Search

One of the most energetic events in the Universe are core-collapse Supernovae (SNe), where almost all the star's binding energy is released as neutrinos. These particles are direct probes of the processes occurring in the stellar core and provide unique insights into the gravitational collapse. RES-NOVA will revolutionize how we detect neutrinos from astrophysical sources, by deploying the first ton-scale array of cryogenic detectors made from archaeological lead. Pb offers the highest neutrino interaction cross-section via coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$\nu$NS). Such process will enable RES-NOVA to be equally sensitive to all neutrino flavors. For the first time, we propose to use archaeological Pb as sensitive target material in order to achieve an ultra-low background level in the region of interest (\textit{O}(1keV)). All these features make possible the deployment of the first cm-scale neutrino telescope for the investigation of astrophysical sources. In this contribution, we will characterize the radiopurity level and the performance of a small-scale proof-of-principle detector of RES-NOVA, consisting in a PbWO$_4$ crystal made from archaeological-Pb operated as cryogenic detector.

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the most sensitive experiment searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) in $^{130}\text{Te}$. CUORE uses a cryogenic array of 988 TeO$_2$ calorimeters operated at $\sim$10 mK with a total mass of 741 kg. To further increase the sensitivity, the detector response must be well understood. Here, we present a non-linear thermal model for the CUORE experiment on a detector-by-detector basis. We have examined both equilibrium and dynamic electro-thermal models of detectors by numerically fitting non-linear differential equations to the detector data of a subset of CUORE channels which are well characterized and representative of all channels. We demonstrate that the hot-electron effect and electric-field dependence of resistance in NTD-Ge thermistors alone are inadequate to describe our detectors' energy dependent pulse shapes. We introduce an empirical second-order correction factor in the exponential temperature dependence of the thermistor, which produces excellent agreement with energy-dependent pulse shape data up to 6 MeV. We also present a noise analysis using the fitted thermal parameters and show that the intrinsic thermal noise is negligible compared to the observed noise for our detectors., Comment: 34 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of INFN in Italy is an experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta (0$\nu\beta\beta$) decay. Its main goal is to investigate this decay in $^{130}$Te, but its ton-scale mass and low background make CUORE sensitive to other rare processes as well. In this work, we present our first results on the search for \nbb decay of $^{128}$Te, the Te isotope with the second highest natural isotopic abundance. We find no evidence for this decay, and using a Bayesian analysis we set a lower limit on the $^{128}$Te \nbb decay half-life of T$_{1/2} > 3.6 \times 10^{24}$ yr (90\% CI). This represents the most stringent limit on the half-life of this isotope, improving by over a factor 30 the previous direct search results, and exceeding those from geochemical experiments for the first time.

Elastic flow for closed curves can involve significant deformations. Mesh-based approximation schemes require tangentially redistributing vertices for long-time computations. We present and analyze a method that uses the Dirichlet energy for this purpose. The approach effectively also penalizes the length of the curve, and equilibrium shapes are equivalent to stationary points of the elastic energy augmented with the length functional. Our numerical method is based on linear parametric finite elements. Following the lines of K Deckelnick, and G Dziuk (Math Comp 78, 266 (2009), 645-671) we prove convergence and establish error estimates, noting that the addition of the Dirichlet energy simplifies the analysis in comparison with the length functional. We also present a simple semi-implicit time discretization and discuss some numerical result that support the theory.

Initially stressed plates are widely used in modern fabrication techniques, such as additive manufacturing and UV lithography, for their tunable morphology by application of external stimuli. In this work, we propose a formal asymptotic derivation of the F\"{o}ppl-von K\'{a}rm\'{a}n equations for an elastic plate with initial stresses, using the constitutive theory of nonlinear elastic solids with initial stresses under the assumptions of incompressibility and material isotropy. Compared to existing works, our approach allows to determine the morphological transitions of the elastic plate without prescribing the underlying target metric of the unstressed state of the elastic body. We explicitly solve the derived FvK equations in some physical problems of engineering interest, discussing how the initial stress distribution drives the emergence of spontaneous curvatures within the deformed plate. The proposed mathematical framework can be used to tailor shape on demand, with applications in several engineering fields ranging from soft robotics to 4D printing.

We present a multi-wavelength study of the molecular gas properties of a sample of local Seyfert 2 galaxies to assess if, and to what extent, the presence of an active galactic nucleus (AGN) can affect the Interstellar Medium (ISM) properties in a sample of 33 local Seyfert 2 galaxies. We compare the molecular gas content (MH2), derived from new and archival low-J CO line measurements of a sample of AGN and a control sample of star-forming galaxies (SFGs). Both the AGN and the control sample are characterised in terms of host-galaxy properties (e.g., stellar and dust masses, Mstar and Mdust, respectively; and star formation rate, SFR). We also investigate the effect of AGN activity onto the emission of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules in the mid-infrared (MIR), a waveband where the dust-reprocessed emission from the obscured AGN contributes the most. The AGN hosted in less massive galaxies (i.e., log(Mstar/Msun)<10.5; log(Mdust/Msun)<7.5) show larger molecular gas content with respect to SFGs matched in stellar and dust mass. When comparing their depletion time(tdep~MH2/SFR), AGN show tdep~0.3-1.0 Gyr, similar to those observed in the control sample of SFGs. Seyfert 2 galaxies show fainter PAH luminosity at increasingly larger dominance of the nuclear activity in the MIR. We find no clear evidence for a systematic reduction of the molecular gas reservoir at galactic scale in Seyfert galaxies with respect to SFGs. This is in agreement with recent studies showing that molecular gas content only is reduced in regions of sub-kpc size, where the emission from the accreting supermassive black hole dominates. CUORE is a large scale cryogenic experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) in $^{130}$Te. The CUORE detector is made of natural tellurium, providing the possibility of rare event searches on isotopes other than $^{130}$Te. In this work we describe a search for neutrinoless positron emitting electron capture ($0\nu\beta^+EC$) decay in $^{120}$Te with a total TeO$_2$ exposure of 355.7 kg $\cdot$ yr, corresponding to 0.2405 kg $\cdot$ yr of $^{120}$Te. Albeit $0 \nu \beta\beta$ with two final state electrons represents the most promising channel, the emission of a positron and two 511-keV $\gamma$s make $0\nu\beta^+EC$ decay signature extremely clear. To fully exploit the potential offered by the detector modularity we include events with different topology and perform a simultaneous fit of five selected signal signatures. Using blinded data we extract a median exclusion sensitivity of $3.4 \cdot 10^{22}$ yr at 90% Credibility Interval (C.I.). After unblinding we find no evidence of $0\nu\beta^+EC$ signal and set a 90% C.I. Bayesian lower limit of $2.9 \cdot 10^{22}$ yr on $^{120}$Te half-life. This result improves by an order of magnitude the existing limit from the combined analysis of CUORE-0 and Cuoricino.

Current experiments to search for broken lepton-number symmetry through the observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\mathrm{\nu\beta\beta}$) provide the most stringent limits on the Majorana nature of neutrinos and the effective Majorana neutrino mass ($m_{\beta\beta}$). The next-generation experiments will focus on the sensitivity to the $0\mathrm{\nu\beta\beta}$ half-life of $\mathcal{O}(10^{27}$--$10^{28}$~years$)$ and $m_{\beta\beta}\lesssim15$~meV, which would provide complete coverage of the so-called Inverted Ordering region of the neutrino mass parameter space. By taking advantage of recent technological breakthroughs, new, future calorimetric experiments at the 1-ton scale can increase the sensitivity by at least another order of magnitude, exploring the large fraction of the parameter space that corresponds to the Normal neutrino mass ordering. In case of a discovery, such experiments could provide important insights toward a new understanding of the mechanism of $0\mathrm{\nu\beta\beta}$. We present here a series of projects underway that will provide advancements in background reduction, cryogenic readout, and physics searches beyond $0\mathrm{\nu\beta\beta}$, all moving toward the next-to-next generation CUPID-1T detector., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

The Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment is designed to measure a high-precision integral spectrum of the endpoint region of T2 beta decay, with the primary goal of probing the absolute mass scale of the neutrino. After a first tritium commissioning campaign in 2018, the experiment has been regularly running since 2019, and in its first two measurement campaigns has already achieved a sub-eV sensitivity. After 1000 days of data-taking, KATRIN's design sensitivity is 0.2 eV at the 90% confidence level. In this white paper we describe the current status of KATRIN; explore prospects for measuring the neutrino mass and other physics observables, including sterile neutrinos and other beyond-Standard-Model hypotheses; and discuss research-and-development projects that may further improve the KATRIN sensitivity., Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021. 70 pages excluding references; 35 figures. RES-NOVA is a newly proposed experiment for the detection of neutrinos from astrophysical sources, mainly Supernovae, using an array of cryogenic detectors made of PbWO$_4$ crystals produced from archaeological Pb. This unconventional material, characterized by intrinsic high radiopurity, enables to achieve low-background levels in the region of interest for the neutrino detection via Coherent Elastic neutrino-Nucleus Scattering (CE$\nu$NS). This signal lies at the detector energy threshold, O(1 keV), and it is expected to be hidden by naturally occurring radioactive contaminants of the crystal absorber. Here, we present the results of a radiopurity assay on a 0.84 kg PbWO$_4$ crystal produced from archaeological Pb operated as a cryogenic detector. The crystal internal radioactive contaminations are: $^{232}$Th $<$40 $\mu$Bq/kg, $^{238}$U $<$30 $\mu$Bq/kg, $^{226}$Ra 1.3 mBq/kg and $^{210}$Pb 22.5 mBq/kg. We present also a background projection for the final experiment and possible mitigation strategies for further background suppression. The luminosity functions at z < 4 - 5 suggest that most galaxies have a relatively low stellar mass (logM_star = 10) and a low dust attenuation (A_FUV = 1.0). The physical properties of these objects are quite homogeneous. We used an approach where we combined their rest-frame far-infrared and submillimeter emissions and utilized the universe and the redshift as a spectrograph to increase the amount of information in a collective way. From a subsample of 27 ALMA-detected galaxies at z > 4.5, we built an infrared spectral energy distribution composite template. It was used to fit, with CIGALE, the 105 galaxies (detections and upper limits) in the sample from the FUV to the FIR. The derived physical parameters provide information to decipher the nature of the dust cycle and of the stellar populations in these galaxies. The derived IR composite template is consistent with the galaxies in the studied sample. A delayed star formation history with tau_main = 500 Myrs is slightly favored by the statistical analysis as compared to a delayed with a final burst or a continuous star formation history. The position of the sample in the star formation rate (SFR)- M_star diagram is consistent with previous papers. The redshift evolution of the log M_star versus A_FUV relation is in agreement with evolution in the redshift of this relation. This evolution is necessary to explain the cosmic evolution of the average dust attenuation of galaxies. Evolution is also observed in the L_dust/ L_FUV (IRX) versus UV slope beta_FUV diagram: younger galaxies have bluer beta_FUV. We modeled the shift of galaxies in the IRX versus the beta_FUV diagram with the mass-weighted age as a free parameter, and we provide an equation to make predictions., Comment: 40 pages, 13 figures

We report the use of an electrostatic MEMS-based device to produce high quality electron vortex beams with more than 1000 quanta of orbital angular momentum (OAM). Diffraction and off-axis electron holography experiments are used to show that the diameter of the vortex in the diffraction plane increases linearly with OAM, thereby allowing the angular momentum content of the vortex to be calibrated. The realization of electron vortex beams with even larger values of OAM is currently limited by the breakdown voltage of the device. A new parasitic, mixed-field, neutron-dominated irradiation station has been recently commissioned at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN). The station is installed in the Neutron Time-Of-Flight (n\_TOF) facility, taking advantage of the secondary radiation produced by the neutron spallation target. The new station allows radiation damage studies to be performed in irradiation conditions that are closer to the ones encountered during the operation of particle accelerators; the irradiation tests carried out in the station will be complementary to the standard tests on materials, usually performed with gamma sources. Samples will be exposed to neutron doses in the MGy range per year, with minimal impact on the n TOF facility operation. The station has twenty-four irradiation positions, each hosting up to 100 cm3 of sample material. In view of its proximity to the n\_TOF target, inside protective shielding, the irradiation station and its operating procedures have been carefully developed taking into account the safety of personnel and to avoid any unwanted impact on the operation of the n\_TOF facility and experiments. Due to the residual radioactivity of the whole area around the n\_TOF target and of the irradiated samples, access to the irradiation station is forbidden to human operators even when the n\_TOF facility is not in operation. Robots are used for the remote installation and retrieval of the samples, and other optimizations of the handling procedures were developed in compliance with radiation protection regulations and the aim of minimizing doses to personnel.

The CUPID-Mo experiment to search for 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay in $^{100}$Mo has been recently completed after about 1.5 years of operation at Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France). It served as a demonstrator for CUPID, a next generation 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay experiment. CUPID-Mo was comprised of 20 enriched Li$_2$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ scintillating calorimeters, each with a mass of $\sim$ 0.2 kg, operated at $\sim$20 mK. We present here the final analysis with the full exposure of CUPID-Mo ($^{100}$Mo exposure of 1.47 kg$\times$yr) used to search for lepton number violation via 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay. We report on various analysis improvements since the previous result on a subset of data, reprocessing all data with these new techniques. We observe zero events in the region of interest and set a new limit on the $^{100}$Mo 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life of $T^{0\nu}_{1/2} > 1.8 \times 10^{24}$ year (stat.+syst.) at 90% CI. Under the light Majorana neutrino exchange mechanism this corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass of $\left < (0.28$--$0.49)$ eV, dependent upon the nuclear matrix element utilized.

CUPID will be a next generation experiment searching for the neutrinoless double $\beta$ decay, whose discovery would establish the Majorana nature of the neutrino. Based on the experience achieved with the CUORE experiment, presently taking data at LNGS, CUPID aims to reach a background free environment by means of scintillating Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystals coupled to light detectors. Indeed, the simultaneous heat and light detection allows us to reject the dominant background of $\alpha$ particles, as proven by the CUPID-0 and CUPID-Mo demonstrators. In this work we present the results of the first test of the CUPID baseline module. In particular, we propose a new optimized detector structure and light sensors design to enhance the engineering and the light collection, respectively. We characterized the heat detectors, achieving an energy resolution of (5.9 $\pm$ 0.2) keV FWHM at the $Q$-value of $^{100}$Mo (about 3034 keV). We studied the light collection of the baseline CUPID design with respect to an alternative configuration which features gravity-assisted light detectors' mounting. In both cases we obtained an improvement in the light collection with respect to past measures and we validated the particle identification capability of the detector, which ensures an $\alpha$ particle rejection higher than 99.9%, fully satisfying the requirements for CUPID., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

We differentiate the event-by-event n-$\gamma$ multiplicity data from \ce{^{252}Cf}(sf) with respect to the energies of the emitted particles as well as their relative angles of emission. We determine that neutron emission enhances $\gamma$-ray emission around $0.7$ and $1.2$ MeV, but the only directional alignment was observed for $E_\gamma \leq 0.7$ MeV and tended to be parallel and antiparallel to neutrons emitted in the same event. The emission of $\gamma$ rays at other energies was determined to be nearly isotropic. The presence of the emission and alignment enhancements is explained by positive correlations between neutron emission and quadrupole $\gamma$-ray emission along rotational bands in the de-exciting fragments. This observation corroborates the hypothesis of positive correlations between the angular momentum of a fragment and its intrinsic excitation energy. The results of this work are especially relevant in view of the recent theoretical and experimental interest in the generation of angular momentum in fission. Specifically, we have determined an alignment of the fragments angular momenta in a direction perpendicular to the direction of motion. We interpret the lack of $n$-$\gamma$ angular correlations for fission fragments near closed shells as a weakening of the alignment process for spherical nuclei. Lastly, we have observed that statistical $\gamma$ rays are emitted isotropically, indicating that the average angular momentum removed by this radiation is small. These results, and the analysis tools presented in this work, represent a stepping stone for future analysis of $n$-$\gamma$ emission correlations and their connection to angular momentum properties., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, no table

We present a detailed analysis of the X-ray, infrared, and carbon monoxide (CO) emission for a sample of 35 local ($z \leq 0.15$), active ($L_X \geq 10^{42}$ erg s$^{-1}$) galaxies. Our goal is to infer the contribution of far-ultraviolet (FUV) radiation from star formation (SF), and X-ray radiation from the active galactic nuclei (AGN), respectively producing photodissociation regions (PDRs) and X-ray dominated regions (XDRs), to the molecular gas heating. To this aim, we exploit the CO spectral line energy distribution (CO SLED) as traced by Herschel, complemented with data from single-dish telescopes for the low-J lines, and high-resolution ALMA images of the mid-J CO emitting region. By comparing our results to the Schmidt-Kennicutt relation, we find no evidence for AGN influence on the cold and low-density gas on kpc-scales. On nuclear (r = 250 pc) scales, we find weak correlations between the CO line ratios and either the FUV or X-ray fluxes: this may indicate that neither SF nor AGN radiation dominates the gas excitation, at least at r = 250 pc. From a comparison of the CO line ratios with PDR and XDR models, we find that PDRs can reproduce observations only in presence of extremely high gas densities ($n > 10^5$ cm$^{-3}$). In the XDR case, instead, the models suggest moderate densities ($n \approx 10^{2-4}$ cm$^{-3}$). We conclude that a mix of the two mechanisms (PDR for the mid-J, XDR or possibly shocks for the high-J) is necessary to explain the observed CO excitation in active galaxies., Comment: 25 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Star Formation Rate Density (SFRD) history of the Universe is well constrained up to redshift $z \sim 2$. At earlier cosmic epochs, the picture has been largely inferred from UV-selected galaxies (e.g. Lyman-break galaxies, LBGs). However, LBGs' inferred SFRs strongly depend on the assumed dust extinction correction, which is not well-constrained at high-$z$, while observations in the radio domain are not affected by this issue. In this work we measure the SFRD from a 1.4 GHz-selected sample of $\sim$600 galaxies in the GOODS-N field up to redshift $\sim 3.5$. We take into account the contribution of Active Galactic Nuclei from the Infrared-Radio correlation. We measure the radio luminosity function, fitted with a modified Schechter function, and derive the SFRD. The cosmic SFRD shows a rise up to $z \sim 2$ and then an almost flat plateau up to $z \sim 3.5$. Our SFRD is in agreement with the ones from other FIR/radio surveys and a factor 2 higher than those from LBG samples. We also estimate that galaxies lacking a counterpart in the HST/WFC3 H-band ($H$-dark) make up $\sim 25\%$ of the $\phi$-integrated SFRD relative to the full sample at z $\sim 3.2$, and up to $58\%$ relative to LBG samples., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures. The modeling of coupled fluid transport and deformation in a porous medium is essential to predict the various geomechanical process such as CO2 sequestration, hydraulic fracturing, and so on. Current applications of interest, for instance, that include fracturing or damage of the solid phase, require a nonlinear description of the large deformations that can occur. This paper presents a variational energy-based continuum mechanics framework to model large-deformation poroelasticity. The approach begins from the total free energy density that is additively composed of the free energy of the components. A variational procedure then provides the balance of momentum, fluid transport balance, and pressure relations. A numerical approach based on finite elements is applied to analyze the behavior of saturated and unsaturated porous media using a nonlinear constitutive model for the solid skeleton. Examples studied include the Terzaghi and Mandel problems; a gas-liquid phase-changing fluid; multiple immiscible gases; and unsaturated systems where we model injection of fluid into soil. The proposed variational approach can potentially have advantages for numerical methods as well as for combining with data-driven models in a Bayesian framework., Comment: To appear in International Journal for Numerical and Analytical Methods in Geomechanics
