to detect possible portfolio crash events without requiring specific training data. However, detecting portfolio crashes is a complex problem that requires more than basic reasoning abilities. Investors need to dynamically process the impact of each new information found in the news articles, analyze the the relational network of impacts across news events and portfolio stocks, as well as understand the temporal context between impacts across time-steps, in order to obtain the overall aggregated effect on the target portfolio. In this work, we propose an algorithmic framework named Temporal Relational Reasoning (TRR). It seeks to emulate the spectrum of human cognitive capabilities used for complex problem-solving, which include brainstorming, memory, attention and reasoning. Through extensive experiments, we show that TRR is able to outperform state-of-the-art solutions on detecting stock portfolio crashes, and demonstrate how each of the proposed components help to contribute to its performance through an ablation study. Additionally, we further explore the possible applications of TRR by extending it to other related complex problems, such as the detection of possible global crisis events in Macroeconomics.

232. DAPE V2: Process Attention Score as Feature Map for Length Extrapolation

Abstract: The attention mechanism is a fundamental component of the Transformer model, contributing to interactions among distinct tokens, in contrast to earlier feed-forward neural networks. In general, the attention scores are determined simply by the key-query products. However, this work's occasional trial (combining DAPE and NoPE) of including additional MLPs on attention scores without position encoding indicates that the classical key-query multiplication may limit the performance of Transformers. In this work, we conceptualize attention as a feature map and apply the convolution operator (for neighboring attention scores across different heads) to mimic the processing methods in computer vision. Specifically, the main contribution of this paper is identifying and interpreting the Transformer length extrapolation problem as a result of the limited expressiveness of the naive query and key dot product, and we successfully translate the length extrapolation issue into a well-understood feature map processing problem. The novel insight, which can be adapted to various attention-related models, reveals that the current Transformer architecture has the potential for further evolution. 233. Improving Image Clustering with Artifacts Attenuation via Inference-Time Attention Engineering

Abstract: The goal of this paper is to improve the performance of pretrained Vision Transformer (ViT) models, particularly DINOv2, in image clustering task without requiring re-training or fine-tuning. As model size increases, high-norm artifacts anomaly appears in the patches of multi-head attention. We observe that this anomaly leads to reduced accuracy in zero-shot image clustering. These artifacts are characterized by disproportionately large values in the attention map compared to other patch tokens. To address these artifacts, we propose an approach called Inference-Time Attention Engineering (ITAE), which manipulates attention function during inference. Specifically, we identify the artifacts by investigating one of the Query-Key-Value (QKV) patches in the multi-head attention and attenuate their corresponding attention values inside the pretrained models. ITAE shows improved clustering accuracy on multiple datasets by exhibiting more expressive features in latent space. 234. Efficient Inference for Large Language Model-based Generative Recommendation

Abstract: Large Language Model (LLM)-based generative recommendation has achieved notable success, yet its practical deployment is costly particularly due to excessive inference latency caused by autoregressive decoding. For lossless LLM decoding acceleration, Speculative Decoding (SD) has emerged as a promising solution. However, applying SD to generative recommendation presents unique challenges due to the requirement of generating top-K items (i.e., K distinct token sequences) as a recommendation list by beam search. This leads to more stringent verification in SD, where all the top-K sequences from the target LLM must be successfully drafted by the draft model at each decoding step. To alleviate this, we consider 1) boosting top-K sequence alignment between the draft model and the target LLM, and 2) relaxing the verification strategy to reduce trivial LLM calls. To this end, we propose an alignment framework named AtSpeed, which presents the AtSpeed-S optimization objective for top-K alignment under the strict top-K verification. Moreover, we introduce a relaxed sampling verification strategy that allows high-probability non-top-K drafted sequences to be accepted, significantly reducing LLM calls. Correspondingly, we propose AtSpeed-R for top-K alignment under this relaxed sampling verification. Abstract: In this paper, we investigate a cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output system, which exhibits great potential in enhancing the capabilities of next-generation mobile communication networks. We first study the distributed positioning problem to lay the groundwork for solving resource allocation and interference management issues. Instead of relying on computationally and spatially complex fingerprint positioning methods, we propose a novel two-stage distributed collaborative positioning architecture with multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) network, consisting of a received signal strength-based preliminary positioning network and an angle of arrival-based auxiliary correction network. Our experimental results demonstrate that the two-stage distributed collaborative user positioning architecture can outperform conventional fingerprint positioning methods in terms of positioning accuracy.

236. Universal parity and duality asymmetries-based optical force/torque framework

Abstract: Understanding how the structured incident light interacts with the inherent properties of the manipulated particle and governs the optical force/torque exerted is a cornerstone in the design of optical manipulation techniques, apart from its theoretical significance. Based on the Cartesian multipole expansion theory, we establish a framework for optical force/torque exerted on an arbitrary sized bi-isotropic (chiral) spherical particle immersed in generic monochromatic optical fields. Rigorous expressions are thus derived which explicitly bridges such mechanical effects of light with particle-property-dependent coefficients and "force/torque source" quantities that characterize the incident light structures. Such quantities, totalled only 12, are quadratic in terms of electric and magnetic field vectors, among which are linear and angular momenta, gradient of energy density, spin density, and helicity. They are further organized into four categories based on their parity (P) and duality (D) symmetries and shown to couple with a particle with different P and D symmetries to induce optical force/torque. This classification specifies the symmetry-breaking criteria required to induce optical force/torque, offering a promising roadmap for engineering the optical manipulation.

Abstract: XTE J1829-098 is a transient X-ray pulsar with a period of ~7.8 s. It is a candidate Be star system, although the evidence for this is not yet definitive. We investigated the twenty-year long X-ray light curve using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer Proportional Counter Array (PCA), Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory Burst Alert Telescope (BAT), and the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI). We find that all three light curves are clearly modulated on the ~244 day orbital period previously reported from PCA monitoring observations, with outbursts confined to a narrow phase range. The light curves also show that XTE J1829-098 was in an inactive state between approximately December 2008 and April 2018 and no strong outbursts occurred. Such behavior is typical of Be X-ray binary systems, with the absence of outbursts likely related to the dissipation of the Be star's decretion disk. The mean outburst shapes can be approximated with a triangular profile and, from a joint fit of this to all three light curves, we refine the orbital period to 243.95 +/- 0.04 days. The mean outburst profile does not show any asymmetry and has a total phase duration of 0.140 +/- 0.007. However, the PCA light curve shows that there is considerable cycle-to-cycle variability of the individual outbursts. We compare the properties of XTE J1829-098 with other sources that show short phase-duration outbursts, in particular GS 1843-02 (2S 1845-024) which has a very similar orbital period, but longer pulse period, and whose orbit is known to be highly eccentric., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. 21 pages

Abstract: In this paper, we investigate the performance of the cross-domain iterative detection (CDID) framework with orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation, where two distinct CDID algorithms are presented. The proposed schemes estimate/detect the information symbols iteratively across the frequency domain and the delay-Doppler (DD) domain via passing either the a posteriori or extrinsic information. Building upon this framework, we investigate the error performance by considering the bias evolution and state evolution. Furthermore, we discuss their error performance in convergence and the DD domain error state lower bounds in each iteration. Specifically, we demonstrate that in convergence, the ultimate error performance of the CDID passing the a posteriori information can be characterized by two potential convergence points. In contrast, the ultimate error performance of the CDID passing the extrinsic information has only one convergence point, which, interestingly, aligns with the matched filter bound. Our numerical results confirm our analytical findings and unveil the promising error performance achieved by the proposed designs.

239. Harnessing the Potential of Gen-AI Coding Assistants in Public Sector Software Development

Abstract: The study on GitHub Copilot by GovTech Singapore's Engineering Productivity Programme (EPP) reveals significant potential for AI Code Assistant tools to boost developer productivity and improve application quality in the public sector. Highlighting the substantial benefits for the public sector, the study observed an increased productivity (coding / tasks speed increased by 21-28%), which translates into accelerated development, and quicker go-to-market, with a notable consensus (95%) that the tool increases developer satisfaction. Particularly, junior developers experienced considerable efficiency gains and reduced coding times, illustrating Copilot's capability to enhance job satisfaction by easing routine tasks. This advancement allows for a sharper focus on complex projects, faster learning, and improved code quality. Recognising the strategic importance of these tools, the study recommends the development of an AI Framework to maximise such benefits while cautioning against potential over-reliance without solid foundational programming skills. It also advises public sector developers to classify their code as "Open" to use Gen-AI Coding Assistant tools on the Cloud like GitHub Copilot and to consider self-hosted tools like Codeium or Code Llama for confidential code to leverage technology efficiently within the public sector framework. With up to 8,000 developers, comprising both public officers and vendors developing applications for the public sector and its customers, there is significant potential to enhance productivity.

Abstract: Research in 3D mapping is crucial for smart city applications, yet the cost of acquiring 3D data often hinders progress. Visual localization, particularly monocular camera position estimation, offers a solution by determining the camera's pose solely through visual cues. However, this task is challenging due to limited data from a single camera. To tackle these challenges, we organized the AISG-SLA Visual Localization Challenge (VLC) at IJCAI 2023 to explore how AI can accurately extract camera pose data from 2D images in 3D space. The challenge attracted over 300 participants worldwide, forming 50+ teams. Winning teams achieved high accuracy in pose estimation using images from a car-mounted camera with low frame rates. The VLC dataset is available for research purposes upon request via vlc-dataset@aisingapore.org.

244. Case Report on Twice Exceptional Paradox: Unravelling the Potential and Challenges of Children with Neurodevelopmental Disorders and Cognitive Giftedness in Malaysia

Abstract: Twice-exceptional individuals experience learning and psychosocial challenges resulting from the discrepancies between their cognitive and social-emotional development. This case report illustrates the learning and psychosocial faced by a child and an adolescent who possess both neurodevelopmental disorders and intellectual giftedness, and the clinical difficulties encountered when assessing them. Psychological and cognitive assessments were instrumental in identifying the unique strengths and learning disabilities of these individuals. The parents received psychoeducation, and a strength-based approach involving them led to improved mood and functioning at home and school. By detailing the clinical challenges in assessment and the effectiveness of strength-based interventions, this study provides valuable insights into addressing the complex learning and educational needs of twice-exceptional children and adolescents in Malaysia. The findings emphasize the urgent need for comprehensive assessments and tailored interventions to support this population, whose potential is often hindered by unaddressed learning challenges. Additionally, the paper calls attention to gaps in current services and policies, advocating for improvements that can better support twice-exceptional learners in achieving their full potential.

245. A Bibliometric Analysis of STEM Education for Undergraduate Level Based on CiteSpace Software

Abstract: This study aims to review the STEM education intervention on the undergraduate level by applying CiteSpace software, an innovative tool for bibliometric analysis and visualization. The Web of Science (WOS) database was used and covers the period from January 2008 to August 2023. Based on keyword search, seven clusters with the largest research volume in the past 15 years were identified and analysed with relevant literature. The results revealed that the trending topics of STEM education research included racial and gender differences in STEM education, reform of STEM education assessment and motivation methods for undergraduates, strategies to improve STEM academic performance, and the impact of STEM education on undergraduate employment. Furthermore, a cluster analysis of keywords and references was conducted to explore the connections between the clustered themes and the core theme of STEM. The timeline visualization diagram was used to examine the duration and evolution of each research theme in STEM education, which provided useful information for identifying the direction of STEM research. Finally, through the citation burst analysis, the top 15 most cited references were determined, and the STEM research hotspots were discussed in relation to their literature, which were consistent with the STEM research hotspots derived from the high-frequency themes and node literature. The findings of this study offer important insights into the development trend of STEM education and provide an evidence base and reference for future research and development of STEM education particularly at the undergraduate level.

246. Enhancing Student Authorship and Broadening Personal Latitude in the Mathematics Classroom with Rich Dialogic Discourse

Abstract: Purpose: In this article, we explore how student authorship may be enhanced among learners in mathematics classrooms in a Hong Kong primary school through rich dialogue discourse. Design/Approach/Methods: Using qualitative methods, that is, coding and discourse analysis, we examine the relationship between student authorship and personal latitude through a case study of two Grade 4 mathematics lessons taught by two primary mathematics teachers, respectively. Findings: We discuss the study's findings in relation to how teachers can engage themselves and their students in dialogic discourse to offer student choices and opportunities and generate original voices. Originality/Value: Personal latitude was found when the students were given the choice to use their original voices. The learners assumed the role of author; consequently, authorship was enhanced in ensuing rich dialogic discourse.

247. Effects of MOOC and Video Conferencing Deliveries on Vocabulary Usage and Learning Strategies

Abstract: While vocabulary learning strategies (VLSs) have primarily been taught in physical classroom settings, the potential for applying strategy training in an online environment remains under-explored. With the rising acceptance of remote education, there is a need to investigate the impacts of applying strategy training in online contexts. Hence, this study explores the effects of online deliveries on VLSs and vocabulary usage in writing among adult English as second language (ESL) learners via massive open online course (MOOC) and video conferencing platforms. A total of 50 pre-intermediate ESL learners completed a 5-week VLSs course on a MOOC while 44 students learnt from the instructor synchronously using Microsoft Teams. The data comprised questionnaires and learners' compositions, which were collected before and after treatment. The data analysis procedures involved Lextutor's version of lexical frequency profiling (LFP), descriptive and inferential statistics. The results revealed that there was a significant increase of usage in all categories of the VLSs after the course for both groups. Additionally, the effects of VLSs instruction on vocabulary usage could be reflected in both groups' writing though the choice of words might have been task-influenced. The findings from this study could yield useful insights on online vocabulary learning for ESL instructors and learners.

248. The Nature of Students' Learning Outcomes during and Following Participation in a Simulation Remediation Program

Abstract: Simulation for success (SIM-S) was designed by work-integrated learning (WIL) academics and external clinical educators as an interprofessional, intensive remediation program for underperforming allied health students. Students engaged in authentic work-focused experiences in preparation for future clinical placements. A design-based research approach with mixed-methods was adopted to explore learning outcomes from perspectives of simulation facilitators and students. Learning outcomes were measured through descriptive analysis of students' goal attainment scaling, readiness for placement evaluation, and standardized national clinical assessment tools for subsequent placements. Framework Analysis was used to deductively code student learning goals. Students (n=23) built on their learner behavior, communication skills and information gathering skills. After participating in the SIM-S program, 19 students achieved a satisfactory outcome in their subsequent placement. Findings from this study may inform the design of future remediation programs that engage students in translating theory to practice, developing complex skills, and achieving professional competence.

249. Cross-Institutional Service-Learning in Orthopedics Curriculum in Traditional Chinese Medicine Education: APRS Service-Learning Model

Abstract: This article discusses how a new APRS service-learning model was implemented in a new service-learning project in the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) orthopedics curriculums at three Hong Kong institutions. The APRS model adopting flipped learning approach consists of four cyclic stages, including Application, Practice, Reflection and Self-regulated learning. Qualitative and quantitative findings in this study reveal that TCM students gained confidence in applying discipline knowledge/skills and improved in various areas, including cross-cultural competence, communication, problem-solving and collaboration. Drawing evidence from this study, possible factors contributing to positive impacts on student learning in the APRS model are the "strong connectivity" (including clear alignment with programme, profession, institutional missions and traditional Chinese philosophy "xiushen"), "reinforced motivation" (student autonomy and buy in) and "structured organisation" (strong network among participating parties and use of a centralised electronic platform). The APRS service-learning model is a culture-based approach helping students reconnect Confucian "xiushen" to the discipline knowledge and the real-life application in the Hong Kong context. This model may also be applicable to other Asian contexts where the Confucian culture prevails.

250. Exploring Students' Motivation in Mother Tongue Language through Experiential Learning: A Systematic Review

Abstract: There has been a decrease in the motivation levels of primary school students towards learning their native language. In Singapore, the native language is also known as the Mother Tongue Language (MTL). There is also a need for more research on Experiential Learning in primary schools worldwide and MTL classrooms in Singapore. Using the basic psychological needs of Self-Determination Theory (SDT), namely autonomy, competence, and relatedness, this research explores the potential of experiential learning as an effective pedagogical tool to foster motivation and learning. Using specific study selection and systematic review methods, 11 empirical papers were selected to study the potential of experiential learning strategies in fostering motivation and learning in primary and secondary school students, focusing mainly on primary school students. The experiential learning strategies in the research papers are categorized into game-based learning using ICT (Information and Communications Technology), imaginative activities, media, perspective-taking, and collaborative learning. While experiential learning strategies in schools fulfill lesser relatedness levels, the findings show that experiential learning can foster motivation in MTL classrooms, as experiential learning strategies could support autonomy and competence satisfaction in students.
