In 2020, the Super-Kamiokande (SK) experiment moved to a new stage (SK-Gd) in which gadolinium (Gd) sulfate octahydrate was added to the water in the detector, enhancing the efficiency to detect thermal neutrons and consequently improving the sensitivity to low energy electron anti-neutrinos from inverse beta decay (IBD) interactions. SK-Gd has the potential to provide early alerts of incipient core-collapse supernovae through detection of electron anti-neutrinos from thermal and nuclear processes responsible for the cooling of massive stars before the gravitational collapse of their cores. These pre-supernova neutrinos emitted during the silicon burning phase can exceed the energy threshold for IBD reactions. We present the sensitivity of SK-Gd to pre-supernova stars and the techniques used for the development of a pre-supernova alarm based on the detection of these neutrinos in SK, as well as prospects for future SK-Gd phases with higher concentrations of Gd. Fe$_5$GeTe$_2$ is a van der Waals (vdW)-coupled unconventional ferromagnetic metal with a high Curie temperature ($T_C$) exceeding 300 K. The formation of an anomalous ground state significantly below $T_C$ has received considerable attention, resulting in increased interest in understanding the spin-polarized electronic state evolution near the Fermi energy ($E_F$) as a function of temperature. Despite recent extensive studies, a microscopic understanding of the spin-polarized electronic structure around $E_F$ has not yet been established owing to the intrinsic complexity of both the crystal and band structures. In this study, we investigate the temperature dependence of element-specific soft X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). A systematic temperature evolution in the XMCD signal from both magnetic Fe and its ligand Te is clearly observed. More importantly, the enhancement in the hybridization between the Fe 3$d$ and Te 5$p$ states in the zero-magnetic field limit is revealed, and we discuss its implications on the possible emergence of an exotic magnetic ground state in Fe$_5$GeTe$_2$., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

We present a new formulation to construct numerically equilibrium configurations of rotating stars in general relativity. Having in mind the application to their quasi static evolutions, we adopt a Lagrangian formulation of our own devising, in which we solve force balance equations to seek for the positions of fluid elements assigned to the grid points, instead of the ordinary Eulerian formulation. Unlike previous works in the literature, we do not employ the first integral of the Euler equation, which is not obtained by an analytic integration in general. We assign a mass, specific angular momentum and entropy to each fluid element in contrast to the previous methods, in which the spatial distribution of the angular velocity or angular momentum is specified. Those distributions are determined after the positions of all fluid elements (or grid points) are derived in our formulation. We solve the large system of algebraic nonlinear equations that are obtained by discretizing the time-independent Euler and Einstein equations in the finite-elements method by using our new multi-dimensional root-finding scheme, named the W4 method. To demonstrate the capability of our new formulation, we construct some rotational configurations both barotropic and baroclinic. We proposed in this paper a new method, which we named the W4 method, to solve nonlinear equation systems. It may be regarded as an extension of the Newton-Raphson~(NR) method to be used when the method fails. Indeed our method can be applied not only to ordinary problems with non-singular Jacobian matrices but also to problems with singular Jacobians, which essentially all previous methods that employ the inversion of the Jacobian matrix have failed to solve. In this article, we demonstrate that (i) our new scheme can define a non-singular iteration map even for those problems by utilizing the singular value decomposition, (ii) a series of vectors in the new iteration map converges to the right solution under a certain condition, (iii) the standard two-dimensional problems in the literature that no single method proposed so far has been able to solve completely are all solved by our new method., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Magnetic semimetals have increasingly emerged as lucrative platforms hosting spin-based topological phenomena in real and momentum spaces. Of particular interest is the emergence of Berry curvature, whose geometric origin, accessibility from Hall transport experiments, and material tunability, bodes well for new physics and practical devices. Cr1+dTe2, a self-intercalated magnetic transition metal dichalcogenide, TMD, exhibits attractive natural attributes relevant to such applications, including topological magnetism, tunable electron filling, magnetic frustration etc. While recent studies have explored real-space Berry curvature effects in this material, similar considerations of momentum-space Berry curvature are lacking. Here, we systematically investigate the electronic structure and transport properties of epitaxial Cr1+dTe2 thin films over a wide range of doping, d between 0.33 and 0.71. Spectroscopic experiments reveal the presence of a characteristic semi-metallic band region near the Brillouin Zone edge, which shows a rigid band like energy shift as a function of d. Transport experiments show that the intrinsic component of the anomalous Hall effect, AHE, is sizable, and undergoes a sign flip across d. Finally, density functional theory calculations establish a causal link between the observed doping evolution of the band structure and AHE: the AHE sign flip is shown to emerge from the sign change of the Berry curvature, as the semi-metallic band region crosses the Fermi energy. Our findings underscore the increasing relevance of momentum-space Berry curvature in magnetic TMDs and provide a unique platform for intertwining topological physics in real and momentum spaces.

Recently, public displays such as liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are often used in urban green spaces, however, the display devices can spoil green landscape of urban green spaces because they look like artificial materials. We previously proposed a green landscape-friendly grass animation display method by controlling a pixel-by-pixel grass color dynamically. The grass color can be changed by moving a green grass length in yellow grass, and the grass animation display can play simple animations using grayscale images. In the previous research, the color scale was mapped to the green grass length subjectively, however, this method has not achieved displaying the grass colors corresponding to the color scale based on objective evaluations. Here, we introduce a dynamic grass color scale display technique based on a grass length. In this paper, we developed a grass color scale setting procedure to map the grass length to the color scale with five levels through image processing. Through the outdoor experiment of the grass color scale setting procedure, the color scale can correspond to the green grass length based on a viewpoint. After the experiments, we demonstrated a grass animation display to show the animations with the color scale using the experiment results., Comment: 17 pages

We investigate the magneto--elastic equilibrium of a neutron star crust and magnetic energy stored by the elastic force. The solenoidal motion driven by the Lorentz force can be controlled by the magnetic elastic force, so that conditions for the magnetic field strength and geometry are less restrictive. For equilibrium models, the minor solenoidal part of the magnetic force is balanced by a weak elastic force because the irrotational part is balanced by the dominant gravity and pressure forces. Therefore, a strong magnetic field may be confined in the interior, regardless of poloidal or toroidal components. We numerically calculated axially symmetric models with the maximum shear--strain, and found that a magnetic energy $> 10^{46}$ erg can be stored in the crust, even for a normal surface dipole-field-strength ($<10^{13}$ G). The magnetic energy much exceeds the elastic energy ($ 10^{44} -10^{45}$ erg). The shear--stress spatial distribution revealed that the elastic structure is likely to break down near the surface. In the daily operation of liquefied petroleum gas service, gas providers visit customers and replace cylinders if the gas is about to run out. For a long time, frequent visits to customers were required because they could not determine the amount of remaining gas without a staff visit and observation. To solve this problem, smart meters are started to be employed to acquire gas consumption more frequently without visiting customers. In this study, we construct a system to optimize plans for cylinder replacement, and evaluate it with a large-scale field test. We propose an algorithm to create a replacement plan with three steps: estimating the replacement date, acquiring the customer list for replacement, and determining the delivery route. A more accurate estimation of the replacement date can be acquired with a smart meter, which is used for making a customer list for replacement. The formulation for making a customer list enables the gas provider to replace cylinders some days before the date when the gas would run out. It can suppress the concentration of replacements on certain days. Large-scale verification experiments were performed with more than 1,000 customers in Chiba prefecture in Japan. In the field test, the gas provider incorporated the system into its replacement operations. Moreover, the replacement plans developed by the proposed system were compared with that by the gas provider. Our system reduced the number of gas cylinders with gas shortage, the number of visits without replacement due to plenty of gas remaining, and the working duration per customer, which shows that our system benefits both gas providers and customers., Comment: 25 pages

The Picard-Lefschetz theory has been attracting much attention as a tool to evaluate a multi-variable integral with a complex weight, which appears in various important problems in theoretical physics. The idea is to deform the integration contour based on Cauchy's theorem using the so-called gradient flow equation. In this paper, we propose a fast Hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm for evaluating the integral, where we "backpropagate" the force of the fictitious Hamilton dynamics on the deformed contour to that on the original contour, thereby reducing the required computational cost by a factor of the system size. Our algorithm can be readily extended to the case in which one integrates over the flow time in order to solve not only the sign problem but also the ergodicity problem that occurs when there are more than one thimbles contributing to the integral. This enables, in particular, efficient identification of all the dominant saddle points and the associated thimbles. We report time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on SnSe which currently attracts great interest due to its extremely high thermoelectric performance. Laser-assisted photoemission signals are observed within $\pm$20 fs of the pump pulse arrival. Around 30-50 fs after the photoexcitation, the conduction band minima are not populated by the photoexcited electrons while the valence bands are considerably broadened. In going from 90 fs to 550 fs after the photoexcitation, the photoexcited carriers are decayed into the multiple conduction band minima. The observed conduction bands are consistent with the band structure calculations. The multiple conduction minima suggest possibility of high and anisotropic thermoelectric performance of n-type SnSe single crystal if it is realized., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures
