The glass transition is investigated in three dimensions for single and double Yukawa potentials for the full range of control parameters. For vanishing screening parameter, the limit of the one-component plasma is obtained; for large screening parameters and high coupling strengths, the glass-transition properties crossover to the hard-sphere system. Between the two limits, the entire transition diagram can be described by analytical functions. Different from other potentials, the glass-transition and melting lines for Yukawa potentials are found to follow shifted but otherwise identical curves in control-parameter space., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

When pulling a particle in a driven granular fluid with constant force $F_{ex}$, the probe particle approaches a steady-state average velocity $v$. This velocity and the corresponding friction coefficient of the probe $\zeta=F_{ex}/v$ are obtained within a schematic model of mode-coupling theory and compared to results from event-driven simulations. For small and moderate drag forces, the model describes the simulation results successfully for both the linear as well as the nonlinear region: The linear response regime (constant friction) for small drag forces is followed by shear thinning (decreasing friction) for moderate forces. For large forces, the model demonstrates a subsequent increasing friction in qualitative agreement with the data. Light-scattering in the terahertz region is demonstrated for granular matter. A quantum-cascade laser is used in a benchtop setup to determine the angle-dependent scattering of spherical grains as well as coffee powder and sugar grains. For the interpretation of the form factors for the scattering from single particles one has to go beyond the usual Rayleigh-Gans-Debye theory and apply calculations within Mie theory. We present results from experiments with granular packings in three dimensions in microgravity as realized on parabolic flights. Two different techniques are employed to monitor the inside of the packings during compaction: (1) X-ray radiography is used to measure in transmission the integrated fluctuations of particle positions. (2) Stress-birefringence in three dimensions is applied to visualize the stresses inside the packing. The particle motions below the transition into an arrested packing are found to produce a well agitated state. At the transition, the particles lose their energy quite rapidly and form a stress network. With both methods, non-arrested particles (rattlers) can be identified. In particular, it is found that rattlers inside the arrested packing can be excited to appreciable dynamics by the rest-accelerations (g-jitter) during a parabolic flight without destroying the packings. At low rates of compaction, a regime of slow granular cooling is identified. The slow cooling extends over several seconds, is described well by a linear law, and terminates in a rapid final collapse of dynamics before complete arrest of the packing., Comment: 8 pages, 8 figures

We report high-resolution hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy results on (Ga,Mn)As films as a function of Mn doping. Supported by theoretical calculations we identify, over the entire 1% to 13% Mn doping range, the electronic character of the states near the top of the valence band. Magnetization and temperature dependent core-level photoemission spectra reveal how the delocalized character of the Mn states enables the bulk ferromagnetic properties of (Ga,Mn)As., Comment: prl submitted

We consider the stationary state of a fluid comprised of inelastic hard spheres or disks under the influence of a random, momentum-conserving external force. Starting from the microscopic description of the dynamics, we derive a nonlinear equation of motion for the coherent scattering function in two and three space dimensions. A glass transition is observed for all coefficients of restitution, epsilon, at a critical packing fraction, phi_c(epsilon), below random close packing. The divergence of timescales at the glass-transition implies a dependence on compression rate upon further increase of the density - similar to the cooling rate dependence of a thermal glass. The critical dynamics for coherent motion as well as tagged particle dynamics is analyzed and shown to be non-universal with exponents depending on space dimension and degree of dissipation., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

We investigate submicron ferromagnetic PdNi thin-film strips intended as contact electrodes for carbon nanotube-based spintronic devices. The magnetic anisotropy and micromagnetic structure are measured as function of temperature and aspect ratio. Contrary to the expectation from shape anisotropy, magnetic hysteresis measurements of Pd0.3Ni0.7 on arrays containing strips of various width point towards a magnetically easy axis in the sample plane, but transversal to the strip direction. Anisotropic magnetoresistance measured on individual Pd0.3Ni0.7 contact strips and magnetic force microscopy images substantiate that conclusion., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We present a mode-coupling theory for the dynamics of a tagged particle in a driven granular fluid close to the glass transition. The mean-squared displacement is shown to exhibit a plateau indicating structural arrest. In contrast to elastic hard-sphere fluids, which are solely controlled by volume fraction, the localisation length as well as the critical dynamics depend on the degree of dissipation, parametrized by the coefficient of normal restitution epsilon. We investigate the dynamics of a driven system of dissipative hard spheres in the framework of mode-coupling theory. The dissipation is modeled by normal restitution, and driving is applied to individual particles in the bulk. In such a system, a glass transition is predicted for a finite transition density. For increasing inelasticity, the transition shifts to higher densities. Despite the strong driving at high dissipation, the transition persists up to the limit of totally inelastic normal restitution.

Within the framework of mode-coupling theory, the glass-transition scenario is investigated for a system of particles interacting with a hard-core repulsion and an additional square-shoulder soft core at larger distances. The static structure is calculated from the potential in Percus-Yevick approximation. For certain widths of the shoulder, the exponent parameter lambda along the glass-transition line shows a double peak. At both peaks, lambda can reach unity indicating the existence of higher-order glass-transition singularities. Building on mode-coupling-theory calculations, we report a novel scenario for multiple glass transitions in a purely repulsive spherical potential: the square-shoulder. The liquid-glass transition lines exhibit both melting by cooling and melting by compression as well as associated diffusion anomalies, similar to the ones observed in water. Differently from all previously investigated models, here for small shoulder widths a glass-glass line is found that is disconnected from the liquid phase. Upon increasing the shoulder width such a glass-glass line merges with the liquid-glass transition lines, featuring two distinct endpoint singularities that give rise to logarithmic decays in the dynamics. Silver dimers were fabricated on Ag(111) by single-atom manipulation using the tip of a cryogenic scanning tunnelling microscope. An unoccupied electronic resonance was observed to shift toward the Fermi level with decreasing atom-atom distance as monitored by spatially resolved scanning tunnelling spectroscopy. Density functional calculations were used to analyse the experimental observations and revealed that the coupling between the adsorbed atoms is predominantly direct rather than indirect via the Ag(111) substrate., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

MBE-grown, 5 nm-thick annealed Ga0.95Mn0.05As films with Tc~90K demonstrate transition from metallic to insulating state below To~10K, where sheet resistances Rsh~h/e2 and both longitudinal Rxx and transverse Rxy components become comparable. Below metal-insulator transition we found giant anisotropic magnetoresistance (GAMR), which depends on orientation of magnetization to crystallographic axes and manifests itself in positive magnetoresistance near 50% for Rxx at T=1.7K, H//[110] crystallographic direction and parallel to current in contrast to smaller and negative magnetoresistance for H// direction. Magnetic Circular Dichroism (MCD) is a standard technique for the study of magnetic properties of materials in synchrotron beamlines. We present here a new scattering geometry in the Transmission Electron Microscope through which MCD can be observed with unprecedented spatial resolution. A convergent electron beam is used to scan a multilayer Fe/Au sample and record energy loss spectra. Differences in the spectra induced by the magnetic moments of the Fe atoms can be resolved with a resolution of 2 nm. This is a breakthrough achievement when compared both to the previous EMCD resolution (200 nm) or the best XMCD experiments (approx. 20 nm), with an improvement of two and one order of magnitude, respectively., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Ultramicroscopy

Size-selected silver clusters on Ag(111) were fabricated with the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope. Unoccupied electron resonances give rise to image contrast and spectral features which shift toward the Fermi level with increasing cluster size. Linear assemblies exhibit higher resonance energies than equally sized compact assemblies. Density functional theory calculations reproduce the observed energies and enable an assignment of the resonances to hybridized atomic 5s and 5p orbitals with silver substrate states., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

A colloidal system of spheres interacting with both a deep and narrow attractive potential and a shallow long-ranged barrier exhibits a prepeak in the static structure factor. This peak can be related to an additional mesoscopic length scale of clusters and/or voids in the system. Simulation studies of this system have revealed that it vitrifies upon increasing the attraction into a gel-like solid at intermediate densities. The dynamics at the mesoscopic length scale corresponding to the prepeak represents the slowest mode in the system. Using mode coupling theory with all input directly taken from simulations, we reveal the mechanism for glassy arrest in the system at 40% packing fraction. The effects of the low-q peak and of polydispersity are considered in detail. We demonstrate that the local formation of physical bonds is the process whose slowing down causes arrest. It remains largely unaffected by the large-scale heterogeneities, and sets the clock for the slow cluster mode. Results from mode-coupling theory without adjustable parameters agree semi-quantitatively with the local density correlators but overestimate the lifetime of the mesoscopic structure (voids)., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures
