The objective of this study was to reconstruct the last century’s climatic oscillations in the Arctic region around the Fram Strait using high-resolution analysis of foraminiferal assemblages as proxies for surface and deep-water mass properties. In this area, warm Atlantic water masses are advected to the Arctic Ocean through the West Spitsbergen Current, representing the northernmost tip of the Global Thermohaline Circulation. The interaction between the cold Arctic and the warm Atlantic water masses significantly influences the entire foraminiferal community. Planktic species such as Neogloboquadrina pachyderma and Turborotalita quinqueloba are respectively used as indicators of cold Arctic water and warm Atlantic water masses. Among the main benthic species, Cibicidoides wuellerstorfi, Epistominella exigua, and Oridorsalis tener stand out, serving as proxies for the bottom water mass current velocity and paleoproductivity. The paleoenvironmental reconstruction obtained with the foraminiferal assemblages, together with data from satellite monitoring of the sea ice extent and the long-term record of the annual temperature of the West Spitsbergen Current measured over the last 50 years, support the evidence of a progressively rising heat influx into the Arctic Ocean due to an increasing Atlantic water inflow, forcing the consequent decay of the sea ice extent.

During explosive eruptions, tephra fallout represents one of the main volcanic hazards and can be extremely dangerous for air traffic, infrastructures, and human health. Here, we present a new technique aimed at identifying the area covered by tephra after an explosive event, based on processing PlanetScope imagery. We estimate the mean reflectance values of the visible (RGB) and near infrared (NIR) bands, analyzing pre- and post-eruptive data in specific areas and introducing a new index, which we call the ‘Tephra Fallout Index (TFI)’. We use the Google Earth Engine computing platform and define a threshold for the TFI of different eruptive events to distinguish the areas affected by the tephra fallout and quantify the surface coverage density. We apply our technique to the eruptive events occurring in 2021 at Mt. Etna (Italy), which mainly involved the eastern flank of the volcano, sometimes two or three times within a day, making field surveys difficult. Whenever possible, we compare our results with field data and find an optimal match. This work could have important implications for the identification and quantification of short-term volcanic hazard assessments in near real-time during a volcanic eruption, but also for the mapping of other hazardous events worldwide.

Abstract The European Commission requested the EFSA Panel on Plant Health to prepare and deliver risk assessments for commodities listed in Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2018/2019 as ‘High risk plants, plant products and other objects’. This Scientific Opinion covers plant health risks posed by rooted plants and bundles of bare root plants or rooted cell grown young plants of Malus sylvestris imported from the UK, taking into account the available scientific information, including the technical information provided by the UK. All pests associated with the commodities were evaluated against specific criteria for their relevance for this opinion. Two quarantine pests (tobacco ringspot virus and tomato ringspot virus), one protected zone quarantine pest (Erwinia amylovora) and four non‐regulated pests (Colletotrichum aenigma, Meloidogyne mali, Eulecanium excrescens and Takahashia japonica) that fulfilled all relevant criteria were selected for further evaluation. For Erwinia amylovora, special requirements are specified in Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2019/2072. Based on the information provided in the dossier, these specific requirements for E. amylovora are met. For the remaining six pests, the risk mitigation measures proposed in the technical Dossier from the UK were evaluated, taking into account the possible limiting factors. For these pests, expert judgement is given on the likelihood of pest freedom, taking into consideration the risk mitigation measures acting on the pest, including uncertainties associated with the assessment. The degree of pest freedom varies among the pests evaluated, with scales (Eulecanium excrescens and Takahashia japonica) being the pests most frequently expected on the imported bundles of bare root plants or rooted cell grown young plants. The expert knowledge elicitation indicated with 95% certainty that between 9,976 and 10,000 bundles (one bundle consisting of 5–15 plants for bare root plants or 25–50 plants for cell grown young plants) per 10,000 would be free from the above‐mentioned scales.

Concern about atmospheric microplastic (MP) contamination has increased in recent years. This study assessed the abundance of airborne anthropogenic particles, including MPs, deposited in rainfall in Bahia Blanca, southwest Buenos Aires, Argentina. Rainwater samples were collected monthly from March to December 2021 using an active wet-only collector consisting of a glass funnel and a PVC pipe that is only open during rain events. Results obtained show that all rain samples contained anthropogenic debris. The term “anthropogenic debris” is used to refer to the total number of particles as not all the particles found could be determined as plastic. Among all the samples, an average deposition of 77 ± 29 items (anthropogenic debris) m−2d−1 was found. The highest deposition was observed in November (148 items m−2d−1) while the lowest was found in March (46 items m−2d−1). Anthropogenic debris ranged in size from 0.1 mm to 3.87 mm with the most abundant particles being smaller than 1 mm (77.8%). The dominant form of particles found were fibers (95%), followed by fragments (3.1%). Blue color predominated (37.2%) in the total number of samples, followed by light blue (23.3%) and black (21.7%). La nueva justicia digital debe ser desarrollada sin merma alguna de garantías procesales y fundamentalmente, sin que suponga un retroceso en el avance de lograr un acceso a aquella de todas las personas en igualdad de condiciones, con la finalidad de lograr la cohesión social. En este sentido, las personas en situación de discapacidad se encuentran una posición, digamos paradójico, respecto a este nuevo escenario; por un lado, pueden aprovechar las ventajas que ofrece la digitalización para ellos; por otro, la brecha digital multiforme se puede ver ensanchada precisamente por razón de su situación. El presente trabajo pretende realizar un análisis DAFO y CAME de la posición de este colectivo frente a la transformación digital de la Administración de Justicia.

In the 21st Century, emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases is significant and has an increasing importance in global concern of public health. Based on the COVID-19 pandemic and recently reported epidemics, most human pathogens originate in zoonosis. Many of such pathogens are related to viruses that have RNA genomes, which can be presented structurally as a single-strand or double-strand. During the last two decades, a timeline of major RNA viruses emergencies can be exemplified, such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV) in 2003, influenza A virus (H1N1) pdm09 in 2009, Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in 2012, Ebola virus (EBOV) in 2013–2016, Zika virus (ZIKV) in 2015 and the SARS-CoV-2 pdm19 in 2019. Even so, prophylactic or therapeutic drugs are unavailable for many RNA viruses circulating. Nonetheless, the COVID-19 pandemic brought considerable scientific advances in accelerating progress regarding prophylaxis, antiviral and drug development, and novel treatments. Regarding RNA virus diseases for humans, arboviruses play an essential and neglected role, constantly reemerging and affecting almost half of the human population, for which no drug has been licensed. Here we review the consolidated RNA viruses’ emergence and re-emergence in the 21st Century through available data. Then, we explored valuable lessons gained during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and focused on potential epidemiologic updates, prophylaxis, available treatments, and viral drug inhibitors. Finally, we explore arbovirus’s significance and the ongoing development of effective vaccines, antiviral drugs, and novel therapeutic approaches as strategies to control these neglected tropical diseases (NTD).

La investigación preparatoria como actividad realizada por las partes a fin de recabar información relativa a los hechos que fundamenten su pretensión, además de localizar y asegurar las fuentes de prueba, se configura como un elemento estructural esencial del proceso civil. Los diferentes sistemas procesales existentes configuran la regulación de esta fase de forma totalmente diferente, de manera que, durante décadas, los sistemas del llamado common law y civil law se han dado la espalda en este concreto aspecto procesal. Sin embargo, en los últimos tiempos, se han abierto líneas convergentes de ambos sistemas que benefician la eficiencia procesal de esta fase preprocesal. El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo primordial analizar cuáles son esas convergencias en ambos sistemas, destacando las ventajas e inconvenientes de las mismas, en orden a mejorar la tutela judicial efectiva de los litigantes, sobre todo, en aquellos supuestos en los que existe una desigualdad intrínseca de los mismos y la asimetría informativa de los hechos y las fuentes de prueba para sostener sus respectivas pretensiones resulta absolutamente palmaria.

Abducens nerve palsy is a common ocular motor paralysis with a broad set of etiopathogenetic causes. Magnetic resonance imaging is a key diagnostic technique to investigate organic causes of sixth nerve palsy, as it allows a detailed representation of the course of the nerve, particularly in its intracisternal tract. Anatomical variants of the sixth cranial nerve comprise duplications and fenestrations in various traits. Anatomical variants of cerebellar arteries have also been described. We report the case of a patient with abducens nerve palsy presumably related to a neurovascular conflict due to a peculiar anatomical variant, which consists in a cerebellar artery passing through the intracisternal duplication of the abducens nerve.

The paper examines different real-monetary dynamics and policy responses during the COVID-19 pandemic (C19P) and the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) in the United States through the lens of the Sraffian Supermultiplier model and the endogenous money approach. On the one hand, the C19P triggered a relatively deeper contraction in GDP, but its recovery was relatively faster and more robust. The 'V' shaped recovery from the C19P significantly contrasted the 'L' shaped trajectory of the post-GFC period. On the other hand, the money supply (M2) grew relatively more, and the monetary base expanded relatively less during the C19P. To explain these different real-monetary dynamics, a theoretical framework is developed and analyzed empirically for the United States. The theoretical model and the empirical analysis suggest that money supply is endogenously determined by creditworthy demand derived from the multiplier-accelerator effect of non-capacity generating autonomous demand, in which government spending plays a key role. Therefore, the absence of full hysteresis after the C19P shock had nothing to do with a traditional neoclassical trend reversal mechanism but with the fiscal supermultiplier effect of the extraordinary pandemic-related government spending. The identification of vitamin B12 (B12) deficiency in the newborn may prevent neurological damage and a delay in the normal growth. In this study we characterized the incidence of B12 deficiency in newborns, the costs associated to the clinical diagnosis and management, and the relevance to optimize the use of cobalamin biomarkers during treatment follow-up.Starting from a continuous case series of 146,470 screened newborns (November, 1st 2021- December, 3rd 2023), the Regional Reference Laboratory for Neonatal Screening identified 87 newborns having altered levels of biomarkers of cobalamin metabolism measured by Newborn Screening. These subjects were confirmed with a nutritional B12 deficiency of maternal origin by performing the serum B12 measurements and plasma homocysteine (Hcy) both on the newborns and respective mothers. A cost analysis was performed to characterize the costs/year of identifying and managing B12 deficiency cases.At baseline, median (interquartile range) serum B12 levels of 185.0 (142.3–246.0) ng/L and threefold increased plasma Hcy concentrations above the normal level confirmed a severe condition of deficiency in the newborns. After intramuscular B12 supplementation, serum B12 measured at the first follow up visit showed a fivefold increase, and the levels of Hcy returned to normal. From the healthcare perspective, the costs for diagnosing and managing all newborns with B12 deficiency is 188,480 €/year.Preventing B12 depletion in newborns lowers healthcare costs and likely improves their health outcomes. Further studies are however required to address the clinical pathway to identify, treat and monitor pregnant women with marginal and low B12 status, in order to achieve these goals. Understanding the biology and ecology of parasitoids can have direct implications for their evaluation as biological control agents, as well as for the development and implementation of mass-rearing techniques. Nonetheless, our current knowledge of the possible influence of lateralized displays (i.e. the asymmetric expression of cognitive functions) on their reproductive behavior is scarce. Herein, we characterized the behavioral elements involved in courtship, and quantified the durations of 2 important aphid parasitoids, Aphidius ervi Haliday and Aphidius matricariae Haliday (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Aphidiinae). We quantified the main indicators of copulation and examined the occurrence of lateralized traits at population level. Results indicated that A. matricariae exhibited longer durations of wing fanning, antennal tapping, pre-copula and copula phases compared to A. ervi. Postcopulatory behavior was observed only in A. matricariae. Unlike other parasitoid species, the duration of wing fanning, chasing, and antennal tapping did not affect the success of the mating of male A. ervi and A. matricariae. Both species exhibited a right-biased female kicking behavior at the population level during the pre-copula. Our study provides insights into the fundamental biology of aphidiine parasitoids and reports the presence of population-level lateralized mating displays, which can serve as useful benchmarks to evaluate the quality of mass-rearing systems. Surface roughness is a critical factor in restorative dentistry, as it influences both the esthetic and functional outcomes of dental materials. The choice of abrasive powders used during the air polishing of dental restorations can significantly impact the surface roughness, potentially affecting the longevity and performance of the restoration. This study aimed to compare the effects of three different air-polishing powders—sodium bicarbonate, erythritol, and glycine—on the surface roughness of a 3M Filtek™ Supreme XTE (3M St. Paul, Minnesota 55144-1000) United States composite resin and a Fuji™ IX glass ionomer cement. This study also examined how different application times (5 and 10 s) influenced these outcomes. Materials and Methods: An in vitro study was conducted using standardized blocks of 3M Filtek™ Supreme XTE composite resin and Fuji™ IX glass ionomer cement. Each material was treated with sodium bicarbonate, erythritol, and glycine at two different exposure times (5 s and 10 s) using a professional air-polishing device. Surface roughness (Ra) was measured before and after the treatments using a contact profilometer. The data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test to compare the mean roughness values among the different groups, with a significance level set at p < 0.05. Results: The results showed significant differences in surface roughness between the materials, powders, and application times. The composite resin exhibited lower roughness and variability compared with the Fuji™ IX, indicating a more uniform and predictable surface. Sodium bicarbonate produced the highest roughness values, particularly after 10 s of application, while glycine resulted in the lowest roughness with greater variability. Erythritol produced intermediate roughness with moderate variability. For the Fuji™ IX, sodium bicarbonate caused the greatest variability in roughness, while glycine produced the smoothest surfaces. The ANOVA results confirmed significant differences in mean roughness among the abrasive groups, with Tukey's post hoc test showing that glycine had significantly lower roughness than sodium bicarbonate, and erythritol had higher roughness than glycine but was lower than sodium bicarbonate. Conclusions: This study demonstrated that the choice of air-polishing powder and application time significantly affected the surface roughness of both 3M Filtek™ Supreme XTE composite resin and Fuji™ IX glass ionomer cement. Glycine consistently produced the smoothest surfaces, making it a preferable option for clinical scenarios where minimal surface roughness is desired. Sodium bicarbonate, while effective in cleaning, resulted in rougher surfaces, particularly after longer exposure times. Aim: The study aimed to compare the depth of cure, hardness, surface roughness, and wear resistance of four restorative materials used in pediatric dentistry: FUJI IX GP FAST, RivaSilver, SDR flow+, and Vertise Flow. Materials and Methods: The depth of cure was measured per ISO 4049 standards using a digital caliper, with 15 samples of each material. Hardness was evaluated using a Vickers indenter under a 10 N load for 20 s. Surface roughness was assessed before and after acid exposure using an optical profilometer according to ISO 4288. Brushing wear resistance was analyzed by subjecting samples to 20 and 60 min of brushing, followed by roughness measurements. Statistical analysis was performed using independent sample t-tests to determine the significance of differences between the materials, with p-values < 0.05 considered significant. Results: SDR flow+ exhibited the highest depth of cure with an average of 3.5 mm (±0.2 mm), significantly higher than Vertise Flow at 2.8 mm (±0.3 mm) (p < 0.001). Hardness testing revealed SDR flow+ had the highest average hardness (85 HV ± 4 HV), while Vertise Flow had the lowest (72 HV ± 5 HV) (p < 0.001). Surface roughness increased significantly after acid exposure for RivaSilver (from 1.2 μm ± 0.12 μm to 1.6 μm ± 0.15 μm, p = 0.007) and for SDR flow+ (from 0.85 μm ± 0.08 μm to 1.3 μm ± 0.14 μm, p = 0.001). Brushing wear resistance was highest in RivaSilver (Ra increase from 1.2 μm to 1.4 μm ± 0.11 μm) and lowest in FUJI IX GP FAST (Ra increase from 1.5 μm to 1.9 μm ± 0.15 μm, p < 0.001). Conclusions: The study demonstrates significant differences in performance among the tested materials. SDR flow+ showed a superior depth of cure and hardness, making it suitable for high-stress applications. However, all materials displayed increased surface roughness following acid exposure and brushing, with FUJI IX GP FAST showing the highest wear. These findings highlight the need to select restorative materials based on the specific clinical demands of pediatric patients, considering both their mechanical properties and resistance to wear and acid. Background: The prevalence of dental caries presents a global public challenge, particularly in children. Traditional caries risk assessment tools like Cariogram are effective but often complex and resource intensive. The aim of the present study was to introduce, for the first time, a newly designed caries risk assessment (CRA) tool named Index of Caries Risk (ICR) and to evaluate its efficacy for pediatric patients. Methods: This observational study was conducted at the University Hospital of Siena (Italy), involving 55 children aged 6 to 12 years. Participants were assessed using both the newly developed ICR and the well-known Cariogram tool. The data were collected by two calibrated operators. The ICR was compared with the Cariogram tool, and a descriptive analysis and a Pearson correlation coefficient were performed. Results: Results indicated a strong positive correlation (R = 0.88, p < 0.01) between the two methods, with ICR simplifying the assessment process while maintaining efficacy. Conclusions: This study highlights the ICR's potential to provide a practical, cost-effective alternative for routine caries risk assessment in pediatric dentistry. Despite its limitations, this research marks a preliminary investigation of a promising new CRA tool. Further research should focus on validating the ICR in the larger and more diverse pediatric population, as well as exploring its long-term effectiveness and its application in different clinical settings. OBJECTIVES CALGB140503/JCOG0802 RCTs comparing lobectomy with sublobar resection in stage IA NSCLC have confirmed the non-inferiority of segmentectomy. Additional insight is needed to improve preoperative work-up and intraoperative strategies to increase safety and promote the dissemination of minimally invasive segmentectomy (MIS). A Delphi panel study assessed the level of consensus among surgeons for the planning and management of MIS. METHODS Twenty-one expert lung surgeons represented academic institutions, major teaching hospitals, and community hospitals from Europe, North America, and Asia. A 3-round Delphi methodology was used to analyse the answers of each panellist. Recognizing that questions with fewer response options have a higher consensus probability due to limited variability, weighted consensus thresholds were modified based on the number of response options. RESULTS The 21 panellists responded to all 3 rounds of questions. Based on the most robust consensus (94.4%), 3D chest CT reconstructions are recommended only when planning complex segmentectomies. Surgeons should perform 3D reconstructions chest CT scans (consensus = 83.3%). The most effective and safest technique is image-guided VATS in a hybrid operating room (consensus = 83.3%). Dyes with intravenous administration are the safest technique for identifying the intersegmental plane during MIS (consensus = 72.2%). Augmented/mixed reality will probably not immediately help reduce perioperative complications (consensus = 72.2%). CONCLUSIONS This Delphi consensus supports 3D reconstructions and preoperative pulmonary nodule localization before complex MIS. These recommendations should be considered when allocating resources to improve MIS's safety and oncologic efficacy for patients with small, early-stage lung cancers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
