We present ASSET, a neural architecture for automatically modifying an input high-resolution image according to a user's edits on its semantic segmentation map. Our architecture is based on a transformer with a novel attention mechanism. Our key idea is to sparsify the transformer's attention matrix at high resolutions, guided by dense attention extracted at lower image resolutions. While previous attention mechanisms are computationally too expensive for handling high-resolution images or are overly constrained within specific image regions hampering long-range interactions, our novel attention mechanism is both computationally efficient and effective. Our sparsified attention mechanism is able to capture long-range interactions and context, leading to synthesizing interesting phenomena in scenes, such as reflections of landscapes onto water or flora consistent with the rest of the landscape, that were not possible to generate reliably with previous convnets and transformer approaches. We study symmetric diffusion operators on metric measure spaces. Our main question is whether or not the restriction of the operator to a suitable core continues to be essentially self-adjoint or $L^p$-unique if a small closed set is removed from the space. The effect depends on how large the removed set is, and we provide characterizations of the critical size in terms of capacities and Hausdorff dimension. As a key tool we prove a truncation result for potentials of nonnegative functions. We apply our results to Laplace operators on Riemannian and sub-Riemannian manifolds and on metric measure spaces satisfying curvature dimension conditions. For non-collapsing Ricci limit spaces with two-sided Ricci curvature bounds we observe that the self-adjoint Laplacian is already fully determined by the classical Laplacian on the regular part.

Understanding the physical processes sculpting the appearance of young gas-giant planets is complicated by degeneracies confounding effective temperature, surface gravity, cloudiness, and chemistry. To enable more detailed studies, spectroscopic observations covering a wide range of wavelengths is required. Here we present the first L-band spectroscopic observations of HR 8799 d and e and the first low-resolution wide bandwidth L-band spectroscopic measurements of HR 8799 c. These measurements were facilitated by an upgraded LMIRCam/ALES instrument at the LBT, together with a new apodizing phase plate coronagraph. Our data are generally consistent with previous photometric observations covering similar wavelengths, yet there exists some tension with narrowband photometry for HR 8799 c. With the addition of our spectra, each of the three innermost observed planets in the HR 8799 system have had their spectral energy distributions measured with integral field spectroscopy covering $\sim0.9$ to $4.1~\mu\mathrm{m}$. We combine these spectra with measurements from the literature and fit synthetic model atmospheres. We demonstrate that the bolometric luminosity of the planets is not sensitive to the choice of model atmosphere used to interpolate between measurements and extrapolate beyond them. Combining luminosity with age and mass constraints, we show that the predictions of evolutionary models are narrowly peaked for effective temperature, surface gravity, and planetary radius. By holding these parameters at their predicted values, we show that more flexible cloud models can provide good fits to the data while being consistent with the expectations of evolutionary models., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal; added reference, updated figure 6 and table 4

The Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment is designed to measure a high-precision integral spectrum of the endpoint region of T2 beta decay, with the primary goal of probing the absolute mass scale of the neutrino. After a first tritium commissioning campaign in 2018, the experiment has been regularly running since 2019, and in its first two measurement campaigns has already achieved a sub-eV sensitivity. After 1000 days of data-taking, KATRIN's design sensitivity is 0.2 eV at the 90% confidence level. In this white paper we describe the current status of KATRIN; explore prospects for measuring the neutrino mass and other physics observables, including sterile neutrinos and other beyond-Standard-Model hypotheses; and discuss research-and-development projects that may further improve the KATRIN sensitivity., Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021. 70 pages excluding references; 35 figures. We report on the direct cosmic relic neutrino background search from the first two science runs of the KATRIN experiment in 2019. Beta-decay electrons from a high-purity molecular tritium gas source are analyzed by a high-resolution MAC-E filter around the kinematic endpoint at 18.57 keV. The analysis is sensitive to a local relic neutrino overdensity of 9.7e10 (1.1e11) at a 90% (95%) confidence level. A fit of the integrated electron spectrum over a narrow interval around the kinematic endpoint accounting for relic neutrino captures in the Tritium source reveals no significant overdensity. This work improves the results obtained by the previous kinematic neutrino mass experiments at Los Alamos and Troitsk. We furthermore update the projected final sensitivity of the KATRIN experiment to <1e10 at 90% confidence level, by relying on updated operational conditions., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

We present the results of the light sterile neutrino search from the second KATRIN measurement campaign in 2019. Approaching nominal activity, $3.76 \times 10^6$ tritium $\beta$-electrons are analyzed in an energy window extending down to $40\,$eV below the tritium endpoint at $E_0 = 18.57\,$keV. We consider the $3\nu+1$ framework with three active and one sterile neutrino flavor. The analysis is sensitive to a fourth mass eigenstate $m_4^2\lesssim1600\,$eV$^2$ and active-to-sterile mixing $|U_{e4}|^2 \gtrsim 6 \times 10^{-3}$. As no sterile-neutrino signal was observed, we provide improved exclusion contours on $m_4^2$ and $|U_{e4}|^2$ at $95\,$% C.L. Our results supersede the limits from the Mainz and Troitsk experiments. Furthermore, we are able to exclude the large $\Delta m_{41}^2$ solutions of the reactor antineutrino and gallium anomalies to a great extent. The latter has recently been reaffirmed by the BEST collaboration and could be explained by a sterile neutrino with large mixing. While the remaining solutions at small $\Delta m_{41}^2$ are mostly excluded by short-baseline reactor experiments, KATRIN is the only ongoing laboratory experiment to be sensitive to relevant solutions at large $\Delta m_{41}^2$ through a robust spectral shape analysis., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables

The KATRIN experiment aims at measuring the electron neutrino mass with a sensitivity of 0.2 eV$/c^2$ after five years of data taking. Recently a new upper limit for the neutrino mass of 0.8 eV$/c^2$ (90% CL) was obtained. To reach the design sensitivity, a reduction of the background rate by one order of magnitude is required. The shifted analysing plane (SAP) configuration exploits a specific shaping of the electric and magnetic fields in the KATRIN main spectrometer to reduce the spectrometer background by a factor of two. Multi-wavelengths high-resolution imaging of protoplanetary disks has revealed the presence of multiple, varied substructures in their dust and gas components which might be signposts of young, forming planetary systems. AB Aurigae bears an emblematic (pre)transitional disk showing spiral structures observed in the inner cavity of the disk in both the sub-millimeter (ALMA; 1.3mm, $^{12}$CO) and near-infrared (SPHERE; 1.5-2.5$\mu$m) wavelengths which have been claimed to arise from dynamical interactions with a massive companion. In this work, we present new deep $K_s$ (2.16$\mu$m) and L' (3.7$\mu$m) band images of AB Aurigae obtained with LMIRCam on the Large Binocular Telescope, aimed for the detection of both planetary companions and extended disk structures. No point source is recovered, in particular at the outer regions of the disk, where a putative candidate ($\rho = 0.681", PA = 7.6^{\circ}$) had been previously claimed. The nature of a second innermost planet candidate ($\rho = 0.16'', PA = 203.9^{\circ}$) can not be investigated by the new data. We are able to derive 5$\sigma$ detection limits in both magnitude and mass for the system, going from 14 \Mjup at 0.3'' (49 au) down to 3-4 \Mjup at 0.6'' (98 au) and beyond, based on the ATMO 2020 evolutionary models. We detect the inner spiral structures (< 0.5'') resolved in both CO and polarimetric H-band observations. We also recover the ring structure of the system at larger separation (0.5-0.7") showing a clear south-east/north-west asymmetry. This structure, observed for the first time at L'-band, remains interior to the dust cavity seen at ALMA, suggesting an efficient dust trapping mechanism at play in the disk., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, accepted on ApJ

We present near-infrared Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer LMIRCam imagery of the disk around the Herbig Ae/Be star AB Aurigae. A comparison of surface brightness at Ks (2.16 ${\mu}$m), H2O narrowband (3.08 ${\mu}$m), and L' (3.7 ${\mu}$m) allows us to probe the presence of icy grains in this (pre)transitional disk environment. By applying Reference Differential Imaging PSF subtraction, we detect the disk at high signal to noise in all three bands. We find strong morphological differences between bands, including asymmetries consistent with observed spiral arms within 100 AU in L'. An apparent deficit of scattered light at 3.08 ${\mu}$m relative to bracketing wavelengths (Ks and L') is evocative of ice absorption at the disk surface layer. However, the ${\Delta}$(Ks-H2O) color is consistent with grains with little to no ice (0-5% by mass). The ${\Delta}$(H2O-L') color, conversely, suggests grains with a much higher ice mass fraction (~0.68), and the two colors cannot be reconciled under a single grain population model. Additionally, we find the extremely red ${\Delta}$(Ks-L') disk color cannot be reproduced under conventional scattered light modeling with any combination of grain parameters or reasonable local extinction values. We hypothesize that the scattering surfaces at the three wavelengths are not co-located, and optical depth effects result in each wavelength probing the grain population at different disk surface depths. The morphological similarity between Ks and H2O suggests their scattering surfaces are near one another, lending credence to the ${\Delta}$(Ks-H2O) disk color constraint of < 5% ice mass fraction for the outermost scattering disk layer., Comment: Accepted for publication in AJ

The Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) has two 8.4-m primary mirrors that produce beams that can be combined coherently in a "Fizeau" interferometric mode. In principle, the Fizeau PSF enables the probing of structure at a resolution up to three times better than that of the adaptive-optics-corrected PSF of a single 8.4-m telescope. In this work, we examined the nearby star Altair (5.13 pc, type A7V, $\sim$100s Myr to $\approx$1.4 Gyr) in the Fizeau mode with the LBT at Br-$\alpha$ (4.05 $\mu$m) and carried out angular differential imaging to search for companions. This work presents the first filled-aperture LBT Fizeau science dataset to benefit from a correcting mirror which provides active phase control. In the analysis of the $\lambda/D$ angular regime, the sensitivity of the dataset is down to $\approx$0.5 $M_{\odot}$ at 1" for a 1.0 Gyr system. This sensitivity remains limited by the small amount of integration time, which is in turn limited by the instability of the Fizeau PSF. However, in the Fizeau fringe regime we attain sensitivities of $\Delta m \approx 5$ at 0.2" and put constraints to companions of 1.3 $M_{\odot}$ down to an inner angle of $\approx$0.15", closer than any previously published direct imaging of Altair. This analysis is a pathfinder for future datasets of this type, and represents some of the first steps to unlocking the potential of the first ELT. Teachers are the key to success in any education system. In refugee settings, the role of teachers is particularly significant, as they can provide crucial continuity and socio-emotional support. They are sometimes the only educational resource available to students. Yet little is known about who are the teachers working in refugee-hosting communities. How are they recruited, trained and supported? IIEP-UNESCO and Education Development Trust are working together to provide research-informed policy recommendations for better management of teachers working with refugee children. This case study aims to contribute to the burgeoning evidence base on teachers working in crisis and displacement contexts and to provide the Government of Uganda, UNHCR and other key partners with research-informed policy guidance to inform the ongoing effective management of teachers to ensure quality education for all learners. Using a collaborative, multi-phased, mixed-methods approach, the research examines how teachers are managed in policy and practice in refugee settings in Uganda. The case study identifies promising policies and practices, as well as gaps in policy and practice, to reveal potential areas for further development and successful implementation of policies to support effective teacher management in refugee settings.

Globally, there are 70.8 million forcibly displaced persons. Among these are 25.9 million refugees, over half of whom are children. Effective teacher management is key to ensuring inclusive, equitable, quality education for these young people, and teachers constitute the most important factor affecting student learning. In crisis and displacement situations, the role of teachers is particularly significant: they are sometimes the only resource available to students. This report investigates teacher management in refugee contexts in Ethiopia, and is the first in a series of country reports. It contributes to a burgeoning body of evidence about teachers in refugee contexts and aims to provide policy guidance to support ministries of education.
